I have made the decision finally to something that has been hovering around for a few months now.

I am going to give up TV.

OK, that sounds like a big thing and to be honest I won't give it up entirely.

I am however tired of chasing TV in a way I have never had to do in the past and it has become both frustrating and boring at the same time.

I have found myself just drifting away from all the shows I used to watch. Many of them were just boring rehashes of past shows that I do not need to see over and over again.

Others are 30 minute shows extended to 60 minutes with re-cap's before and after every ad break so I end up being told the same things over and over with very little new content. I have stopped watching those and any I do watch I now fast forward, though as they annoy me, they are destined for the bin too.

I have issues with shows that pretend to be new, some have new in the title, some have new in the description, you watch them and you have seen them before, so they are NOT new. Why do the tv companies lie to me, what they think I will have forgotten?

Also the ones that truly are new either aren't marked as new or get lost in the sea of shows saying they are new but are not, so they get missed.

I will watch the things I can find that are obviously new and interest me but those are becoming harder and harder to find.

All in all, its just too much hard work on my part, when it should be the tv companies doing the hard work and I have just had my fill of that. So they lost me.

On a more positive note, what I am doing is listening to more podcasts at a time when I see more and more podcasters stop producing their shows and that really saddens me.

If anyone has heard of me, it's probably due to my mentions on various podcast shows. I am not out to seek the limelight, in fact if I wanted that I would have just kept doing my own show, which I did for four years.

No, what I have been seeking to do is to talk to the podcasters, show interest and a little bit of love so that they feel that what they are doing is worth something to someone out there, which all of them are, even if we don't say it.

The trouble is, by not saying anything we are loosing them.

Please, make it part of your day to send a commment or something to your favourite podcaster, make them know, without a doubt, that you are there and what they are doing interests you, communicate with them.

Please!

Ooooh! It's been a while since I last posted hasn't it and it was such an angry one, well I have been sitting in a darkened room with a damp sponge on my head to keep me calm :-)

What is with the weird birthday reminders we seem to get a lot of these days?

It's anything for a party isn't it, which come to think of it, is not a bad idea, someone turn on the music!

Well, after all that Apple rumour fest I am thoroughly disappointed.

Great news for potential iPod Nano users.

Yet once again us iPod Touch users are punched hard in the stomach and expected to like it.

No, no! No mam!

I am now tired of this and yes I have heard the rumours about camera issues and I don't care.

The iPod touch should have come with a camera, there is no reason for it not to have one, none at all and no reason will excuse Apple for this.

If there was a manufacturing problem, again that is no reason not to launch the product, they launch plenty products with an advance shipment date.

And wait for one moment, how come the new iPod Touch update is free, I thought Californian law forbid that? OK its A 0.01 release, and maybe that is legal.

But I am in the UK, Europe. I am sold the product by Apple UK, not Apple in California, I live in the UK not California, I am billed by Apple in Luxembourg for iTunes NOT Cali-fucking-fornia, so why I am being ruled by Californian laws here? I would like the European Union to investigate that one for me please!

An FM radio, really. Well ok the US has fucked up their transition to digital for radio, but so have we Europeans. The US wins for TV digital transition (We in the UK started first and we wont finish till 2012/13 crap!), we introduced DAB which is low quality streaming over the air. Again, crap. But FM is being turned off in a few years here so not really that exciting news for us. FM is a dead technology, so not something I really want.

No new AppleTV which is now so overdue for an update it's laughable, where the fuck do you buy those 40Gb drives from Apple, the local recycling yard? Support it or kill it. Make up your fucking mind!

No iPad, but that was hardly a surprise, though I do see hints of it.

More focus on gaming, which I absolutely expected. This is their next market to eat up.

Here is what I would like to see:

A camera in the Touch, sooner rather than later otherwise your just going to totally piss off everyone that just bought a Touch. Not that you care.

Dump the classic next time around, we don't really need it if you can squeeze 128Gb into a Touch.

Drop the AppleTV as it is and re-launch. IT should be a new unit with an upgraded processor and graphics chip. Slightly more memory. Bigger hard drive, base would start at 120Gb. It would also have apps. It would work in conjunction with the iPhone and Touch initially and then have its own contollers. It would be a media player, movie rental device and a gaming machine!

Let the iPod and iPhone work like the Nintendo DS, portable games that talk to the AppleTV's games. Maybe let their motion sensors control on-screen action. Basically replace the Wii.

I do want an iPad but I want a full computer with no drives, just USB sockets and an on-screen keyboard. Upgraded touch compatible Front Row. Comes with a stand. Use it on the move, go home and use your plug in or ideally wireless apple keyboard and mighty mouse and you have a reasonable though not top of the range home computer.

I guess I want a lot.

Just do me one favour stop kicking the iPod Touch users in the nuts with upgrades at a price and crappy feature upgrades, as you yourselves said, they are the biggest growing market for iPods, so why treat them like shit?

I'm getting the same feelings I did when things started to slide at Microsoft and I personally am getting pissed off.

Oh and don't try the iTunes 9 Genius DJ Mixer, its totally crap. The playlists are better, the mixer just picks a song at random and generates a playlist from it, not exactly rocket science! Bit see thru that one! Like changing the colour of the box of washing powder and calling it NEW AND IMPROVED! I think not.

So angry today, so angry arent I, ooooh, just had to let it all out!

LOL

Oh yes, and Dear Beatles, make your fucking mind up, are you digital or arent you because I am so fucking sick and tired of hearing your going to someone or other I just don't fucking care any more! It was 50 fucking years ago! GET OVER YOURSELVES (and McCartneys greed in my opinion!) Otherwise all your target market.......will be dead before they get to buy these things!

Bad Day.

iPod has gone phut and died.

This is a disaster for me as I like to listen to podcasts and have done for years now, always had an iPod, lots of music that will only play on an iPod too.

I am not working at the moment and there is no way I can stretch to a new one.

So that really hampers my ability to listen to podcasts.

So I am putting a plea out to anyone that has anything spare, and I know that isnt many of you right now.

I have some iPods on my Amazon Wishlist, if anyone can help me out, I will return the favour later on when I can.

Big changed in Europe this week with the sales of old incandescent light bulbs being banned.

From Tuesday 1st September 2009 it will be illegal to sell opaque or pearl incandescent light bulbs, you will for a while still be able to purchase the clear ones, the candle ones, etc until they are phased out in a year or two.

There are a lot of people moaning about being forced to change but just look at the facts.

These new compact fluorescents last so much longer, often up to 8-10 years. That is a fact as I have had them since they came out, back then they were a lot more expensive.

Now you often get them for free from your local electricity company or at least for only a pound ($1-2) from most shops. Unless your unlucky or stupid enough to pay more!

Now the main point, who the hell would want to purchase a light that cost them so much to run?

I estimated that an average family would spend somewhere around £24.52 ($60) on lighting a year.

And if they simply switched their bulbs, a quick plug and go, they would pay only £4.50 ($10) a year!

I'm not a professor of mathematics but even if my figures are a bit out these are massive savings.

Not only to your pocket but to all that waste, all that coal and gas and oil that will be burned to fuel these idiots.

So get off your fat asses and change those bulbs now.

It will help all of us and you will save lots of money too.

You would literally have to be mad not to!

(Sure there are a VERY few people that are sensitive to the flickering, very few and those people will still be able to buy the old bulbs, that is a medical condition, so no issues there from me. As a medical product in a niche market of course the price will go up, but then that is to be expected)

I just get tired of those that try and play the King Canute role, the tide is coming in folks, get boots or get wet feet!

How Apple can continue to beat Microsoft

Apple is getting near to the point where Microsoft started to fail and here is my take on it.

Microsoft was everyone's favourite company, cast your mind back I know it was a while ago! :-)

They innovated but most importantly they listened.

They listened to the people that bought their software, they listened to all the new things they wanted, all the changes their users thought needed to be made.

And they made that software and they made those changes, until....

....someone said, hey wait, we can make money by making it difficult.

And that was the end.

They realised that by making their software less intuitive, less responsive, less useable you would need to employ a Microsoft Certified Engineer.

And they could charge to train those engineers.

And they could charge for supporting companies, and they could charge for so many things.

And they forgot all about the user.

They forgot where their actual revenue stemmed from......the user.

And that was indeed the end.

Another company rose up and listened to their users.

That company was Apple.

So Apple, do you keep listening, with Snow Leopard you continue to add and update by listening to your users.

Sure sometimes you have to make a decision on something and some people won't like it but if you seriously cockup and eventually change then thats ok, we are all human.

Only never stop listening or you will become the next Microsoft.....for sure!

Who could wait for the Snow Leopard?!

Actually I have tried the Snow Leopard and it is noticeably faster than Leopard.

So my recommendation of course....go get it!!!!

I mean its £25 here in the UK after all.

Less than an evenings heartburn from the local takeaway!

Well I did not have to close the old station down like I said. In honesty I did close it, then open it, then change it then run it for a it before selling it.

So the thing made me some money which is nice, not enough to buy me that island I wanted. (Don't worry Kim Beaver I didn't get enough to buy the Faeroe Islands, I would have let you stay...the rest of the people however, maybe not, LOL, unless they were nice to me.)

Talking about the Kim Beavers, I watched a new episode of Coast on the BBC HD's the other day all about the Faroe Island's in the HDs. Very nice, stunning scenery, if you get a chance to catch it when it comes your way take a look. Lots of interesting facts about wartime in the Faeroe Islands. Then a bit about St.Olaf/Olav's day, etc. I might even have seen Kim's place...ooooh!

Like Archerr I suffer from the GERD and it's been getting worse lately so someone is going to shove something big and black greased up and shoved down my throat, Big Fatty calm yourself! An endescope, I said calm yourself! So some poor fool is going to be poking around inside my throat and stomach, gawd knows what they might find in there, couple of tires, an old boot, the crew of the Marie Celeste! So wish me luck, might be a week or two before I get the appointment through, its not an urgent procedure apparently.

I am so very sad today.

I am having to close my baby down.

I started a streaming internet radio station and grew it to have over 20,000 listeners tune in.

Sadly, I am unable to fund it any longer as I am not working at present and my limited finances can no longer support the station which was growing at a fantastic rate of 50% per month!

I tried to offer advertising on the station and website, I also tried to secure donations from the listeners but as much as everyone loved the music, they probably like many others could not part with cash to help us out.

I tried to find sales people but as I could not offer wages, just commissions, no one took up the offer in the harsh economic climate.

I have loved building the dream and having it loved by so many people around the world, 144 countries at last count.

That is why I am so sad to close it down.

I had such great plans, so many things I wanted to do, so many wonderful ideas.

So I am in the process of closing it all down, its still up and running for a few hours more.

Then it will vanish, the website will be pointed to a holding page and in a couple of months the domains will expire.

A sad day.

Any millionaires got a spare cheque they don't need? :-)

I didn't write on the passing of another legend and I just wanted to say something about them.

Danny La Rue wanted to be remembered as a female impersonator and not a drag artist.

He was certainly more than a niche act and certainly in the UK there aren't many who don't know his name.

I never had the chance to see him on stage, a place I think he felt most at home and I only knew of him via his few television appearances in the 70s and 80s, although his career spanned many decades.

I found a film he did called Our Miss Fred not so long ago. He is a triumph playing a British soldier at the time of WWII in France who ends up having to dress and act like a woman in order to escape and bring important invasion news back to Britain. He is amazing, as both the soldier and his female impersonations, his costumes are stunning and he is a riot. If you have never seen the movie, go and get it and if you love british comedy you will love this, it is now one of my favorite comedy films.

The stars appear to be falling from the skies in the last few days with more and more deaths being reported all kicked off by the shock announcement of Michael Jacksons death the other day.

One of my favourite comedy actors has passed, Mollie Sugden, whom many of you will remember playing Mrs Slocombe, from the hit BBC sitcom Are You Being Served? based on the goings on at Grace Bros. department store. The show itself was based on the real life Simpsons department store in Piccadilly, now Waterstones bookshop. (Take a look in the real shop and see why the lifts were up a flight of stairs in the show!)

I also loved That's My Boy where she is a mother who has given up her child for adoption, only to find him again in later life but insists on calling him by his original name of Wayne, much to his dismay! As someone who was also adopted this was the first time I remember main stream television tackaling the subject and the fact that it was in a comedy series really helped me feel less unusual I remember.

Also was the series, Come Back Mrs Noah, where poor Molly is Mrs Noah a British housewife inspecting Britains latest space vehicle (there have been so many LOL) in 2050 and is accidentally blasted into space. That show wasn't a hit but I do remember enjoying it once you got past the first episode. I can still see her shooting around the spacecraft in zero G on a jet of perfume, LOL

So many of my memories of Molly are filled with laughter that her passing is particularly sad.

As someone on the BBC website said today, who will look after Mrs Slocombe's pussy now?

After that last post maybe this is favoritism? Tough! LOL

I have just got hold of the Motorola SoundPilot S705 A2DP Bluetooth headphone adapter.

This device lets you go wireless with your iPod Touch 2nd Gen with 3.0 software upgrade.

It is so amazing to walk around the house with this clipped to your belt, wearing the headphones of YOUR choice, either the ones supplied or my fancy shcmancy Sennheiser's. You can pause and play the iPod Touch and also control the volume from the device joystick. If you finish your podcast you can then switch to FM radio and tune into something crap locally (naughty me!).

The unit will also connect to your mobile as a handsfree with it's built in microphone (sadly not on the iPod Touch!)

Also it has a built in RDS FM receiver, which is pretty cool for a device this size.

Battery life is an amazing 7 hours on one charge, the unit comes with a belt clip, lanyard, pouch, headphones with three sets of those cloth covers and a mains charger.

If I hear that one more time I will scream!

Sure, any phone can have touch this and slide that and keyboard this and music that but lets face it, no matter what they add....it is NEVER an iPhone, with iTunes sync, all those apps and just the cache of having an F'ing iPhone.

Oooooh I am on a rant aren't I? I should be blowing it out with Big Fatty!!!

I've got a Zune....it's just like an iPod.....oh yeah, so much like it! LOL

That is my rant over...and relax! LOL

Pride48.com What a great weekend

Well, the weekend is behind us and I have thankfully had some sleep!

I was totally hooked on Pride48.com over the weekend and found it really difficult to switch off, even to sleep and spent both nights awake listening to shows.

Being in the UK of course the prime time shows in the states were in the middle of the night for me, but that was ok.

There is talk of another event later in the year and I will definately tune in for that, if you missed it, many of the shows which are still listed on the homepage of Pride48.com have posted bits of their live shows so you can at least get a flavor of what was happeneing.

Thanks to all the pocasters and Daniel Brewer and Auntie Vera Charles for their hard work and dedication, it really paid off guys!

Google does hate.

They are closing down Kim Beaver's site as they have marked it as spam.

How utterly outrageous!

I love reading and sharing Kim's blog with everyone else in the Gay podosphere and I am angry and outraged that Google are threatening to remove the site.

This is Pride weekend and they are going to remove a Lesbian blogger. Sad.

Come on Google and Blogger, change this decision now before its too late and all that work is lost.

A while back when Archerr from Archerr Radio was getting his new iMac and MacBook and all the hundreds of other Apple products he was maxing out his credit card with I had said I was getting a new iPod but I ended up not getting the one I had said and instead purchased the tiny iPod Nano 4G.

Well, today I took delivery of my brand new shiny lovely Apple iPod Touch 2G, Woooooow!

Sorry, just so happy to have an iPod Touch again. Not that I hated the Nano, but Apple are very clever with their feature reduction as you go down the line. Little things were a big pain such as not knowing how long a podcast is BEFORE you play it, and therefore mark it as being played were just inconvenient. There were other things that were taken out, nothing major, it still played music and sounded amazing and did all the things it needed to do but those little extras make such a big difference.

One big difference, apps, wow I never used them a lot but I did miss them! I'm a simple guy at heart and I loves my Battleships, ConnectFour, Hangman, Mini-Golf etc. Bowling was so good on the iPod touch too as well as a load of other games.

So this new iPod Touchy Feely arrives in the most minimalist packaging you can imagine, lift one sticker and the plastic see through case opens, lift the iPod Touch sticker to reveal the iPod Touch itself. Lift it out, bend the plastic plate that it sits in/on and oh my! it's so light compared to the last one which was pretty much a brick that lit up :-)

Plug it into the Mac and it makes noises, oooh, thats new. Can't wait to try the new in-built speaker which is such a major thing! as are the volume buttons, so handy! Who gets excited about volume buttons, just me and Archerr, thats who! LOL

The screen seems clearer and maybe slightly better at doing the multitouch pinching, the old iPod Touch never seemed great at doing that but that may have been the one I had.

It's all working beautifully and the speaker is an extra bonus, great for use as an internet radio now!

Glad to have an iPod Touch once more and glad to have these little extras and I hear battery life is increased by around 10 hours which is amazing considering how light it is now.

The 21-year-old will star alongside new Time Lord Matt Smith in the new series, to be broadcast next year.

Eurovision 2010 Dates Confirmed

The 55th running of the Eurovision Song Contest will take place in the Oslo area, Host Broadcaster NRK and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) jointly announced today.

The two Semi-Finals and Grand Final of the contest are now confirmed to take place on:

First Semi-Final: Tuesday 25 May, 2010

Second Semi-Final: Thursday 27 May, 2010

Grand Final: Saturday 29 May, 2010.

A venue to host the competition is still to be chosen but is expected to be the brand new Telenor Arena in Oslo.

Eurovision 2009, Moscow

I thoroughly enjoyed this year show in Moscow, as expected it was a huge event in the refurbished olympic stadium which was just a massive space, one of the biggest arena's I have ever seen.

The acts put on a great show for everyone and I loved the stage which was also massive and had more LED's than I even knew existed! LOL. The moving set was a triumph.

I was totally entranced by the interval act where giant...and I mean giant, football pitch sized pools descended from the ceiling complete with performance art swimmers, right down so the audience could touch them and even the green room had its own pool. Something I would never had dreamed of even in my wildest dreams and was just mesmerizing to watch, certainly up there with interval acts such as River Dance. Stunning.

Even the Semi-Finals had their own opening acts that were different to the Grand Final this year so they were definitely worth watching and with less sound problems than in previous years.

Moscow managed to shed its old image and promote itself as a thoroughly modern city which will no doubt boost tourism and as the show cost almost $50 Million, I bet they are glad to get something back.

I can't wait for next year, I have every confidence Norway will put on an amazing show and I bet they will prove the old addage 'Size isn't everything!'.

Woke to a thunder storm right outside my window. You know it's close when the lightening and thunder are on top of each other. So who counts the seconds between each to find out the distance? For every 5 seconds that go by before you hear the clap of thunder, that’s one mile.

Expected to get my new ATM cards but none of them have shown up so hope they haven't gone missing or that will a nightmare.

I have started to fit my surround sound system again, just need to run the cable to the rear speakers, which is always a bit of a pain, wish they were those wireless types but I cannot afford a new setup right now being that I am not working. Good to have better sound that the TV provides, although the TV does do some fairly good sound.

Got the Twitters setup on the mobile phone, eventually, don't know why but every time I linked it no messages would appear in my Twitter feed but glad to say that is working. I get free text messages on my mobile plan so that is going to be cool, so expect some twitter messages now, you can find me at http://www.twitter.com/steveintheukok

Hi,

Well I am back!

I have a proper phone and internet connection again and no longer have to hover near windows to get a decent mobile signal....yeay!!!!

I've also listened to a ton of podcasts while I have been gone. I can't say I have caught up on everyone yet but many of the shows I am up to date on.

I am finding that I am listening to more podcasts these days as TV here in the UK is pretty dire, full of repeats and poor quality low budget shows. The credit crunch has really hit TV badly here.

I am though a bit disappointed that I am not finding more video podcasts to watch and have yet to find a site that links to or reviews video podcasts. I find iTunes is a bit of a dissapointment when it comes to podcasts and video podcasts. It's always the same top 100 and even if you try and drill down to the sub-genres many of the shows haven't been updated in years or have no shows at all to download. Sad, a real opportunity missed for the sake of a bit of housekeeping.
