Special Guest Soloist:

Matt Tropman

Matt Tropman currently serves as Tuba/Euphonium instructor at the University of the Pacific in Stockton. Prior to joining the Pacific faculty, he held a similar position at Eastern Michigan University and was also Executive Director of the Brass Band of Battle Creek. As a former member of the U.S. Marine Band (President’s Own), he frequently performed as a soloist throughout the U.S., including at The White House. Dr. Tropman is an active clinician and recitalist, having performed and taught throughout the U.S. and Europe. He recently published a euphonium method book and has numerous other pedagogy projects in development. Dr. Tropman has released two CD’s: Continuum and From the Balcony which have been featured on programs such as NPR’s “All Things Considered,” and CBC Radio’s “Disc Drive” and “Music and Company.” About From the Balcony the New York Times reviewer observed that “Tropman makes a serious case for the euphonium as a solo instrument.” He has performed with numerous bands, orchestras and chamber groups under conductors such as Leonard Slatkin, Neeme Jarvi and Vladimir Ashkenazy. Dr. Tropman received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan, Master’s degree from Arizona State University, and Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in tuba performance from the University of Michigan.

The Stockton Concert Band will resume rehearsals on August 16, 2011, meeting Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. in Holt Center Room 113 at San Joaquin Delta College, 5151 Pacific Avenue, Stockton. Bring your instrument and join us! There is ample parking at a cost of $1.00 per day. Parking permits may be purchased at one of the many kiosks located in the parking lots.

The Stockton Concert Band is offered as a not for credit/fee class through San Joaquin Delta College Adult Education (ages 18 & up) or Kids’ College (ages 14 to 18) at a cost of $60 per semester. You must register with the college and pay the fee in order to be a member of the band.

High school music students, please note: You are invited to be a member of the Stockton Concert Band, but you must be concurrently enrolled in your high school’s band and obtain permission from both your principal and high school band director. Mr. Holton will provide you with the required forms at the first rehearsal. It is your responsibility to obtain those individuals’ signatures and return the completed forms to Mr. Holton.

Spring semester 2011 rehearsals kick off tonight, Tuesday, January 18, 2011, at 7:00 p.m. in the San Joaquin Delta College Band Room, Holt Center Room 113, on the Delta campus, situated at 5757 Pacific Avenue, Stockton. There is ample parking for a fee of $1.00. (Purchase a daily parking permit from one of the meters located in each parking lot, and permit on the dashboard of your vehicle to avoid receiving a costly citation from campus police.)

In order to be a member of the Band, you must be enrolled as a student at San Joaquin Delta College and enrolled in Music 026 or 028! The fee for one unit of college credit is $26. If you have not previously enrolled in a Delta College class or more than two semesters have elapsed since you last attended the college, you must reapply for admission following the step-by-step directions set forth on Delta’s website.

Note: It is extremely helpful and very much appreciated if you apply and/or register prior to our first rehearsal, because that will enable us to spend less time dealing with administrative/clerical matters and allow us to devote the bulk of our time together rehearsing! However, if you are not able to enroll prior to our first rehearsal, Mr. Holton or a member of the Band will assist you with the application and enrollment process that evening. Please bring a major credit card with which to pay the tuition.
