11-Year Old Rushed to Hospital After Binge Drinking

In the UK, an 11-year old was rushed to the hospital after binging on an excessive amount of vodka. She was found at 10:20 p.m. on a bench in Gloucester. According to the Huffington Post:

A Gloucestershire Police spokesman said: “Police will be taking follow-up action with partner agencies and speaking with the family about the issue.

“A 15-year-old girl who was with the child was spoken to for concealing vodka in a soft drinks bottle.”

The police further said that an adult bought the girl alcohol. Adult in question, really? You are going to buy alcohol to an 11-year old girl. Even if she looked older, how much older could she look?

37 Percent of College Students are Alcoholics

According to the Harvard School of Public Health,37 percent of college students can now be considered alcoholics. One college freshman University freshman Matt Strazzulla gave this thoughts on the findings:

“I believe that they might be overreacting just a bit. Most college students that I know do drink heavily on the weekends, but they do not develop addiction behavior.”

This is the way many peole around the world think, and this is the thinking that has to change. Drinking heavily, which is another way of saying binge drinking, even in spurts, is not good. You can get behind the wheel and kill someone or yourself, or get alcohol poisoning, which can result in death.

Yesterday at church, the pastor was discussing what is a rich life. He said something that stuck in my mind. He said that people always say that they want to live a happy life, but you should be wanting a rich and meaningful life. Happiness is an effect of that. I never thought about it that way. I’m always saying that I’m striving to be happy, but what am I doing to do that? What is my passion? What is my reason for living? The first thing that popped into my head is helping others.

If I can help one person live a better life, then I will feel that my life had meaning. This made me know that my efforts to bring awareness to binge drinking is my reason for living. I know that our little organization can make someone’s life rich and meaningful.

Do States With Stronger Alcohol Control Have Lower Alcohol Deaths?

According to a policy brief released from the Keystone Research Center in Pennsylvania, states with a stronger grip on alcohol sales and distribution also see lower alcohol-related traffic deaths than those that are more hands free.

“It is not surprising that the Keystone Research Center found that state control of alcohol distribution is associated with fewer alcohol-related fatalities,” said Task Force member Karen Glanz, PhD, MPH, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania. “This is in line with the Task Force’s conclusion that retail alcohol privatization increases the risk of excess consumption of alcohol and associated risks. It is also in keeping with a larger body of research that has found negative social impacts from privatization of alcohol distribution.”

We are in the middle of Alcohol Awareness Month. The people at Total DUI have created this infographic showing how much money you waste by getting a Driving Under the Influence (DUI). What is a DUI? It is driving a vehicle while intoxicated. Here are some facts for the infographic:

- It costs the public $51.1 billion for alcohol-induced traffic incidents.
- You might pay upt o $2,000 for a DUI
- Court costs can be between $150 – $2,000, and this does not include an attorney
- Attorney frees can be between $2,000 – $25,000

We haven’t even discussed the time you will be spending going to court, driving school, jail, etc. because you were driving while intoxicated. It isn’t worth it.
If you plan on drinking, use public transportation or bring enough money for a cab. If your buddy gets drunk, DO NOT let him/her drive. Be smart and plan accordingly if you are going to drink while not at home.

In the United States, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, alcohol abuse and drugs increase the chance of a person committing suicide. Alcohol can cause a person suffering from depression from feeling worse, which can lead to thoughts of suicide. Additionally, it makes a person feel invincible, and this impulsive behavior can make someone seriously injure himself/herself.

One out of six people who suffer from alcohol problems will die by taking their own lives. Learn more…

In the UK, gym owner Luiciano Magari was discovered on Feburary 14 dead after a weekend of binge drinking and taking drugs. Deputy Coroner Alan Walsh said, ““It is important that people are warned that there are some drugs in our society that can have the most devastating consequences.” Read the rest of the story…

In Australia, an Annual Alcohol Poll showed that 75 percent of Australians believe their country has a problem with binge drinking and alcohol abuse. 79 percent of those people believe that the alcohol issue will worsen or remain the same in the next five to ten years. FARE chief executive Michael Thorn said that the government needs to create an education campaign on alcohol guidelines and introduce health warning labels on alcohol. Read more…

Military Pathways has created a great infographic that shows the negative affects that alcohol can have on a person. Some of the key points of the infographic:

- Men have 12.5 binge drinking episodes in a year
- 47 percent of men have reported binge drinking in the past 30 days
- 5.3 million of women in the U.S. have drinking episodes that threaten their health and safety
- 37 percent of 9th grade girls who have reported drinking in the past month
- 17 percent of those girls have participated in binge drinking
- Women are more likely to develop alcohol hepatitis (liver inflammation) than men who drink the same amount of alcohol.
- Alcohol hepatitis can lead to cirrhosis of the liver
- Heave alcohol use has increated among military members
- Young men between 18-25 have the highest chance of binge drinking in the military
- The rate of heavy drinking among young military males is twice that of civilian men
- 11 million of people under 21 have reported rinking

Colorado Teens are Drinking Less, But Still a Problem, Survey Finds

In Colorado, a Healthy Kids Colorado survey was conducted that showed that almost two-thirds of Colorado teens have drank at least one alcohol drink in their lives, and more than one-half have participated in binge drinking in the past month. The good news is that the number of underage drinking has decreased. However, it is still a huge problem.
