We are pleased to announce that we have reached our required 30 film submissions, and set a date for our New Zealand screening event.

Ahem...the New Zealand screening event will be held on Tuesday the 23rd of September at Fat Eddies bar in Christchurch, New Zealand.

If you can't make it to the real world event then don't worry you can still join in. We will webcast the footage from the event live onto our website, along with live web-chat, vodcasting and blogging.

We have received some fantastic innovative edits of the stray Cinema footage from all over the world. Please vote for your favorite edits to determine which five films will be screened at this event.

Thanks to everyone who has participated thus far, and btw submissions don't close until the 23rd of July...

I would like to say a huge big thank-you to the Victoria University digital media design students who recently submitted a bunch of films to Stray Cinema.

There are some creative and unique stories that have been told with our footage, so please take the time to watch and comment on a few.

One of my personal favourites was how to get free babysitting from Soph120...however my vote is as valuable as yours, what do you think of it?

Stray Cinema can now independantly host film submissions

Today has been an important day for Stray Cinema. We have now reached a total of 41 film submissions surpassing the 30 submission target for setting a screening date. The screening event this year will take place 6 months from now in Christchurch, New Zealand, where the footage was filmed. Stay tuned for an official announcement on a confirmed date, time and venue.

Yesterday we launched a series of updates for the website. The main feature introduced is hosting of films ourselves without the need for YouTube. This gives us greater flexibility and allows the film submission process to be more streamlined.

I have been carefully monitoring all submissions with the new system and following up on some issues that arose earlier. Currently everything is working as expected and there are no known problems. If you run into problems submitting a film or any other task on the site, an error will be recorded and followed up as soon as possible.

Do not hesitate to contact us if you experience odd behaviour with the website. Chances are we don't know about the problem, and if we don't know about it we can't fix it!

Ponoko

Here's a cool idea I found on trendwatching the other day:

New Zealand-based Ponoko (which works like a CafePress for 3D objects) is offering consumers a new way to turn their creative ideas into real-world objects. After uploading their own design to the website (in EPS file format), or choosing a free design, users can choose from a variety of materials. Ponoko then runs the design through a laser cutter. Besides offering access to professional tools to manufacture products, Ponoko also helps users bring their products to market. Once they’re ready to sell, members can add photos of their product to their profile page, together with a description and pricing information. Products can either be delivered to the designer for assembly before being shipped to customers, or self-assembly products can be sent directly to the end-customer. Ponoko currently only offers two-dimensional sheet cutting, which limits designs to flat objects or three-dimensional objects that can be assembled from flat pieces, but plans for 3D printing are in the works.

As well as being a manufacturing platform, Ponoko also serves as a community where fledgling one-off fabricators and designers can exchange ideas and help solve each other’s problems. The larger goal, according to Ponoko, is to be a catalyst that helps bring personal manufacturing of individualized products to the masses.

see ya

The year is coming to an end, and what a year it's been.

The highlight for me in 2007 was definitely the trip to London in August to hold the Stray Cinema screening event. It was amazing to see the digital and real worlds combine, and to celebrate the project with other human beings. Running Stray Cinema has meant i've spent a lot of time alone infront of my computer, so when something exciting happens (i.e we get a new film submission or positive feedback on the project) I often don't know what to do with myself….there is noone around to share the excitement. So the real world screening was a great opportunity to beable to celebrate the hard work everyone has put into Stray Cinema with a party.

Well I am going to take a wee break over christmas and new years. Thanks for reading my blog, and any contributions you have made to the project. Keep an eye out for a special christmas Stray Cinema film submission…anyone?

w00t w00t!

Taken from Rob's blog:

"Webster’s Dictionary word of the year is w00t, according to a report from Associated Press.

“W00t,” a hybrid of letters and numbers used by gamers as an exclamation of happiness or triumph, topped all other terms in the Springfield-based dictionary publisher’s online poll for the word that best sums up 2007.

Webster’s president, John Morse, said “w00t” was an ideal choice because it blends whimsy and new technology.

Gamers commonly substitute numbers and symbols for the letters they resemble, Morse says, creating what they call “l33t speak” - that’s “leet” when spoken, short for “elite” to the rest of the world."

Mashups are all the rage...MadLibs is one very interesting use of a mash-up site - you enter a noun, verb, adjective, name, and number to be told a Flickr photo story.

The photo above is from mine, try it yourself...
