A twist of fate put photographer Wayne Rainey together with acclaimed and controversial indie artist Mark Kozelek of Sun Kil Moon & Red House Painters. After a quick introduction, Rainey was able to get Kozelek in front of the camera for a couple of minutes. The result, entitled, "Broken" is a stark portrait set within a jagged frame. A departure for Rainey, but indicative of the power of his photographs.

Mark Kozelek was in Phoenix performing at the Crescent Ballroom. An American singer, songwriter, guitarist, record producer and occasional actor. Kozelek is best known as the vocalist and primary recording artist of the indie folk act Sun Kil Moon, with whom he has recorded eight studio albums, and as the vocalist, guitarist and founding member of the indie rock band Red House Painters, with whom he recorded six studio albums from 1989 until 2001. He is currently on tour.

Wayne Rainey is showing his work tonight as part of Chaos Theory 17 in downtown Phoenix.

Wayne Rainey Demolition Photo Stands Out at Juried Artlink Exhibition

The exhibition, featuring a photograph by Wayne Rainey, was a one night only event at The Heard Museum. Excerpt from the Phoenix New Times article by Lynn Trimble:

Phoenix photographer Wayne Rainey, a longtime artist and activist in Roosevelt Row who owns the monOrchid building, opted for provocative rather than pleasing. He showed a large-scale photograph that’s both strangely alluring and deeply disturbing.

Titled Illumination, it’s a nighttime capture of construction debris from the properties destroyed in March 2015 to make way for iLuminate, which is one of two Baron Properties multi-level housing developments currently under construction at the intersection of Roosevelt and Third streets, iLuminate sits adjacent to monOrchid, Rainey's arts and events space.

Rainey’s intention with the piece is clear. He’s voiced strong criticism of Baron Properties through social media, and expressed his concern that artists who partner with Baron Properties or other developers who demolish beloved buildings are taking part in the demise of their own arts community.

Within hours of Artlink wrapping up its single-day exhibition, Rainey posted comments on his Facebook page that included the following, and he's posted additional comments since:

"Well that was an interesting night. It had all the components of a good drama with no casualties except perhaps an arts district. If only there were an organization present, that promoted the arts and artists, that could have stood erect and told Baron Properties that we are not the cheap sluts you take us for and what you're trying to buy is not for sale."
After Baron Properties demolished a building bearing Lauren Lee’s Three Birds mural to make way for iLuminate, it commissioned Lee to create mural-inspired panels collectively called Three Birds in Flight, which they’ve already mounted on iLuminate’s west-facing façade.

Rainey also called out Artlink in his post on exhibition night, writing, "ArtLink is dead. It died the minute it wed the Dev that tore into our heart." For Rainey, art took the form of activism. And activism took the form of art.

The bold nature of Rainey’s work, an exquisite composition even without its powerful context, made everything around it look safe – including the trio of works chosen for special recognition.

How to Name Image Files

The Importance of Naming Image Files: A How-to for Artists

As a rep agency, we receive images from all over the world. usually attached to an email in the form of an artist submission. And while the photographer or illustrator may have put a lot of thought into the images selected to make a cohesive portfolio, most seem to care very little about naming the files. But did you know that a good file name can help with your SEO? Whether it's on the internet or in your client's Gmail, an image with a proper file name can help more people find it. A proper image filename is your first step on the road to a cohesive strategy for image SEO.

This article is part of our ongoing series of tips and tricks for commercial artists.

What's in a Name?

Often, we'll see file names like this:

001.jpg
002.jpg

_RR44345.jpg
_RR44346.jpg

Maybe the artists name in there like

artistname.jpg
artistnamesubmission.jpg

Or maybe a descriptive word like

cat.jpg
dog.jpg

All of these file names suck. "Cat" and "Dog" suck the least, but we still need to do better. We need to adopt some universal rules, and come to an understanding on why it's important. We place all our stock in the content of an image, spend hours tweaking the color and light, cropping, etc., and when we're done, we'll "Save for the Web" in Photoshop and share our latest creation with the world. And what do we name this masterpiece?!

You won't be surprised if that's a fairly popular name for an image on the web. A quick Google search for "image.jpg" will return over a billion hits. Much like bad passwords can damage your security, bad image names can harm your ability to get found. Let's think about how.

SEO for Images Starts with a Proper Filename.

If you're uploading the image to your website or blog, you will likely end up with a URL that includes the image file name in the URL. For example, http://www.myportfolio.com/image.jpg That's not doing yourself any favors with the search engines. http://www.myportfolio.com/red-ripe-tomato.jpg tells Google Image Search just what to expect.

Speaking of search, what if you're attaching it to an email? I have 35,000 emails in Gmail. I can't scroll through that to find anything. I have to rely on the search features. So if I remember someone sending in a photograph of a tomato sitting on a cutting board, but the name of file is "image1.jpg" I'm gonna have a bad time trying to find it if I can't remember the artist's name.

So what do we suggest? Descriptive words about the image content, your name, and (if necessary) a serial number or other identifier. Companies like Flickr, Facebook, and Microsoft are all working on automatically tagging your images based on the visual content with mixed results. This feature will only get better with time, but for now, it's still very important to tell search engines the content of the image. And it starts with a good filename.

Avoid special characters. That includes accents, umlauts, dollar signs and anything else that could confuse things. There are many types of web servers and devices out there. All kinds of issues can arise from the use of special characters in an URL, so stick to the basics: Lower case letters, Numbers, and Dashes. Skip the underscores, blank spaces, and "CamelCasing". Underscores are completely different from dashes in the way Google and other search engines interpret them, spaces and CamelCasing both create difficult URLs. Apple provides some more detail in this article about cross-platform filenames.

Avoid unnecessary "Stop Words". You can usually skip words like "A", "To", "The", and probably a lot of prepositions as well, unless they are pertinent to the file name. So "The Red Ripe Tomato on a Cutting Board" as a file name should probably be reduced to "Red Ripe Tomato on Cutting Board". And keeping in mind what we said earlier about case sensitivity and special characters, we've now boiled the file name down to just "red-ripe-tomato-on-cutting-board.jpg"

Gone are the days when we had to worry about the length of a filename. Modern operating systems can handle up to 255 English characters, but most SEO experts feel 150 characters is about all you'll need. About 8 words, tops.

Next Steps: Titles, Alt Tags, and More.

Once your image is on the web, most blogging and development platforms will allow you to give the image a Title, Description, Caption, and Alt Tags where you can provide even more information about the image. Here's an excellent article on how to do image SEO in WordPress. Most SEO experts agree; Focus on your Title and Alt Tags. Google has a set of image publishing guidelines that further detail their best practices for image SEO.

Pro Tip: Use the batch renaming function of Photoshop or GIMP to quickly rename images. For example, you could add "-your-name-photography" to the end of each of your image filenames with just a couple of clicks.

"Rainey Studios enjoyed working with ad guru graphic designer Erik von Weber and our client Alvaro Sande (Sencorp) on the forth coming en Hance Park project. This will be the view from the 4 floor of the parkside condominiums designed by Shepley Bullfinch. We photographed more than 6 panels and then stitched the best together to create a 3.5 GB final panoramic file, large enough for a high detail wall cover that will be some 5 feet wide. An extra special thanks to Natasha Mishano (crew/post production assistant) and Michael Muratore (our agent and producer at Store 44 Reps) for as always helping us prepare the front end so we get the job done right. Wayne Rainey was recently called upon to photograph former Phoenix mayors Paul Johnson, Skip Rimsza and Phil Gordon at the home Frank Lloyd Wright House built for his son in Phoenix. In May 2012, Phoenix nearly lost this architecturally significant historical home — the David Wright House in Arcadia.

In 1950, Frank Lloyd Wright designed the home for his son David on 10 acres in the middle of citrus groves with magnificent views of Camelback Mountain and Papago Peak. Completed in 1952, the David Wright House is one of three spiral designs by Mr. Wright. It is a precursor to the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. The house is regarded as Mr. Wright's last residential masterpiece. It is an architectural jewel, but until recently very few knew it even existed.

Michael Gellatly: Artist in Residence

"Dig Turned Painting"

After the jump, technical illustrator, mapmaker, and sculptor, Michael Gellatly reflects on his second residency at The Vermont Studio Center.

Vermont Studio Center, and my February 2015 artist residency.

This being my second fellowship at VSC, (the first was in May, 2011), I can say euphorically, that the place is magical. My work was transformed by environment, serendipity, conversation and accident.

One of my current projects, (that manifested prior to attending the Center in 2011), is working with fictional plants, specifically, a very fictional ‘Ice Plant’. My practices are purely artistic, and inspired by acting the botanist on the stage of the Anthropocene Theatre. So attempting the practical, I chose to take this ice project to northern Vermont in the dead of winter. It was perfect! The average temperatures in the area were -10 to -15 degrees. What started as a studio project transformed into a site specific performance. I started freezing tinted water in thin tubular colored laytex sleeves, thereby amassing ‘building blocks’ which would in turn be assembled into organic configurations, (my idea of Ice Plants). These forms, the Ice Plants, were photographed to be used as materials in my artistic research. Early in the residency, looking for more organic quality, I moved an Ice Plant outside and buried it deep into an existing snow bank and began injecting water through channels into the burial chamber.

The following day I thought that excavating this piece out of the snow could be more visually revealing if, rather then digging it out as I had buried it from the top, I dug carefully towards it from the face of the snow bank. This method of search became an archeological dig in nature! What progressed over the next two weeks of my residency was a complete transfiguration of the project. From the earlier botanical works, this project has been flirting with science and fiction. Moving outside to stage an archeological ‘dig’, continued that magic. The snow became a white canvas that offered multiple artistic voices. As I proceeded to move down along the snow bank, carving carefully into it’s face I hit on, and exposed Abstraction. Still further down, and deeper in, I discovered the birth of a new Language and several forms of sentence structure!

In 2006 Michael Gellatly was commissioned by Random House to create a series of fully embellished map illustrations for George R.R. Martin's long anticipated book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, The World of Ice and Fire - the never-before-seen history of Westeros and the Lands Beyond. With the book scheduled for release today, we are able to share with you these maps of mythical places. Says Gellatly, "It was quite the adventure!" Michael talks more about the project, and how he came to work with George R. R. Martin in this interview with AltPick. And after the jump, we'll learn a little more about Michael's process in the creation of these maps, and look at some example of the early concepts alongside the fully realized final versions.

For the third time, illustrator Carlos Araujo is set to be included in the Luerzer's Special 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide. Selected were five of Araujo's illustrations, including covers for Schizzibooks and Salamandra, an anaglyph 3D pin-up for Strange Kid’s Club, and illustrations for educational books. The 2014/2015 edition showcases a “collection of top-class illustration work selected from more than 5,000 submissions from 1,050 illustrators from no fewer than 67 countries. The exhibition was created in Dublin. All the works were made with a graphic tablet & pen drawing directly to the computer. Then the works were sent to Eggenstein in Germany where they have been printed and published in limited edition of 7 by International Graphics Walmsley GombH (www.ig-team.de)

The exhibition is made of 26 works, the smallest one measuring 20x30cm (7.8x11.8in) the largest ones 150x226cm (55x89in)

New documentary explores the relationships between energy boom towns, emergency services, and the community.

Robin Behl, in partnership with Wayne Rainey of Rainey Studios, artist Steven Yazzie, and the nonprofit group Shade Projects in Phoenix, Arizona have combined forces to begin production on an independent documentary film illustrating the pressures of rapid population expansion on local emergency services and healthcare providers in a small North Dakota farming community at the epicenter of the Bakken Oil Reserve energy boom. This will be the first in a series of documentaries profiling communities around North America that have experienced similar boom and bust resource challenges, not just in the oilfield, but in mining, agricultural and tourist centers historically and presently. What works and what doesn’t? How do we find ways to adapt to rapidly changing needs? How can we access and utilize our resources in a more sustainable fashion?

The film, "Price Per Barrel" focuses on Watford City, North Dakota, in the northwestern part of the state, 40 miles south of Williston, in the heart of one of the largest oil and gas reserves in North America. It will also compare Watford City to Artesia, New Mexico, an example of a sustainable oil and gas community.

The men and women of public safety and healthcare in Watford City have struggled to keep up with a town population and resulting call volume that have tripled in the past five years. They have risen far above and beyond the call of duty but they still do the job with altruism, professionalism and a dedication to service that is increasingly rare today. What’s happening in Watford City is both an important moment in history to document and a vehicle for illustrating the human story behind a boom or bust economy. Artesia, however, has formed personal relationships with the major oil corporations drilling in their community and has put their money to good use, supporting public safety, education, healthcare, the arts and local infrastructure. It could be the model industrial city for many others like it.

Robin Behl is a firefighter/paramedic turned Physician Assistant turned storyteller who has left the practice of medicine and set off on a 15,000 mile journey around the United States writing about the practice of medicine in North American boom towns.

Steven Yazzie is a multidisciplinary Native American artist and visual storyteller as well as a producer who is passionate about recording cultural history through the context of land as a source of identity, conflict and explicit resource.

Wayne Rainey is a local cinematographer, commercial and art photographer and urban pioneer who has played a major role in the revitalization of downtown phoenix. He has been an advocate for the arts, artists, environmental stewardship and sustainable communities.
