STONEHAM, MA - Local officials averted a court battle on Tuesday with the City of Melrose over the placement of "Do Not Enter" signs along Ravine Road by agreeing to temporarily lift the traffic restriction.

In exchange, Melrose officials have agreed to try to reach some type of compromise that will address the safety and traffic issues in the residential neighborhood.

STONEHAM, MA - The Selectmen this Tuesday balked at a request from a Main Street convenience store to install a Keno monitor on its premises.

Earlier this week, the Selectmen received notification from the state's lottery commission that The C Store at the intersection of Main and North Streets had received authorization to receive the monitor, which will apparently be used for the new Keno-to-go game.

The correspondence, received just this Tuesday, was issued in accordance with state regulations by Mass. Lottery Commission Executive Dir_ector Mark Cavanagh.

STONEHAM, MA - Frank "Tiger" Burns, The Stoneham Independent Editor from 1949-1991, was perhaps the one constant in the ever-changing Town of Stoneham during his four decade plus run at this hometown newspaper.

Burns, who passed away on Dec. 6, leaves behind a legacy in town as a sometimes-gruff, oft-times brilliant chronicler of all things Stoneham from a bygone era - it was common for Burns to cover sports, news birth announcement, town meetings and absolutely everything in between while painstakingly typing everything out on the Independent's pages.
