Hi-Maintenance provide installation and maintenance of tensioned fabric structures throughout the UK. I designed their initial website in 2011 shortly after the company was founded. The website has served the company well over the years, but was starting to look dated. Hi‑Maintenance approached me again last year to create a fresh, modern design.

The solution

I designed and built a bespoke WordPress theme to suit the client’s needs. The focus of the design is the photography provided by the client – it aptly showcases their services and abilities. The final web design works well on all screen sizes.

Based in Somerset, Alltree provide arboricultural advice throughout the southwest and UK. I originally designed and built their website back in 2012. It has served them well over the years, but it was time for a refresh.

The solution

A fresh, modern design was produced on the WordPress platform. The template was designed and built from scratch to provide the exact style and functionality required by the client. Alltree provided some great photos which were supplemented with some stock pics.

Bristol-based QuoteLegal provide conveyancing solutions for property professionals and home movers. They recently developed a bespoke conveyancing quote platform to help home movers, estate agents, mortgage advisors and law firms.

Following a company name change, QuoteLegal required a logo, business stationery and website. They also required UI design for their bespoke application.

The solution

A simple logo was designed, representing the letter Q and a legal document. A suite of stationery was designed, including business card, letterhead and compliment slip.

The website was designed and built with WordPress, allowing the client to access and update the web content. A video tutorial was supplied to demonstrate key tasks.

Visuals were designed for the application UI for different screen sizes.

Installing the following plugins can help keep your WordPress website safe.

WPS Hide Login Plugin

Most WordPress websites are accessible via the wp-admin.php file, such as: https://www.yourwebsite.com/wp-admin

WPS Hide Login is a lightweight plugin that simply allows you to choose an alternative URL, such as: https://www.yourwebsite.com/loginhere

The wp-admin page returns a 404 error, which makes it more difficult for hackers to use brute force entry.

Loginizer Plugin

Loginizer blocks IP addresses that try to login multiple times with incorrect passwords. You can set the number of password failures and the length of the timeout. It’s easy and effective – so much so that many WordPress hosts install it as standard.

Wordfence Security Plugin

Wordfence is a paid-for premium plugin with a limited free version. The free version is certainly worth installing before deciding whether to upgrade to the paid subscription.

Wordfence can permanently block IP addresses that try brute force logins. You can also manually blacklist IP addresses. It will periodically email you with notifications such as when a plugin needs to be updated. It also notifies you of any recently updated files.

Wordfence features a firewall to block malicious traffic. Its malware scanner checks themes, plugins and core files for code injections, malware, backdoors, bad URLs, SEO spam and malicious redirects.

It offers multiple security features and is well worth reading about in more depth here.

Keep your installation and plugins up to date

When you’re running a business, it’s easy to neglect your website for months at a time. It’s worth spending a few minutes every week to make sure your WordPress installation and plugins are up to date.

Be aware, major upgrades can (very rarely) break some of the design or functionality of your website, so it’s important to back-up the site. A great way to do this is with the All-in-One WP Migration plugin. Simply export and download a zip folder backup of your entire website.

Important: before installing any WordPress plugin, check the latest reviews and how recently it was updated. Discontinued plugins, or those that haven’t been updated recently, may pose a security risk. Only install plugins from the official WordPress website: https://wordpress.org/plugins/.

The first step in the web design process

Get in touch or complete my online enquiry form to let me know your requirements. An initial chat is all it takes for me to provide a quote. From here, a more in-depth discussion is typically required – either face-to-face or over the phone. This will help me understand your business and what you’d like to achieve with the website. At this point, I’ll provide a detailed proposal document with an accurate price for the complete job.

The website design

Once you’re happy to proceed, I’ll design an initial visual for the website homepage. You can submit feedback and I’ll revise the design until it meets your satisfaction. Once you’ve approved the homepage, I’ll produce layouts for a couple of other key pages. Again, I’ll work through your feedback revisions until you’re happy with the designs.

Coding the website

Once the design work has been completed to your approval, I’ll start to code the work in HTML / CSS and WordPress. I’ll build a complete version of the website and load it onto a test server. This will allow you to click through the entire site to check you’re happy with it before we launch.

Website launch

Once you’re approved the website, I’ll launch it to your live web address. If you don’t already have a web address and website hosting, I can help you set this up. After launch, I’ll submit a sitemap to Google – this is important; it lets Google know there’s a new website to be indexed.

Post-launch support

If you’d like to update the website content yourself, I provide a brief tutorial video and login details. If you’d like me to periodically add content and features to the website, I’m happy to quote for additional work. If you have any questions or problems with the website, I’m available to help.

How long does the complete web design and build process take?

The timescale for your website depends on a few factors such as the amount of content, pages and functionality. A straightforward website can be turned around in a couple of weeks. A more complex site may take over a month. We can discuss timescales and deadlines at the outset of the project.

What about SEO (search engine optimisation)?

Google rankings are largely dependent on the text content of your website. For example, if you wanted to rank highly for “Property management website design”, you’d write an article, page or blog post with the same title (just like this one!). You would ensure the URL (web address) has the words property-management-website-design. And you would ensure the text content has plenty of mentions of “property management” and “website design”.

However, it’s incredibly difficult to achieve good rankings for competitive phrases such as “Website Design Bristol”. If you need to score highly for a competitive phrase, I can recommend an SEO specialist. They will work with you to produce good quality text and articles. Be aware that it can take many months of hard work to get good results!

Designing the website

Building the website

This involves me coding the website with HTML / CSS and WordPress. It’s the most time-consuming part of the website design process. I’ll build a complete version of the website on a private test server. This will allow you to see the website before it goes public. You can click through and check you’re happy with everything. Once approved, it’s time for launch.

Launching the website

I’ll migrate the website over to your web-hosting package. If you don’t have a web-hosting package, don’t worry – I can help you set this up. Once the website is live, I’ll submit a sitemap to Google. This lets Google know your website is live and it will index your pages.

Website support

After launch, I provide a brief video tutorial and login details to your website. Depending on your initial requirements, you’ll be able to access your website and add/edit content. If you prefer me to make ongoing changes or add content, I can provide a flexible service with an agreed hourly rate.

How long does the website design and build process take?

The website design stage

Once you’ve agreed the proposal, I put together an initial homepage visual for your feedback. Once the homepage visual is finished to your approval, I produce visuals for a couple of other key pages. Once you’re happy with these, it’s time to move to the next stage.

The website build stage

Once the designs are approved, I build a complete test version of the website on a private server. This allows you to view the completed website before it goes live. We can iron out any bugs or problems and ensure the website functions to your satisfaction. I build all websites using WordPress (this is the most popular and supported website content management system at the time of writing).

Launch

Once you’ve approved the website, it’s time for launch. If you don’t have website hosting set up, I can recommend a supplier and package that will be suitable for your needs. As soon as the website is launched, I’ll register the sitemap with Google. This is important – it lets Google know your website is live and ready to be indexed.

After-launch support

Once the website is live, I provide login details and a brief video tutorial showing you how to access and update your website. The tutorial is individually tailored to you and your requirements. I’m always happy to answer questions over the phone going forwards. I also provide website updates and changes at an hourly rate if you need this service.
