In this article, I’d like to share with you some new enhancements that Adobe has made to InDesign. I will not cover all of them in this on article, but a few that I think can make a big difference in the way you work with the product.

New User Interface

Adobe has updated the interface to make InDesign inline with many other Adobe apps, such as Illustrator and Photoshop. The advantage of using this is you get a consistent look and feel with other Adobe applications and if you’re a Mac user InDesign is now written in Cocoa.

A new Appearance setting has been introduced in the Preferences dialog box, much like other Creative Cloud applications. You can change the appearance of the user interface by selecting a specific color theme. You can also match the Pasteboard to the selected them color.

1. Open the Preferences dialog box, and choose Interface.
2. Select a Color Theme, or drag the slider to specify a custom value.
3. Enable Match Pasteboard to Theme Color.

InDesign is now 64-bit to leverage RAM beyond 3GB for both Mac and Windows computers. All the features of InDesign have been enabled to work in 64-bit mode. You should see faster processing and an overall speedier experience when working with several large files at one time. On Windows, to take advantage of these features, you must install the 64-bit version.

New Document Dialog Box

The New Document dialog now has the option to show you a preview of the new document. This can be very helpful when trying to set guides, as you can see them as you enter values into the dialog box. Additionally, two icons have been added next to the Document Preset drop-down menu – Save Document Preset and Delete Document Preset.

Generate QR Code

InDesign CC gives you the ability to generate and edit high quality QR code graphics from within InDesign. The generated QR code object behaves exactly like a native piece of vector art inside the program. It’s possible to scale the object and fill it with colors. You can also apply effects, transparency, and printing attributes. What I find very helpful is you can easily copy-paste the code graphics as a vector object into Adobe Illustrator.

The Generate QR Code feature is available via Menu > Object, and via a contextual menu when an empty frame is selected. The Generate/Edit QR Code dialog box has two tabs – Content and Color.

In the Content tab, you can select any one of the following data types in the Type drop-down menu:

• Web Hyperlink
• Plain Text
• Text Message
• Email
• Business Card

The default background of a QR code frame is transparent. However, you can change the Frame’s Fill and Stroke attributes such as the Color, Line Style, and Thickness using the standard controls. If you decide to make a change, you can easily edit the QR code by choosing Object > Edit QR Code. You can also right-click and click Edit QR Code in the context menu.

What else is new?

There are several other new features in InDesign, specifically enhancements made to the ePub workflow. They also made major improvements the Character panel when it comes to finding fonts.
