What is Soil?

A dynamic natural body composed of mineral and organic solids, gases, liquids and living organisms which can serve as a medium for plant growth.
(or)
Upper unconsolidated earth crust composed of minerals and organic solids which can support to the plant growth.

Composition of Soil:

Soil is composed of 25 % air, 25 % water, ≈ 49 % minerals and ≈ 1 % organic matter

Importance of Soil:

Soil provides us food, fiber and shelter
It is a medium for plant growth

What is Soil Science?

It is a scientific discipline that deals with the study of soil as a natural resource for plant growth.

Branches of Soil Science:

Soil Genesis: It is the branch of Soil Science that deals with weathering of rocks and minerals and factors and processes of soil formation.

Soil Classification: It is the branch of Soil Science that deals with the systematic arrangement of soils into groups or categories on the basis of their characteristics.

Soil Survey: It is the branch of Soil Science that deals with the systematic examination of soil in the field and laboratory, their description, classification, mapping, and interpretation according to their suitability for different management systems.

Soil Physics: It is the branch of Soil Science that deals with the mechanical behavior of soil mass, the physical properties of soil, with emphasis on the state and transport of matter (especially water) and energy in the soil.

Soil Chemistry: It is the branch of Soil Science that deals with the chemical constitution, chemical properties, and chemical processes taking place in the soil.

Soil Biology: It is the branch of Soil Science that deals with soil inhabiting organisms, their function and activities.

Soil Fertility: It is the branch of Soil Science that deals with the ability of a soil to supply the essential plant nutrients for plant growth.

Soil Salinity: It is the branch of Soil Science that deals with the excess soluble salts present in the soil, their reclamation, and soil management for saline agriculture.

Soil mineralogy: It is the branch of Soil Science that deals with the primary soil minerals and their contribution to the chemistry, physics, fertility, and biology of soils and their relationship to soil genesis.

Soil Conservation: It is the branch of Soil Science that deals with the protection of soil from physical loss by erosion (by wind and water) or chemical deterioration.

Physical properties of soil:

Soil texture, Soil Structure, Soil Density (Bulk density & Particle density), Soil Porosity, Soil Consistence, Soil Color, Soil Temperature etc.

1) Soil Texture:

It is defined as the relative proportion of sand, silt and clay in the soil (soil particles).

Size limits of soil separates, soil particles (Sand, Silt, Clay)

Soil texture is determined in the laboratory by Bouyoucus Hydrometer method and feel method in the field.

Use of Textural Triangle to name textural class of the soil.

Textural Classes: Sandy loam, Loam, Silt loam, Clay loam etc.

Importance of soil texture: Plant type, plant growth, nutrients availability, buildings, land use and management etc.

2 ) Soil Structure:

It is the arrangement and grouping of soil particles (Sand, Silt, Clay) in the soil.

Soil Formation: Soils are formed by the weathering of rocks and minerals.

Weathering: It is the process of disintegration and decomposition of rocks and minerals to more stable forms under atmospheric conditions. It transforms the original rock (parent rock) into parent material.

Rock: It is a natural aggregate of one or more minerals to form an appreciable part of the solid portion of the earth.

Mineral: It is a naturally occurring, inorganic, crystalline substance with a definite chemical composition and physical properties.

Examples: Quartz, Feldspars, Pyroxenes, Amphibole, Olivine, Mica, Apatite, Carbonates, Dolomite, Gypsum, Pyrite etc. (groups of minerals)

About 2000 minerals have been identified in the soil.

Types of minerals:

a) - Primary minerals: They are formed from the rocks by weathering.

b) - Secondary minerals: They are formed from the primary minerals by weathering.

Types of Weathering:

Geochemical Weathering: It takes place below the soil solum.
Pedochemical Weathering: It takes place in the soil solum.

Processes of Weathering:

1- Physical Weathering: It is a process whereby rocks and minerals are cracked, crumbled, crushed and mellowed. The result is a material that varies in size from boulders to very fine particles with no appreciable change in chemical or mineralogical composition. The forces responsible for physical weathering are expansion, contraction, pressure, temperature and grinding etc.

2- Chemical Weathering: It involves processes that alter rocks and minerals that are stable at the given temperature and pressure at the surface of the earth. These processes are hydrolysis, oxidation, reduction, carbonation and hydration etc.

3- Biotic/ Biological Weathering: It can be defined as physical and chemical weathering by biological agents. The breakdown of the rocks and minerals is accelerated by plants, animals and microorganisms.

All these weathering processes work together to form soil.

Types of Rocks:

1- Igneous Rocks: They are formed by the solidification of molten material called magma, which originates at considerable depth beneath the earth’s surface.

Examples: Granite, Basalt, Diorite, Andesite and Gabbro etc.

Magma: It is a natural, moldable, hot melt composed of rock forming materials and some volatiles that are held in solution by pressure.

2- Sedimentary Rocks: They are composed of particles derived from previously existing igneous rock by physical alteration.

Examples: Gypsum, Dolomite, Lime stone and Sand stone etc.

3- Metamorphic Rock: They are derived from pre-existing igneous or sedimentary rocks by chemical alteration.

Examples: Marble, Slate, Quartzite and Phyllite etc.

The relative abundance of these rocks in the earth crust is:

Igneous- 64.7 %, Metamorphic- 27.4 %, Sedimentary- 7.9 %

Factors of soil formation:

S = F (Cl, O, R, P, T) where

Cl (Climate), O (Organisms), R (Relief, Topography), P (Parent material), T (Time)

Climate and organisms are considered as active factors, while parent material, topography and time are considered as passive factors.

Parent material:

It refers to the consolidated or un-consolidated initial material from which soil develops.

Rock - Parent material - Soil

Types of soil parent materials:

1- Colluvium, deposited by the action of gravity.

2- Alluvium, deposited by the action of water, Lacustrine (lake/ river), Glacial drifts (glaciers)

3- Aeoline, deposited by the action of wind, Loess (silt size particles, in Potohar), Sand dunes (sand size particles, in Thal and Thar) .

Rate of soil formation:

A- Horizon = 1-20 years/ cm

A plus B- Horizon = 40-100 years/ cm

Complete weathering in the solum = 100-125 years/ cm

Government of Punjab Pakistan has decided to broader the Counter Terrorism department in Anti terrorism point of view to overcome the terrorism. Every Pakistani male or female can apply if he/she fulfill the requirements given below.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

The candidates must hold Degree of B.A/B.Sc/B.Cs/ or any equivalent degree from any HEC Recognized institute with at least second division.
Age Limits:18-25 years
Domicile: Only Punjab Domiciled Candidates can apply
Running 1 mile: (in 8 minutes for male) (in 14 minutes for female)
Least Physical body Measure requirements:
Height:(5 feet 7 inch for male) 5 feet 2 inch for female)
Chest: 33-34 inches
Average weight: must be in according to age and height
Must be fit medically
Eye Sight:
Afar sight :6/6
Near sight: normal
(Only for male Candidates)

OTHER TERMS AND CONDITIONS:

1.	Evaluation of Skills/Abilities of Candidates will be on their physical test, mental tests, written exam and on interview basis.

University of Agriculture Faisalabad has announced 1st Merit List of Undergraduate (Winter Session 2013-2014).

Note:The admission of candidates (up to 22-10-2013) will however, be subject to following conditions and completion of admission/enrollment formalities as detailed below:

They will themselves get medical examination from the University Medical Officer and obtain medical fitness certificate on the proper format.
If hostel accommodation is required, obtain hostel availability certificate from the Office of the Hall Warden located in Babar Hall.
Deposit an amount of Rs. 40,850/- for Boarder and Rs. 30,250/- for non-Boarder (after F.Sc. Pre-Medical) and Rs. 31,250/- for Boarder and Rs. 22,650/- for non-Boarder (after F.Sc. Pre-Agriculture) as fee on proper challan form into any Branch of National Bank of Pakistan at University of Agriculture, up to 22-10-2013
Submit following documents to this office up to said date for completion of other admission/enrollments formalities, failing which their provisional admission shall stand cancelled and they shall have no claim whatsoever:-
1. Medical Fitness and Hostel Availability Certificate
2. Original Bank Challan showing payment of above dues
3. Original educational/revenue documents for scrutiny and the missing documents indicated against their names.
4. Prescribed courses enlistment form (UG-I) complete in all respects.
5. Prescribed Registration form along with attested copies of Matric F.Sc. and CNIC/B Form
6. Affidavit/undertaking on judicial paper worth Rs. 100/- as per specimen displayed on the Notice Board for desisting themselves from indulgence in ‘Politics’ during their study period in the light of orders of the August Supreme Court of Pakistan.
Those who have been indicated as overage in the remarks column should contact the Office of the undersigned immediately for submission of proper request for onward consideration by the competent authority.
The candidates, who have submitted detail marks/result intimation of Matric and Intermediate examination along with admission application form, should produce attested copies of prescribed certificate immediately on receipt from the Board, failing which they can be restrained to continue further studies/cancel their admission.
In case any information/document attached with the application form is found bogus/tampered /fabricated etc. at any stage of studies, the admission will be cancelled retrospectively without assigning any reason.
Errors and omissions, if any, in this notification are excepted.

CULTURAL EXCHANGE SCHOLARSHIPS PROGRAMME FOR YEAR 2014

The Ministry of Inter Provincial Coordination (IPC) has assigned the task of conducting the GRE(Local) Subject wise test to the National Testing Service (NTS) for the subject scholarships.

Applications are invited for study abroad under the Cultural Exchange Scholarships Programme for the year 2014 for Master's and Ph.D studies in various subjects.The scholarships are expected from China, Turkey, Romania, Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Mexico, Greece, Russia, South Korea and Italy.These scholarships are Fully Funded as the donor countries provide tuition fee,accomodation and monthly living allowance, which varies from country to country.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

The candidates must have completed Sixteen Years Education that is MA / MSc OR must hold four (04)years B.Sc (Hons) Agriculture, B.Sc (Engg), BCS (Hons), MBBS in the relevant field.

OTHER TERMS AND CONDITIONS:

1.	Maximum age limit is 35 years on the closing date of applications.
2.	Applicants having more than one second division in their academic career are not eligible to apply.
3.	Attested copies of each supporting document (Matric to onward) including domicile certificate, must be sent with the application. The professional degree holders B.Sc Engg / MBBS, B.Sc(Hons) Agriculture should submit detailed marks certificate of each year.

1. Before writing starts

=> Follow these Proposal Development Phase:

Develop an idea
Write an abstract
Get advice from expert
Gather information on topic
Gather information on research programme
Adapt your ideas to the relevant programme
Take advice from funding institution
Look out for partners
Fix partners and their roles
Write the scientific part of your proposal
Submit proposal

(GRADUATE ASSESSMENT TEST)

What is GAT?

GAT is an aptitude test administered by NTS. GAT is conducted every three months. GAT score remains valid for TWO years. Once you qualify GAT you can apply to any university of Pakistan for MS, M. Phil., or PhD class on the basis of the score in GAT.

Why it is Require?

Most of Pakistani students recognize GAT as GRE.
GAT is a test by NTS - National Testing Service Pakistan. GAT provides a mean to select an applicant for higher studies (M.Phil., PhD) for universities.

GAT General Test is basically consist of three types of questions...

English
Quantitative
Analytical

GAT General Test falls into three categories

GAT A
GAT B
GAT C

In the above three types the difference is only of the ratio of the three types of questions. Moreover the selection among GAT A, GAT B and GAT C is done by major subjects which the test taker had studied.

Information:

GAT Genral Local test Book recommended by National testing Service for preparation of GAT Genral Paper for all students of Universities who wants to get Admissions in M.phil/M.sc (hons).

NTS has only one publication regarding GAT test. Sole distributor for that is Dogar Brothers. NTS has no other publication regarding GAT.
