<p>As Street Anatomy goes up against <a title="Skull-A-Day by Noah Scalin" href="http://skulladay.com">Skull-A-Day</a> in a friendly competition/co-curation of our upcoming gallery show, <a title="FACE OFF Skull-A-Day vs Street Anatomy opening Friday May 31 International Museum of Surgical Science Chicago" href="https://www.facebook.com/events/156313727874980/?fref=ts">FACE OFF—Skull Appreciation Day 2013</a>, I want to give you guys a preview of the fabulous artists that Skull-A-Day is bringing to Chicago!</p>
<h2><strong>Joshua Harker</strong></h2>
<p><a href="http://streetanatomy.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/FACEOFF_Joshua_Harker_CraniaAnatomica.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-12199" alt="FACE OFF Joshua Harker Crania Anatomica" src="http://streetanatomy.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/FACEOFF_Joshua_Harker_CraniaAnatomica.jpg" width="375" /></a></p>
<p>Chicago-based artist, sculptor, scribbler, and much more, <a title="Joshua Harker FACE OFF artist" href="http://www.joshharker.com/">Joshua Harker</a> is considered a pioneer &amp; visionary in 3D printed art &amp; sculpture. His 3D Crania Anatomica Filigre skull sculpture became the 3rd largest funded Arts project on Kickstarter back in 2011. Since then he&#8217;s been creating the unmakeable in 3D.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2>Meyoko</h2>
<p><a href="http://streetanatomy.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Meyoko_face_2.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-12205" alt="Meyoko FACE OFF artist FACE OFF Skull-A-Day vs Street Anatomy opening Friday May 31 International Museum of Surgical Science Chicago" src="http://streetanatomy.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Meyoko_face_2-550x783.jpg" width="375" /></a></p>
<p>Berlin-based Melissa Murillo, aka <a title="FACE OFF artist Meyoko" href="http://www.meyoko.com/">Meyoko</a>, creates beautifully intricate illustrations in an Art Nouveau style created entirely with a fountain pen, Black China ink and more recently Gold. &#8220;<em>Meyoko fearlessly attempts to dissect the depths of human nature itself and she does it with surgical precision</em>.&#8221;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2>Rob Tarbell</h2>
<p><a href="http://streetanatomy.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/FACEOFF_Rob_Tarbell_SKullversation_800.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-12208" alt="Rob Tarbell Skullversation FACE OFF Skull-A-Day vs Street Anatomy by Noah Scalin and Vanessa Ruiz opening May 31, 2013 International Museum of Surgical Science Chicago" src="http://streetanatomy.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/FACEOFF_Rob_Tarbell_SKullversation_800-550x550.jpg" width="375" /></a></p>
<p>Virginia-based artist <a title="Rob Tarbell FACE OFF Skull-A-Day vs Street Anatomy opening Friday May 31 International Museum of Surgical Science Chicago" href="http://robtarbell.com/">Rob Tarbell</a> creates art by capturing smoke on paper. The result is a beauty that is transcendently eerie in nature. &#8220;<em>During the process, credit cards, grocery cards, gift cards, photos, and 35mm slides of my artwork are burned to remove their growing presence in daily life, an ironic nod to a self-help technique of burning sentimental things to remove their emotional burden.</em>&#8221;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2>Mike Egan</h2>
<p><a href="http://streetanatomy.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Mike_Egan_everytimeidieithinkofyou.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-12209" alt="Mike Egan Every Time I Die I Think of You FACE OFF Skull-A-Day vs Street Anatomy by Noah Scalin and Vanessa Ruiz opening May 31, 2013 International Museum of Surgical Science Chicago" src="http://streetanatomy.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Mike_Egan_everytimeidieithinkofyou.jpg" width="375" /></a></p>
<p><a title="Mike Egan FACE OFF Skull-A-Day vs Street Anatomy opening Friday May 31 International Museum of Surgical Science Chicago" href="http://www.eganpaintings.com/">Mike Egan</a>, is a Pittsburgh based artist who has spent time working as an embalmer in funeral homes. His paintings are made using acrylic paint, shellac, wood and nails and tell stories about death, devils and saints. &#8220;<em>I&#8217;m greatly influenced by The Day of the Dead, Halloween, horror films, churches, The German Expressionists and my time in funeral homes.</em>&#8221;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2>Skulluxe</h2>
<p><a href="http://streetanatomy.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/The-80s-Are-Dead.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-12210" alt="The 80s Are Dead Dan Springer Skulluxe FACE OFF Skull-A-Day vs Street Anatomy by Noah Scalin and Vanessa Ruiz opening May 31, 2013 International Museum of Surgical Science Chicago" src="http://streetanatomy.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/The-80s-Are-Dead-550x550.jpg" width="375" /></a></p>
<p>Toronto artist, Dan Springer, aka <a title="Dan Springer Skulluxe FACE OFF Skull-A-Day vs Street Anatomy by Noah Scalin and Vanessa Ruiz opening May 31, 2013 International Museum of Surgical Science Chicago" href="http://skulluxe.blogspot.com/">Skulluxe</a>, draws <em>a lot</em> of skulls. His quirky cartoon style makes us giggle at the memento mori symbolism of the skull.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m always amazed at the amount of patience it takes to so intricately cut paper. Artist, photographer, and sculptor, <a title="Gianna Paniagua recommended by Street Anatomy" href="http://Giannapaniagua.wix.com/Gianna">Gianna Paniagua</a> is inspired by the human body and its delicateness, creating paper forms and cut outs that reflect our fragile vasculature and histology.</p>
<p>Gianna says of her work,</p>
<blockquote><p>The human body, both anatomically and metaphorically, is at the root of my work, which stems from the fact that I am a transplant recipient and have lived a life reliant on medicine.  My past and present experiences force me to see the body as fragile rather than the traditional symbol of vigor.  In my work, I place an emphasis on the physical delicate nature of the body as well as its abilities for healing. ?</p></blockquote>

<p>If you search for skulls on Society6, you&#8217;re likely to see that most of the results are from one very talented man, <a title="Ali Gulec recommended by Street Anatomy Face Off artist" href="http://www.ikiiki.co/">Ali Gulec</a>.</p>
<p>Ali is an Istanbul based photo illustrator and a prolific creator of skulls. His stylistic range takes the ubiquitous skull and turns it into something new and exciting every time. It is precisely why I chose him to be in our upcoming show, <a title="FACE OFF Skull-A-Day vs Street Anatomy May 31 International Museum of Surgical Science Chicago" href="http://streetanatomy.com/2013/05/02/face-off-skull-a-day-vs-street-anatomy-gallery-show-skull-appreciation-day-2013/">FACE OFF: Skull-A-Day vs Street Anatomy</a>!</p>

<p>Beautifully crafted jewelry created out of recycled Barbie body parts by New York based designer, <a title="Margaux Lange recommended by Street Anatomy" href="http://www.margauxlange.com/">Margaux Lange</a>. The craftsmanship looks amazing! These are definite conversation pieces, especially the doll breast necklaces and butt bracelet.</p>
<p>More about Margaux and her series:</p>
<blockquote><p>Margaux Lange’s Plastic Body Series art jewelry collection utilizes salvaged Barbie doll parts in combination with sterling silver and pigmented resins. The series is a result of Lange’s desire to re-purpose mass produced materials into handmade, wearable art. It is meant to examine and celebrate her own as well as pop culture’s relationship with the icon known simply as: Barbie.</p></blockquote>
