In this spot for Com Hem once again plays with a viral Youtube clip that some of you may have seen – the OMG Cat . A clip where a cute kitten drops it’s jaw to the floor, in total “surprise”.
Mats Lindberg from Traktor approached Stopp’s VFX Team, asking us to help him copy the style of the OMG Cat clip as closely as possible. Having worked with Mats on earlier projects we knew that he is really in to the details, so when he means close, he means it.
Everything from the background, film quality, body movement and eyes, fur pattern, to the jaw dropping must be as close a match to the original as possible. As we all know cats are not easily directed so to solve the task a fair amount of digital effects and thorough planning was needed.
Stopp was there from the beginning. With experience from earlier projects (Tele2 Beatbox), we knew we could solve the jaw with a head/jaw replace. For that the 3D department had to model the cat’s head and track the movement.
A lot of moving and stills reference photography of the cat was taken on set, as well as shooting HDR lighting stills and collecting on-set data etc.
With this in the bag we knew we could solve the task. Of course there was a lot left to do. The filmed performance of the new cat was not matching the original. It was looking in the wrong direction, it’s eyes were too small, the body movement was off, the ears were moving when they shouldn’t and the cat was all white when it should really be striped on the head. And of course it was not dropping it’s jaw at all. These were all things that needed to be taken care of.
First the jaw was modelled in 3D, textured and head movements tracked. In the mean time – in online – several things were taken care of with Flame as the main tool. First the cats eyes were enlarged with warping. Sometimes the cat’s eyes were focusing in the wrong direction, this was also fixed by tracking and replacing with new eyes. The cat’s ears were moving all over the place so they were also replaced. In one of the shots the cat had to make a sudden move, a move that wasn’t caught on film. So to replicate this move the whole cat needed to be rotoscoped with fur and all and then warped to match the original OMG Cat motion. The original cat also had gray stripes on it’s head. To fix this a new head texture with stripes were painted and tracked/warped in place.
Later animated mouth-pieces were delivered from 3D and composited on top of the cat’s closed mouth. They were subtly warped and tweaked to deliver the final surprised OMG Cat look. Lastly the HD material was matched in quality and feel to look like hand held consumer video mangled through Youtube compression a couple of times.

Moland Film in Norway approached Stopp with Joachim Trier directing Canal Digital “Spring”.
In this commercial we see a couple in their apartment having an argument.
As the argument progresses we see that the man is actually a projection being transmitted into the living room.
The look for the projection was to go through several design stages, with Skype’s digital breakup as the primary influence.
A mixture of 3D particles and 2D fx was finally used.
The final client approvals were held remotely with Norway.

At lindexstreetstories.com you can share your own looks and inspire, as well as get inspired by others.

The site is driven from a open source content management system called WordPress. The Theme is custom made, where JavaScript and jQuery is used to guarantee a seamless user experience and smooth transitions between content and imagery. The user can upload multiple images to contribute with his looks, where WordPress acts also as approval tool for the site administrators. We extended the backend in different ways, to automate some steps in the publishing process. A widget (code snippet) allows to embed a post on other blogs, which creates a backlink to the page.

Siggraph 2010 · Day four

Fourth day we attended a great talk about Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. It was a production with a very short time schedule, pre-production started in June 2008, principle photography in September, stage shoot in November, and finally post production from April 2009 to January 2010. We got a round tour of the various characters in the production, which were divided into three types; hybrid characters, a mix between CG and shot elements, realistic characters, such as regular animals and finally the stylized characters such as the Cheshire Cat.

Siggraph 2010 · Day three

Third day kicked off with a nice talk about Iron Man 2, followed by a talk aptly named “Blow $h!t up!,” discussing various rigid body and deformable physics approaches to destruction on movies like 2012. We also visited the exhibition, see images below. We ended the day with a panel discussion about the creation of Tron: Legacy, as well as 8 exiting minutes of stereoscopic footage from the upcoming movie, shown with the Real D stereo projection system.

Siggraph 2010 · Day two

Day two started off with another amazing Avatar talk named All About Avatar. Slightly technical as well, it delved deeper into some of the novel techniques that were created by Cameron and Weta Digital, such as the virtual production stage, which allowed the director to move about the set, shooting his actors with a virtual camera, in which he could see a realtime representation of the digital world.

Siggraph 2010 · Day one

The first talk talk of Siggraph covered character deformation and rendering techniques for the massive scenes in in the movie Avatar. Instead of using a regular rig system with a weighted skin mesh, the characters was built from the bones up, modeling bones, muscles fascia and outer skin, all simulated for collisions, allowing complex sliding of bones and muscles underneath the skin.
