Dividend Definitions

Last year, I posted an article about the political ETFs, which track the investments of politicians based on the reporting of their transactions, which politicians are legally required to provide.

I mentioned in that article that year-to-date, Democrats were far outperforming the Republicans.

At the end of the year, I posted a followup article which showed that Democrats were still outperforming.

Let’s take a look at how these stocks are doing this year.

DJT

First of all, there is the Trump Media & Technology Group (DJT), which is a media and technology company founded by former U.S. President Donald Trump in 2021. DJT was established with the goal of creating an alternative to mainstream media and tech platforms, which Trump and his supporters claim limit conservative voices. The company’s flagship project is Truth Social, a social media platform that aims to provide a space for free speech and minimal content moderation.

In addition to Truth Social, DJT has announced plans for other ventures, such as a subscription-based video-on-demand service called TMTG+, which would feature a mix of entertainment, news, and documentary content catering to a conservative audience. The company has faced both praise and controversy, navigating legal and regulatory challenges while securing funding and building partnerships to expand its media footprint. The company aims to position itself as a significant player in the conservative media landscape and a counterbalance to established tech giants.

In regards to the return on the stock, it is up over 201% so far this year, as of the time this article is being written. The company’s a market cap of $10 billion, is debt free, and is currently generating negative earnings.

Congressional Investors

The Democrats, based on the return of the Unusual Whales Subversive Democratic Trading ETF (NANC), is up over 25.8% so far this year. The ETF invests in companies that sitting Democratic members of United States Congress and/or their families also have reported to have invested in. The expense ratio is 0.75%.

As for the Republicans, Unusual Whales Subversive Republican Trading ETF (KRUZ), trailing far behind, up only 14.85%. It invests in stocks that sitting Republican members of United States Congress and/or their families also have reported to have invested in. The expense ratio is 0.75%.

Political Contributions

There is also the Political Contribution Comparison, which shows the returns of companies that make political contributions to Democratic versus Republican candidates and political action committees.

This analysis shows the following returns.

The Democratic Large Cap Core ETF (DEMZ) invests in large cap companies that make political contributions to Democratic Party candidates and political action committees above a certain threshold. Total return so far for the year is 22.1%.

The Point Bridge America First ETF (MAGA) has a goal of investing in companies that are highly supportive of Republican candidates. The return so for is just 16.8%.

Semi-Political EFTs

Also, there are the semi-political ETFs. These ETFs are somewhat different in that they leave the politicians out of the analysis, both as investors and political donees. These ETFs have very different returns.

The God Bless America ETF (YALL) is an ETF that screens out companies that support liberal political activism and social agendas. It was up an incredible 36.7% for the year.

The American Conservative Values ETF (ACVF) invests in stocks that meet its politically conservative criteria. The annual return was a positive 23.1%.

One ETF that is considered by many to be a “liberal” ETF is the SPDR MSCI ACWI Climate Paris Aligned ETF (NZAC). It is for “investors seeking to implement net-zero strategies and address climate change in a holistic way”. The ETF is up 17.8% year-to-date.

Libertarians

A Libertarian play is the Global X MSCI Argentina ETF (ARGT) due to the fact that Argentina now has a libertarian president. This fund is up about 45% this year, far outpacing the S&P 500, which is up 22.4%. ARGT has a market cap of $394 million, a price to earnings ratio of 20.45, and even pays a dividend with a yield of 1.12%. The expense ratio is 0.59%.

Finally, there is the Freedom 100 Emerging Markets ETF (FRDM)which seeks to invest in countries with higher personal and economic freedom scores. The ETF is up 8.32% this year.

Most of the above have extremely low market caps of less than $200 million, and wide bid and asked spreads, with limited liquidity.

The next couple weeks should be interesting, not just for politics and the election, but for the political ETFs. So now, not only do you have many choices of presidential candidates, you also have many political ETF choices.

Silvercorp Metals (SVM)

Silvercorp Metals Inc (NYSE AMEX: SVM) distinguishes itself from other silver miners by being the largest silver producer in China. The company operates multiple mines in the Ying Mining District, a historically significant silver-producing region. Silvercorp’s business model is built on high-margin operations, focusing on controlling costs while maintaining consistent production levels.

One key advantage for Silvercorp is its ability to generate profits even in a low silver price environment due to the by-product credits from its lead and zinc production, which helps offset operational costs. Silvercorp also has a solid balance sheet, making it an attractive option for investors looking for a relatively lower-risk play within the silver mining sector.

The stock has a $1.09 billion market cap, has a trailing price to earnings ratio of 18.5 and a forward P/E of 13.8. Earnings per share growth this year was up 76.5%, but expected to be flat next year. The company pays a dividend of 0.95%.

Warren Buffett, often referred to as the “Oracle of Omaha,” has long been regarded as one of the most successful and astute investors in modern history. As the chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-A) (BRK-B), Buffett has built a reputation for making strategic, long-term investments that have paid off handsomely. His investment philosophy revolves around purchasing undervalued companies with strong fundamentals and holding onto them for the long haul.

Each year, investors eagerly await Buffett’s moves, as his decisions have the potential to signal broader market trends. In a surprising turn of events earlier this year, Buffett made new additions to Berkshire Hathaway’s vast portfolio by purchasing shares in two companies—Ulta Beauty (ULTA) and HEICO Corporation (HEI) (HEI-A).

Ulta Beauty, a leading retailer of cosmetics, skincare products, and salon services, is a particularly interesting choice for Buffett. HEICO Corporation, on the other hand, represents a different sector altogether. The company has established a strong reputation for providing cost-effective and innovative solutions to the aerospace industry, an area of increasing importance given the ongoing global demand for air travel and advancements in space exploration.

HEICO’s unique position as a supplier to both commercial and military sectors makes it an appealing investment for long-term growth, particularly as governments and private companies alike invest in expanding their aerospace capabilities. For Berkshire Hathaway, HEICO fits the mold of a company with strong fundamentals and a clear path to future growth.

The stock has a trailing P/E of 76 and a forward P/E of 61, and pays a small dividend of 21 cents a share. This $36 billion market cap company sports earnings per share growth this year of over 25% with a growth rate next year of almost 17%. Sales growth jumped 43% year-ver-year. Return on equity is currently 14.8%.

Buffett’s investments in Ulta Beauty and HEICO Corporation are notable not just because of the companies themselves, but because they signal a broader strategy of diversification within Berkshire Hathaway’s portfolio. By investing in a beauty retailer and an aerospace company, Buffett appears to be hedging against risks in the broader economy, while also tapping into industries with significant growth potential. As always, Buffett’s moves have sparked considerable interest, with investors eager to see how these new additions will perform in the years to come. While only time will tell whether these investments will yield the same success as some of his previous picks, it’s clear that even at 93 years old, Warren Buffett remains as sharp as ever in identifying promising opportunities.

Did you know that there are eight different ways to trade Tesla (TSLA) using ETFs, and without using options?

That’s right. In addition to just buying and shorting the Tesla stock, there are other ways to speculate on the price of Tesla.

These ETFs are especially useful for those who do not want to trade options or are not eligible to trade options. These are also beneficial to traders who want to short TSLA in their IRA account (in which shorting is prohibited).

So what are the alternatives?

Here’s an overview of the Tesla ETFs, all of which track Tesla (TSLA) with varying leverage or inverse positions:

AXS TSLA Bear Daily ETF(TSLQ): This fund provides 2x inverse (-200%) exposure to Tesla’s daily performance. It is a short-term tool for sophisticated investors who want to profit from Tesla’s price decline. It carries a 1.15% expense ratio, and due to its high volatility (361.41% over 5 days), it’s intended for daily rebalancing(GraniteShares).
YieldMax TSLA Option Income Strategy ETF (TSLY): This ETF seeks to generate monthly income by selling covered call options on Tesla stock. It is an income-focused strategy rather than a leveraged or inverse play(ETFdb).
Direxion Daily TSLA Bull 2X ETF (TSLL): This fund offers 2x the daily performance of Tesla’s stock. Like other leveraged ETFs, it’s designed for short-term traders and rebalances daily. It carries a higher risk due to its leverage(ETFdb).

It looks like we may be at the beginning of a bear market. If you want to profit from falling markets stock prices, there are several ways to do so.

Many strategies are available to profit from a bear market and a stock market crash, some of which are speculative, and some that don’t have much risk. It doesn’t matter what your account size is, there are ways to protect yourself, and even profit on the downside. Here are some of those techniques.

1. Sell a Vertical Call Option Spread

This strategy is a little complicated, but I listed it first, because it is one of the least risky, since your losses are limited, unlike many of the other techniques listed here. In addition, I listed it at the beginning, because I use this trading technique all the time.

If you are familiar with options, then selling a vertical call spread is a great way to make money when a stock drops while protecting yourself if the stock goes up. (This happens to be my favorite strategy.)

This involves shorting an out of the money call option and buying a further out of the money call option at the same time. If the stock drops or stays the same, you make money from the short call which exceeds the loss on the long call. If the stock goes up to the strike price of the short call, you still make a profit. It is only when the stock rises above the strike price of the short call that you begin losing money.

To make it simple, here is an example:

Stock is at 50

Sell (short) one call with a strike price of 51 for 3 (an option that is trading at 3 means $300)

Buy one call with a strike price of 52 for 1 ($100)

If the stock drops to 45, the 51 call drops to $0 and you make $300 because you shorted it, and the 52 call drops to $0 losing $100 because you own or were long it, netting you a profit of $200.

If the stock rises from 50 to 100, you lose $4900 on the 51 call that you shorted, but you make $4800 on the one that you bought, so you only lose $100.

Generally, you want to use options that expire in 40 to 60 days, and close out your position in 15 to 25 days.

Disadvantages of the selling a vertical call spread

Your profit is limited
You need approval from your broker to do option spreads
Both legs of the spread need to be placed simultaneously (easy to do with most trading platforms)
May need to wait 25 or 30 days to see a profit

2. Shorting Stocks

This is one of the most speculative ways of making money in a bear market. In simple terms, you make money when the stock goes down and you lose money when the stock goes up. What technically happens is that you borrow the shares and immediately sell them (this all is done electronically through your brokerage firm) and since you owe those shares, you eventually have to buy them back at some price, hopefully a lower price, in order to return those shares. The difference between your sale price and eventual purchase price is your profit (or loss, if you buy back at a higher price).

Can you make a lot of money shorting stocks in a bear market? Yes. Is it speculative? Very. Can you lose a lot? Most definitely. This is why it is so risky. When you short a stock, the lowest point it can drop to is zero. Whereas, if the stock goes up, the amount it can rise is unlimited. Let’s say you short 100 shares of a stock at $20 a share. If you put up funds equal to 100% of the value of the shorted amount, and the stock drops to zero, you’ve made a 100% return. However, suppose the stock goes from 20 to 100, you end up losing 400% of your money with lots of margin calls along the way. This is called a short squeeze. But even on a short term basis, an investor can lose money very fast.

Unfortunately for those who do their trading in retirement accounts, such as IRAs, shorting stocks is not allowed.

So in summery, do I think you should short stocks? Absolutely not, unless you are a professional trader. The risk is almost infinite. If you understand options real well, hedged short selling might be OK (see the next strategy), as long as you are an advanced trader, and know what you’re doing.

3. Hedged Short Selling

Hedged short selling is a strategy whereby you short a stock and at the same time, you buy a close-to-the-money call option. That way, if the stock shoots up, you are protected with the call option. If the stock drops, you will lose what you paid for the option, but you will make money on your short stock position.

Example: you short 100 shares of a stock that is currently trading at 50 (so you short $5000 in stock), and you buy a call option with a strike price of 52 for 1 ($100).

The stock goes to 40. You make $1000 from the stock dropping from 50 to 40, and you lose the $100 you paid for the call option, with a net profit of $900.

The stock stays the same at 50. You don’t make any money on the short sale fo the stock and you lose $100 on the call option for a net loss of $100.

The stock goes up to 60. You lose $1000 on the short stock, but the value of the call option will increase from 1 to 10 ($100 to $1000), netting $900 on the difference, for an overall loss of $100.

In other words, in the example above, you can only lose $100, if the stock stays the same or goes up, but if the stock drops, the profit can be substantial.

Actually, to be more accurate, if the stock goes to 51 and stays there, you will lose $100 on the short stock sale and $100 on the call option, for a total maximum loss of $200. Even still, it may be worth the small loss in case you are wrong about a bear market.

Disadvantages of the hedged short selling

You need approval from your broker to short stock and buy options
Both positions should be placed simultaneously (easy to do with most trading platforms)

4. Short (Bearish) ETFs

The Exchange Traded Fund known as the Bearish ETF or Short ETF is another option. What these ETFs do is provide a return opposite to the return of the index, sector, or industry that it is tracking.

For example, the Short Dow30 ProShares (DOG) provides a return that is the inverse of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. If the Dow goes down 2%, the DOG is expected to up 2%. The Short QQQ ProShares (PSQ) ETF gives a return that is the inverse of the NASDAQ 100 Index.

The nice thing about these short ETFs is that your losses are limited. Also, if you are long individual stocks that you don’t want to sell, these can be good for protecting your overall portfolio on the downside.

5. Leveraged Bearish ETFs

If you like volatility, you will love the leveraged bearish ETFs. What these ETFs do is provide double, and in some cases triple the inverse return of indices.Some examples include the UltraShort Consumer Services ProShares (SCC) and the ProShares UltraShort S&P S&P 500 (SDS).

In addition there are several triple leveraged bearish ETFs. Direxion Daily MCSI Real Estate Bear 3X Shares (DRV), Direxion Daily Energy Bear 2X Shares (ERY), and ProShares UltraPro Short Russell 2000 (SRTY) are just a few of the many leveraged bearish ETFs.

The volatility of these ETFs is substantial, and so are the wide bid and asked spreads that I’ve seen occasionally.

The advantage of these trading vehicles is that they are a way of shorting on margin, with a limit on the downside. The disadvantage is that the losses can be quick and large, especially with the triple leverage short ETFs.

6. Bear Funds

It may be hard to believe, but there are actually a large number of bearish mutual funds for the long term bearish investors. These include the Grizzly Short Fund (GRZZX), the PIMCO StocksPlus TR Short Strategy Institutional Fund (PSTIX), and the ProFunds Bear Investors Fund (BRPIX). These funds have minimum investments ranging from $1,000 to $5,000,000.

7. Puts

First, a little about option pricing. Puts and calls are priced on a per share basis, so a put at $1 would cost $100 for a 100 share option, or a call at $3.50 would cost $350.

A put is the option to put your stock to someone at a particular price within a certain period of time. In other words, if you own a stock that is trading at 22 and you buy a put at a dollar which gives you the right to put your stock to someone at $20 per share within three months, there are a couple of things that could happen. The stock could tank to $14 a share and you could put your stock at 20, or just resell the put for 6 (the difference between 14 and 20) and collecting the profit. You would be far better off than just doing nothing. And if the stock goes up or stays about the same, you are just out your $100 for the option. Puts can be useful for experienced traders.

8. Cash

There is another way to make money in a bear market. Sell everything, and keep your money in cash, with the safest way being a T-bill money market fund, that only owns T-bills. (Money market funds that invest in repos are supposed to be just as safe, but I consider them slightly more risky than T-bills.) The advantages are that you can’t lose money and you can receive an income from the investment.

The alternative cash investment is putting your money in a bank certificate of deposit or savings account. Your money is safe up to the FDIC limits, but the interest rate will be very low.

9. Anti ETFs (Bearish ETF of Popular Bullish ETFs)

The Anti-ETF is a new investment vehicle that has cropped up recently. The goal of these ETFs is to provide the reverse return of another popular actively managed exchange traded fund, as opposed to the bearish ETF which attempt to track the inverse of an index, like the ProShares Short S&P500 ETF (SH).

The most popular is the Tuttle Capital Short Innovation ETF (SARK), which has a goal of achieving the inverse of the return of the popular ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK) managed by Cathie Wood.

10. Anti Stocks (Bearish Single Stock ETFs)

Maybe there is a stock you want to short, but you don’t qualify for an account that allows shorting. Or maybe you want to short a stock in a retirement plan, such as an IRA. If you want to short a particular stock, such as Tesla, Nvidia, Paypal, Pfizer, or Nike (the AXS 2X NKE Bull Daily ETF (NKEL) would have been a good one today as it was down 12% today 9/30/22), there are ETFs which have a goal of returning the opposite return of a particular stock.

11. Series I Bonds

If you think the bear market will last for a year or more, Series I bonds are the way to go. These bonds never drop in value and currently pay 9.62%. Plus, they are backed by the U.S. Government. For more information on these bonds, check out the article Series I Bonds Now Paying over 9%.

12. Selling Calls Against the Stocks You Want to Hold

You may have stocks in your portfolio that you want to keep fr one reason or another, such as not wanted to take a huge capital gain. In that case, you might want to consider writing calls against those stocks.

As you can see , you have plenty of options (no pun intended) for making money and preserving your capital in a bear market. There are obviously additional risks involved with shorting stock and options, which you need to delve into with your broker before utilizing those strategies. If we are in a bear market, hopefully you can protect your portfolio and make some money on the downside.

It is amazing that there are still debt free stocks with lots of cash and trade for less than $10 per share. The following are five of these low priced stocks with lots of cash per share, and no or very low debt. Most of them have very low cap stocks and should be considered very speculative.

Green Dot Corporation (GDOT) is a financial technology company headquartered in Austin, Texas, with a mission to transform how people manage their money. Founded in 1999, they’ve grown into a leader in the prepaid debit card market, holding the world’s largest market share by capitalization. However, their reach extends beyond prepaid cards. Green Dot also functions as a payment platform company, powering solutions for well-known brands like Apple Cash, Uber, and Intuit.

Green Dot initially targeted teenagers with their prepaid debit cards, offering a way to shop online safely. They quickly pivoted in 2001 to focus on the “unbanked” and “underbanked” communities, providing essential financial services to those who might not have access to traditional banking options. This focus on financial inclusion has remained a core part of their mission.

Green Dot operates as a “branchless bank,” relying on a network of over 90,000 retail locations across the country for distribution. They’ve also established Green Dot Bank, a subsidiary that’s FDIC-insured, ensuring customer deposits are protected. Green Dot’s proprietary technology allows for fast and efficient electronic payments and money management,providing users with secure and intuitive tools to spend, send, save, and control their finances.

Green Dot trades at an incredibly low 43% of cash per share, and it has no long term debt.

The stock trades at 5.4 time forward earnings, and has an extremely favorable price to sales ratio of 0.33. It also sells at 58% of book value.

Long term annual growth estimate of earnings per share over the next five years is 12.9%.

Aeva Technologies, Inc. (AEVA) is a company on the cutting edge of LiDAR technology, a system used in self-driving cars, robotics, and consumer electronics. Their journey began in December of 2016 when Soroush Salehian and Mina Rezk,with experience from Apple and Nikon, founded the company.

In 2017, after securing $3.5 million in funding, Aeva emerged from stealth mode and quickly gained momentum. They secured $45 million in Series A funding from Lux Capital and Canaan Partners, followed by additional investment from strategic partners like Porsche SE and Lockheed Martin.

A significant milestone came in 2021 when Aeva went public through a merger with InterPrivate Acquisition Corp. This merger raised over $560 million and allowed Aeva to begin trading on the NYSE under the ticker symbol AEVA.

Since going public, Aeva has continued to achieve important milestones. They partnered with Fabrinet to manufacture their CoreVision “LiDAR-on-Chip” modules and secured Nikon as their first industrial metrology customer. Notably,Aeva collaborated with TuSimple on the industry’s first fully autonomous drive using their sensor technology.

Their achievements extend beyond the automotive industry. Aeva became the first 4D LiDAR company compatible with Nvidia Drive, a key platform for autonomous vehicles. Additionally, their technology impressed NASA, who contracted Aeva to develop solutions for lunar exploration missions. Most recently, Aeva partnered with SICK AG to provide their 4D LiDAR technology for industrial automation equipment.

Aeva has a price to cash ratio of 0.93. That means that the price of the stock is less than the amount of cash the company has per share. In addition, the company has almost no debt.

The stock is trading at 83% of book value. Unfortunately, the company is generating negative earnings. Sales growth year over year is up over 25%.

Atea Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (AVIR) is a biopharmaceutical company dedicated to developing innovative antiviral treatments. Their focus lies on creating oral therapies to address serious viral infections and improve patient outcomes.

The company leverages its expertise in antiviral drug development, nucleos(t)ide chemistry, and virology to discover and advance novel drug candidates. These candidates target single-stranded ribonucleic acid (ssRNA) viruses, a common cause of severe viral diseases. Currently, their pipeline prioritizes treatments for SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19, and Hepatitis C Virus (HCV).

Atea operates at the clinical stage, which means their drug candidates are undergoing clinical trials to assess their safety and efficacy. Their commitment to efficient and scalable manufacturing ensures potential stockpiling of their medications for future outbreaks.

Beyond just scientific expertise, Atea fosters a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion within their workforce. They believe this approach fosters innovation and allows employees to contribute their unique perspectives for the benefit of the company and future patients.

Atea trades at only 57% of its cash per share, and is totally debt free. That means that if the company stopped operating today, and all the company’s non-cash assets were totally worthless, investors would almost double their money just from the cash.

However, since this is a biotech company, the burn rate can be high. The burn rate is, in simple terms, the amount of cash the company is spending of its cash on an ongoing basis.

The stock trades at 58% of book value. The company generates negative earnings and hasn’t yet generated sales.

American Well Corporation (AMWL), known simply as Amwell, is a frontrunner in the telehealth industry. They focus on creating digital healthcare solutions that make medical care more accessible and convenient.

Founded in 2006, Amwell offers a comprehensive platform called Amwell Converge. This platform equips healthcare systems, health plans, government agencies, and even universities with the tools they need to provide efficient virtual care. Amwell Converge facilitates a variety of healthcare interactions, including both on-demand and scheduled consultations, ranging from primary and urgent care to specialty consultations like telestroke and telepsychiatry.

Amwell operates across the United States, partnering with over 240 health systems and 55 health plans, collectively reaching over 80 million covered lives. Their reach extends beyond basic consultations as well. Amwell offers Amwell Medical Group, a subscription-based service that connects patients with a network of licensed physicians for ongoing care needs.

Looking beyond the platform itself, Amwell prioritizes partnerships. They collaborate with a wide range of healthcare providers, payers, and innovators to create a comprehensive care ecosystem that seamlessly blends in-person, virtual, and even automated care options. This patient-centered approach aims to improve healthcare outcomes and make quality care more accessible to everyone.

The stock, which has very low debt, sells at 45% of cash, 34% of book value, and has a price sales ratio of 0.55. The company has been generating negative earnings.

ContextLogic Inc. (WISH), better known by its shopping platform Wish, is an e-commerce company that thrives on mobile technology. Established in 2010, they’ve carved a niche for themselves in the online shopping world, particularly in Europe and North America, with a presence in South America and other regions as well.

Wish’s core function is to connect consumers with a vast network of merchants. They utilize a user-friendly mobile app to showcase a wide array of products, often at competitive prices. Their personalized product recommendations and gamified shopping experience have become hallmarks of the Wish platform.

ContextLogic Inc. doesn’t just connect buyers and sellers; they also provide valuable services to their merchants. The company offers marketplace and logistics support, streamlining the process for businesses to reach new customers and efficiently deliver their products. This focus on both sides of the e-commerce equation has been instrumental in Wish’s growth and success.

Headquartered in San Francisco, California, ContextLogic Inc. continues to innovate and expand its reach, making online shopping more accessible and convenient for millions of users worldwide.

The stock has a price to cash ratio of 0.41, a price to book ratio of 0.76, and a price sales ratio of 0.57. The company has been generating negative earnings.

Ozempic was originally approved for type 2 diabetes, but its weight loss side effects have driven its use in that area as well. Wegovy, on the other hand, is specifically FDA-approved for chronic weight management.

The high cost and limited insurance coverage are barriers for many. Additionally, long-term side effects of these medications are still being studied.

While these injectable drugs offer a promising new tool for weight management, they are not a magic bullet. They are most effective when used in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise program.

Novo Nordisk (NVO) is a global healthcare company headquartered near Copenhagen, Denmark, with a rich history dating back to 1923. Their founding story is intertwined with the discovery of insulin, a revolutionary treatment for diabetes.

The company’s mission is “to drive change to defeat serious chronic diseases,” and they have become a leader in the diabetes care space. They develop and manufacture a wide range of diabetes medications, including injectable insulins and GLP-1 receptor agonists like the popular Ozempic and Wegovy mentioned earlier.

Beyond diabetes, Novo Nordisk is expanding its reach into other chronic diseases. They offer treatments for obesity, such as Wegovy, and medications for hemophilia and other rare blood disorders. Their research and development efforts continue to push boundaries in these areas.

Eli Lilly and Company (LLY), headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, boasts a rich heritage dating back to 1876. Founded by Colonel Eli Lilly with a vision to “take what you find here and make it better and better,” the company has established itself as a major player in the pharmaceutical industry.

Eli Lilly is dedicated to turning science into solutions for a healthier world. Their core focus lies in research and development, with a significant portion of their workforce dedicated to this pursuit. They leverage advancements in biotechnology, chemistry, and genetic medicine to tackle some of the world’s most pressing health challenges.

The company’s product portfolio is extensive, encompassing medications for a wide range of conditions. Here’s a glimpse into their key areas:

The company pays dividends quarterly and yields 0.67%.

WW International, Inc., formerly known as Weight Watchers International, is a global company headquartered in New York City. Founded in 1963 by Jean Nidetch, WW has a long history of helping people achieve weight loss and wellness goals.

Shifting Focus: Beyond Weight Loss

Traditionally, WW was known for its weight loss programs, often centered around group meetings and a points-based system for tracking food intake. However, in 2018, the company underwent a significant rebranding, reflecting a shift towards a more holistic approach to health and wellness.

This move is reflected in their new name, WW, which purposely avoids mentioning weight. Their current programs encompass aspects like fitness, mindset, and overall healthy habits, not just weight loss on the scale.

Summary

Novo and Lilly have already had major gains in their stock price. It remains to be seen it this growth will continue, especially with greater acceptance of their drugs.

Fake Dirty Underwear: Why You Need to Buy Some

Recently, I posted an article about investing in silver and silver coins. But if you buy silver, or gold, coins, where do you hide them?

One popular location is a bank’s safe deposit box. But the disadvantages are that you can’t get access to the coins at all times, and if on the very rare occasion that the safe box is broken into, the bank isn’t responsible for the loss of contents.So suppose you want to keep them at home. Unfortunately, burglars know all the common places.

These include your top dresser drawers, drawers in your nightstands, backs of closets, cookie jars, under your mattress, in the toilet tank, and other areas that are convenient for you but also the burglars.

Some sources suggest leaving the burglars a ‘tip’ which would be a small amount of cash that’s easy to find so that the burglars find it and leave without spending too much time in your house.

One source even recommends leaving a twenty dollar bill on a little table just inside your front door, because if the bad guys don’t find any money, they may retaliate by causing destruction in your house. This is especially true for teenage intruders.

Here is a suggestion. Get any old coins that you have in your house that aren’t worth much or even not worth anything above face vale, but just appear to be old. Put them in a container with a label on it that says ‘coin collection’ and keep it in your dresser. Keep your real coin collection in a much more secure location.

Let me tell you where you never should hide any items. Never, ever store valuables at the bottom of a wastebasket. The burglars may never look there, but it is almost certain that at some point, either you or a family member or a friend will accidentally throw out the valuables with the garbage. I personally had a close call with this type of hiding place.

So what does all this have to do with dirty underwear? There is a product that burglars wouldn’t even want to get close to, where you can hide cash, jewelry, or other valuables.

The product is called the Brief Safe Hidden Contents Travel Passport Wallet. A description of what it is in simple terms would be a pair of men’s underwear with a smear of coloring on it that looks like an accident took place in them. Inside is a stealth area where valuable items can be hidden.

First, you choose the type of coin. (Note: If you are checking a silver dollar, for Keyword, just type Dollar, not Silver Dollar.) You place the coin on your fingertip, tap Check on the app, then hit the coin a few times with something that won’t damage the coin (I use the wooden part of a pencil.) If is shows a 0 or 1 out of 3, it means the coin is a fake. If it shows a 2 or a 3 out of three, the coin is real.

Just remember that all tests for coins aren’t foolproof. The best approach is to buy from a very reputable coin dealer.

Taylor Swift is not only beautiful and a great singer, songwriter, and actress, but she is also very intelligent, especially in the area of finance.

Did you know that she almost became a celebrity spokesperson for FTX, the cryptocurrency company that was involved in a scandal that involved the arrest of the founder for fraud charges.

Taylor Swift was reportedly offered a $100 million sponsorship deal with the FTX cryptocurrency exchange. However, she ultimately declined the deal after asking FTX representatives a simple question: “Can you tell me that these are not unregistered securities?”

This question was significant because it raised the issue of whether FTX was selling unregistered securities. Unregistered securities are a type of investment that is not registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission. This means that investors in unregistered securities do not have the same level of protection as investors in registered securities.

Swift’s question about unregistered securities appears to have been a dealbreaker for FTX.

In addition to asking about unregistered securities, Swift reportedly also did her own research on FTX before deciding to decline the sponsorship deal. She reportedly read the company’s white paper and spoke to other celebrities who had been involved with FTX.

Unfortunately for those other celebrities, which included Tom Brady, Gisele Bündchen, Steph Curry, Naomi Osaka, David Ortiz, Shaquille O’Neal, Kevin O’Leary, and Larry David, they got caught up in the scandal.

In December 2022, a class-action lawsuit was filed against FTX and its celebrity endorsers. The lawsuit alleges that the celebrities engaged in deceptive practices to sell FTX yield-bearing digital currency accounts.

Taylor Swift, as a prominent figure in the entertainment industry, has been sought after by various brands for celebrity endorsements. Three notable endorsements in her career include Coca-Cola’s (KO) Diet Coke, Apple (AAPL), and Coty (COTY).

Should You Invest In Convertible Bonds?

A convertible bond (often referred to as a convertible note or a convertible debenture) is a type of corporate bond that gives the bondholder the option to convert the bond into a predetermined number of the issuing company’s common stock or other securities, typically at a predetermined conversion price. In simpler terms, it is a bond that can be converted into shares of stock.

Do not confuse convertible bonds with convertible preferred stocks, which are a completely different type of security, and the subject of another article.

Here’s how a convertible bond works:

Issuance: The company issues the convertible bond to investors, typically at a fixed interest rate and with a maturity date.
Bondholder receives interest payments: Similar to regular bonds, the bondholder receives periodic interest payments (coupon payments) based on the bond’s face value and the fixed interest rate.
Conversion option: The bondholder has the right, but not the obligation, to convert the bond into a specified number of shares of the issuing company’s stock. The conversion price is the predetermined price at which the bond can be converted into stock.
Stock price appreciation: If the company’s stock price rises above the conversion price, the bondholder can convert the bond into stock and potentially benefit from the stock’s price appreciation.

Tesla (TSLA) issued 2.00% Convertible Senior Notes due May 15, 2024. The bonds, which were issued in 2019, had an Initial Conversion Price of approximately $309.83 per share of Common Stock and an Initial Conversion Rate of 3.2276 shares of Common Stock per $1,000 principal amount of Notes.

Since that time, Tesla had a three-for-one stock split in 2022, so based on the prospectus, it appears that the conversion rate would be adjusted.

It is very difficult to find these bonds or even get a price.

The utility Southern Company (SO) issued its Series 2023A 3.875% Convertible Senior Notes due December 15, 2025.

Interest on the Convertible Notes will be paid semiannually at a rate of 3.875% per annum. The Convertible Notes will have an initial conversion rate of 11.8818 shares of Southern Company’s common stock per $1,000 principal amount of the Convertible Notes

PPL Capital Funding, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of PPL Corporation (PPL), issued 2.875% Exchangeable Senior Notes due 2028.

The notes will be senior, unsecured obligations of PPL Capital Funding and will be fully and unconditionally guaranteed on a senior, unsecured basis by PPL Corporation. The notes will bear interest at a rate of 2.875% per year, payable semi-annually in arrears on March 15 and September 15 of each year, beginning on September 15, 2023. The notes will mature on March 15, 2028, unless earlier exchanged, redeemed or repurchased.

The notes will be exchangeable at an initial exchange rate of 29.3432 shares of PPL Corporation’s common stock per $1,000 principal amount of notes.

General Motors (GM) issued a mini-convertible bond at $25 par value. The General Motors, 5.25% Series B Convertible Senior Debentures due 3/5/2032 have a conversion rate of 0.3852. It appears that the bonds were formally exchange listed but have since been delisted, and from what I can tell, it appears that the bond interest payments have been suspended.

If you are considering converting a portion of your portfolio to convertibles, beware of the risks, and lack of liquidity.

You’ve seen it on TV, you’ve read about it on news websites. Artificial Intelligence, commonly referred to as AI, is now the hottest industry. Stocks that are involved in this industry are taking off.

I originally wrote about a form of artificial intelligence back in October of 2021 in an article called The Future of Artificial Intelligence: Can You Invest In It Now?

So you may be wondering what companies are the purest plays.

WHAT AI IS

Artificial Intelligence, or AI for short, refers to the ability of machines to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as learning, reasoning, problem solving, and decision-making. AI algorithms are designed to analyze data, recognize patterns, and make predictions or recommendations based on that analysis.

In other words, AI is a way to teach machines to perform tasks that would normally require human intelligence, and to improve their performance over time based on the data they analyze. This technology has the potential to revolutionize many aspects of our lives, from healthcare to transportation to entertainment. AI is even being used to write articles and books.

WHAT CHAT AI IS

One of the most popular types of AI services is Chat AI.

Now let’s get to the purer plays in artificial intelligence.

C3.AI

The Unusual Whales Subversive Democratic Trading ETF (NANC) invests in companies that sitting Democratic members of United States Congress and/or their families also have reported to have invested in. The expense ratio is 0.75%.

The God Bless America ETF (YALL) is an ETF that screens out companies that support liberal political activism and social agendas. Year-to-date total return is 26.04% and the expense ratio is 0.65%.

The Point Bridge America First ETF (MAGA) has a goal of investing in companies that are highly supportive of Republican candidates. Year-to-date total return is 1.93% and the expense ratio is 0.72%. It pays a yield of 1.42%.

The American Conservative Values ETF (ACVF) invests in stocks that meet its politically conservative criteria. Year-to-date total return is 14.45% and the expense ratio is 0.75%. It pays a yield of 0.92%.

The 2ndVote Life Neutral Plus ETF (LYFE) invests in stocks that meet its pro-life social criteria.

The 2ndVote Society Defended ETF (EGIS) invests in stocks that meet its 2nd Amendment and border security social criteria.

So now, not only do you have many choices of presidential candidates, you also have many political ETF choices.
