Wayne Rainey Demolition Photo Stands Out at Juried Artlink Exhibition

The exhibition, featuring a photograph by Wayne Rainey, was a one night only event at The Heard Museum. Excerpt from the Phoenix New Times article by Lynn Trimble:

Phoenix photographer Wayne Rainey, a longtime artist and activist in Roosevelt Row who owns the monOrchid building, opted for provocative rather than pleasing. He showed a large-scale photograph that’s both strangely alluring and deeply disturbing.

Titled Illumination, it’s a nighttime capture of construction debris from the properties destroyed in March 2015 to make way for iLuminate, which is one of two Baron Properties multi-level housing developments currently under construction at the intersection of Roosevelt and Third streets, iLuminate sits adjacent to monOrchid, Rainey's arts and events space.

Rainey’s intention with the piece is clear. He’s voiced strong criticism of Baron Properties through social media, and expressed his concern that artists who partner with Baron Properties or other developers who demolish beloved buildings are taking part in the demise of their own arts community.

Within hours of Artlink wrapping up its single-day exhibition, Rainey posted comments on his Facebook page that included the following, and he's posted additional comments since:

"Well that was an interesting night. It had all the components of a good drama with no casualties except perhaps an arts district. If only there were an organization present, that promoted the arts and artists, that could have stood erect and told Baron Properties that we are not the cheap sluts you take us for and what you're trying to buy is not for sale."
After Baron Properties demolished a building bearing Lauren Lee’s Three Birds mural to make way for iLuminate, it commissioned Lee to create mural-inspired panels collectively called Three Birds in Flight, which they’ve already mounted on iLuminate’s west-facing façade.

Rainey also called out Artlink in his post on exhibition night, writing, "ArtLink is dead. It died the minute it wed the Dev that tore into our heart." For Rainey, art took the form of activism. And activism took the form of art.

The bold nature of Rainey’s work, an exquisite composition even without its powerful context, made everything around it look safe – including the trio of works chosen for special recognition.

Wayne Rainey was recently called upon to photograph former Phoenix mayors Paul Johnson, Skip Rimsza and Phil Gordon at the home Frank Lloyd Wright House built for his son in Phoenix. In May 2012, Phoenix nearly lost this architecturally significant historical home — the David Wright House in Arcadia.

In 1950, Frank Lloyd Wright designed the home for his son David on 10 acres in the middle of citrus groves with magnificent views of Camelback Mountain and Papago Peak. Completed in 1952, the David Wright House is one of three spiral designs by Mr. Wright. It is a precursor to the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. The house is regarded as Mr. Wright's last residential masterpiece. It is an architectural jewel, but until recently very few knew it even existed.

Michael Gellatly: Artist in Residence

"Dig Turned Painting"

After the jump, technical illustrator, mapmaker, and sculptor, Michael Gellatly reflects on his second residency at The Vermont Studio Center.

Vermont Studio Center, and my February 2015 artist residency.

This being my second fellowship at VSC, (the first was in May, 2011), I can say euphorically, that the place is magical. My work was transformed by environment, serendipity, conversation and accident.

One of my current projects, (that manifested prior to attending the Center in 2011), is working with fictional plants, specifically, a very fictional ‘Ice Plant’. My practices are purely artistic, and inspired by acting the botanist on the stage of the Anthropocene Theatre. So attempting the practical, I chose to take this ice project to northern Vermont in the dead of winter. It was perfect! The average temperatures in the area were -10 to -15 degrees. What started as a studio project transformed into a site specific performance. I started freezing tinted water in thin tubular colored laytex sleeves, thereby amassing ‘building blocks’ which would in turn be assembled into organic configurations, (my idea of Ice Plants). These forms, the Ice Plants, were photographed to be used as materials in my artistic research. Early in the residency, looking for more organic quality, I moved an Ice Plant outside and buried it deep into an existing snow bank and began injecting water through channels into the burial chamber.

The following day I thought that excavating this piece out of the snow could be more visually revealing if, rather then digging it out as I had buried it from the top, I dug carefully towards it from the face of the snow bank. This method of search became an archeological dig in nature! What progressed over the next two weeks of my residency was a complete transfiguration of the project. From the earlier botanical works, this project has been flirting with science and fiction. Moving outside to stage an archeological ‘dig’, continued that magic. The snow became a white canvas that offered multiple artistic voices. As I proceeded to move down along the snow bank, carving carefully into it’s face I hit on, and exposed Abstraction. Still further down, and deeper in, I discovered the birth of a new Language and several forms of sentence structure!

In 2006 Michael Gellatly was commissioned by Random House to create a series of fully embellished map illustrations for George R.R. Martin's long anticipated book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, The World of Ice and Fire - the never-before-seen history of Westeros and the Lands Beyond. With the book scheduled for release today, we are able to share with you these maps of mythical places. Says Gellatly, "It was quite the adventure!" Michael talks more about the project, and how he came to work with George R. R. Martin in this interview with AltPick. And after the jump, we'll learn a little more about Michael's process in the creation of these maps, and look at some example of the early concepts alongside the fully realized final versions.

Production set to begin on “Price Per Barrel” An Independent Documentary Film

New documentary explores the relationships between energy boom towns, emergency services, and the community.

Robin Behl, in partnership with Wayne Rainey of Rainey Studios, artist Steven Yazzie, and the nonprofit group Shade Projects in Phoenix, Arizona have combined forces to begin production on an independent documentary film illustrating the pressures of rapid population expansion on local emergency services and healthcare providers in a small North Dakota farming community at the epicenter of the Bakken Oil Reserve energy boom. This will be the first in a series of documentaries profiling communities around North America that have experienced similar boom and bust resource challenges, not just in the oilfield, but in mining, agricultural and tourist centers historically and presently. What works and what doesn’t? How do we find ways to adapt to rapidly changing needs? How can we access and utilize our resources in a more sustainable fashion?

The film, "Price Per Barrel" focuses on Watford City, North Dakota, in the northwestern part of the state, 40 miles south of Williston, in the heart of one of the largest oil and gas reserves in North America. It will also compare Watford City to Artesia, New Mexico, an example of a sustainable oil and gas community.

The men and women of public safety and healthcare in Watford City have struggled to keep up with a town population and resulting call volume that have tripled in the past five years. They have risen far above and beyond the call of duty but they still do the job with altruism, professionalism and a dedication to service that is increasingly rare today. What’s happening in Watford City is both an important moment in history to document and a vehicle for illustrating the human story behind a boom or bust economy. Artesia, however, has formed personal relationships with the major oil corporations drilling in their community and has put their money to good use, supporting public safety, education, healthcare, the arts and local infrastructure. It could be the model industrial city for many others like it.

What came first, love of sport or love of photography? How does that first love affect your work/style today?

I would have to say my love for sports came first. I was involved with soccer, baseball, basketball and football as a kid and into high school. One of my early memories of really getting excited about photography was going over to my best friends house and scrolling through slides on the projector, looking at all the exotic places my friends dad had traveled to. It was really inspiring to me to see all the interesting places and people he had photographed and I wanted to experience that too.

I would have to say that my real focus on sports lifestyle imagery didn't really take hold until my senior year at BYU when I was contemplating what to do for my senior BFA show. Since the Olympics were to be held in a couple years in Salt Lake City, it seemed to be the perfect fit to do a show focused on portraits of various summer and winter Olympic athletes. From there my love for photographing athletes really developed.

What are some of the differences and similarities in working with high profile vs low profile professional athletes? Child athletes?

One of the biggest obvious differences is the time allotted for a photo shoot. For example, a few years back I photographed NBA superstar, Kevin Garnett. It was a magazine cover shoot for Sports Illustrated Kids magazine and I knew we had one shot to nail it. We had one lighting set up in the hallway of the arena and an additional lighting set up on the court. We literally had 10 minutes with him at each set up and the shoot was over in 20 min. Quickly connecting and directing the high profile athletes is important.

A couple years back I photographed Blake Griffin for a cover shoot for DIME Magazine and this was before he was a superstar. He gave me at least an hour for the shoot and at the end he was very gracious to sign a basketball I had brought to the shoot. After he signed it he said, "I'm not sure my signature is very legible on this ball, let me go over it again so you can see it better". I was laughing inside thinking "Gosh, this guy is about to become a millionaire. This will be the last time he'll care about how his autograph looks on a ball!"

I have a lot of fun photographing kids doing sports. They're easy to direct and willing to try anything.

Please discuss the difficulties associated with your chosen style. Special equipment needed for projects, environment hazards potentially damaging to equipment, ie water series?

Speaking of, your recent water series was in development for many years, how has technology affected your ability to move forward on this project? How do different projects affect the type of equipment you will use?

The water series, like many of the shoots I come with, was kicking around in my mind for almost a year. There were so many elements that went into making it work, such as the time of year I'd shoot it, the temperature, time of day, background, finding a location with warm water, finding athletes who could do the various poses I had in mind, renting the proper lighting gear, timing the splash with the poses etc etc. For that shoot I rented the amazing Profoto 8A packs which offer a very short flash duration and ultra fast recycle time, both very important for capturing the moment of motion and splash I was looking for. I took one day to photograph some local teenagers, to test out my ideas. The second day of shooting I photographed more accomplished adult athletes. Ironically, several of my very favorite shots were from the first night of the 16 year old baseball player.

I also shoot with a Nikon D4 which has a very fast motor drive and nails difficult focusing situations every time. When I graduated from BYU with a BFA, I owned a Nikon F100 and Mamiya RZ67. The Mamiya was my primary camera. I would get 10 frames per roll and manually focus and hand crank the film advance. Every shot was much more thought out, metered and carefully executed, knowing how much it was costing me. Now I still use many of those principles I learned while working with film cameras, I'm just able to work much more quickly and efficiently.

Has technology had any negative impacts on the photography industry in your eyes?

I recently attended Photo LA, a big annual photo gallery exhibit in Santa Monica. I saw a framed print taken of Ansel Adams in Yosemite by his then assistant Ted Orland. I just had to buy it. Its a shot looking through the trees at Ansel changing the settings on his 4x5 camera as he prepares to take a picture. I now have it hanging on my office wall. It reminds me everyday to slow down and think about what I'm doing and not rushing the process. I think its important to remember this while taking pictures and running a business.

You’re a designer and illustrator. Do you consider yourself one more than the other? How do you approach your different styles and what makes them similar?

The only thing that I’m sure is that I love creating images. That is my mission. The love of images allows for self discovery through the work. When you see a panoramic image for the first time and discover yourself in it. This is the sense of my approach to imagery. And they are all a part of me.

What are some of the challenges associated with combining styles and mediums? Vector art vs. collage and assemblage?

Superman

What is common in my work is the adulteration of imagery. assembling and combining things. As a boy I filled the bedroom door with stickers to leave a sign. This is the same reason I love public art. I love creating images and it’s not important whether that’s done with computers or pen and ink; what is important to me is creating.

What is it like working with different agencies? How did it broaden your view of the agency/art world?

It is nice to work with different people on rep different situations and projects, adds a level of excitement. My approach to the work has changed as I have matured. Now I am more polished and relaxed.

How does your local region affect your work? What is the market like for your work compared to the rest of the world?

Pride Runs Deep

Today Italy is a country in ruins that causes people to suffer and die. But we are our country. I suffered a lot because of its dynamics. The unfair logic with no meritocracy. This creates within me a tension, a desire to communicate and discover what I really am. I’ve always worked with a lot of difficulties in my country. I hope that everything collapses and something new will be born for our people, for our young people, for all the beauty that we recover. It’s time to grow up.
