French Oi Crew Squelette Release Extremely Cool New EP Soir d’Orage

Tom Breihan — Fri, 02 Oct 2026 20:48:45 +0000

I'm not sure how or why this happened, but the nation of France has developed its own take on oi, the chant-along street-punk style that once seemed definitively British. French bands like Syndrome 81, Prisonnier Du Temps, Oi Boys, and Rancoeur have developed an echo-drenched take on oi that combines the original music with goth and post-punk, creating a dank, mysterious, and incredibly cool sound. Its influence is spreading, as bands like Quebec's Béton Armé and Edmonton's Home Front seem to be drawing from some of the same same wells.

Bonnie “Prince” Billy & Linus Announce Jules de Corte Tribute Album, Share Three Songs

Tom Breihan — Fri, 02 Oct 2026 20:00:04 +0000

Up until this very afternoon, I'd never heard of Jules de Corte, a blind Dutch singer-songwriter who won some European prizes in the '60s and who died in 1996 at the age of 71. I'd also never heard of the improvisational Belgian quartet Linus. I had, however, heard of beloved roots-music weirdo Bonnie "Prince" Billy, so the news that he's making a Jules de Corte tribute album with Linus demanded further investigation.

Shane Parish Surprise Releases New Album Dental Work To Pay For His Dental Work

Chris DeVille — Fri, 02 Oct 2026 19:39:32 +0000

Six-string master Shane Parish has been in these (web)pages a fair amount in recent years, both for acoustic ventures like translating Autechre and Aphex Twin songs to guitar and electric pursuits like the Bill Orcutt Guitar Quartet. We also caught up with him last month at Philadelphia's Making Time ∞ festival, where it seems he was dealing with some health concerns. As a result, there's a new surprise Shane Parish album out today.

Members Of Guerilla Toss, SML, & PC Worship Team Up As Silk Fence: Stream Their Self-Titled Debut

Chris DeVille — Fri, 02 Oct 2026 19:10:07 +0000

The instrumental music trio Silk Fence brings together musicians with a long history of attention from this blog. Arian Shafiee, best known as a member of Guerilla Toss, plays electric guitar. Booker Stardrum, from SML and Play Time among other projects, handles drums and percussion. Justin Frye from PC Worship is on double bass and tapes. Together they've cooked up four lengthy excursions into the foggy, foreboding unknown.

The dark folk artist Marissa Nadler first met Stephen Brodsky, frontman of the heavy Boston bands Cave In and Mutoid Man, at Saint Vitus, the Brooklyn metal enclave that finally just reopened at a new location. Back in 2019, they released the collaborative album Droneflower and toured together. Now, it looks like they're back and they're using Droneflower as their band name.

Stray Kids Are Also Boycotting The Grammys

Tom Breihan — Fri, 02 Oct 2026 16:50:59 +0000

Back in July, the massively popular K-pop boy band BTS announced that they are boycotting next year's Grammys and refusing to submit any of their music for award consideration. This was a big pivot for the group, who performed on multiple Grammy telecasts and frequently talked about how badly they wanted to win one. (They've been nominated for five awards, but they've never won.) Now, Stray Kids, the second-biggest K-pop boy band, are following BTS' lead, evidently declining to submit any new music for Grammy consideration.

DIIV – “Trillions”

Tom Breihan — Fri, 02 Oct 2026 16:14:23 +0000

"DIIV GOES POP." We know that's true because it says so on the cover of the Rolling Stone. The fictional Rolling Stone, anyway. Probably not the real one. I haven't checked. In the video for DIIV's new song "Trillions," the members of the band rock expensive suits, lounge around glamorous and expensive-looking residences, fan themselves with crisp $20 bills, and read magazine stories about their own changing sound. Print media, baby! It's still good for something!

King Hüsky – “Punks In The Beerlight” (Silver Jews Cover)

Chris DeVille — Fri, 02 Oct 2026 15:49:20 +0000

Everyone loves David Berman. The late, great Silver Jews/Purple Mountains auteur commanded a faithful audience in his lifetime, but he increasingly feels like the most influential figure in 2020s indie rock. That apparently extends to artists outside the rugged, oblique, country-fried bands directly in Berman's sphere of influence.

Secrecy Announce Debut EP Winter In A&E: Hear “Knife In My Dreams”

Tom Breihan — Fri, 02 Oct 2026 15:26:30 +0000

Secrecy: Good name for a punk band! It calls to mind the Germs' "What We Do Is Secret," as well as the general sense of a hidden underground world that regards outsiders with suspicion. London's appropriately mysterious Secrecy have a big, propulsive sound — coarse hardcore vocals, reverb-drenched guitar jangle, booming drums. They bring a sense of frenetic darkness that recalls the moment that goth first emerged out of punk. There's at least a bit of Stone Roses glimmer in there, too.

Way Dynamic Is Letting It Flow, And Good Things Are Happening

Chris DeVille — Fri, 02 Oct 2026 15:13:06 +0000

Way Dynamic is a funny moniker for a band so chill. Dylan Young has been recording under that name since his university days at RMIT in Melbourne about a decade ago, and the project has ramped up in the 2020s with a trio of albums crafted in tandem with Good Morning's Stefan Blair. But things really picked up with last year's Massive Shoe, a casually excellent '60s and '70s throwback that evokes everyone from Paul McCartney to Nick Drake to Talking Heads.

The Rolling Stones Share Bonus Track With Charlie Watts, Music Video With Alexander Skarsgård

Tom Breihan — Fri, 02 Oct 2026 14:37:44 +0000

Foreign Tongues, the new album from the Rolling Stones, is merely the latest in the string of late-career Stones records that are way, way more impressive than they had to be. The LP came out in July, but its rollout isn't finished yet. Foreign Tongues did not feature the strutting Mick Jagger/Keith Richards duet "Bad Luck Hideaway," one of the songs that the band recorded with their late drummer Charlie Watts, who passed away in 2021. The song did appear as a bonus track on digital editions, but it wasn't previously on streaming services.

Olivia Dean Song Accused of Copying Bill Withers Hit in New Lawsuit

Tom Breihan — Fri, 02 Oct 2026 13:55:34 +0000

In 1980, the soul great Bill Withers teamed up with jazz saxophonist Grover Washington, Jr. to release the heartfelt love song "Just The Two Of Us." It's technically Washington's song, as it came out in his album Winelight, but Withers co-wrote it with Ralph MacDonald and William Salter, and his vocal is the part that everyone remembers. "Just The Two Of Us" was a major hit upon release, reaching #2 on the Hot 100. Over the years, it has been covered, sampled, and referenced countless times. Now, Withers' publisher is accusing the hugely successful young British pop star Olivia Dean of ripping it off.

Tyler, The Creator Says His Feature On Quavo’s New Album Is One Of The Best In Rap History

Tom Breihan — Fri, 02 Oct 2026 13:18:26 +0000

What's the best rap verse of all time? There's no definitive answer to that question, and there never will be. It's all subjective, and it should be subjective. If you ask me on the right day, I might say Bun B's verse on UGK's "Murder" is the all-time champion. Another day, I might say it's Pimp C's verse on UGK's "One Day" — different rapper, different song, same group, same album. Rappers themselves are supposed to say that their own verses are the best of all time. They're supposed to believe it, too. That's part of the game. If your job is projecting larger-than-life confidence to the rest of the world, you need to really feel that you're the best.

Imagine finding out, deep into middle age, that you're the son of the honey-gargling king of yacht rock. Michael Goessling, a St. Louis resident, recently had just such an experience when he found out that he's Michael McDonald's son. For his whole life, Goessling knew that he was adopted. His parents conceived him when both of them were 14 years old, and he was put up for adoption as an infant. But Goessling didn't learn until much later that one of his parents grew up to become Michael McDonald.

Hudson Freeman Announces New Album Doom Country: Hear “Fell Ass Backwards”

Chris DeVille — Thu, 01 Oct 2026 17:13:01 +0000

Hudson Freeman came to my attention at the end of last year, when the Pitchfork critic-turned-music producer Nick Sylvester wrote about him in a Substack post called "This is the song I shared most last year." Sylvester wrote about a "demo" version of Freeman's song "If You Know Me" that went viral on Instagram, which is less a demo than a lo-fi live performance video shot in a Southern Indiana cornfield. "His guitar is hiked up high, and you can see the bottom three strings visibly vibrate when he strums them – perhaps because of some esoteric tuning, but either way it completes the hillbilly vibe," Sylvester wrote.

SNL Roasts Stella Leffy In Cut-For-Time Weekend Update Segment

Tom Breihan — Thu, 01 Oct 2026 17:02:06 +0000

Stella Lefty must be so happy about all the Ed Sheeran stuff. Before Sheeran submitted to billionaire demands and kicked Macklemore off of his tour, Lefty, the Groupon heiress turned flavorless country-folk-pop singer, was the easiest snark-target in the music world. Lefty's breakout smash "Boston," still the #2 song in America, was a big enough bite of Noah Kahan's recent hit "Stick Season" that Kahan got writing credit, and then people kept noticing that other songs from Lefty's debut album were blatant ripoffs of other obvious popular songs. The "Stella Thefty" jokes wrote themselves. Now, Saturday Night Live has shared a cut-for-time Weekend Update bit built on the "Stella Lefty keeps stealing other people's songs" premise.
