We've already heard a smattering of music from Tasha's new album You Are Spring! But her new song out this week has me locked in with a new attentiveness. "Quick!" is a staggering achievement. The song spends three and a half minutes building up intensity in raw, pounding rock mode, then bottoms out into a lovely acoustic comedown that continues to feel like some kind of rugged ceremony. Tasha's voice is stirring throughout. "I'm a mockingbird repeating all I've heard," she concludes. "I'm a falling star landing where you are." When the final guitar strum hits, you feel like you've been through something.

A few weeks Clairo gave a vague yet inspiring update on her upcoming fourth studio album, the follow-up to 2024's Charm and her first for new label home Atlantic Records. We know that the new album sounds very different than its predecessors, and that she's a bit scared (in a good way) about it. Yesterday, SZA (who joined Don Toliver onstage at MSG on Monday) posted a video of Clairo in the studio on her Instagram story. Knowing that the Clairo album is imminent and that she's been in such beautiful creative company, is this an A+B=C scenario? Are we getting a freaking Clairo/SZA collab?

Next week, the New York underground rap fixture Wiki will release his new album Ancient History. I have heard it, and it's great. For now, you'll mostly have to take my word for it, since Wiki's not exactly inundating us with advance singles. Up until today, the only one he shared was "Park," his warm and hazy meditation on New York's green spaces. Most of Ancient History has that kind of dazed, humid production, but that's not what Wiki uses on "Right Away," the new single that he shared today.

It doesn't negate the message or the feeling of her music, but I like the contrast — singing about hopelessness while operating in a way that inspires hope.

Sage Elsesser is a skateboarder, artist, and model, but this is a music blog, so around here he's known for rapping. As Navy Blue, Elsesser has carved out a space within the heady, abstract underground hip-hop landscape. In March he guested on a track with Cavalier, Quelle Chris, and Denmark Vessey, and he's since followed that with "Ocean Light (Phase 1: Prelude)," which seemed to be a warning shot for a project to come. Indeed, there's a new Navy Blue record called Sir Render dropping this Friday, and its guest list is formidable.

Some of us were invested in the name "Kenny Beats." That name rang bells. Kenny Beats has done a whole lot of great rap production; "Kenneth Blume" has not. It feels especially ridiculous to write about a new Rico Nasty single produced by "Kenneth Blume."

It would be bad enough if a different band called Hammock didn't just release an album of their own, but this current situation just isn't sustainable. We simply cannot have indie bands called Hammok and Hammock operating at the same time. It's not fair to music bloggers. We are human beings, which means that we are easily confused. You can't expect remember the difference between Hammok and Hammock. It's like the world is laying traps for us, just so the comments section can dunk on us whenever we fuck something up.

Johnny Whitney, one of the two Blood Brothers frontmen, now also leads Evil Island, which also includes guitarist Cody Votolato and drummer Mark Gajadhar, as well as former OFF/...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead bassist Autry Fulbright.

Peabo Bryson Dead At 75

Peabo Bryson, a singer known for his tender and textured take on smooth grown-folks R&B, has passed away. Bryson, known as the "Voice Of Love," died at a Marietta, Georgia hospital on Tuesday after suffering a stroke earlier this year. He was 75.

Earlier this year, Stipe returned for his second Simpsons guest voice role and sang R.E.M. songs with Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy's all-star tribute band. In April, Stipe debuted a new song on a late-period Colbert episode. On Tuesday night, Stipe was back on late-night TV, singing his Rooster theme song on Kimmel.

In February 2025, Ben Folds resigned his position as Artistic Advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra in response to Donald Trump taking over the Kennedy Center. It only got worse from there; by the end of the year, it was announced that the historic performing arts establishment was being renamed the Trump-Kennedy Center. Backlash ensued, and just last week a federal judge ordered Trump's name off the building. Today, Ben Folds shared an open letter regarding the fate of the National Symphony Orchestra.

Officially, pgLang is more than a record label — it's also a film production company, an ad agency, and maybe more — but it certainly has released records. Thus far, other than jointly releasing Tanna Leone's Sleepy Soldier with Def Jam in 2022, the company has mainly served as a repository for the music of Kendrick and his cousin, Baby Keem. But today, out of nowhere today, pgLang announced their latest artist signing and dropped that artist's debut album.

C+C Music Factory Co-Founder Threatens To Sue Frontman For Using Group Name

C+C Music Factory, the '90s music group responsible for classic hip-house tracks like "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)" and "Things That Make You Go Hmmm…," have been back in the news lately for disreputable reasons. Last week, C+C were announced as part of the extremely '90s-heavy initial lineup for Donald Trump's Freedom 250 concert series, the Great American State Fair. While other acts dropped out, rapper Freedom Williams, who guested on some of C+C's biggest hits, defended his involvement in a saucy seven-minute rant filmed while he was on the toilet, essentially arguing that he needs the money and a gig's a gig. Williams acquired the legal rights to the C+C Music Factory trademark for live performances in 2003, and he controls the longstanding C+C Instagram account.

A little while back, Public Opinion, the Denver band whose members come from the hardcore underground but whose sound is more of a rippin' garage-punk situation, announced their upcoming album The Curse Of Public Opinion. They also shared the video for lead single "Balloon Man Running," in which frontman Kevin Hart (not that one) keeps getting punched in the face by strangers. It was a real "roast of Kevin Hart" situation.
