Anyone else find it offensive that the council tell us to leave our rubbish and recycling bins where the bin men choose to leave them? -ie- on our front doorsteps? I recently found a notice on my bin issuing me with these very instructions.

I can think of quite a few reasons why the bin men should exert themselves by walking a few more paces and replacing bins where we choose to put them- in a place most convenient to the resident, not to the council worker.

First, bins lying on front paths are a sure sign there's nobody at home and an invitation to burglars. The council seem unaware that this behaviour makes us vulnerable.

Then, elderly people should not have to lug these bins about after the bin men who can't be bothered to replace them properly.

Also, whose front gardens actually are they? Ours- and we should be able to say where the bins stand on our property, not be told by the council.

Next, we are paying the council extortionate council taxes for this service and they should be respectful towards the tax payers who provide their wages. Remember, they are not doing us a favour. We employ them- the council have no money except money we give them.

Finally, is the council still serving the people or we the people now serving the council?

Why can't council employees be trained to the kind of reasonable standard those in the private sector must maintain if they want to stay in business?

Sobell Centre carpark - towing cars with £400 fines!

Has anyone else had trouble in the last few weeks with the Sobell carpark? My boyfriend went in and parked when the barriers were up a couple of weeks ago, and didn't see that they had new signs up saying they've given control of the parking fines to a new company (the Sobell own the land) - he was clamped, and then when he went back to sort it out in the morning, they'd towed the car away (having said he had 28 days to pay a £80 fine) to EDMONTON where he had to go, pay £400 and pick it up, and they almost didn't give it to him because he had no ID. Which has got to be another scam since they don't ask you to bring any, and add on £35 every day the car stays there. The Sobell centre are claiming no responsibility at all even though they hadn't taken down the barriers from the previous system, and own the land these crooks are working on. £400! for a minor parking violation, in a credit crunch???? from a sports centre set up by a charity?

Any ideas on who should be written to (local MP/Haringey/Islington/British Transport/Met Police) in order to get the traffic circulation changed at Finsbury Park station? Ever since they put a taxi stand on the refurbished Station Place side of Finsbury Park, the black cabs have to either:

turn left illegally to come up Stroud Green Road, or

turn right and then make a dodgy U-turn to do it.

The legal route is to drive all the way around in a circle via Blackstock Road, Rock Street, Seven Sisters Road and then left turn back onto SGR. No one wants to pay a cab to do that!

I can understand no left turn for buses (having seen a few double decker red buses with their tops sheared off over the years), but a few cabbies have said that they have tried in vain to get a "left turn taxis only" permission there.

The mini cab in front of the station used to charge £5.50 to go "beyond Stapleton Hall Road". The black cab fare is almost always £5 or under.

Help sought.

I am looking for (and have been for a while) a chair for my spare room. I have got a small desk and at the moment sit at it on an old bentwood dining chair that turns my bum numb after a very short time.

I regularly put my head in to the various furniture places in the area (favourite being Aladdin's Cave, Hazellville Road, for sheer volume) and keep an eye on Gumtree as much as possible. No luck so far and I am sure I am missing some gems.

Inspired by Andy's success at sourcing the Independent, I thought I would see if the 'community' might be kind enough to keep an eye out and let me know if you spot anything.

In terms of style think character/shabby (cos the rest of my stuff is, more by abuse than design). In an ideal world it would be a wooden chair with arms and a leather seat.

Thanks. N4 mug for the winner?

It is not often that I walk up Stroud Green road of an evening. Living on Corbyn Street I usually go up Fonthill and onwards (and since I am now cycling to and from Paddington, its even more rare now than before). BUT, what a revelation. Where did all these people come from??

Due to a long and inglorious sequence of events I found myself locked out and in need of food and shelter until about midnight so I took a walk. There was live music in a couple of places, people eating al-fresco, lots of drinking. I thought it might be a set-up for a film. Very cool and very impressed with the busy-ness of it all. Apart from Dudley's that is, but everyone else was having a great time.

I don't suppose the girl at the cash machine outside tescos is a member here? I agree, incontinence pants shouldn't be marketed at 30yr olds. You've got ages.

For info, I went to Kebabalicious again and watched Michael Jackson videos on VH1 until "her with keys" turned up. Preferable to being billy-no-mates in a pub...

We're thinking of creating some "business memberships" for some of the local businesses (we're thinking pubs, gyms, restaurants). They'd get a dedicated page, a comment form and could post stuff on their page (eg events, promotions). It would also give them some visibility with their customers, because they could take part in discussions.

It would be cheaper and more effective than putting flyers through people's doors and we'd cover our increasing hosting costs.

But it was important we got people's views before doing it.

What do you think? Any feedback? Anyone know anybody who would want one?
