Village People’s Victor Willis Dead At 74

Victor Willis, the singer-songwriter who fronted the disco group Village People in costume as a policeman or naval officer, has died. "It is with profound sadness that I must announce the death of my husband, VICTOR WILLIS," reads a statement posted to Willis' Facebook page. "Victor passed away on Tuesday June 30, 2026 as a result of a short, but aggressive illness. The family request privacy at this time of great loss." Willis was 74.

Venues Should Stop Giving Stephen Malkmus Black Towels

The latest installment of the NPR quiz show Wait Wait…Don't Tell Me! was recorded in Chicago, and it features an appearance from Stephen Malkmus, who moved to the Windy City in recent years. According to NPR's episode description, the Pavement/Jicks/Hard Quartet frontman was there "to answer three questions about construction zones." Specifically, he played a game called "Pavement repairs are underway!" As someone who hears "5-4=Unity" in my head every time I see a highway sign that says GROOVED PAVEMENT, I appreciate the hyper-literal approach. However, the main takeaway from the episode has to do with towels, not asphalt.

Queens Of The Stone Age kicked off their European tour opening for System Of A Down Monday night at Stockholm-area Strawberry Arena. They got things started with a song they hadn't performed in 18 years. After a warped recording of "Afternoon Delight" welcomed Josh Homme and the boys onstage, they launched into Era Vulgaris highlight "Run, Pig, Run" for the first time since 2008. The show also included "The Fun Machine Took A Shit And Died," also from Era Vulgaris, for the first time since 2014. Watch QOTSA dig up both of those tracks below.

NYC-based experimental electronic artist Ela Minus and Miami-based DJ-producer Nick León share a Colombian heritage, and last year they teamed up on "Ghost Orchid," a single from León's debut album A Tropical Entropy. Now they've gone and made a whole EP together, much like Minus did with DJ Python back in 2022. “It was so free,” León says of his creative chemistry with Minus. “There were unspoken understandings of what we wanted to do. That’s not normal." Minus adds, “We immediately felt this kinship."

Although he endorsed Donald Trump for president in 2020, saying, "I don’t care Trump doesn’t like Black people," and has long fraternized with both sides of the political aisle, 50 Cent has previously refused opportunities to perform at MAGA events. In late 2024 he told The Breakfast Club that he turned down $3 million to play Trump’s pre-election rally at MSG that happened a few days earlier. He also said he turned down money to play the Republican National Convention that July. But he also congratulated Trump on Instagram after he won the election.

Converge got us good, didn’t they? On April 1, less than two months after the release of their long-awaited 10th studio album Love Is Not Enough, the Massachusetts metalcore heroes announced Hum Of Hurt, their second full-length of 2026. They got me good, anyway. I profiled Converge for the cover of Decibel back in February, and over the course of an hour-long interview with all four members of the band, no one let slip that there was another album coming on the heels of Love Is Not Enough. There were a few moments in that interview that I clocked as odd at the time, where one member would try to stop another from going down a particular conversational road, but I guess my journalistic instincts were rusty. I figured that was just how long-running bands handle their internal business, and I moved on. I got got!

Bruce K. Tull, the musician best known as lead guitarist and pedal steel player for the Northampton alt-country band Scud Mountain Boys, has died. Tull passed away June 22 at home in Tulsa after a brief illness, according to a statement shared with Stereogum. He was 71.

London four-piece Alphabet — vocalist/guitarist Milo McNulty, vocalist/bassist Lena Pilshofer, guitarist Tom Sullivan, and drummer George Miles — have been routinely dropping singles since the fall of 2024. Their music is a brooding concoction of '80s gothic rock and early 2000s alt-rock, like if the Cure, TV On The Radio, and the Bravery grabbed a late-night drink. Today, they've dropped a new single, "Sense," co-produced by the band and Luke Farnall (Loyle Carner, Ezra Collective, PinkPantheress).

There's been a new development with Bob Dylan's band. Over the past month, he's had an unexpected rotating roster of guitarists. On June 17, jazz virtuoso Julian Lage replaced guitarist Doug Lancio, who had been part of Dylan's band since replacing Charlie Sexton in 2021. On June 27, Bob Britt, who had been a guitarist with Dylan since 2019, not-so-subtly quit with a "Sayonara Bobby" post on Facebook. There's now word that there's a new guitarist in town for Bob's tour: Joel Paterson.

The Alabama native is following up last year's Tilt EP today with the news that he's signed to the esteemed Fire Talk Records. He's got a new single too, a drowsy indie-country lope called "Candy Corn" that finds him singing repeatedly about "the agony of aging." It's produced by the very busy Brad Cook. Thomas explains, "This is my broadest attempt to write about what youth felt like, looking back as an aging knucklehead."

The opening act is a string ensemble called the Dallas Minor Trio performing the singer's older hits with the lyrics projected behind them for the audience to sing along. Allen then takes the stage and sings all of West End Girl from start to finish to a backing track. Like a play, she has props and costume changes but no interaction with the crowd. Some fans, of course, do not like that. Allen addressed them today.

That's a little astrology joke for you regarding the announcement of The Underworld, the Philly indie-folk band's follow-up to their 2022 debut Radiator. The album emerged from a period of struggle for frontperson G DeGroot during which they physically couldn't sing. "I was having chronic pain, problems with my voice, gut issues," they explain in a press release. "It felt so urgent to try and keep things going, but my body was saying no."
