As heard on their new track out today, the Raleigh post-punk band RIBS are like a harder, meaner, spacier Hold Steady, mixing classic rock riffs with Mike Wallace's spoken and shouted narration. After a long and accomplished tenure as a live act, RIBS released their debut album Junk Dynasty Leaderboard last year. They're putting out their second, COLD RIBS, this summer via the great North Carolina indie institution Three Lobed, whose Cory Rayborn seemed to have a lot of fun describing the band in a note to Bandcamp followers today:

Way back in 2014, k.d. lang reached out to fellow singer-songwriters Neko Case and Laura Veirs to see if they wanted to make an album as a trio. Case and Veirs enthusiastically agreed, so they all started working together in Portland for a couple of years. The three of them became a group known as case/lang/veirs, and they toured together after releasing a self-titled album, which came out on this day in 2016. Today, case/lang/veirs celebrate that anniversary by announcing a deluxe edition and sharing a previously unreleased song.

Asteroid Named After Elliott Smith

An asteroid has been officially named after the late, great Elliott Smith. Orlando Campopiano, an independent filmmaker based in Edinburgh, got the idea while listening to "Shooting Star" off Smith's posthumous album From A Basement On The Hill. He worked with Smith's estate to submit a proposal to the International Astronomical Union, and the governing body opted to say yes. Now there's a big rock out there in the sky bearing Smith's name. Young hitmaker Lil Nas X has had a rough year. In August 2025, LAPD arrested the artist after the artist was seen dancing down Ventura Boulevard in nothing but underwear and cowboy boots. Police claimed that he charged at them and assaulting then, sending one cop to the hospital. Though he faced four felony charges, a judge granted Lil Nas X a mental health diversion back in spring, and he went free. Now, he's shared a video message to let fans know how he's doing.

Harry Styles just returned with his new album Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally, and he's the curator of this year's Meltdown Festival, the series of shows that comes to London's Southbank Centre every year. Meltdown began last week, and it runs through June 21. As curator, Styles chose a lineup people like James Murphy, Dev Hynes, Kamasi Washington, and Beverly Glenn-Copeland. Styles gave his own Meltdown performance at the Royal Festival Hall on Tuesday night, and it was different from his regular sets.

Mann reprised her appearance at three more Forum gigs over the past week. Presumably she won't be with Rush when they move on to Mexico City this week. She almost wasn't with them in LA.

Mystikal Sentenced To 20 Years In Prison In Rape Case

Onetime New Orleans rap star Mystikal has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to rape. In 2022, police in Louisiana arrested the 51-year-old Mystikal, whose real name is Michael Tyler, for first-degree rape, domestic abuse, battery by strangulation, false imprisonment, and property damage.

The Austin combo Guiding Light includes two members of local indiepop rising stars Touch Girl Apple Blossom, but this group jangles a bit differently. Guiding Light's lo-fi self-titled EP was full of twitchy, hyperactive post-punk — the sound of virtuosic Television guitar moving at contorted Minutemen rhythms, topped off by Elise Cook's blunt German bellows and English exclamations on sort of a Kleenex/Liliput wavelength. It was cool.

The Kidz Bop Kids have been through god knows how many iterations over the years. Zendaya was a Kidz Bop Kid once! So was Becky G! But even as the group itself has changed, their method has not. Sometimes, the Kidz Bop Kids' lyrically edits of those pop hits can be very funny, as when they took on Chappell Roan's "Good Luck, Babe!" two years ago. Sometimes, though, they can fundamentally change the meaning of a lyric, to the point where the guy who wrote the original song feels like he has to say something.

In the fall of 2020, riding high off the success of her pandemic-era classic Punisher, Phoebe Bridgers launched Saddest Factory Records, a new imprint operating under the umbrella of Dead Oceans, the indie mega-label that puts out Bridgers' own records. She's since applied the Saddest Factory branding to her SiriusXM show. In its half-decade of existence, Saddest Factory has released records by Muna, Claud, Sloppy Jane, and others, and it's built up an identity. It may well hold onto that identity, but it won't be keeping its name.

Converge are getting busy these days. The Boston metalcore institution has been going since 1990, and they have lost no steam, ever. Today, they announce the lineup for the second edition of Saddest Day, the hometown festival named after the seven-minute epic from their 1995 album Petitioning The Empty Sky.

The ongoing shoegaze revival shows no signs of slowing down, and now we've got a trip-hop revival to go right along with it. 16 Underground, a newish LA band who have to be named at least partially after the Sneaker Pimps' one hit, are part of that. 16 Underground's members mostly come from the punk and hardcore world, but that's not what they're doing with this band. Instead, they're making dizzy, sunny, brightly textured tracks with wispy vocals and breakbeat loops — tracks that sound both extremely '90s and extremely right-now.

Harmonies, baby! The playful, adventurous London trio Ebbb truly go wild with the harmonies on their new song "Side On." The track combines dazed, beatific Beach Boys-style choral ooohs with headlong jungle breakbeats, a cool juxtaposition that I don't think I've heard before. They're trying things, and those things are working.

In recent years, the art-soul explorer Dawn Richard has been venturing further and further into abstract directions, as on Quiet In A World Full Of Noise, her 2024 collaboration with Spencer Zahn. Now, she seems to be switching it up once again. Recently, Richard returned to the public eye when she sued her former boss and collaborator Sean Combs for sexual abuse and testified against him in his criminal trial. In December, she released the slinky, funky single "A Flex." Today, she drops another single that calls back to classic '90s R&B.

This year the fun, high-energy Stockholm rock band Clutter have doled out the singles "C.L.U.T.T.E.R." and "GirlVsHeart." Those will both appear on Sugar Rush, Clutter's debut album. The band announced their LP today and shared a video for "Grease Baby," its third single. It's a tightly wound, hard-hitting post-punk track with an irresistible momentum. No wheels are reinvented here, but baby, they're rolling fast.

Faith No More Tease 2027 Reunion

It has been more than a decade since the last time Mike Patton performed with his old band Faith No More. The wild, adventurous alt-metal legends broke up in 1998 and then got back together in 2009, playing huge shows and releasing the well-received 2015 reunion album Sol Invictus. As of right now, the band's most recent live show was a 2016 show at the Troubadour in LA. That was one of two reunion gigs with former frontman Chuck Mosely, who passed away one year later. The last time that they played with Mike Patton was 2015's Aftershock Festival. For a while, it seemed like that would be Patton's last time performing with the band.

Pulp Announce Live Album And Film

Pulp really pulled it off. Last year, the reunited Britpop legends released More, their first album in a quarter-century, and it absolutely ruled, fully earning its spot within the band's discography. It's not better than Different Class or anything, but it can hang with We Love Life just fine, and it easily outclasses anything that the band did before His 'N' Hers. After the LP's release, Pulp headed out on a victory-lap tour, released a handful of extra songs, and covered ABBA and Johnny Cash. Now, they're announcing a new concert film with the fitting title Pulp: What Do You Do For An Encore, as well as an accompanying live album.
