Chemistry and Interior Design

When I was a teenager I’ve dreamed of becoming an interior designer but I wasn’t able to pursue it because I’ve followed my mom’s suggestion to take up chemical engineering in college. And now I’m already working as a chemist in a manufacturing company. Although I end up in a different career, my heart for designing is still there. This morning it triggers more when I’ve stumble a great design idea, an interior home décor with a touch of chemistry. I’m referring to the home lightings below. It’s a chandelier made of laboratory test tubes.

I cannot try this at home because our ceiling is too low so, I’ll just make my own design fit for low ceilings.

This is it for now, I still have to look for mettler balance for our Laboratory needs. Happy weekened!

My daughter likes to buy customized t-shirts which is a little bit costly and oftentimes you won't get the exact shirt you have in mind. You know, it is not really hard to make your own tee design. With the right resources and creativity, you can have your personalized shirt in no time.

Yesterday my daughter downloaded a software in logo and design making. I know she has talent in making graphic designs, so I told her to study the software and do some experiments in t-shirt design making. Who knows someday she might use her talent and skill as a source of income.

Vanilla Dutch Baby

Everyday we're preparing snacks for our kids. As much as possible we want to give them healthy snacks but the problem is we’re running of snack ideas. I remember my friend suggested a certain recipe called Vanilla Dutches however I can’t fully recall the ingredients and procedure. So I just checked the internet to see if I can find the recipe.

Well, what I found is Vanilla Dutch Baby recipe and not vanilla dutches recipe. Anyway, I copied the recipe and will try it at home. If you’re interested I posted the ingredients and procedures below.

Recipe by Melissa d'Arabian

Ingredients

3 tablespoons butter

3 eggs

3/4 cup all-purpose flour

3/4 cup milk, heated 20 to 30 seconds in the microwave

1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Pinch salt

1 pint fresh or frozen blueberries

1 teaspoon sugar

1/2 teaspoon fresh lemon zest

2 tablespoons confectioners' sugar

Directions

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

Place the butter in a large saute pan and place in the oven to melt.

Meanwhile, in a blender, combine the eggs, flour, hot milk, 1 tablespoon sugar, vanilla extract, and pinch of salt, and blend on medium-high speed until uniform. Cook's Note: If mixing by hand, combine the eggs with the milk until the mixture is light yellow and no longer stringy, about 1 minute. Add the flour, sugar, vanilla, and pinch of salt, and whisk vigorously to remove the lumps, about 30 seconds.

Carefully, remove the hot pan from the oven. The butter should be melted. Swirl the butter around the pan to coat completely, and then pour the remaining butter into the batter and whisk to blend. Pour the batter into the hot pan and return the pan to the oven. Cook the pancake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the pancake is puffed in the center, and golden brown along the edges.

While the Dutch baby bakes, in a small bowl combine the fresh blueberries, 1 teaspoon sugar, and lemon zest. Stir to coat, and set aside to marinate.

Using a spatula, remove the entire Dutch baby from the pan and place on a cooling rack for a few minutes to allow the steam to escape without condensing along the bottom and rendering the pancake soggy. Slice the pancake into wedges on a serving platter or cutting board and sprinkle with the confectioners' sugar through a sieve. Serve with the marinated blueberries.

I asked my son what summer activity he would like to do this summer and he said he wanted to learn to play guitar. Good thing we already have a guitar in the house (a relative gave us Bedell guitar last Christmas) so what we only need now is the coach or music teacher. Since my daughter is one of the keyboardists in our Church music team, I hope she can ask a favor from their guitar player to teach his brother some basic guitar lessons. It’s a blessing if he agreed since enrolling in a music school is quite pricey. Otherwise we'll just look for free guitar lessons online.^_^

My husband’s birthday is coming soon so I’m already looking for the best gift, something that would make him happy. While surfing the net I came across these personalized golf gifts like golf shirts, hats, jackets, towels, hats, and customized golf balls. This gave me an idea. He doesn’t play golf but he loves playing basketball, so I might consider giving him a personalized basketball ball.

I like giving personalized gifts to my loved ones and friends. I believe personalized gifts will be appreciated more than the simply store bought gifts.

Graduation gift

It’s my daughter’s graduation day tomorrow, she will be graduating in high school. As parents we are happy with our daughter’s accomplishments. So for her graduation gift we really wanted to give her the best. If we only had the means, we would buy her a DSLR camera that she really desires, or the Sony VAIO laptop or the Asus Eee Pad Transformer. Sadly, none of the above is within our budget. We told her that we could give her desired gift but not at this moment. I’m glad that our daughter understands the situation.

Now, since we can’t buy those gadgets for her, we’ll just give her a more affordable gift, something that she will like and appreciate. Any suggestions? :)

Abusive employer

My brother has been working as a nurse in a private clinic for 9 months now and yet up to now he’s only receiving a small allowance. We believe his employer is already taking advantage of him. My brother wants to leave but his employer told him that he cannot get a certificate of employment if he will not work for a minimum of two years. Imagine that, he has to work for his employer for two years without receiving the right compensation due to him. Anyway, we told our brother that we will help him find another job. I can help him through online job search.

Right now my brother is specializing in handling patients undergoing dialysis. Since dialysis nurses are few, the demand for them is higher compared to regular staff nurse. My brother is also aiming to have an experience in handling Howard Medical hospital cart. It’s a special type of medical cart because it is computerized. These special trainings are part of his preparation to pursue his plan to work abroad.

I know a lot of nurses here in our country have the same situation or had bad experiences from their abusive employers. We’ve heard a lot of news or stories about it. It's really sad and disappointing.

My job requires us to wear protective clothing because we’re handling corrosive chemicals. In the laboratory a lab gown is usually worn by lab analysts’ while those in the production area they are not just wearing protective clothing but other safety gears as well like safety hat, safety shoes, gloves and face masks.

Other type of work clothes that I would like to wear is the bib overalls for women. I think I can work comfortably with this outfit as I can move around without hassle, however the weather here in our place is not appropriate for this style. I will surely sweat a lot! ^-^
