Fred Shafer – October 25th, 2008

Next in our Artist Interview Series is an awesome guy named Fred Shafer. About 3 weeks ago, Zeta Tau Alpha put on their annual FREEFAHL Breast Cancer Benefit concert. We were fortunate enough to have had Fred in the studio with us. While the other bands (Urban Transit, our next interview, and Blessid Union of Souls) were setting up, we were able to snag Fred for awhile. He is a totally down to earth guy, very honest and passionate about his music. Street Sounds hopes to have him back sometime.

Give the interview a listen, and enjoy his acoustic performance of Breakaway. While he was sick, he still pulled of a very heartfelt take at his song.

Bellfield – October 11th, 2008

As promised, here is one of the interviews/performances we did last weekend in the studio.

Mike and I heard that a band called Bellfield would be playing Friday night at ArtStreet Amphitheater. It wasn’t promoted very well, but luckily we heard about it. While the band was setting up, we went over and caught the bass player backstage. He said he’d forward our request for an interview to the lead singer and lead guitarist. They gladly obliged and stopped in for 20 minutes while the first band was playing.

We didn’t know what to expect. Sure enough, they blew us away. The guys from Bellfield were very down to earth, genuine and kind. We would definitely have them back anytime. I highly recommend checking them out at their MySpace. They put on an awesome live show. Very tight, good chemistry and a great sound.

Making Progress – October 6th, 2008

Only a little over a month into school and we have made quite some progress here at Street Sounds Recording Studio. We’ve talked a lot about our ideas and what we hope to do, but now we are seeing results.

To start off, the organization has grown by many members this year. In the past, we’ve usually had about 3-5 active members who contribute to Street Sounds. This year however, we’ve grown to 10+ active member currently.

We started this year with an initial meeting, laid out the ground rules and hit the ground running. The first workshops covered basics of signal flow and mic types and placement. From there we moved to the Digital aspect of recording, and introduced the crew to Digital Performer. So far, everyone seems to have a good grasp. We’ve had a good response as well to the crew coming and diving into their own recording projects.

Enough about the awesome new members, what big projects has the studio been working on? Well, first we had some literal projects. Physical studio arrangement and such. Over the summer we brought out our 24 channel Soundcraft Ghost Console to add a touch of old school sound education to the studio. We are now working with both an analog board with physical faders and knobs, as well as modern digital pre-amps and a Digital Audio Workstation.

Mike and I have also completed some other rearrangements. We added some more storage racks in the back and cleaned out the office as well. The studio has never been so organized and efficient. Adding to our new professional look is some awesome signage in and around the studio. We now record drums in Studio B, which is a much tighter and more controlled room. Since we don’t have a nice big live room, the tightness of this room is our best bet for good drums recordings. Our calendar system also works very nicely for scheduling and setting up projects.

As for actual recording, we’ve got 2 big projects this semester. I am working with UD Junior Pat McInnis on his debut 7 track EP. It’s a very interesting and fun project to work on. His music works with repetition, layering and the use many different instruments. It’s a nice change of pace from typical rock band recordings. We’re taking a very earthy and organic approach to the recording. It’s shaping up with some nice character.

I am also working with an 18 year old girl from Beavercreek, Ohio named Emily Dale. She brought her songs to me written in a tradition piano/vocal format looking to change up the style a bit. We are currently co-rewriting her songs to add another layer to them. We plan to record an 8 song EP for her.

Mike and I also had an awesome impromptu project this weekend. UD had several bands play here this weekend, and we took full advantage of it. More details will come later (as well as audio and video of in studio interview and performances), but we ended up interviewing 3 different bands. We had some great conversations and awesome live performances as well. We were lucky enough to have Bellfield, Fred Shafer and Urban Transit visit us. Stay tuned for more.

We continue to work on our own recording/mixing skills, as well as planning more events. Street Sounds will be hosting the next Thursday Night Live at ArtStreet Cafe on October 16th. We will have performances by The Cloud Machine, Kelly Fine, and more bands to be announced. A Battle of the bands is also in the works.

A New Year – September 17th, 2008

It’s a new year here at Street Sounds Recording Studio, which means many new and exciting things are underway. One goal of ours is to maintain this website more and keep it up to date with sessions, clips, artist news and other specials and events happening on behalf of the studio.

iIf you are visiting this site for the first time, you can get a good idea of who we are by go to the home page. We hope that the studio proves to be a great resource for students and musicians this year. There are already several projects underway (Pat McInnis, Emily Dale) as well as more pending. The studio will also sponsor multiple workshops this year for students eager to learn more about audio production.

We will also host the 2nd Annual One Mic Competition this year in conjunction with Flyer Radio. It was a huge success last year, and we hope to top that. A battle of the bands is also in the works with some sweet prizes.

There are more tricks up our sleeve as well, but you guys will see it all in due time. Thanks for checking in and stay tuned for more updates, seeing that much of the site is under construction. Street Sounds is doing great things this year.
