From Richard Carey
Subject: Red cross contact
To: Gail J. McGovern
President
American Red Cross

Yes Mam,

If I may for a moment distract you? Over coffee this morning I made a few comments about a recent experience I had with the Red Cross.

My friend Shep Hoffman asks that I contact you and I include his name here.

He lays claims to knowing you and after a brief read about you on Google I can see why he was quick to say so. Surprised that Shep sent me straight to the top, but he said you would appreciate hearing from me. I will do my best to express myself in hopes the trickle down effect makes it all the way back to your people; which in turn comes back in kind to somebody like me all over again. They should know their effect, even on the little things, which are far more reaching than they might expect. The total words exchanged would not fill a crossword puzzle, but their effect will be lasting. My attendance to the spirit imparted will not fail on my watch, their contribution on my lips at every chance I get.

Back ground: My son Matt is in the reserves, now called up for his second deployment. I as his father need not say more about what it means to have loved ones in harms way. The reality of each day, even more the current state of mind father and son share in moments of truth such as times like these leave me humbled and grateful to many such as he. The supreme sacrifice of a life given in service to one another is never more exemplified than those in battle, under fire. So also are the members of the Red Cross as they wade into a sea of suffering where human anguish is the enemy. A type of courage I did not know of until now.

Family matter arises unexpectedly so we call on the Red Cross for help.

We get word of Matt’s grandfather, my father has cancer. Tough times at our house each of us reconciling to ourselves what exactly this means, Matt especially.

Now comes the story I want share with you.

Never new what the word Red Cross meant, not really and I especially did not realize what they meant to me. I recalled their presence in human tragedy over the years so I already have a healthy respect.

The moment I made one call to the Red Cross it was if God himself had moved on my behalf. The Army marches to it’s own beat and that is as it should be.

The Army in it’s wisdom interfaces with the Red Cross giving them authority to cut through all the red tape was my first clue something special was happening.

Yes they made sure Matt saw his grandfather. (ref #645079 I was given) I know it was complicated since the timing was just before they were to ship out. Much appreciated but it is not the reason I am writing to you.

I couldn’t believe one phone call, one request, one person like me among so many could get so much help. My phone rang before and after each step of the process with the same person day or night as if someone had their hand leading me. Compassion in her voice, tender like still float through my head. It was as if we were family. Nine hours after my initial phone call Matt was here with us. I acknowledge in the big scheme of things mine is, relatively speaking, insignificant compared to the many needs our armed services have. Then is when it hit me the hardest.

I set down and wept, a grown man crying tears of joy. Not for myself mind you though turning to my own troubles would seem the norm. There was more to it than that. As I sorted through my feelings I realized I wept for all those men women and family’s the Red Cross touches each and every day. Day in day out they are there silent until needed. As my tears puddle on the floor beneath me I felt a rush of well being. Just to know you are there emboldens me knowing our world has such caring people doing such loving things. Yes I was touched that day by the Red Cross. A person I knew by first name only and never met. What grabbed me at my depths was knowing what it feels like to be touched so, followed by the awareness of all the people you touch, and have touched. To experience the strength in a gentile voice was a comfort to me, but the greatest gift of all is the empathy I feel for all those who find themselves in need, who will have a sanctuary where love conquers all.

To those unspoken heroes of the Red Cross THANK YOU

God’s speed

Richard Carey,

An Architect from a Local firm visited our factory and met with the owner, Richard Carey and his response follows. We helped him find ways to coordinate and simplify his job, reducing mistakes and wasted effort, as well as creating a unique look for his project within a budget.

I do appreciate your time and discussion. It is easy to see that you are passionate about making a high quality product. From a construction side you were able to show high level of quality control and product tracking.

On the architecture side the most important items that I took away from the meeting was the willingness to engage the architect early in the design process for a more efficient process. For me this would be helpful so that I am not wasting time drawing cast stone details that are either wrong or not needed. Also, you mentioned ways to provide a unique design or shape that might not add cost to the project. This area that I would spend the most time with your team if we are all selected for TRT building or another project in the future.

Closeup TV News produced a company profile and documentary on Stone Legends some time ago, and they are about to broadcast the program. They have produced a 30 second commercial for us, click here to view the commercial (http://www.closeuptvnews.com/videos/stonelegendstv/) and will be giving us broadcast dates for the complete program very soon. The dates for broadcast are May 2, June 13, and July 18. We will post the exact times and channels once we know.

This documentary has had everyone at Stone Legends, Stone Magic and Cast Stone Commercial Services very excited. The film team did a wonderful job of capturing our production plant, and our services, and they edited it all into a very well done program. Doug Lleyellyn was an excellent host and interviewer, and he brought out the best in our Owner/General manager, Richard Carey. We can’t thank the Close up TV news team enough, but we’ll try. Thanks to everyone who help produce the program.

I have often said that Starbucks offers us a meeting place to fill one of the most basic of human needs: community with a unique ability to be people without respect of persons. I must admit I have met some very interesting people there but none was more of a surprise than when I met Sam, who I thought was homeless.

After some time of seeing a slightly built man who always seemed to wear the same clothes for his occasional morning coffee, curiosity finally got the best of me and I could not resist engaging him in conversation. I was certain I was speaking to a homeless man when I first took a notion to say something to him. I opened the conversation saying I believed he was homeless, but I just could not be convinced since he always wore new tennis shoes. He was amused at my inquiring in such a manner.

As we struck up a conversation with the usual politenesses, we found common ground from which to continue what would prove to be a divergence from my first impression. We discussed where his family was from, his life growing up there and so forth as we exchanged pleasantries. It was clear there was a lot of character in his values as his personality revealed itself.

Much to my surprise, when he eventually dispelled the notion for me that he was homeless, I had ask what he did for a living. “Well, I am a author,” Sam said. “Are you writing a book” I asked? And he replied “Yes I have just finished it.” Naturally I ask what was the book about and was it published yet because I wanted to buy a copy but only if I could get him to sign it. Without much ado, he promised he would bring me a copy.

Satisfied that I now knew an author and that a book with my name was on the way, our conversation turned again to exchanges of the past. We talked at length about the times in Louisiana where he grew up and much about his family and the values they instilled. A bit of a philosopher, my new friend Sam is, but mostly he just had a kindness in his speech that was charming. My own definition of charming is when someone leaves you feeling better about yourself than when they first arrived.

His unassuming way captured me as I listened to him spin stories of his youth. I sincerely felt as if I had made a special new friend. One of those people you know only for a few minutes and feel like you have known them a long, long time. Sam made me smile and left me hungry for our next exchange. I read once in the Good Book “the desire of a man is his kindness”. Sam is one of those people who made you want to emulate that in him.

Since then I have had several conversations each better than the first. Yes, I did receive my book as he promised, true to his word as I expected. Too I might add is the ease with which I talk to Sam, which is the real tribute to him as a human being; not that he would be any different but more the intimidation I would personally feel had we met with me knowing the homeless man, turned author, my newest friend, was in fact Sam Wyly the billionaire. Price of admission, one cup of coffee $2.00; the friendship that was spawned from such a chance encounter… priceless.

Thank you for the book Sam. It means a lot to me.

Your friend,

Richard
