Heather Sawyer has been in Madison punk bands like the Hussy, Proud Parents, and Boo/Hiss, and she makes her own spiky, gnarly, catchy DIY tracks as Heather The Jerk. Just a few months ago, she impressed us mightily with the cassette album Scroll If You Love Devil, which our own Chris DeVille described as "a bit like Vivian Girls meets Illuminati Hotties meets Sheer Mag." Now, she's got an absolutely sick new one-off single, a joyous 74-second sugar-rush basher called "Write A Letter." It's the best piece of Ramones-core I've heard since the last Dark Thought record; those little xylophone dings just kill me. Hear it for yourself below.

The White Stripes blew up fast. I was a high school senior in 2002, when V2 Records brought the prior year’s White Blood Cells to the MTV2 viewers of America. I remember immersing myself in the album on a portable CD player in the backseat of my parents’ sedan on my way from Columbus to Lansing for a college visit at Michigan State, marveling at the power and versatility of this quirky garage band from nearby Detroit with the fuzzy backstory and the striking color scheme. They seemed incredibly cool, but also raw and lo-fi in a way that prevented me from imagining how quickly they would rocket past rock-critic-famous. In a matter of months, the Stripes were accepting awards at the VMAs, performing on SNL, and selling more than half a million copies of their album. But what really blew my mind was when they opened some arena shows for the Rolling Stones.

Lankum’s Radie Peat Shares Debut Solo Single “Still I Love Him”

Human hook-factory Kai Slater is a member of the and Lifeguard and a key piece of Chicago's Hallogallo scene, the circle of super-young bands documented on the recent Red Xerox compilation. Today, he's got another super-impressive new gem of a song.

Just last month, Fucked Up released Year Of The Monkey, the second installlment in the hugely ambitious new 12" single series Grass Can Move Stones, which will apparently finish out their long-running Chinese Zodiac project after 20 years. That's not enough to keep them busy, though. Today, a couple of Fucked Up members launch a new side project that recalls the band's early hardcore punk days.

The Mountain Goats – “Candlebox”

If you're the right age, the world "Candlebox" brings up all kinds of indelible memories. If you're too young, just know that Candlebox were a Seattle rock band who happened to catch on during the grunge explosion, even though they weren't really a grunge band. They were one of the first acts who signed to Madonna's Maverick label, and their self-titled 1993 debut spawned a ton of radio hits and went quadruple platinum. But they got a lot of backlash for riding the grunge wave, even though they never really tried to do that, and their subsequent records didn't sell. Candlebox ultimately broke up and got back together, and they're still a band today, but their name will always evoke a certain moment of rock 'n' roll excitement, confusion, and resentment. Now, Candlebox have a brand new Mountain Goats song named after them.

Around the time that he formed the White Stripes, Jack White had a stint as a guitarist for the Go, a wooly and psychedelic Detroit garage-punk band. White was in the Go when they recorded their debut album Whatcha Doin', which came out on Sub Pop in 1999. Shortly thereafter, White left the Go, and they recorded another album called Free Electricity. It never came out. But after 26 years on the shelf, Free Electricity will finally get a Sub Pop release later this year.

Jawdropped Announce New Album Secret To Spare: Hear “Split Lip”

I'm not sure any song this year has burrowed its way into my brain more effectively than "Monday," the springtime offering from LA power-pop band Jawdropped. That song is catchy as hell, it moves with an irresistible momentum, and I love the noisy tension threaded into it, which neatly dovetails with the lyrics about delighted, anxious anticipation. It's further elevated by the music video, a simple but effective clip that finds the four members of Jawdropped performing in front of windows in different rooms of a building. You know how you can be vaguely aware of a band and then one song comes along and snaps you into focus, and then you're an enthusiastic fan? "Monday" was that song for me.

Title Fight Reunite (For Acoustic Wedding Performance)

The Title Fight reunion already happened, and you missed it. Title Fight, the Pennsylvania post-hardcore greats, played their last show in 2018. They never announced a breakup or a hiatus, but they've also ignored the louder and louder calls to get back together and play some more shows. In the eight years since Title Fight went away, their legend has grown to absurd proportions. They do huge streaming numbers, and bands like Haywire get crazy reactions when they cover Title Fight. Just last week, the metalcore band Static Dress briefly faked out the crowd by teasing a Title Fight reunion at Manchester's Outbreak Fest. A few days later, the real Title Fight played a little quasi-reunion across the ocean, with nobody but friends and family in attendance.

Blimp – “Awayward”

Meet Blimp, a band that falls somewhere between grunge and emo. They've shared stages with bands like julie and Rocket, and their member Ren Takekawa also plays in yeule's band. The LA-based four-piece has been on the rise since their dark, enticing 2023 Egg EP. But more recently, they built excitement with May's "Saccharine," and they did it again on Monday (July 6) with "Awayward." The latter is a cathartic, emo-leaning journey that's riveting and enthralling for all of its six minutes. Hear it below alongside "Saccharine."

Snooper – “Recess”

Snooper have been making big moves. In April, vocalist Blair Tramel joined Hayley Williams onstage for a song. A couple weeks ago, the band was announced as openers for Mannequin Pussy and Wednesday's Bitch Cabal Tour, which rudely is not coming to New York. Now, they're back "Recess," their first new track since last year's Worldwide (aside from some demos and live recordings they've shared). "Recess" has Snooper trading their punk chaos for electronic rambunctiousness, and that's because it's directly inspired by "Lip Gloss" by Lil Mama, one of Tramel's favorite songs. It comes with a music video in an abandoned high school during the demolition process. Watch below.

Back in May, Gilla Band finally returned with the explosive, twisty single "Giraffe." That's the kind of song that you release when you're getting ready to announce an album, and that album has now been announced.

Charli XCX’s Lone Music, Fashion, Film Feature Is David Cronenberg

One of them was Cronenberg Summer, a fun thing to even think about. How would an entire summer dedicated to Canadian horror movie legend David Cronenberg look? Melted globs of flesh steaming on every sidewalk? Grotesque plastic surgery disasters partying in every club? Constant reminders of the fragility of human physiology? Wait! Is Cronenberg Summer happening right now? It might be, since Cronenberg is the only featured guest on the new Charli XCX album.

Philadelphia-based duo imy3 and Bay Area trio towhead are two bands who mess around with '90s slowcore sounds, combining them with the playful and experimental home-recorded electronic textures that have come to affect so much DIY music. They're both really new. imy3 released their first demo in 2024, and their album imy2 came out last year. Walker Price started towhead as a bedroom-folk project in Washington, DC in 2022, and it developed into a full band after he moved to the Bay.

Jeff Rosenstock Booked For 311 Cruise 12 Years After His Petition

Among the increasing number of bands who've headlined their own concert cruise, 311 are veterans. The genre-melding rockers have been working with maritime music festival promoter Sixthman since 2011, and today they announced the latest iteration of their 311 Caribbean Cruise. From March 10-15, 2027, the boat will travel to Ocho Rios, Jamaica, and Grand Cayman before returning back to its starting point of Miami. Besides Nick Hexum and crew, the lineup offers artists such as the Pharcyde, Little Stranger, Ballyhoo!, Bumpin Uglies, the Skints, and RDGLDGRN. Crucially, it also features Jeff Rosenstock.
