Let's be honest, we all have been gearing up for the return to Westeros for the final season of the HBO’s series Game of Thrones and if you have been keeping up over the past seven seasons, you know that winter is finally here! UK based office stationery suppliers, Viking Direct, have ramped up this anticipation in their office by crafting a freestanding giant dragon paper sculpture for their staff measuring about 43 feet long, comprised of 1,200 sheets of A4 paper!

I have been a long time fan of collage art and the many ways that you can manipulate and juxtapose paper, whether it is made from maps, layered photographs, or old school from several different sources. I finally had the pleasure of seeing the talent behind two artists that I had admired from afar in person, Alex Eckman-Lawn, and Jason Chen, at this year's Art on Paper Exhibition. Separately they have unique approaches to collage art and display, Alex utilizes a layering technique along with collage art that provides depth to each of his pieces, while Jason uses multiple photos of the same subject and weaves them together to create an illusion of displaced time. Last year, they debuted their collaborative efforts showcase entitled “Asynchronist” and now they continue to blow me away with their latest series. Enjoy!

We were all enamored by The Follett Collection from Canadian paper artist Calvin Nicholls. He now continues to create hyperrealistic wildlife that features birds, bears, and foxes rendered in relief sculpture. Despite working in monochromatic palettes of white and off-white paper, he instills a sense of liveliness and realism in these animal portraits. Hundreds of slivers of paper fan the curvature of each creature with their respective feathers and fur and the lifelike creatures are shown in a naturalistic pose—snuggled down for a rest, or wings stretched in flight.

Seoul-based studio PESI has designed a side table using planks of cardboard that have the appearance of wood. ‘PESI’, which stands for Possibility, Essential, Standpoint, Interpretation, is a design studio founded by two designers (Byounghwi Jeon, Seungjoon Song). Their creations are based on our motto: "Find new possibility by reinterpreting an object from our point of view without losing its essentials." With that, they have created the Lumber table to explore the potential of cardboard as a material for short-use furniture. The table is designed to be easily assembled and, once no longer needed, disposed of. At the same time, the designers wanted the table's aesthetic to be different from other cardboard furniture, which they said was usually folded or laminated.

It has been a while since Yulia Brodskaya's talents have graced the site and in that time she has kept busy making even more stunning quilled masterpieces that jump off of the canvas. In this particular portrait series, the focus is on various types of women, all visibly unique and powerful in their own right. In the process of refining her quilling skill set, she has created a style of quilling that mimics that of broad paint strokes. This method is achieved by packing densely folded color blocks of paper into the contours of the face and body. Each paper sculpture, whether vibrant color blocks, abstract braiding, or playing with different colors to show different textures and shading, sets her apart from other quilling artists, making each bold piece a truly fine work of art. Be sure to check out the video below!

I would like to reintroduce a very talented artist that I came across a few years back. I had the pleasure of doing an interview with him a couple of years ago and his work is nothing short of amazing! Michael Velliquette is a talented mixed media artist whose body of work spans drawing, collage, and sculpture, but he is best known for his incredibly detailed works with cut paper. These works engage the nature of matter, sensation, perception, reaction, and consciousness.

LULO is a playful design and paper goods brand based in Singapore and run by Cheryl Teo. She is a visual artist and designer that works mainly with paper and tactile design. With a knack for all things quirky and handcrafted, LULO was conceived out of her desire to share a small (but crazy) part of herself with everyone. These adorably vibrant paper sculptures give you a miniaturized glimpse into aspects of everyday life, from riding the metro, to enjoying some food for lunch, or even click clacking at the keys on your laptop.

We are already familiar with the talents of Todd Watts, a graphic designer and animator based in Melbourne, Australia. You may remember the series of manipulated books depicting his favorite stories, transformed imaginative works of art. As we fast forward to this year, he had been honing his paper design skills with the team at SNASK, where they were approached by music licensing company - Epidemic Sound to collaborate in creating a stop-motion, paper crafted animation. We all know music can make or break an animation, so they lead with a resounding HELL YEAH!

San Francisco-based artist Kanako Abe creates hand-cut, intricate paper art, that at first glance look like pen drawings. She started working with paper in 2012 when learning the Japanese art of Ise-katagami—a traditional stencil technique used for complex designs on Kimono fabric. Abe uses the same Japanese Ise-katagami cutting tools but on black paper, in addition to an X-Acto knife, a cutting mat, and—most importantly—incredible patience. The resulting hand-cut creations depict woodland animals and mystical forests that explore “everyday moments and thoughts.”

Photographer Kristoffer Marchi has created a beautiful series of unique fashion portraits with the use of minimally shaped paper sculptures. By decorating his subject with paper tubes, curved sheets, or fused origami structures, Marchi combines sculpture with both fun and drama.
