When Maria and I staged the first Stickers and Donuts school supplies celebration, we weren’t even in school. We both succumbed to the 9-5 lifestyle, and tried (with all our might) to skirt around becoming a what-is-it-about-20-something. And as all little girls dream about greater things beyond their immediate life, we envisioned ourselves lying on quads, with our fingers waffled through plushy blades of grass. Loads of grass.

In reality, our dreams manifested in posts on notebooks and pens, and all the great materialistic things associated with school. A year later, Maria went off to University of Virginia to terrorize undergraduates with multi-colored syllabi (just kidding, Maria), and I just completed my first week at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. I do not get to terrorize fledglings with fun syllabi. I AM a fledgling.

To commemorate the fact that we are both in school, you will get to enjoy a special bombardment of back to school posts. Like shoes. Shoes would fall under the “back to school” category. And books. (Because there’s just so much reading you can do on neonatal mortality.)

This year is even MORE special, because there is a GIVEAWAY involved. One reader will win some tight Stickers and Donuts buttons made by Busy Beaver Buttons, and two fantastic JetPens gifts: a Nomadic Triple Pouch Pencil Case and a Stad K’Zool Multi Wooden Pencil Sharpener (more information on these below)! Per usual Stickers and Donuts giveaway rules: to enter, comment on this post (by September 12) . We will select the winner by a random number generator. To enter, you must live in the US (sorry international friends)!

1. I am a big supporter of post-it note flags. My piles of reading assignments are littered with translucent flags, to such an extent that I’ve devalued the importance of each flag. These page markers are much cuter than mine. I think they’re supposed to be snow white and the seven dwarves, but the little men look like lawn gnomes. And lawn gnomes make me think of playing the Sims. Yeesh. Fairytale Page Flags from Patina, $5

2. Poor handwriting? Start using grid paper. It will do wonders for your handwriting, and your future secretary (for when you are big and powerful) will be eternally grateful. Given my past as one of THOSE secretaries, I can affirm that this fact is true. (Also this grid notebook is designed by Jason Munn. We interviewed him ages ago!). The Grid Notebook by Jason Munn from Little Otsu, $6

3. These pens have become my favorite pens, and have never failed me while I’m trying to furiously scribble notes because my laptop is too old/heavy to bring to class. I once bought a couple of these pens for someone, and he immediately purchased a box of them. They are that great. I swear. Uni-ball Signo DX UM-151 Gel Ink Pen in BORDEAUX BLACK (!!!) 0.38mm from JetPens, $2.25

4. If you cringe when people dog flag pages in one of your books, you probably have secretly fantasized about getting a library embosser. OR, you haven’t fantasized about such a thing, but now that I’m bringing it up, getting one sounds like a good idea. I bought this for a friend, and she seemed to enjoy it. So much so that after she got it, a sheet of paper was filled with the same embossed image of her name fifteen times. Well, that’s what she reported. Library Embosser from Horchow, $26

5. My confession: I have had John Derian for Target in my Google Calendar for a month. John Derian is a designer based in NYC, who puts my mod-podge skills to shame. His home goods feature beautiful 18th/19th century illustrations, which are unfortunately out of the grad school, or even non-grad school budget. I’ve already shared my love of vintage science illustrations, so of course I am pro-John Derian. John Derian for Target Animal Wastebasket from Target, $30

6. I use Mirando Black Warrior pencils. 70% of this behavior stems from the fact that it is deeply gratifying using a pencil named “black warrior.” It is like you have a pencil advantage over someone who may be using something inferior. Like a pencil called “black cadet.” Mirando Black Warriors sharpen exceptionally well. For pencils that don’t sharpen well, however, a good pencil sharpener is necessary to abate the frustration of a BROKEN PENCIL LEAD. This pencil sharpener has an adjustable dial, so you can control lead length. It even won a Japan Good Design Award, and I am all about accolades. Except that one time my friends and I tried barefoot wine out of curiosity (it had a gold medal sticker). A very regrettable choice. Stad K’Zool Multi Wooden Pencil Sharpener from JetPens, $4.50

7. Oh Joy! is one of the most solid blogs I read. As a result, I can click on Oh Joy!, and never suffer shock over seeing something really hideous and questionable. This never happens. Since Oh Joy! is far cooler than me, she has designed all kinds of pretty notebooks and stationery- like this notepad. Oh Joy! Noteblock from Chronicle Books, $15

8. A few months ago, I reviewed the Nomadic Wise-Walker backpack (thanks for all the nice comments!), and now that school has begun, I am finding the backpack incredibly reliable for daily use. This pencil pouch shares similar characteristics to its backpack sibling: it’s lightweight and has lots of pockets. Nomadic Triple Pouch Pencil case from JetPens, $12

9. I’m unfortunately on an 8-week quarter schedule now, which I do not enjoy. At all. Last week in NYC, I picked up these notebooks, which are recycled, very portable and a perfect size for an 8-week term. Recycled Paper Note from Muji, $4 (set of five notebooks)

I’ve moved to Baltimore. I’ve started grad school. I need Baltimore adventure ideas and amusement, because right now I just have piles of schoolwork and I miss Chicago.

Here’s another clue regarding the above picture: CLUE-CLICK-ME. I would have embedded it (I mean Kevin Spacey’s face would heighten the cool factor of this post by a factor of 20), but I guess the owner has embedding disabled? Dream crushed.

Hello, S&D fans!

Hello, S&D fans!

It has been too long since I posted, mostly because I was trying to cram science and algebra knowledge into the heads of uninterested 6th and 7th graders. I’ve learned (or re-learned, I should say) more about gravity and friction and point-slope formulas and intercepts than I ever really wanted to. ANYWAY. It’s June now, and SCHOOL IS OUT FOR SUMMER! While this is bad for my wallet it is excellent for my sketchbook, because it is SKETCHCRAWL TIME, PEOPLE!

Something about this reminds me of Harold and the Purple Crayon

You’ve heard of PubCrawls/BarCrawls, where one travels from place to place getting progressively drunker. SketchCrawls have the same concept, but replacing drunkenness with crippling hand pains. Or, you know, adding it onto the drunkenness. You can go it alone (which is sad to do with a PubBarCrawl) or in a group, visiting places you frequent or areas previously unknown. Enrico Casarosa, the founder of the SketchCrawl, puts it like this:

The basic idea: to record nonstop everything I could around me with my pencil and watercolors. A drawn journal filled with details ranging from the all the coffee I drank to the different buses I took. After a whole day of drawing and walking around the city the name seemed quite fitting: ‘SketchCrawl’ – a drawing marathon.

Bicycles and puppies; two of my favorite things!

Drawings can be super fancy or quick thumbnails, black and white or full-blown Technicolor Marvels done in fancy fancy sketchbooks or on napkins you steal from each location you visit. Enrico Casarosa, the founder of the SketchCrawl, has compiled a list of suggested materials in this here fancy drawing:

The next planned worldwide SC is on July 31st, 2010, so you can visit the forums to meet up with other Crawlers or just go for it now!

There’s even an official t-shirt! That is crazy!

It has gotten to a point that this has become a running joke. Last Birthday? A friend even mailed me a Hello Kitty pinata from the grand land of Tijuana. How do we feel about these Dr. Martens? The white ones kind of creep me out, but the ones with Sanrio critters are a little cute…

This fall, I will be awakening my dormant brain and returning to school. Although there are several outstanding matters regarding this move (How will I transport my heavy cookbooks? How will I get all my dresses to Baltimore? What if I don’t make any friends? What if I never end up meeting anyone from Charm City Cakes while in Baltimore? What if I don’t get the opportunity to ask Victoria Legrand what kind of shampoo she uses for her long Beach-House-y locks?), a pestering concern is how I will handle the feeling of schlepping books in East Baltimore. It’s not like my current job demands me to carry a lot of scholarly materials full of scholarly things that will allow me to save lives “millions at a time.”

Oddly enough, Lily from JetPens must have been able to hear this reverberating concern in my mind, because a month ago she graciously sent me one of JetPens’ newest products to test: the Nomadic CB-01 Wise Walker Multi Compartment Day Pack. Nomadic is a popular brand of bags in Japan, and has built its reputation based on its high level of functionality in the urban environment (have you seen how crowded a Japanese subway can get? Or, more selfishly, have you seen how crowded the El gets during rush hour?) and durability. JetPens is one of the few domestic retailers of Nomadic bags. As someone who prefers a messenger bag (but hates the disproportionate shoulder pain), I was really excited to see if this bag could convert me into a backpack user. My main complaints with backpacks:

They are too heavy and overwhelming for someone who is relatively short and small.

They make me feel like I’m in elementary school (this is also connected to the cries of disproportion stated in point one).

You’d think I could solve the first two points by simply getting a smaller backpack. HOWEVER, this course of action leads to a) me having to hold too many things in my tiny hands (they are exceptionally small) because there aren’t enough pockets and b) me feeling like I’ve suddenly time traveled to the 90s and I’m Blossom with a tiny backpack ready to be filled with sunflowers.

I was initially struck with how lightweight and small the bag is. It’s made out of parachute material, which makes the bag featherly and easy to clean. I told my coworker that it’s so small and cute that I’d want to pinch its cheeks. It has no cheeks. But if it is so petite, how will I fit everything I need to carry around?

Deceivingly small (40 cm (H) X 24 cm (W) X 19 cm (D)), the Nomadic Wise-Walker Day Pack is filled with pockets. And they are huge (I kept thinking of a Harry Potter tent). The above picture is of the front pocket…

…and this is the middle pocket. I’ve been told that these middle pockets are great for iPads and Kindles. Since I have neither, I can also attest to the fact that they’re good for storing books that you don’t want crumpled or dog-eared. “But, Tricia. Can you actually fit anything in the bag?!”

Look! Even Snuggle Pup fits at the bottom of the third pocket! Yes, this bag will not carry my laptop, but my laptop is a mammoth. This won’t be a problem, however, since I don’t think I will want to carry my laptop around classes. The bag does fit binders and notebooks (I checked), and there are plenty spaces for pens.

There are an overwhelming number of pockets in the bag! The first day of use, I failed to pack my bag the night before, and it was too disorienting (I lost my cell phone that morning)! LESSON: There is a reason that Nomadic includes a pocket map to their bag: DON’T UNDERESTIMATE POCKET ORIENTATION.

I do not understand Japanese (although I think suggested pocket 7 is for a minidisc player?), but the map did help me plot my own personal pocket usage. Since I haven’t started school yet, I use my bag for the gym. In pocket 9 (is that a bento box in the picture? I hope so…), I store my sneakers. I suppose if you have gargantuan feet, this might not be feasible. Should this be an issue, pocket 1 will fit your sneakers. I use pocket 1 to hold my gym clothes. In terms of favorite pockets, that award goes to pocket 12, which I LITERALLY JUST DISCOVERED A SECOND AGO, while staring more closely at the pocket map. This is a great discovery, because during my month of backpack time, I have been complaining how there was no easily accessible place for my cell phone or wallet. Well thank you, magical backpack.

Beyond the pockets, I really enjoy the slimness of the bag. I’ve found that I can stuff it to the brim, but the bag won’t expand to an annoyingly large degree. It therefore allows me to squeeze onto the train without knocking someone out. As the occasional victim of bag knockouts, this bag is a glorious gift to my fellow public transportation riders.

To conclude, below is my best geeky recreation of a similar picture of me on the first day of school (6-years old). (No, in reality this is the product of my coworker taking a picture of me as quickly as he could before an attorney emerged from an office. As Patrick put it, “I think I caught you pre-smile.” Apologies for the unsightly look of disgust.) I really enjoy my Nomadic pack, and I’m excited to use it in Baltimore. Whether or not it will replace my messenger bag is questionable (especially if I need to bring my laptop to school), but given that this is the best backpack I’ve ever owned, there is a high chance that my messenger bag might be replaced.

According to Urban Dictionary, “Twee” means “buttocks or ass.” Isn’t that cute? (note I am not questioning Urban Dictionary’s validity- there is a period in my life where I was very dependent on Urban Dictionary to understand anything that came out of my friends’ mouths) Add an “s” to the end of that, and the result is a lovely little upbeat band from NYC. For those of you who are challenged by addition or the alphabet, that would be Twees.

Music reviews generally bore me, so I’ll do my best not to bore you (or, more selfishly, myself). When I first heard them I thought the vocalist sounds like if Julian Casablancas (that guy from the strokes) swallowed some extra pop rocks and chewed some extra bubble gum. Which led to hey remember when I used to sing a long to the Strokes “Last Night” incessantly during the tail end of high school, then I started college, and I met this kid named Allen Strickland Williams, who gave me a cd named “mao mix” that had that Strokes CD with “Reptilla.” My thoughts subsequently danced to traveling to Burma and seeing little lizards on the walls of the bungalow (a normal sight there), which are literally called like “house lizards.” The heat and warmth there is like the sweltering summer days in the Fall Creek Gorge in Ithaca, NY, and one time we sat there with the portable record player playing Beirut “Elephant Gun,” a frat boy asked us what we were listening to, we said “Beirut,” and he said “what like the game?”

So that’s what the Twees are like. Funny sunny days in gorges.

The Twees released two new songs today: Unfair Affair and Hepburn Shades (yes you can download them for free through those links). Furthermore, the entire EP is yours (for free too!) if you sign up for their mailing list here.

I usually am apathetic towards Spring. I enjoy Spring LIFE (tulips, bunnies…), however, I hate stuffy noses and ceaseless strings of sneezes. But if there’s anything that can get someone more excited for Spring, it’s Lula Magazine.

What was once a magazine of questionable existence to me (I used to cross my fingers that liebemarlene would post about it, since she seemed to have better luck than me at finding a copy), Lula is now mine! It appeared at the Borders near work on the exact date that the distributor gave me as its release date (yes, an embarrassing amount of effort to obtain a magazine). Although we are technically in the last month of Spring, thus making the previous anecdote irrelevant in a temporal sense, the Chicago Spring hasn’t kicked in yet. It’s the second week of May AND I am sitting on my back porch AND my nose feels like a dog’s AND I am wearing heattech tights AND legwarmers AND a scarf. Sustained warm weather, where art thou?

1. I like to imagine that Madewell is J.Crew’s rebellious little sister. I am excited for Alexa Chung for Madewell this fall (she’s fantastic!), but for now a Spring dress. That even has “Spring” in its name. Spring Garden Dress from Madewell, $145

2. The secret notes I write in the Spring have to be in pastel, otherwise someone else will deem me to have a frosty, unapproachable soul. Pastel pens for Spring! And they write on plastic! Pilot Latte Gel Ink Pens Pastel Color Series from JetPens, $18

3. If someone was picking my brain to find out what I consider to be the perfect swimsuit, they’d find a picture of this. Even though this is more of a “SUMMER” item, perhaps you people who live in warmer areas can put this to use RIGHT NOW. Perhaps it’s a good thing that I won’t be receiving mine until June (oh additional warning: it’s back ordered because there must be some global consensus that it is a perfect swimsuit). Natalie One-Piece from Anthropologie, $148

4. This reminds me of Little House on the Prairie, and how much I disliked The First Four Years, the only other Little House book that I owned. The Joyous Dress from ModCloth, $75

5. REALLY ADORABLE. I came across these when searching for new plants that I could buy-and-tend-to-and-love (R.I.P. lemon basil plant named “Cutlass”). Petit Coco Casserole Pots from Brooklyn5and10, $13

6. Is there a yellow equivalent to “nantucket red” and “cape cod blue”? Yellow Newport Cordones from TOMS, $69

7. A SECOND QUESTION: Will someone teach me how to properly ride a bike so I can go on bike adventures? Velorbis Studine Classic from Copenhagen Cyclery, $1300

Hi, friends. Like a terrible editor, I got sucked into a hole of moving, traveling, and singing “Just Like Heaven” more times than you can imagine. ABOVE IS AN ALMOST-COMPLETELY-ENCOMPASSING-AGGLOMERATION OF WHAT I HAVE DONE DURING OUR SEPARATION.

1. When we last met, I confessed a profound desire to throw a Johnny Weir party. My adoration has not dissipated, and has unquestionably intensified. Especially since I discovered that we get Sundance channel at home! Therefore, I can watch as much Be Good Johnny Weir as I want (until a certain roommate wants to watch Say Yes to the Dress). The show chronicles Johnny’s skating adventures leading up to the Winter Olympics, and will provoke you to shed tears of sorrow over not being best friends with Johnny Weir. Prancing around in fur hats?! Bubble baths with wigs?! If I haven’t convinced you yet, below is a teaser:

Oh, and PS. I am currently watching Pop Star on Ice, an hour and a half documentary on Johnny Weir, AND, I’m going to see him perform Bad Romance live this week. WIN-WIN.

2. Titus Andronicus recently released an epic second album, The Monitor, a cohesive collection of jangly, danceable punk songs with clever references and battle cries. I love battle cries, and the album makes me wish I was from Jersey. Furthermore, I have the attention span of a chipmunk. Despite this, I gleefully consume The Monitor (whose songs mostly exceed 5 minutes). They’re really nice guys who deserve all the album praise they’ve been getting (an unrelated fact that acknowledges I am biased). ANOTHER VIDEO:

3. While in NYC, I ate the most delicious cookie I had ever eaten. I’ve ingested many cookies, but all of them are now inferior to the magical Levain cookies. Various fortuitous events led to my introduction to Levain. My sister and brother in law saw Rocco DiSpirito mention his love for Levain on the Food Network + I was a block away from the bakery. The cookies are perfection: they are warm and gooey inside, but slightly crispy on the outside. It’s unfortunate that I don’t live in NYC, and cannot afford to have them FedEx’d to Chicago. This copycat recipe for the chocolate chocolate peanut butter chip cookies, however, is pretty good.

4. Have you ever eaten a sour patch kid, and thought, “self. I wish this was a vitamin.” I have trouble remembering to eat my vitamins, but not when I have One-A-Day VitaCraves Sour Gummies.

5. A couple of weeks ago, She & Him released Volume 2, a breezy follow-up to Volume 1. I have mostly positive feelings towards She & Him. Zooey always wears nice frocks, a fact that should have no influence on whether I like She & Him, but…it is a factor. Beyond the frocks, my greatest criticism regarding Volume 1 is Zooey’s chalkboard screeching voice pings. Example: the high notes in “Sentimental Heart.” Not cute Joanna Newsom screeches. Volume 2 is much stronger, and a great way to herald the arrival of Spring (sort of…it’s still cold in Chicago). I especially enjoy their cover of “Gonna Get Along Without You Now.”ALSO THERE IS THIS CUTE VIDEO, WHICH MAKES ME EXTRA EXCITED FOR MY FUTURE BALTIMORE BAND AND DANCE NUMBERS:

6. I’ve been watching a few excellent TV dramas, oddly all related to drug trafficking. Whereas watching The Wire is partly educational for my future move to Baltimore, Breaking Bad satisfies my curiosity regarding what it would be like if an accomplished science teacher cooked meth. This curiosity stems from college organic chemistry lab, where the teacher schooled us in lab technique, and our fate depended on purity and yield. Breaking Bad is amazingly engaging and well-written. It’s intriguing to witness the character progression of Walt, the science teacher who cooks meth (and has lung cancer…and has a son with cerebal paulsy…and he’s poor because he’s a middle school teacher). His thirst for power consumes his initial apprehension, and meth cooking grants him courage that he had never been bold enough to exercise prior to cooking meth.
