Please don’t blame yourselves. I have just had

three separate cases THIS MORNING…. Of children who all needed fillings because they

had holes in their teeth caused by constant immersion in milk.

Milk is wonderful in your children’s tummy…………. Provides lots of calcium.

BUT, NO MILK DURING THE NIGHT.

Toothbrushing Regime……. 1st thing in the morning as soon as they get up.

After breakfast, mouthwash (Listerine smart rinse is good)

Last thing at night preferably 1 hour after food or drink.

Then nothing to drink but water till the morning.

Dentist in West Sussex, always ready for a chat, please call us on 01342 321094

Ozone use in dentistry

A Touch of Tooth Fairy Dust:

Well, is dental tooth fairy dust which is also known as Ozone!!

Every time we do a filling, and we only do white fillings, we do not even have the old silver amalgam in the practice, when we finish preparing the tooth and before we fill it, we treat the tooth with ozone.

This has 3 effects:

1. Kills any remaining bacteria in the cavity so preventing any further decay.

2. Strengthens and hardens the dentine which is the material under the enamel, protecting the

blood and nerve supply to the tooth.

3. Decreases dramatically the incidences of pain after a filling which many people experience.

Its wonderful stuff – Tooth Fairy Dust.

Well its Ozone to us and good for you.

A Touch Of Magic.

Dentist in West Sussex, always ready for a chat, please call us on 01342 321094

The top 5 habits of people that keep their teeth for life

Good oral hygiene is terribly important not only for the health of the oral cavity but for your body as a whole. The connection between plaque and its associated bacteria with various diseases in now quite clear.

It is not difficult to keep teeth clean and by using a few well chosen items to help you the job can be done:

Take 10 minutes per day to clean your teeth (not all in one go though!)

Electric toothbrushes are a must, in most cases. Studies show that they remove plaque much more effectively than manual toothbrushes

Inter-dental cleaning (between the teeth) is essential in one form or another. If you cannot get your fingers around flossing, there are plenty of other tools to choose from. Plaque accumulates between the teeth very quickly and if not removed on a daily basis will start to cause problems.

Mouthwashes can be useful in some cases but you should take advice from your hygienist on this topic.

Visit the hygienist

Hygienists specialise in cleaning teeth and teaching you how to look after your mouth. They have more time to do this than the dentist who needs to spend time looking after the other aspects of your mouth.

You will receive information on which electric toothbrush to buy, how to use it and whether you need to use floss, Tepe brushes or toothpicks, and the use of mouthwashes, plus of course, a really good clean which will leave your mouth feeling great.

Dentist in West Sussex, always ready for a chat, please call us on 01342 321094

Looking after Children's Teeth

Looking after your children's teeth is a great way to ensure they keep their teeth for life and keep dental treatments to a minimum, so here are our top tips.

Just as important as visiting the dentist with your child to get them used to the atmosphere of the surgery is getting them into a good routine for cleaning their teeth.

Give your child a baby toothbrush to hold and put in their mouths as early as they can hold one. As a parent you should brush teeth as soon as they appear in the mouth.

Make this event fun and a game rather than a chore. Use a tiny amount of toothpaste such as “Milk Teeth” on the brush and get into this routine twice a day.

As your child gets older, it is a good idea for them to brush their own teeth in the morning and for you to brush then at night (teeth should be super clean before going to bed).

A visit to the dental hygienist who will teach you both how to brush is a great idea, where sugar intake and general dietary advice will also be discussed in detail.

Dentist in West Sussex, always ready for a chat, please call us on 01342 321094

What age should you take your children to the dentist

CALLING ALL MUMS AND DADS.

What age should your take your children to the dentist?

The answer is – As soon as possible after their birth.

Its never too early. Some babies are born with teeth and these must be removed as they are not properly formed and have no roots, therefore there is a danger of inhalation.

Bringing your children here to The St James Dental Practice in West Sussex is really important. We can build up a relationship with your children, make visiting the dentist fun and not a scary experience, get them used to the smells and atmosphere of the surgery and instill good habits in oral hygiene and diet.

We usually ask parents with children to visit our hygienist Lindsey as

young as possible. Lindsey can first educate and guide the parents in how to clean their children’s teeth with maximum effect for minimum effort and also, probably even more importantly discuss diet and the hidden hazards of sugar in foods.

The children will become members of our “Childrens Club” and receive membership booklets with fun activities and stickers.

Let’s instill great habits in diet and brushing in our children – that way, when they are teenagers, they will have radiant, beautiful, brilliant smiles.

Dentist in West Sussex, always ready for a chat, please call us on 01342 321094

Feeling lethargic? It could be your teeth causing it!

YOUR MOUTH IS THE PORTAL TO THE REST OF YOUR BODY!

If you are not cleaning your teeth and oral cavity completely, efficiently and effectively, you will get a build up of soft food material, plaque, which will be converted by the saliva into hard material, calculus.

When soft, plaque can still be easily removed with excellent oral hygiene and good manual dexterity. Once it is converted into calculus by the saliva with its high content of calcium and phosphate ions, it is impossible to remove with a brush – by that stage you need the help and dexterity and skills of the Hygienist.

You see plaque and calculus is just “BACTERIA”

If its in your mouth then it is going to spread to the rest of your body. This will result in a low grade infection throughout your body resulting in lethargy, low grade chronic illness and can lead to much more serious conditions, potentially life threatening.

One of the biggest causes of heart disease is poor oral hygiene. All those bugs travel round your body every time you swallow and eventually congregate on your heart valves or in the heat muscle leading to leaky valves and heart attacks.

And we all know the people who cover their mouths every time they smile or alternatively smile without sharing their teeth.

Help us at The St James Practice to give you back your beautiful smiles. Someone might not even have spoken to us before we have decided whether we like them, how professional they are, whether we trust them and so on. We make all these judgments in seconds and rarely change our minds!

We make quick decisions about people all the time and people are judging us all that time, in the supermarket, at the pub, at that important job interview, the list is endless.

Body language and speech are two key components to a first impression – get them wrong and your fate is sealed. So how does this relate to your teeth?

Imagine meeting somebody for the first time and they turn away from you whilst speaking to you. You can’t see their eyes, you can’t hear them clearly as they are not looking at you. You try to put them at their ease by making a joke and they give you a tiny awkward smile which doesn’t show their teeth. They look at bit nervous and mumble.

I know what I might think….. A bit rude? A bit distracted? Not very interested in me?

I probably wouldn’t be too impressed with this person.

Now think about it like this –

that person has poor oral health and bad breath so they don’t want to speak towards you for fear of you noticing they have discoloured teeth so are afraid to smile properly in case you are horrified, They are nervous and under confident because their teeth have gaps and this has taken away their self esteem

Now that I know this I feel sorry for this person because just a little dental work is all they need to change their life and the impressions they make completely.

If you have ever been conscious about your teeth what effect has it had on the first impression you make?

Do something about it today. Come and see us at the St James Practice and we will help you regain your confidence and make the best first impressions. Who knows where it might take you!

Catriona Neville

Practice Manager

The St James Practice

Tel: 01342 321094

www.stjamespractice.com

Dentist in West Sussex, always ready for a chat, please call us on 01342 321094

Exciting times, babies and new patients

Exciting times. On a personal level my daughter and our Practice Manager is expecting a baby in June so I have a magnetic attraction to all baby departments and am loving buying little tiny white outfits, teddy bears etc etc.

On the dentist front, we are very busy with lots and lots of new patients who have come due to all Mark Oborn’s work on our dental website, thank you Mark – I can highly recommend him, plus many patients have also come from personal recommendation from existing patients which is always a lovely way to get new patients.

We are doing more and more “all day sessions” with patients where we start at the beginning of the day and work through until we have finished all the work. We are of course able to do this thanks to Cerec which is our exciting and high tech way of making crowns while you wait in our dental practice in East Grinstead. What a godsend for operator and patient alike.

In this climate of uncertainty at work patients love having to take off one day rather than many days of shorter appointments. These sessions always begin with the hygienist so it is TOTAL CARE.

So until next time – with update on “THE BUMP”
Dentist in West Sussex, always ready for a chat, please call us on 01342 321094

What do a good book, a cup of coffee and going to the dentist have in common?

There has been a revolution in the world of crowns and inlays. No longer do you have to suffer your mouth full of that “gloopy” impression material or go away for 2 weeks with an uncomfortable temporary filling prior to the permanent restoration being fitted.

Now you can come into the dentist in East Grinstead, have your tooth preparation done and then the tooth to be fitted is scanned onto the computer in 3D with a small camera which is inserted into your mouth.

Then comes the good part. You get to sit in the waiting room with a good book and a cup of coffee while we design your restoration on the computer and create the finished product on our milling machine which is remotely connected to the computer.

We then disturb your coffee time to try the restoration in before returning to your book while we stain glaze the finished product and finish it in the kiln to produce a restoration which is as shiny as your own tooth and matches it perfectly, before fitting it and sending you home with a completed restored tooth which feels, looks and acts just like your own tooth did.

Now for the technical bit!!

Very conveniently this material has the same co-efficient of expansion as enamel and dentin which are what your tooth is made of. This means that it does not bend the cusps of the tooth when it gets hot and cold unlike the large composite (white) fillings. The blocks of porcelain are graded in shade to match the graduation of your tooth from the density of shade of dentine up to the bluish translucency of the cusps (pointy bits).

So you have a restoration that looks like, feels like and most importantly functions like your own teeth.

To find out more about this amazing technique called CEREC please call the practice now on 01342 321094
Dentist in West Sussex, always ready for a chat, please call us on 01342 321094

What is Ozone Therapy and How Can It Help You?

One of the most important aspects to note about the therapy is the breadth of its therapeutic usefulness. It is useful and valuable for so many different symptoms and health issues within dentistry.

There are many times when we can use its antioxidant stimulating capabilities, its anti-viral and anti-bacterial abilities to help with treatment of cavities in your mouth.
