For the last year or so, we've been telling you about educational and research partnerships resulting form our Academic Cloud Computing Initiative. We've shared educational material resulting from our extensive partnership with the University of Washington and partnered with the National Science Foundation to directly engage the research community and provide access to a large scale, data intensive computing cluster.

Why? Because big data is cool; it drives nearly everything we do here at Google and provides unprecedented opportunities for understanding science in new ways. It's been an exciting year learning how to work with the academic community in this space, and we'd like to start sharing that with other passionate educators.

To that end, we've worked with our academic partners to offer a two and a half day NSF-sponsored workshop, hosted at UW, which will focus on providing material and curricular support to undergraduate computer science educators seeking to address big data in the classroom. This will largely focus on material that can be found on Google Code University, but will include practical lab components so educators can get their hands dirty with the open source platforms and the tools necessary to offer a class.

Interested faculty should feel free to apply for attendance here. The NSF has provided support to cover expenses for those selected to attend.

New Beta Feature: Video Annotations

We're happy to announce a new way to add interactive commentary to your videos -- with Video Annotations. With this feature, you can add background information, create branching ("choose your own adventure" style) stories or add links to any YouTube video, channel, or search results page -- at any point in your video.

Uploaders have control over creating and editing an unlimited number of annotations on their videos. To start annotating, first make sure you have videos uploaded into your account. Log in, then go to view one of your videos. On the Video page, click the blue "Edit Annotations" button to the right of the video.

As you play your video, you can insert commentary by adding speech bubbles, notes and highlight boxes anywhere you want. You can also use the menu on the left to save a draft, delete commentary, edit start/stop times or add links to your annotations. Once you save the final version, click "Publish" to reveal your annotated video to other users. (Note: Video Annotations are shown by default, but the viewer can turn them off while watching a video through the "Menu" button on the bottom right of the video player).

Google assures us Android-powered Gphone is coming this year

Though we’ve seen a bunch of video demos in the past that show us just what Google’s Android platform can do, its official release date doesn’t feel like its anywhere near. However, a Google spokesperson says that they are “still on track to announce Android-powered phones this year.”

The same also mentions, “Some of our partners are publicly stating that they plan to ship Android phones in the fourth quarter.”

If you think about it, this actually makes sense, since Android doesn’t really need the “Google phone” in order for it to come out to market. We’ve already seen proof that Android can run on devices other than the Gphone, and in fact it should run on any open, generic handset that permits an OS.

What’s not clear, though, is whether Android will really even come out in a so-called Gphone, and if so, how different would the experience in that be from using Android in other manufacturer’s devices.

With the second-gen Apple iPhone’s supposed launch date drawing near, it would only help Google in their mobile phone market venture to release during the last quarter of this year, if not earlier.

The above comic pretty much sums it up: Python is a refreshing look at the world of programming. Being so easy to learn and use, it has gained lots of attention from the developer community and it's used for several different purposes such as: web development, desktop apps, utilities, scientific computing, scripting language for games and special effects software, flying and of course mobile development. In fact, I am very surprised that it took so long before any mobile platform offered Python as a viable software creation vehicle.

In our platforms, Python is offered as a runtime option for S60 devices, ranging from 2nd. to 3rd Edition and all their feature packs. That makes it pretty wide reaching platform, since we have some 130 million+ devices in the market for which you can write Python applications.

The core technologies for mobile development have been analyzed here before: C++ is the raw power of Symbian OS available to developers, with its immense API and functionality sets but steep learning curve; Java is easy to learn and use and it's present in more than a billion devices. Its functionality is good but restricted by the Java Community Process since all APIs have to be agreeded upon by participants of each JSR spec.

Python comes in the middle, and that's in my view its main advantage: it is as easy as Java but (almost) as powerful as C++, and not limited by any industry standard processes: you want a Flying API which is not available? Just create an extension and you're good to go. Our good friend and Forum Nokia Champion Pankaj Nathani (a.k.a. croozeus) has in his website a great list of resources for Python development, including how-to's on writing extensions and more: http://croozeus.googlepages.com/py60extensions. Also, if you are the kind of developer who likes to hack around, Python for S60 runtime is open source, so you can spend your days and nights hunting bugs, adding new features and creating your own version of it!

Technology: Python for S60

Good for:

Internet mashups - You can easily mix the Location API with urlib and Google Maps and create a powerful mobile/web hybrid application which can leverage both platforms strengths. For example, take a look at MobyMaps, a geocoding application in just 104 lines of code, or Fupper, pyAmazon, Mobile Google Maps and many others.
Productivity applications - Access to the filesystem, contacts database, local connectivity, camera, gallery with incredible simple APIs lets you quickly write applications through which you can interact with your device and other people. MobileGTD, PyS60RemoteControl, PySpy are some examples.
Rapid prototyping - This is probably one of the most popular uses of Python for S60, and you should consider it very seriously. It seems that RP is still not very popular, as people usually choose a technology and develop an app with it; if something goes wrong or doesn't work, they will only find it out at the end of the project, when it's too late. I have seen countless cases like this, specially with Java development: "What, I cannot intercept a phone call with Java? But the product is almost ready!". Python helps you tackle this issue in a very elegant and effective way: you have an idea, want to check whether it works or not, just write a PyS60 script to test it. If you're satisfied, just tweak it a bit more and make it your final product, otherwise implement the final version in C++ or Java if you need more power or portability. I cannot stress enough the importance of showing your customer something working from Day One; this is much more effective than showing slides or specification documents.
Utilities - If you have a special event or need and you need to cook up a quick solution for a simple problem, use PyS60. To give you an example, I needed some sample apps for a talk I gave back in March. I was able to develop 10 utilities (photo takers, Bluetooth FTP client, video recorder, etc.) in less than a week.
Games - Given Python's powerful API set that can be used in games, such as: Sensor API, Open GL ES access, graphics and image manipulation, it is a good tool for churning out casual games meant to have a short lifecycle. It can compete well with Flash Lite for this purpose; even though its graphics facilities are not as nice, the powerful APIs will help you create the "wow" factor in your mini-games.

Why?

API/functionality availability - The S60-only list of APIs is reasonably extensive, and you can always add new ones by programming extensions using Python/C API. Many times modules can be added from other platforms without modification (for example, Python debugger - pdb).
Ease of use - It's by far one of the easiest languages to learn and work with. In a matter of weeks you can be highly productive with it.
Community support - There's a lot of Python code written by the open source community out there that can be used in your application.

Bad for:

High performance apps - Python's performance is reasonable, but it is slower than C++, Java and Flash. So if you need to develop a scientific application which requires a lot of number crunching, or a video streaming application, this is probably not the best solution.
Commercial apps, destinated to operator channels - Please take this one with a grain of salt. Applications for sale at operator channels usually are required to go through Symbian Signed process, and Python apps don't play very well with it.
Portability - Although the core Python language is the same, there are several APIs which are S60-exclusive so they won't work in any other platforms without several modifications.

Why?

Symbian Signed - In theory Python is compatible with the program, but in reality Symbian Signed was designed for C++ applications, so in some situations PyS60 apps may fail the tests so you have either to get a waiver for the failure or use the Express Signed option. For lack of a better option, I put Python on the "bad for" side of this article, but in the real world you may have different options that make it suitable for operator channels.
Platform security - Although it's very noble on its purpose (securing users' devices against malware), platform security can be a pain to live with during the development cycle. The whole Symbian Signed environment and platform security API restrictions slow down development time and can increase development costs, because of test fees, certificate purchasing, re-test, etc. This also affects Python for S60 so I left it here from the previous article.
Performance - Don't forget Python runs on an interpreter, so it has some performance disavantages when compared to native applications.
Tools - As it's a very new platform on S60, its tools are not as mature as other technolgies'. You can use the C++ SDK with the Python plug-in for testing your scripts, Python Shell for running scripts on your device, and py2sis or Ensymble to package them in an installable .sis file. There's still no integration with Carbide, and the emulator runs only on Windows. This is a pretty basic selection when compared to NetBeans or EclipseME for Java, Adobe CS3 for Flash Lite or Carbide.c++ for, hm, C++.

Python brings back the fun of hacking your device the way you want, with just a few lines of code. It's also a powerful tool for fast development of applications and utilities, besides being ideal for rapid prototyping of more complex software. The learning curve is smooth, the API set is big, and the support of open source community gives it a large set of libraries you can use in your application. As it's still in an incipient phase in the mobile software development, you can use it and contribute for its evolution in the next releases, making it a sweet platform for innovation on S60.

Photoshop Express fotoğraflarınızı web ortamında paylaşmadan önce dilediğiniz düzenlemeleri yapabilme fırsatının yanısıra bir de galeri oluşturmanız için size 2GB alan veriyor. Bu alandaki fotoğraflarınızı dilediğiniz kişilerle paylaşabilir ve bloglarınızda kullanabilirsiniz. Şu anda Beta 2 olarak açık olan servisin kullanımını detaylı olarak anlatmaya çalışacağım.

Dilerseniz hesap almadan önce Test Drive seçeneği ile standart bir kullanıcı gibi giriş yaparak arayüzü görme şansınız da var ama tabi normal olarak bazı özellikleri kullanamıyorsunuz. Şu anda sayfayı görüntüleyebildiğimize göre yapmamız gereken bir hesap oluşturmak. Hesap alabilmek için Join Now bağlantısına tıklıyoruz.

Çıkan ekranın tamamını dolduruyoruz. Create your photoshop.com personel sharing URL kısmına yazacağınız adres, başkalarının sizin fotoğraflarınıza ulaşması için kullanabilecekleri adres olacaktır. Örneğin benimkisi http://hakki.photoshop.com. Country kısmında henüz Türkiye (Turkey) seçeneği olmadığından mecburen United States seçiyoruz, sorun değil. Son olarak en alttaki By Providing your information and continuing… kısmını da işaretleyerek kullanım sözleşmesini onaylıyoruz ve Continue butonu ile devam ediyoruz. Formda belirttiğimiz email adresine gelen mesajdaki bağlantıyı tıklayarak onaylıyoruz ve sisteme giriş yapıyoruz.

Nasıl kullanılır?

Sisteme giriş yaptıktan sonra karşımıza çıkan ekranda temel üç adet seçenek mevcut. My Photos‘dan tüm fotoğraflarınıza ulaşabilirsiniz, My Gallery ile oluşturduğunuz ve paylaşıma açtığınız galerileri görüntülersiniz, Browse ile tüm galerilere göz atabilirsiniz.

My Photos‘a gelerek Upload Photos ile localden fotoğraf yükleyebileceğimiz gibi, Flickr, Picasa ve Photobucket hesaplarına buradan ulaşabilir ve buradaki fotoğrafları düzenleyebiliriz. Yeni albümler oluşturabilir veya var olanları silebiliriz. Bahsedilen hesaplarla birleştirme yaparsanız örneğin Flickr hesabınızdaki fotoğrafların tamamını burada görüntüleyebiliyor ve üzerinde değişiklik yapabiliyorsunuz, kaydettiğiniz de ise Flickr’a yeni bir fotoğraf olarak gönderiyor.

Upload Photo ile bir fotoğraf yüklerken bu fotoğrafı hangi albüme yükleyeceğimizi seçebilir, dilersek yeni bir albüm oluşturabilir ve bunun içerisine yükleyebiliriz. Ya da Library‘ye yükleyerek sonradan gerekli albüme aktarabiliriz. Ayrıca albümlerin sol tarafındaki alana tıklama yaparak albümlerinizi paylaşabilirsiniz.

Fotoğraflarla Çalışmak

Fotoğrafları herhangi bir fotoğraf arşiv programı gibi üç şekilde listelemeniz mümkün. Tablo şeklinde ayrıntılı olarak, tek resim şeklinde ve thumbnail (küçük resim) görünümünde (boyutlarını istediğiniz gibi ayarlayabiliyorsunuz). bu görünümlerden herhangi birinde iken imleci resimlerden birinin alt kısmında tutarsanız Photo Options başlığıyla yan taraftaki gibi açılan bir menü çıkacaktır. Buradaki seçeneklere kısaca değinirsek;

Edit Photo:
Fotoğrafı düzenlemenizi sağlayacak editörü açar

Rotate Right/ Rotate Left:
Fotoğrafı sağa veya sola döndürür.

Revert:
Fotoğrafı yükledikten sonra fotoğraf üzerinde herhangi bir düzenleme yaptıysanız aktif olur ve eğer seçerseniz fotoğrafı onjinal yani yüklediğiniz ilk hale getirir, fotoğraf üzerinde yaptığınız tüm değişiklikler silinir.

E-mail Photo:
Fotoğrafı ve istediğiniz bir mesajı başka birine göndermenizi sağlar. Aslında tam olarak fotoğrafı göndermez, kendi belirlediği bir şablona fotoğrafınızın küçük bir halini ve mesajınızı ekleyerek gönderir. Gelen emaildeki fotoğrafın üzerine tıklarsanız fotoğrafı orjinal halde görebilirsiniz. Test için gönderdiğim email de Türkçe karakterlerde sorun yaşandığını gördüm. Bu kısım üzerinde çalışılması gerekiyor. Dilediğimiz şablonu kendimiz oluşturabilmeli veya direkt fotoğrafı gönderebilmeliyiz.

Link:
Fotoğrafın orjinal haline ait linki panoya kopyalar ve istediğiniz yerde, örneğin blogunuzda kullanmanıza yarar.

Embed:
Linki html foramtında yani img tagının içerisinde kopyalar.

Download Photo:
Fotoğrafı localdeki bir alana indirmenize/kaydetmenize yarar.

Use as Album Cover:
Fotoğrafı albüm kapağı olarak kullanmanıza yarar.

Use as Album Cover:
Fotoğrafı photoshop express profilize ait resminiz olarak kullanmanızı sağlar.

Use as Gallery Background:
Fotoğrafı galeri arkaplanı olarak ayarlar ve döşer.

Remove from Albüm:
Fotoğrafı bulunduğu albümden Library‘ye taşır.

Remove from Library:
Fotoğrafı Library den kaldırır, yani taşıyacağı başka yer olmadığı için siler.

Fotoğraf üzerinde Düzenleme Nasıl Yapılır?

Öncelikle fotoğrafımıza çift tıklayarak editörde açıyoruz. Benim tavsiyem sağ üstteki mavi full-screen simgesine tıklayarak tam ekran çalışmanız olacaktır. Böylelikle çalışma alanımız genişlemiz ve localde kurulu bir programda çalışıyormuş gibi rahat olacağız. Klavyenizden Esc tuşuna basarak istediğiniz zaman eski görünüme dönebilirsiniz.

Sol taraftan herhangi bir araç seçtikten sonra fotoğrafınızın üzerinde işlem yaptınız diyelim bunu onaylamak için sağ üstte bulunan yeşil renkli onay simgesine tıklamanız gerekecek, eğer iptal etmek isterseniz de kırmızı renkli iptal simgesine tıklamalısınız. Bir çok değişiklik yaptıktan sonra eski yaptığınız herhangi bir değişikliği kaldırmak için ise sol taraftaki araç çubuğunda o işleme ait menünün solundaki onay simgesini kaldırmanız yeterli.

Crop%Rotate:
Resminizi kırpmak ve döndürmek için kullanabileceğiniz bir araçtır. Eğer benim gibi belirli bir oranda kırpma yapmak isterseniz yani genişlik ve yükseklik oranı 4/3 veya 3/2 şeklinde sabit olsun isterseniz
Aspect seçeneğinden bunu seçebilirsiniz.

Auto Correct:
Fotoğraflarınızdaki renk ve kontrst dengesini otomatik olarak düzelten bir araç, eğer üstte çıkan küçük resimlerden biri orjinal görünümden daha iyi ise bunu seçerek kullanabilirsiniz.

Exposure:
Pozlama, fotoğrafınız olması gerekenden daha karanlık veya aydınlık ise bu araç yardımıyla üst taraftaki farklı pozlama değerlerinden birini seçerek fotoğrafı olması gerektiği hale getirebilirsiniz.

Red-Eye Removal:
Flaş nedeniyle oluşan kırmızı göz kusurunu gidermek için bu araç kullanılır, sadece kırmızı gözlerin ortasına dokunmanız yeterli.

Touchup:
Fotoğrafta bazı local düzenlemeler ve temizlik işleri yapmak için kullanılır, photoshop taki diğer ismiyle clone stamp tool.

Saturation:
Renkleri daha canlı ya da soluk hale getirebilirsiniz, üstteki küçük resimlerden birini seçmeniz yeterli.

White Balance;
Bazen herşey düzgün olsa da fotoğraflarınızdaki renkler olması gerektiği gibi değildir. Bunun sebebi beyaz ayarının yanlış ayarlanmış olmasıdır. Dijital makinaların otomatik beyaz ayarları genellikle farklı ışık koşullarının aynı mekanda bulunmasına pek iyi uyum sağlamazlar ve hatalı ayar yapabilirler. Eğer fotoğrafınızdaki renkler olması gerektiği gibi değilse küçük resimlerden ortam ışığını değiştirerek bunu düzeltebilirsiniz.

Highlight:
Fotoğrafınızdaki en fazla ışık alan kısınların, en aydınlık yerlerin ışık şiddetini düzenlemenize yarayan bir araç.

Fill Light:
Fotoğrafınızdaki en karanlık, en az ışık almış yerleri istediğiniz ölçüde aydınlatmanıza olanak sağlayan bir araç.

Sharpen:
Unsharpmask yöntemini kullanarak fotoğrafınızın keskinliğini artımanıza yarayan bir araç, yine üstteki küçük resimlerden uygun olanı seçerek yapabilirsiniz.

Soft Focus:
Keskinliği yumuşatmaya yarayan bir araç, noise remover olarak kullanılabilir. Yani fotoğrafınızda oluşan istenmeyen gürültüleri (noktacıklanma) yok etmeye yarar.

Effect:
Bunlara tek tek değinmiyorum, bu kısım fotoğrafınıza uygulayabileceğiniz altı adet yardımcı efekt içeriyor. Deneyerek ne işe yaradıklarını görebilirsiniz.

Yapacaklarınız bittikten sonra sağ alttaki Save seçeneği ile fotoğrafınızı kaydedebilirsiniz, dilerseniz Save as ile başka bir fotoğraf olarak ta kaydetmeniz mümkün.
