She was admitted to SJH in 2008 when she was 10 months old. Tadi was born with respiratory problems but the problems were exacerbated by exposure to her environment. Her family was forced to flee their home in Khayelitsha to the city hall in Macassar as a result of the xenophobic attacks in 2008.

She developed a rare and life threatening form of lung disease in which small airways are compressed and narrowed by scar tissue or inflammation. As a baby, Tadi depended on oxygen to manage her condition and help her to breathe.

She receives regular physiotherapy as part of the treatment at SJH. This helps to remove excessive phlegm in her lungs and aids her breathing. This determined young lady no longer requires oxygen during the day, is gaining weight and reaching her age related milestones.

After attending our pre-school, Tadi started Grade R this year and is doing very well. She participated in her first sports day and astounded her therapists by winning all her races.

Her nickname in her ward is ‘Daily Voices’ as she is the self-appointed head girl of the ward and can give you a full report of what is happening and what has happened. Not only does she have natural leadership, she can speak three languages as well.

Many of us are in awe of her fighting spirit and know that she will continue to inspire those who meet her in her journey through life.

Esam is two years old and was admitted to St Josephs during July 2012 for rehabilitation and stimulation. She was diagnosed with Guillan Barre Syndrome by the doctors at Tygerberg Childrens Hospital. Guillan Barre Syndrome is a serious disorder that occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks part of the nervous system. This leads to nerve inflammation that causes muscle weakness. On arrival, Esam could move her head slightly and elevate her shoulders. She was not able to move her lower limbs which resulted in her not being able to stand or walk and needed support to sit.

Our Therapy team implemented a detailed programme of holistic therapy that focused on stimulation. This focused on building muscle strength and enhanced lower limb mobility. Esam is a special child in that she appears to be shy, but behind her sparkling smile lay a determined conviction to walk again. Her resolve paid off and she started walking in October, three months after arriving at St Josephs.

It is heart warming to watch Esam literally strut up and down the ward as she is so proud of her ability to walk again. Not only is she able to walk again, she is now able to eat by herself and do what other children her age can do. We are so proud of her.

Esam will be discharged in December and go home to her mother in Ceres. Our nursing and therapy team were instrumental in her recovery and this would not have been possible without them.

Rebecca gives new meaning to the term inspiration. She comes from Lusaka, Zambia and lives with her mother and two sisters. Rebecca had severe scarring on her face as a result of her falling into a fire when she was three years old. Her sister ran to fetch help, leaving Rebecca to pull herself out of the fire. In the process she also burnt her arms and hands.

An English Vicar, Mr. Rod Corke met Rebecca in Lusaka when she was 8 years old and returned to his church in the UK and started raising funds to help her. Jane and John Maclure joined the drive and contacted Dr. Adams, Plastic Surgeon at Red Cross Children’s Hospital. Dr. Adams confirmed that his team could assist, however Rebecca would have to undergo four operations and would be required to stay in South Africa for a year.

The requirement would be that the operations be paid for as Rebecca was not a South African citizen. As Rebecca’s benefactors, Jane and John firmly believed that she was part of God’s Plan and Rebecca was admitted to SJH in June 2012. Her mom and her younger sister stayed in our family accommodation for the first two weeks and then returned home.

She has undergone two operations so far and is one of the bravest girls you will meet. Her inner strength and beauty has touched everybody around her. And she is undergoing the operations without her mother by her side. She is learning to speak our languages and is in Grade 4 at St Josephs Primary School.

Rebecca wants to become nurse when she grows up and has a passion for shoes and bright colours. Rebecca is surrounded by people who love her and are working hard to raise funds for her future operations.

This affected his speech, mobility and general functioning and he was admitted to SJH for treatment on 23/01/2012.

On arrival, Faghry was completely dependent on staff for care, feeding and transportation in a wheelchair and was not able to communicate. The multi-disciplinary team worked very closely together and within the first two weeks of therapy, he started walking.

This amazing young man is loved by his family and this fuelled his inner determination to get better so that he could go home. As he gained his physical strength Faghry started to walk, run and play independently. His physical recovery slowly built his confidence to learn to communicate and to play with other children.

As a result of the brain injury, Faghry needed guidance with fine motor skills such as tying shoe laces, buttons and zips. As he gained these skills, his confidence grew and he started sharing his emotions, with laughter being a breakthrough for his therapists.

Faghry’s journey to healing is an amazing example of the true value of our holistic model of care. He was discharged into the care of his loving family after two months. Faghry continues to attend the St Joseph’s Primary School and receive rehabilitative care.

Although a life was changed forever in a split second, this young man has shown us how determination and strong will can overcome barriers set before you.
