This blog - stockholm by waves - is closed. It was an experiment from the outset and the blog only managed to capture the interest of a few listeners. As Blogger didn't support sound, I chose to combine it with an underlying dedicated service for hosting the sounds. This service, Odeo, turned out to be unreliable and we're now left with a sound blog where the embedded sounds cannot be replayed!

I still believe that brief clips of the local sound scape is a great way to share the experience of a particular city. One day the time may come to revisit this format. Until then, thanks for your interest in stockholm by waves. What's left of the blog will remain online for a while and your feedback would be appreciated.

elevator in pain

This is a painful mechanical mishap.

Something's very wrong with this elevator door which tries again and again to close and then changes its mind to open once more. It all takes place at T-centralen subway station and becomes almost surreal when a voice in the background warns "mind the doors closing" (referring to a train of course) while this door or ours clearly can't quite make it.

Ever since 1970, Apoteket is a state-run pharmaceuticals retail monopoly. Qualified pharmacists offer good advice as well as dispensing the medication. These are real pro's! In my opinion, Apoteket is an example of a well functioning monopoly.

Out of these nozzles can come either a small gust of water, barely viewable during daytime.

Or a mighty pillar of water (yes, even during wintertime)

But like this is most enjoyable. High enough to be seen and yet not splashy enough to make you all wet while looking at them. All the different noises come from the opening and closing of the lids and the splashing water.

You might recognize these, but probably not. These are the nozzles from where the fountain at Stockholm International Fairs blows water and steam. In the soundclip you can hear the hizzing sounds of air and steam along with the slamming of the lids. They are actually composed and if you spend a while there you will get to hear the different sounds they make. This is just a short sample.

The fountain generally has a low program going and during day you could easily miss it completely. It's during dark evenings it comes alive, with the lights changing all the time and the looks of the fountain changing also. On special occasions, as the opening of bigger fairs like the annual boat show "Allt för sjön", there's a gala-program and the last pic is from one of those magic evenings.

This is something to really look out for and gets me going everytime. I have spent hours there and I guess I'm going to visit a few more times... More pics of the fountain here...

Sound clips from Stockholm don't exactly grow on trees, at least not in any convenient format for the occasional one-minute-tourist, so I was pleased to find the listen hear sound projects - audio diary with a couple of episodes from Stockholm. Take a moment to enjoy a boat trip with M/S Carl Philip and some noisy, local seagulls!

Stockholm has more than its fair share of fast food establishments. Whether your meal is actually happy might be subject to debate. It's probably cheap, pretty fast and reasonably healthy if you stay away from the fries and the soft drink. But it's not exactly quiet and peaceful. Just listen to this.

Swedish listeners using the ISP TeliaSonera might not be able to access our sounds (from odeo.com) on waves. You can read more here. We expect this to be fixed swiftly, meanwhile there's not a lot we can do except regret the inconvenience and suggest you visit pixels or plenty instead!

I thought it would be a sneak preview of things to come. Some artificial winter before the real one sets in, I told myself in December while visiting the ice oval in the King's Garden (Kungsträdgården). I was dead wrong. The real winter had a change of plans and traveled elsewhere this year so we'd better cherish what memories we have of snowflakes, slippery roads and - of course - ice skating in the city. The student's union at the Royal Institute of Technology are very much associated with creating and distributing a periodical, Blandaren ("the mixer"). Any frequent traveller of the Stockholm subway will have met guys in orange overalls selling it. Their sound is very much a logotype of the student's union so let's listen now to a gentleman generating demand among passers-by at the T-Centralen ("subway central") station. Enjoy. (2007-12-16)
