The pairing of actors Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif in their upcoming film, Ajab Prem ki Ghazab Kahani, has grabbed everyone’s heart. The music of the film, which was launched recently with fanfare across India, has also garnered a lot of praise and attention.
The soundtrack has a fresh and youthful feel to it and each track has something new to offer, which is evident from the number of artistes roped in. The album was penned by lyricists Irshad Kamil and Ashish Pandit.

“Ajab Prem...” includes the voices of KK, Sunidhi Chauhan, Hard Kaur, Atif Aslam, Mika, Alisha Chinoy, Neeraj Shreedhar, Suzzane D’Mello, Javed Ali, Jojo, Soham, Rana Mazumdar, Ashish Pandit, Kailash Kher, Paresh and Naresh.

The album starts with “Main Tera Dhadkan Teri..”, which has already become a chart-buster on music channels like MTV and Channel V. KK, Sunidhi Chauhan and Hard Kaur make it one of the best heard pieces in the album. There are a decent amount of remix tracks too, for parties and dance music lovers.

“Tu Jaane Na”, a romantic number, has Atif Aslam doing the vocals and Pritam composing some fabulous music. The next song, “Oh By God”, is fun to listen to with its wedding themed beats and vocals by Mika and Sunidhi Chauhan. “Tera Hone Laga Hoon”, has Atif Aslam's care free voice once again, this time teamed with Alisha Chinoy's soft vocals.

'"Prem Ki Naiyya” is definitely not one of the most recommended songs in the album. While it can be fun to listen to at sometimes, it can be equally jarring at others.

“Aa Jao Meri Tamanna” feels as if its melody has been taken from other songs.

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani makes for a good buy. Pritam fans will definitely not be disappointed and even those who aren’t very fond of Pritam will still enjoy the album to a decent bit.

Online credit recovery program will allow students redo failed classes

A new $1 million-plus initiative could help reduce Houston's dropout rate by at least 3 percentage points before this year's senior class graduates, Superintendent Terry Grier said.
As his first major initiative as Houston ISD chief, Grier is launching a credit-recovery program similar to ones he headed up in San Diego and Greensboro, N.C.
Houston ISD's new program will add so-called graduation coaches to each high school. Those teachers would oversee credit-recovery computer labs, where struggling students will spend part of their school day redoing classes they failed.
“This will transform education,” Grier said, adding that he expects the new software in these labs to eventually be used for advanced classes, summer school, SAT preparation and Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills tutoring.
Houston's high dropout rate — about 20 percent by some measures — is tops on the agenda for Grier, who took on the challenge of making sure more inner-city students earn their diplomas when he accepted the job as HISD superintendent in August.
His predecessor Abelardo Saavedra made strides with the issue by heading up a citywide walk to locate students who don't return to class each fall, hiring dropout recovery specialists and encouraging the creation of small, specialized high schools.
A districtwide online credit-recovery initiative will further the effort because it allows students to work at their own pace in a flexible, comfortable environment, Grier said. It should help those who have dropped out because of attendance issues or personal problems, he said.
Board member Diana Dávila said she's concerned that not all students will succeed in online classes. Children who aren't strong readers or who are not comfortable with technology, for instance, might have a tough time in the self-paced classes, she said.
Grier acknowledged the concerns, placing the burden on the new graduation coaches to identify students who may need extra help.
“This will help a lot of kids, but it will not help everyone,” he said. “It's like a giant jigsaw puzzle, and this is a major piece.”
Grier oversaw the launch of a similar program last year in the San Diego school district. In its first year, students recovered more than 4,500 credits — earning an average score of B in 81 days, he said.
The credit-recovery initiative, which is estimated to cost between $1 million and $2 million, should be operational by the end of December. A software company will be chosen after demonstrations are held next week, and hiring of 27 graduation coaches should also begin this month, officials said.
While many HISD campuses already offer some type of online credit-recovery program, this initiative streamlines the software and adds the graduation coach to support students' work, officials said.
“I've been asking for this stuff for five years. Hearing about it is great,” board member Manuel Rodríguez said.
Lamar High School Principal James McSwain said he's thrilled with the districtwide plan. About 150 students participate in online classes that Lamar offers after school and on Saturdays.
“This is a shift in thinking,” he said. “It's very much the right thing for us to do.”

Six Aligarh Muslim University students suspended

The Aligarh Muslim University has been closed indefinitely. Following the murder of a student, agitators went on a hunger strike demanding removal of the vice-chancellor.

Six students of the Aligarh Muslim University were suspended on Thursday for misconduct and indiscipline during last week's agitation on the campus following a student's murder.

Agitating students, however, had earlier dropped the demand to remove Vice-Chancellor PK Abdul Azis. Following the murder last month, a group of students sat on a hunger strike in the campus. They demanded the removal of the VC and other senior officials of the university.

Hundreds of students had taken to the streets, blocked rail traffic and demanded that the accused be handed over to them. They also accused the university authorities of siding with the district administration in the shoddy handling of the case.

Sensing trouble, the VC ordered the closure of the university indefinitely. This is the second time when Azis has ordered the closure of the university. Earlier, the institution was shut down when three students were murdered in separate incidents on the campus in 2007. Then, the students had turned violent and the official residence of the VC was torched.

This time, when the hunger strike on the campus yielded no results, the students under the banner of AMU Students' Struggle Committee shifted to Jantar Mantar in Delhi.

Referring to the murder of undergraduate biochemistry student, Shahnawaz, a press statement by AMUSSC read, "Shahnawaz had to go outside the campus because of a recent order by the VC to close down all canteens by 10 pm even though the library is open till 2 am. The AMU administration, therefore, cannot escape the moral responsibility of this tragic incident."

Irfan Khan, secretary of the AMUSSC, had earlier told Hardnews, "In the last 27 months, the VC is violating the principle of natural justice. Enquiries are pending against him on charges of plagiarism and unscrupulous use of university funds. Hence, he should be out of his office. But he is still holding office to influence the enquiry."

Incidentally, Khan is one of the six students suspended on Thursday. After the recent murder, students had held peaceful protests and there was no violence, claimed Khan. "Still, the VC had unleashed a "terror raj" and ordered the closure of the university," Khan said. The students also demanded the restoration of the students' union.

The AMU Teacher's Association has also condemned the closure of the university saying it will jeopardise the career prospects of the students. This is the fourth time that a student of the university has been murdered in the last 27 months.

The VC, however, had defended his decision. "It has sent a shockwave through me and every discerning soul that a handful of students could vitiate the atmosphere of an extremely pleasant and vibrant teaching and learning environment prevalent in the Aligarh Muslim University. It is a real tragedy that those who "finance and control them" from outside are coming out to support the 'satanic' forces who are bent upon fomenting unrest in the University," he had said in an appeal to students and guardians.

The recent incident happened on October 25, 2009. Shahnawaz, a final year non-resident BSc student, had gone for dinner to an eating joint close to the campus. An altercation reportedly broke out between him and unidentified persons over parking a motorbike. Soon after, he was shot dead.

The programme organized at Sri Krishna Memorial Hall of Patna was packed to the capacity with many watching the proceedings on screens setup outside the hall.

Digvijay Singh, MP and former Union Minister, lauded Jaswant Singh effort as very honest effort to clear doubts about partition. He appreciated Jaswant Singh, as one of very few who choose to write against the popular perception. He also pointed out that there is shortage of honest people but sycophants in abundance.
Teesta Setalvad, leading human right activist pointed out the partition has been reason for many riots in India after independence. She also criticized government for beating war drum beat. She said” Government instead of talking about peace and development is busy in warmongering with Pakistan, China and Naxals. This is an effort to divert attention of the people from real issues”

Arif Mohammad Khan, former union minister termed partition as human tragedy. He added that this partition not only resulted in division of land but it divided millions of hearts. He pointed out that Indian Muslims have been biggest sufferer of this partition. They are suffering in all three countries India, Pakistan and Bangladesh due to partition.
He also reminded people about importance of history by reciting Urdu couplet:
Jo qaum bhula deti apne twariq ko,
Us qaum ka geogrphia bhi baqi nahin rahta.

New Delhi, Nov 6 - Noted journalist Prabhash Joshi dies due to a massive heart attack on Thursday Night, 5th November 2009. He was 72 years old.

He was admitted to a private hospital after he complained of a chest pain he was facing last night at 11.30 pm and at the hospital the doctors declared him dead, family sources said.

Mr.Prabhash Josh's wife Usha Joshi, two sons Sandeep and Sopan, daughter Sonal and mother Leela Bai.

Prabhash Joshi, who began his career with Nayi Duniya, was the founder editor of leading Hindi daily "Jansatta" in 1983.

After retiring from the newspaper in 1995, Mr.Prabhash Joshi continued as the chief editorial advisor.

Mallika is presently in Los Angeles shooting for a film inspired by San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Devi Harris. Says a source, "She was waiting for the shooting of Hissss to end. After that, she was to start shooting for her new Hollywood film. Mallika wants to look the part and that's why she had her lips done, while she was in India. She was here for more than a month. In fact, she was supposed to leave more than two weeks ago but left for LA only last week."

Her brother Vikram Singh, refutes the charge, "What rubbish! Mallika is the same as ever before"

Students of Velammal school painting their way into the Record Books

Students of Velammal school display glass art work created by them in an
attempt to enter the Limca Book of Records for the most number of glass paint

Students of Class III to XII and teachers of Velammal Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Mogappair, Chennai took on the challenge after getting trained in glass painting by experts from Pidilite Industries Ltd for just two days and were able to make a record in the Limca Book of Records in the Glass art category, over 2,500 students and 120 teachers of Velammal Matriculation Higher Secondary School displayed their painting skills by finishing their individual art work in less than an hour on Wednesday (4/11/2009).

Principal of Velammal Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Stella Jebakumari said, “About 90 per cent of the students finished their glass painting in 45 minutes. Of the total 3,291 students in the school, 2,640 students took part in the challenge.” V V Murthy of the Limca Book of Records was present at the school throughout the attempt. A school official said it was the first time ever that over 2,500 students had done glass painting at the same time.

A similar record was set when 2,100 students from a school in North India simultaneously painted on paper.
