THE INSPIRIT: From Execution, Transit to Installation. Designing and installing one of the tallest Stainless Steel Sculpture of height 48.5 ft at Jai Prakash nagar Square, Nagpur. Inaugurated by Honorable Minister Nitin Gadkari Sir & Honorable Devendra Fadnavis Sir. With immense pleasure we announce that the Sculpture was executed in an unbelievable and unattainable period of time:15 days only. With team comprising of 42 overall Sculptors, Artists, Artisans, Structural Designers, Expert Fabricators and Assistants, the Sculpture was flawlessly executed within the set deadline in Ahmedabad and installed in the Orange City, Nagpur. Nagpur, the 13th largest city in India by population, is projected to be the fifth fastest growing city in the world from 2019 to 2035 with an average growth rate of 8.41%, according to a report by Oxford Economics. The zest with which the smart city has set off on a flight to development, it has Inspirited the stake holders and emboldened their goals with life, purpose, strength, vigor and a renewed commitment towards making a better Bharat. The Inspirit is one of the iconic Project for G20 summit, Nagpur which was attended by the delegates from 20 countries.

Parchhayi - 2 An exhibition of Sculptures by Asish Kumar Das

The solo show ‘Parchhayi - 2’ i.e. ‘Shadow-2” by senior artist Asish Kumar Das was held at Hutheesing Art Gallery, Ahmedabad from 7^th to 11^th Feb 2014.

The artist plays with the overarching theme of ‘duality’: man and his shadow, man imprisoned by time, man and his dreams, man at peace with himself and the dynamics between the male and the female. The merging of the man with objects such as a wall clock, bed and wings along with surface motifs such as leaves seems to give a sense of enchantment and other worldliness.

The sculptures are primarily made of wood and brass: the rawness of wood complimenting the gloss of brass. The antique look of the sculptures is further enhanced by delicate gold inlay work in some of the sculptures.

In the classic tradition of Indian iconography, the body of the male too is graceful and supple. The sculptures are rooted in Indian tradition in terms of their iconography and use of materials and yet are very contemporary in expression.

The use of positive and negative spaces, the horizontal and vertical planes and the overlapping or merging of objects with the human form create interesting multi dimensional perspectives. One of the most interesting aspects of the exhibition is the use of tangible human forms and objects to capture the state of mind and being of people in modern times…

Terracotta Constulation - A Solo Show by Gagan Dadhich

A solo art exhibition by artist Dr.Gagan Dadhich was held at Amdavad ni Gufa from 25th to 29th December 2013.

Dr. Dadhich’s artworks change the meaning of terracotta from a poor man’s material of less worth to an earthy, sensuous, material full of plasticity and possibilities. The artworks mounted on brightly colored silk textile pieces reminds of the rich heritage of Rajasthan – embedding the art in the local milieu. Another interesting aspect of his work is the use of subtle natural colors on the terracotta surface- a technique which he picked up while attending an artist residence program in France.

Dr. Dadhich found his medium of expression while working with artisans in Mollela, Rajasthan and has continued to pursue his passion in this medium since then. Some of his works are inspired by traditional tribal votive craft – full of signs and symbolic meaning.

However it were the pieces inspired by day to day ordinary products such as pots and pans which were striking. The plastic nature of the medium was brought alive through a minimal approach. The slight distortions, textures, angles and cavities formed during the making of the piece get hardened during the firing reminding us of the basic elements: the earth, water, fire and air. The memory of the movement of fingers on the clay during the making process is also preserved through the same hardening process of terracotta constantly reminding of the close relationship between the artist and the artwork. In fact, Dr.Dadhich likes to describe himself as a Kumhar, a potter.

The feel of terracotta continued as we drank from kulhars, cups made from terracotta and ate from big loaves of rough, textured Indian bread placed on terracotta pans which seemed to be so well integrated with the entire feel of the exhibition : subtle, earthy and comforting in a rough, rustic manner.

Art Affair - 2013

An art exhibition named “Art affair’ is being held at The Gallery – Amdavad ni Gufa from 31st Dec to 5th Jan 2014. The exhibition showcases the work of 60 contemporary artists including the work of senior artists such as Amit Ambalal, Vrindavan Solanki and Haku Shah. One of the key features of the exhibition is the portrayal of the artwork in black and white in a uniform space of one square foot canvas.

The limitations of space and the absence of colour seems to have induced interesting explorations in texture, form, tonality and meaning. Harshil Patel has interpreted the colour black as lord shani and has used mix media to create the feel of the same through the symbolic use of various elements including lamp and nava grahas. Childhood memories of crossing the bridge near his village near Mathura and the stories of his ancestors having migrated to the green spaces of lonawada have inspired Jamil Ahmed Khan to create his artwork, which stands out for both its symmetry and innocence.

The abstract depiction of the organic spiral form by Arpit Biloria is seen to have depth, delicacy and dynamism in the way the black form fluidly grows in white space and vice versa, striking in its use of space and the way the form seems to flow beyond the boundaries of the one square foot canvas.

Ronal Sopariwala has made interesting use of charcoal and charcoal dust to create tonalities in abstract forms of cotton wool to depict the world of black and white through the language of materials. The creative use of thread and textile to create texture and form is seen in some of the works including that of Radhika Dave who has a humorous take on black dogs climbing and falling on spaces created by embroidered threads in her artwork

Although many of the artworks have taken an illustrative approach and converted colour imagery to black and white some of the work stands out such as Ravin Godhani who has depicted old city spaces in rounded contours of highly contrasting black and white, intermingling the feeling of narrowness and cozy environment of the spaces and Kailash Desai whose landscapes reminds us of nights and the mystery surrounding the same. Rakesh Patel seems to interpret the absence of colour with sorrow and depicts crying children in his artwork.

Amit Ambalal’s work depicting the deer jumping over the tiger is striking: the tiger a horizontal blob of greys, minimal in its depiction and strong in its imagery somewhat like the paintings of old Chinese masters. In essence it is this minimalist approach of using only black and white which seems to have provoked a majority of artists to go beyond their own conventions to come up with interesting work exploring multiple dimensions!

Screening of Short Films by Sriram Dalton

Sriram Dalton, an artist, writer, director was invited to screen some of his films at Amdavad ni Gufa @ 6 pm on 21^st Dec 2013 by Arpit Biloria of ‘Studio Verve’. Sriram honed his film making skills through working in Bollywood and assisting noted cinematographer Ashok Mehta in commercial cinema such as ‘No entry’. However, his own take on cinema as a means of expression is unique and has a style of his own.

The screening commenced with the short film ‘The lost Behrupiya’ which was inspired by the nostalgia of rich traditions remembered from childhood times but fast disappearing in this busy world. The film’s take on the tradition of Behrupiya is interesting as it shies away from the overt use of voice over and dialogues; instead using audio-visual means to express the essence and pain of this tradition in a metaphorical, poetic manner. The classical rendition in the background and the evocative use of silence complement the strong visual imagery of the film.

The next short film screened: ‘OP stop smelling Ur socks’ stars actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the main role long before he became famous. The film portrays black humor and is a take on the inner world of the common man and the psychological dimensions of group dynamics controlled by position and power. Shifting between dream and reality the film attempts to capture hidden dimensions and raises questions rather than attempting to give solutions.

The one minute ad film promotes the serious theme of tree plantation in a light evocative manner. The current film being made by Sriram is based on the 14000 kms road journey he has undergone in the last 3 months with his friend, artist-poet Pramod Kumar. The film is about the journey with a love story connecting the same. The first look of the film was screened: the horse as a metaphor, the road journey and the stunning music creates a curiosity and expectation!

All his films have a poetic approach and a strong style of his own– exploring spaces between reality and inner worlds, strong imagery, using rich sounds as a means of expression rather than relegating them to the background and the use of metaphors. In the interaction session with the film maker, he also acknowledged the contribution of his friend, artist-poet Pramod Kumar in developing the idea of the film and his wife Megha Sriram Dalton for the sound design and music of his films.

World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic victims

Studio Verve was invited to create a public art installation for the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic victims (WDR) which is observed on the third Sunday of November each year. This day is dedicated to remembering both the victims of road accidents as well as the police, medical professionals etc. who daily deal with road injuries and deaths.

Since many of the accidents could have been prevented, the emphasis is on creating public awareness to road safety norms and the dangers of driving irresponsibly.

The venue to create the public art installation was decided as the Paldi bus stop which is a centrally located area in Ahmedabad with a large number of people driving past the same. Keeping in mind the theme of creating public awareness an installation was conceptualized & executed by Mr. Gautam Patel, Arpit Biloria & Lalon (Abhijit Paul) along with artists: Mukund Pate, Lalit Garg, Kautilya Vyas, Rokesh Kumar Singh, Mayank Sharma, Sunil Nimawat & Sachin Dadhich within a short time frame.

The visual impact of crushed vehicles in accidents is enormous and is a reminder to people to drive carefully. Considering this factor, crushed, distorted two wheelers and four wheelers were assembled. These vehicles were composed in an interesting manner using cranes on the bus stop roof space to create better visibility and exaggerate the impact.

The installation was executed at night to create a curiosity and buzz from early morning onwards on the WDR. The use of crushed, distorted vehicles as an indirect reminder of the frailty of human body and the need for road safety was well received.

XI Strokes – Eleven Different Colours

The exhibition ‘XI Strokes – eleven different colours’ depicts the work of eleven artists and was inaugurated on 26^th Nov 2013 in ‘The gallery’ , Ahmedabad. Apart from fibre work in 3D, the exhibition consists of paintings in various media. Ajay Mistri’s colourful take on human forms through bold paintings on 3d fibre and Sandeep Suneriya’s humorous take in his etching work were interesting. The highly realistic works of Dinesh Shrimali and Suresh Rawal depicting day to day life as well as the surrealistic paintings of Mukund Patel and Kalpesh Patel are appreciable for the highly skilled detailed depiction. Overall, there is a certain freshness to the work dominated by traditional ways of painting and an underlying tension in trying to break through to new ways of expressions.

‘Unconditional love’ An Art Exhibition

The exhibition titled ‘Unconditional love’ is showcasing the work of 13 artists from Studio A simultanoulsy both at The Gallery and at Hutheesing visual art center, Ahmedabad. A majority of artists have done their initial studies at C.N. fine arts and some of them had continued their studies at MS University, Baroda and London university.

One of the facets of the exhibition at ‘The Gallery’ is the exploration of new technique by the artists as a way of expressing themselves. Harshid Patel has experimented with the painting of architectural motifs on gold and silver leaf background. Roma Patel has worked with acrylic – bringing the fluid forms created by acrylic paint on glass onto canvas to get interesting abstract forms. Alpesh Dave experiments with threadwork on human faces – his work with Picasso is especially interesting for the humor it recreates. Bhavin Vaishnav has explored the same form of a boy figure in different media from carved wood to sketches.

The juxtaposition of contrasting images often in relation to the human body are seen in many artworks : among them Kumar’s work ‘peace of mind’ in which the juxtaposition of human face with rockets are seen. The same approach is further seen in sculpture in Chowhan’s juxtaposition of nails on human lips. By juxtaposing the child’s image with objects related to his work Rakesh Patel has tried to bring in the narrative of working children into his artwork.

The art work collection of Sonal Ambani including the works of senior artists such as Nabibaksh Mansuri and Mahendrabhai Kadia as well as Sonal Ambani’s owm work on ‘World peace’ is displayed at ‘Huthessing visual art gallery’.

"Full wall empty 27” by German artist Werner Degreif

A solo exhibition ‘Full wall empty 27” by German artist Werner Degreif is being held at ‘The Gallery, Amdavad ni gufa’ , Ahmedabad from 15^th to 20^th October. This exhibition is the fourth of a series of exhibition being held by Zone of Contemporary art, ZOCA.

Werner Degreif has multiple talents as a musician, graphic artist and sculptor and currently stays in Mannheim, Germany. Having spent seven weeks as an artist in residence in Ahmedabad, India, Werner Degreif took 2 weeks imbibing the culture of the place before embarking on his artwork.

In his own words “ My father was an architect and maybe, I might have imbibed some of the sense of architecture from him” and so it seems as we look at how spaces depicting the character of Ahmedabad come alive within the close confines of the gallery. He specialized in site specific work which imparts a certain amount of fluidity and poignancy to the work. The challenge of the space in the gallery was its length but the artist managed to find a creative solution to the linear space by arranging his work in a perspective form overlapping each other, unifying the work without creating division; keeping us unaware of the transition of frames and helping us experience an unified whole.

“It seems the lines of your artwork done in Germany is more orderly, neat and emphasis seems to be on architectural elements rather than people… How has India influenced your artwork?” we asked to which he replied ”In Germany, it was difficult to draw people because of their reluctance to be portrayed and it was a pleasant surprise to find people in Ahmedabad greeting me with openness and joy while being portrayed.” And the same sense of calmness and joy pervades in the work too..

The inspiration for most of the artwork seemed to be from the city slums. More exposure to the city with its complexities encompassing the tradition and the modern, the poor and the rich, the indoor and the outdoor, the private and the public spaces could have broadened the canvas of the artwork. However, the raw energy of the lines and the focus on the portrayal of common people from city slums going about their day to day lives by itself bring forth an element of extraordinary to the daily everyday sights of the city!

Purvaa 2013 - A Group exhibition of Paintings & Sculptures

The works of 35 artists based in Ahmedabad and Baroda is being exhibited as ‘Purvaa 2013’ from 18^th to 20^th October 2013 at LP Hutheesing visual art centre in Ahmedabad as part of a unique tribute to late Purvesh Patel by his friend Aditya Vikram. The 45 artworks exhibited include paintings, etching, lithography, paper cutting, mixed media as well as interactive exhibits and sculptures in various media.

Surrealistic images of human faces juxtaposed with a variety of images including merry go rounds, landscapes, mobiles etc. depicting the various moods and thoughts in human beings were found in the work of many artists. The dominant theme in the artwork including paintings, graphic art as well as sculpture seemed to be the troubles, constraints and difficulties faced by human beings in the modern world and the meeting space between humans and the man made world. This included the works of Nemaram Jangid’s ‘Control of tension’ , ‘Struggle and risk’ and Purvi Parmar’s ‘Freedom’.

Various experimental artwork using unusual mediums such as backlit acrylic with LED lights as well as the use of chrome plated metal and coins on paintings seemed to resolutely trying to break away from the constraints of two dimensional medium of painting and graphic art. Experimental artworks also included the interactive artwork of David titled ‘girl with the gun’ in which the viewer became the participant by pumping air and finding the girl raising a rubber gun at the viewer.

Some of the other interesting work included the artwork ‘Train’ by Sandeep Suneriya which though simple in form was conceptually unusual in depicting two narratives within the 6 frame structure and the abstract work of Arpit Biloria ‘Intersectional void’ which celebrated the abstract beauty and raw juxtaposition of forms, leaving the work open for interpretation by viewers.

The College Festival was held on 7, 8 & 9th of February. Studioverve was invited to conduct a workshop for the Architecture students.

The Festival was called 'Antiquity' this year

the term means :An object, building or work of art from the ancient past. Hence the focus was on learning an older form of traditional art.

Anastasia Alexandrin and Deviba Wala, who gave the lecture and presentation on Warli.

Students were told about the origin, significance, techniques as well as modern day variants and use of this ancient art.

Warli paintings are an adivasi or tribal art form belonging to the Gujarat and Maharashtra region.

These paintings are simple yet unique and were used to adorn walls with images of everyday life.

they are done with 'geru' and rice paste.

The exhibition titled titled ‘Woodpecker @ plot # C /12’ is an exploration of space in the natural surrounding quite different from Mumbai where he lives and works.
His works now takes a turn to a newer fresh perspective quite different from his earlier work that focused on mechanisms. This series incorporates the surrounding nature as an important component of his work. We are a part of nature yet so separated from it.
his work ‘woodpecker and four corners of the glass’ attempts to diverge from his previous work and reflects what his experience here has been. He awoke on the first day to the sound of a woodpecker outside his window, a bird he encountered so closely for the first time he was fascinated also by the preciseness of the round hole that the bird had pecked away at the wood to create a hollow for it’s home.
The installations and sculptures. by Ritesh meshram give us an opportunity to delve into his understanding of subject and unique methodology: to view an object,to dream up its use, to deliberately place them a certain way. There is no one single way to interpret his what his work is.. it does entice all who look and creates a desire to interact with and think of possibilities.
It is interesting to see the choice of technique and works in relation to each other. The subject matter often gets attention, here the material is as important.

Artist in Residence from Brooklyn NY, USA

Carol began a body of work based on furthering her exploration of shapes, color, texture, and singularity versus compression using both painting as well as textiles as her mediums. During her residency here in Ahmedabad she Expanded on her past work and focused on the forms of cells and started to incorporate the idea of islands both as places and as feelings.

In the past, I have been exploring the shapes and relationships of intersecting cellular shapes. The way in which they can be pressed and forced into each other as well as then the space left around them when in solitude as a point of comparison.

I have used these two weeks in residency to begin investigating the notion of islands as a jumping off point from previous work and their relationship to the cellular in shape and theory of isolation. It has also been a time to feel free to explore the use of color, infuse more emotion into the act of painting as well as the results, and to capture an idea and feeling with the paint.

After focusing on a certain density I am beginning to look for more spaciousness and freedom.

Terracotta & Pottery Workshop

An exciting journey into the world of Clay… 3 days of Fun, Laughter, Excitement and Work !

The pure aesthetic quality and earthy feel of pottery and ceramics make it a fascinating subject.

Studio Verve recently organized a Workshop at the Artist Residency premises to promote this art form and enable those who have an interest to be able to learn. The workshop was conducted by Nehal Rachh: A ceramist par excellence. She has been to residencies in France and The U.k. Had various group exhibitions and solo shows and has been conducting workshops. She is from Baroda where she has her Studio.

The Participants enthusiasm was contagious. Fun, Laughter, Excitement and Work was how the day would pass. We saw everybody’s creative side emerge and we did have to drag everyone away from their working table for the lunch break. The work that was made during this period is a work in progress; the firing will take place once the works dry out.

The workshop was an introduction to the subject and dealt with the basics, everything from de-airing to shaping and hand building with coils and pinching techniques to using the potter’s wheel.

I have been extremely interested in pottery since the time i was a little girl. I would gape wide eyed at the potter as he magically conjured up various pots and vessels by just gliding his hands over the clay. The lump of clay would suddenly come alive and move and he would use a stick to spin his wheel and it would turn and turn and turn and make a creaking sound that was music to my ears. I would be ‘lost’ for hours and the village potter’s hut was my favorite hangout, my mother often had to send someone to drag me back home. All these years have passed but the fascination has never waned. I do manage now to work the wheel and throw a slightly wobbly bowl occasionally.

Clay items were first made nine thousand years ago and are usually all the artistic evidence left at the sites of ancient civilizations. All developed cultures made pots from clay. The word "ceramics" comes from the Greek keramikos meaning "pottery", or keramos meaning "potter's clay." Clay is most commonly used to make containers such as bowls, vases, pots, figurines, roof tiles & Bricks. as well as sculpture. Objects were made from the “earth” - raw clay found naturally in creek beds and wet areas. The first clay sculptures were dried / baked in the sun after being formed. Later, they were placed in the ashes of open hearths to harden, and finally kilns were used, similar to those used for pottery today. Once the piece is dry it is fired in a kiln where the process hardens it as it lets out more of the water content. Then the glaze is applied and the piece re-fired to create a finished smooth surface. It is one of the oldest human technologies and art-forms and remains a major industry today.

Pottery objects are used either purely for decoration, as art pieces or simply for functional purposes. The medium is flexible. Contemporary artists today use shape and colour as well as various methods of decoration by painting, carving and glazing to achieve desired results. There are many types of clay like Earthenware, Red earthenware or red clay, white and buff colored earthenware, stoneware and includes Bone china, porcelains.. the only limit is Imagination.

As compared to other mediums in sculpture, terracotta uses a far simpler process for creating the finished work with much lower material costs and is is far lighter and easy to transport.

Design Flea is a joint initiative by Artisan’s Cottage and Nine Lives to showcase the work of young and talented designers from across the country. As a part of the two day event from the 21st to the 22nd of Sep there are 32 designers participating from across the country and they are showcasing everything from art to artefacts, textiles, home, accessories, lifestyle products, fashion etc.

Artisan’s Cottage was founded by Harita Kapur in September 2011. Harita is a NIFT graduate and has her own design label which was founded in 2004. It was her dream to create a very special store that reflects indian design heritage and to cater to a niche market for contemporary lifestyle products that led to the opening of Artisan’s Cottage.
The store’s objective is to support craft based work from various designers, organizations and artisans from across the country with one mission, to help the craft community.

Nine Lives is an initiative by Rachita Parekh, a graduate from the University of California, Berkeley. Having the experience of running her own lifestyle store in Delhi, when she moved to Ahmedabad she started her own venture with the aim of spreading design by promoting designers from the field of fashion, lifestyle and art and providing them a platform to showcase their work.
She has organized many successful exhibitions in the past, the last one being ‘ Synergy of Opposites’ in association with Gramshree where they achieved tremendous success and raised remarkable funds for the NGO .

Reshaping the Artist Residency !

Renovation work in progress at the Artist Residency...

The StudioVerve artist residency has been operational at Greenwoods city since last winter, when we had a few Indian and International artists. We are now getting ready to welcome the artists who'll be here this winter and have began renovations of the premises. It's quite a lot of fun because we're doing most of the work ourselves. Being monsoon it was the perfect season to plant a few of our favorite plants and trees ranging from Champa, Karan, Jasud, Asopalav, Gulmohar, Silver Oak, Money plant, Philodendron, Tulsi etc etc... it's a visual feast getting away from the chaos of the city and looking at all the green !

Joël is a film maker and an avid traveller,

He recently travelled the " silk route " to make a documentary film.

It was the trade route that was used to transport mainly silk and spices as well as medicine, jewels and other goods. This route was important for the early development in China, India and went all the way to Persia and Ancient Rome.

Chloe is an Artist.

We had a good time indeed .. talking about out sculptures and paintings and showing them around the place. It was a pleasure indeed to have them over and nice to have a good conversation( in a mix of three different languages ).

Concept Note :

Take a look around you – you’re surrounded by technology. Every aspect of our lives, the way we eat, travel, communicate and entertain ourselves are all determined by constantly “advancing” technology. In our modern world of mass production and consumption these technological objects come pre packaged with a stereotyped usage, leaving little room for creative innovation on a personal level.

These latest works have been heavily influenced by my time in India. The colors, sounds and energy of this country have influenced my attempts to create a more meaningful interaction between viewer and technology ; a creative relationship that moves beyond pure materialistic consumption.

he gets the effect he desires.
