Coercion

There is a word that has been haunting me lately… “coercion”. It’s such a nasty word. It just sounds wrong.

I found this definition of “coerce” – “The Intimidation of a victim to compel the individual to do something against his or her will by the use of psychological pressure, physical force, or threats.”

I love the smell of freshly popped corn. This was the smell I was counting on as an advertisement for the Oct. 8th Christ in Films, Discipleship Event. While working the popcorn machine, I dropped one of the individual little kernel’s on the floor. I picked it up right as the rest of the kernels began to explode and popcorn was pouring out of the pot. I looked at the kernel and then back to the popped kernels and it struck me. This is how the Scriptures are.

The images and stories coming out of Japan are amazing, and yet, so difficult at the same time. I recently heard on a news report that the earthquake last Friday hit the area with a force 1,000 times greater than the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima 66 years ago. The devastation of the island from the tsunami looks similar for sure.

Just a quick advent thought.

Tonight as my family and I arrived at St. John's Christmas Concert things were less than tranquil. We were late as usual and the stress level in the car was high. The roads were a mess, rain and snow was falling and the sidewalks were just beginning to get slick. I dropped my family off, circled around the building and found a spot on the street. Even the walk to the churches front door felt contested, as I trudged through a wet, muddy, slick mess.

Recently I was at a gym sweating it out on a treadmill. We have some great options in town and I love where I get to work out, wish I could be there every day. So, after running and rocking out with some tunes, I went to the watering hole and saw a post on the wall - look at the picture. As I read through "Purpose", I was struck by how the post used God in a way that gave me all of the control. Let me tell you what I mean...

2010 India Mission

1/18/10 Hello from the India team!
(Here is our "Top Five" List of what has been going on throughout our India trip!)

1. We have been lifted up on eagles wings with all of the flying that we've done. Our first flight was over 7,000 miles! Our second flight only lasted about 3 hours and boy were we tired! The third flight a number of things could have gone wrong but GOD WAS GOOD! We safely landed. Thank you for all the prayers, we have many more miles to go, but God had brought us safely through Nagercoil and and up to Kodaikanal.

Small Reminders

The morning was beautiful. After two days of rain and cold damp dreariness the sun was a welcome gift from God; which was quickly forgotten in the craziness of the morning. Emily was scheduled to work the last two nights at the hospital and this fact, along with my full schedule usually means a hectic, sometimes frantic pace to life.

Canceling Cable

Last fall I ordered cable at our new house so as to have access to all the college football I could handle. At the time it seemed like a great idea. I was able to watch my Oregon State Beavers come within one game of the Pac-10 title and the Rose Bowl from my own living room. I was there in front of my TV when they choked in the last game of the year to go from 1st to 3rd and a berth in some minor bowl. I had a party for the National Championship game and watched the Super Bowl in HD.

There have been some great discussions going on at St. John’s about this summer’s sermon series on the Gospel of Mark. Last week, one of these great discussions made me realize that the Gospel of Mark has a specific focus. After reflecting upon it I think this focus deserves some attention on our website, thus the title for this blog. “Cross Eyed”. I think this is a helpful way to highlight the focus of the Gospel.

An Awesome Blessing and Responsibility

I have been a father now for about 16 months. It's Crazy. Forgive me Lord for saying this, but I wonder if this was a good idea to give me this much responsibility. After all 16 month olds are like sponges. They mimic, copy and watch everything we do and its not always good. I am seeing the best parts of me and the worst parts of me acted out in this little person the Lord has blessed Emily and I with.

Spiritual Trail Running

Recently I was puttering along in NW Wisconsin enjoying some great trails, my son ahead of my on his mountain bike, my mind still focused on the trail but at the same time zoning out in the trees and POW! I hit a rut in the trail that I had not anticipated.
