Nynäshamn is a coastal town 58 kilometers south of Stockholm. On top of a hill in the town center there used to be a lighthouse. In 1930 they instead erected Nynäshamn Church by architect Lars Israel Wahlman.

During the installation Djurgårdsljus, the Kaknästornet tower also wore different colours, changing all the time. In front of the tower lies Sjöfartsmuseum, the Maritime museum.

Once upon the time there was such a thing as snail mail. This is the magnificent entrance of the building where Swedish Posten had its head office until 2003. The architect was Ferdinand Boberg.

nocturne for Kista Science Tower

If you rank all countries by population density, Sweden will be found at place 194. In other words, we've got plenty of space. So, with its 33 floors and 117 meters Kista Science Tower may not be much of a skyscraper by international standards but it is in fact Sweden's second tallest building.

the old school

This impressive building - Tomtebodaskolan - used to house a school for visually impaired children. Opened in 1888 it had room for 100 pupils, 50 boys and 50 girls. The students received reading training and vocational education. The school was eventually closed in 1986. Since 2005 it's the home of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), an EU agency aimed at strengthening Europe's defences against infectious diseases.

ordinary but truly special

Every day I walk past this house at the corner of Sveavägen and Kungsgatan. It is a truly ordinary house but if you study it closer there are some special tiles all over the facade.

Each tile depict scenes from ordinary daily life; a woman with a stroller, a man painting, a door man, a couple snogging, a pretty woman with a handful of balloons and so on. And they all blend in perfectly and are hardly noticeable, but now that you know of these small sculpture like pictures it is what makes this truly ordinary building truly special.

Täby Centrum is one of the largest shopping centres in Sweden. It has an area of 50.000 sq m where you will find more than 160 shops. If you go there late on a Sunday - say around 5 PM - there are just a few shoppers left. And you have the escalators and stairs almost to yourself.

school's out ?

A while ago we had Norra Latin and it's just fair that we now show you Södra Latin as well. Both were well known schools in Stockholm. Quite a difference in the façade, I'd say. The present building was inaugurated in 1891 but the school has existed in different shapes since 1654. Girls weren't allowed in until 1961.

bloody façade

House on Stortorget, Old town. According to folklore, the number of white stones on the façade of this house equals the the number of people executed in the The Stockholm Bloodbath in November 1520.

Wikipedia: "The Stockholm Bloodbath took place as the result of a successful invasion of Sweden by Danish forces under the command of king Christian II. It culminated on the 8th when around 80-90 people, mostly nobility and clergy, were executed despite a promise by Christian for general amnesty."

In Sweden, king Christian II is nicknamed 'Christian the Tyrant'. In Denmark he is called 'Christian the Good'. How's that for two peace-loving countries in Scandinavia?

Kista Science Tower revisited

Revisiting the 32-storey show-off in the high tech village Kista north of Stockholm city. Kista Science Tower is a conference and office complex of six buildings offering some 39,000 square metres of floor area. All buildings are triangular shaped. The tallest building - the tower - is the highest office building in the Nordic countries (156 metres) with the fastest lifts in Sweden (5-6 metres/second).

High-rise buildings are few and far between around Stockholm. Here's one in an odd location. The hotel in Infra City is located 20 km north of the city center. It has 320 rooms and a splendid view overlooking a boring motorway.

Swedish riksdag

A wooden model of our Parliament (riksdag). The two main buildings are located on the small oval island Helgeandsholmen. Separated by Riksgatan (Kingdom street), the lower square building was originally the bi-chamber assembly and the upper rounded used to be the Riksbank (Swedish National Bank). That building now holds the unicameral assembly hall. The large square on the left is the Royal Palace where the king works.

A food court is an establishment where several restaurants share the same premises. The new one in Vällingby is called Vällingehus. The interior is surprisingly shabby already. The food is OK. The reflected sky is delightful.
