Looks the Bleecker Bobs saga will be one to keep an eye on. According to Jeremiah & Ken, they are currently shopping for a new space, possibly in the East Village. Let's hope they find it:

This morning's NY Times carried news of the demise of Bob's West Third Street location.

Mark Stewart vs Primal Scream

Autonomia will be released through Future Noise Music on February 20th, a dense agit-protest superfunk monster with sirens and Bobby Gillespie's frenetic 'keeping the dream alive' call-and-response chant with Mark Stewart who explains the story behind the song - "I'd written this song about Carlo Giuliani, who was killed at the G8 demonstrations in Genoa. At that point, it was a protest song... afterwards I started getting on with Bobby and I asked Adrian [Sherwood] about doing it. It's important that people hear about the story, it's the message and the atmosphere as much as anything.'

Directed by Douglas Hart (founding member and bassist of The Jesus and Mary Chain) with Dominic Lee & Chiara Meattelli, the video exhibits a raw, riotous & feverish vivacity infused with the artists' trademark punk rock ethos to convey the song's deep political message.

Greenwich Village Daily Photo & Jeremiah's Vanishing NY report the following:

Sweet suffering Christ, when will it end? Ken Mac over at Greenwich Village Daily Photo just reported the staggering news that Bleecker Bob's record store is becoming a Starbucks.

He writes on his blog, "I walked into Bob's the other morning and asked him straight up, 'Is a Starbucks moving in here?' He replied 'Maybe,' not 'absolutely not!' The manager of Cafe Reggio confirms the Starbucks takeover of Bob's space, adding 'Starbucks will take 30% of our business. All the NYU kids want their mocha frappuccino.'"

Next week will be a busy one for London-based fans of music-related fashion & ephemera. Besides the Paul Gorman curated Lloyd Johnson Exhibit opening on Tuesday, my friend Gary Loveridge will be having his own show at 198, a contemporary arts & learning gallery in south east London, opening on Thursday the 26th.

Long a great collector specialising is punk-era posters, mostly of the UK variety, Gary really knows his stuff. Featured heavily in the wonderful book, The Art of British Rock: 50 Years of Rock Posters, Flyers and Handbills, Gary's collection will certainly look even better, if that's possible, on the walls of the gallery. And, as a special treat, if you make the opening, you'll get to see the great Spizz in an intimate setting.

As an adolescent in Weston Super Mare Gary Loveridge, music poster collector and punk historian, stole a Damned poster from the local record shop's sound proof listening booth. Then going to gigs in Bristol he would take down the record company display advertising the band's latest releases. On the way home Loveridge would rip down the fly posters and anything else he could get his hands on. This began a growing fragmented punk collage over his teenage bedroom wall, thus beginning Loveridge’s collection of music posters.

Friend of the blog, Paul Gorman, has been hard at work setting up the incredible looking Lloyd Johnson: The Modern Outfitter exhibit at the Chelsea Space in London, due to open this coming Tuesday the 24th.

In between the arranging & setting up, and whatever else needs to be done when setting up an exhibit of this size, Gorman has found the time to post updates on his blog, Paul Gorman Is. He's done four as of this writing, and for those of you interested in rock 'n roll history & fashion, I highly suggest taking a look at whats in store for visitors to Chelsea Space. I have to say I'm really disappointed that I have no reason to be in London right now.

Lloyd Johnson: The Modern Outfitter – the exhibition about one of the greatest contributors to British street fashion and visual culture of recent times – is at London gallery Chelsea Space in the New Year, from January 24 to March 3. The show will be centred on Johnson’s archive of garments, artwork, fabrics, ephemera and personal effects, augmented by contributions from customers and collectors from Tokyo to Sydney to LA.

Johnny Otis - RIP

"Born white, the son of Greek immigrant parents, and raised in a predominantly black neighborhood in Northern California in the 1920s, Otis decided as a youth that he'd rather be black.

The choice put him on a path to a life in music during which he created the sensually pulsing 1958 hit "Willie and the Hand Jive." It also gave him a deep connection to black culture that helped him discover such future stars of R&B and rock as Etta James, Little Richard, Jackie Wilson, Hank Ballard and Little Esther Phillips.

"Yes, I chose," Otis told The Times in 1979, "because despite all the hardships, there's a wonderful richness in black culture that I prefer."
