This is a joyful time for me because, while I love hats, summer in Texas is very unforgiving to extra layers, especially if they're on top of your head.

Inspired by mine and Alex's recent purchases (the knit stripped knit caps pictured on the right), my friend Allison just had to find herself a hat. So off we went for pizza and hat shopping. I'm sure Alex got tired of us trying on almost every hat of season but you can't make an informed decision without weighing your options (or at least that's my excuse when we go shopping).

We started off with flapper-style hats - hence the cigarettes - then moved on to something furrier. My hat seemed appropriate with the full moon coming up.

The animal-ear hats were popular with the anime crowd before they were ever in JC Penney or Rue 21. Their rise to the mainstream, however, has made them lighter on my wallet so I'll probably buy a new one while it's still cold. Plain black or cheetah print like the picture?

What i like most about hats is that they have a stand alone personality. Sure you can use one to complete an outfit but the hat doesn't neet the outfit as much as the outfit needs the hat. Even when they're just keeping heads warm, hats tend to say a lot on their own.

In the end, she bought the military-style cap on the left, which is a great offset to her casual gypsy style. I thought it was a tad ironic that it says "fashion blogger" more than my fuzzy knit cap but the dozen more hats I own make up for that.

I warned her that you can't just ever buy one hat. Like any accessory, they're a great reflection of our mood and who we feel like being that day, and for that reason, you need more than one.

So what kind of hat is favorite at the moment?

It's funny because I've complained about needing inspiration and motivation yet I've failed to feed the part of my life that does exactly that: blogging.

I'm not really into New Year's resolutions as I am rarely able to keep them. But IFB's motivational mood board project helped reinforce goals/resolutions I had made for my blog. I feel like in 2011, I tried to open my blog too much. I wanted to show that I was more than fashion but I forgot this his blog served a niche in chaos of my mind: an outlet for my love of fashion, personal style and where it meets my geekiness.

So for 2012, I want to do the GEEKING OUT posts for the things that really catch my attention. I'm also going to be posting them on my new tumblr along with also those things that make me sparkle inside.

I never thought of myself as a writer but I do enjoy it. I'm going to try and make that a daily thing along with drawing and reading a magazine or book. I just started Eccentric Glamour by Simon Doonan - the book review will be on of many to hopefully come as I love to read.

I've also recently become a fan of Etsy and handmade goods. It's a mix of my girlfriend's transition into a jewelry artisan and my belief that the American economy would be better if we produced more. I'm also dusting off my old sewing machine and, rather than buying new clothes, I will try to make it and blog about it.

At the root of it, I want to feel like I'm creating something and staying true to who I am.

I was pleasantly surprised to the the necklace print that was so popular on girls' shirts translated to a men's shirt. That, the red-gem-crosses and the 50% off made me buy it on the spot.

I love the tassels on these hats!

Alex and I have been exploring the area we moved into when we discovered Rue21 in walking distance. Although I had a lot of people telling me about this store, I never stepped foot in it until about a month ago. After some Christmas shopping, we're both loving the accessories and the super-stylish mens' clothing.
That's another thing I've been trying lately: layering skirts for that pettycoat effect and added warmth since the temperatures keep dropping (yay!). I think a lot of people (especially here in the States) don't really understand wearing a pettycoat for cuteness rather than fetish, but that's a blog for another day.

My daily jewelry has started featuring a necklace made recently by Alex to hold my quartz pendulum. I like to think we all have our pendants and talismans that we keep close for protection, inspiration or courage - mine are the pendulum and a garnet bracelet.
Lately, I've been permanently attached my laptop in our living room, working long hours on homework and a website gig. We don't have cable but we have Netflix has given us the gift of Xena, also known as a lesbian "must-see." Well, I haven't been watching as much as I would like but Alex has been playing it regularly as I work. She was my hero in my early teenage year, and peeking out from my laptop lately has reminded me.

Be Bold, Be Aggressive
Xena was by no means meek - she was the Warrior Princess after all. She was aggressive, in your face, and she was unapologetic about it. Some people would describe their personalities or personal styles this way, and that's not a bad thing. People like Xena are the ones who get things done, set trends and move civilization along. Even if you don't feel like a complete warrior, you can still try to do or wear something bolder than usual.

Don't Be Afraid of Higher Powers
As a Warrior Princess, Xena challenged and was challenged by a lot of people, including the Gods. These weren't easy battles as Gods tended to be all-powerful or pretty damn close. In life, we come across people that we see as "all-powerful" but it's important to remember that everyone has a weakness. And just because a "Higher Power" (like a magazine editor) says it, doesn't always mean it's right. You have to do (and wear) what feels right to you.

You Can Fight Hard and Still Be Feminine
Speaking of battles, Xena fought a lot of them - 6 seasons worth actually - and despite her tendency for bashing in heads, she was still actively portrayed as a seductress. She proves that femininity does not equate to submission.

A Little Cleavage is Not a Bad Thing
Sometimes I get the feeling that fashion has no room large, prominent breasts. Models all have tiny cleavage and anything bigger gets categorized as obscene. But why are breasts considered obscene? I don't think that a woman's body should be kept hidden but there has a happy medium between modesty and sexual freedom. Xena's outfit confirms you can show a little cleavage and still go about your day (kicking ass, taking names or just having an adventure).

Everyone Has Critics
During the series, Xena rescues a lot of people while others criticize her and throw her out their villages. It's a phrase we all heard at one time or another, "Not everyone is going to like you." But that never stopped her from doing what she thought was right, and, most times, those people apologized for being antagonistic. Some people may not like your volunteer job or your outfit or your hair but that shouldn't stop you from doing what you think is right.

Don't Let Your Past Govern You
When we first meet Xena, she's got a bloody past and a thousand lives on her conscience. Though this weighs heavily on her, she doesn't let it hold her back. It's true that we are shaped by our past experiences but we shouldn't let them drown us. A fashion faux pas shouldn't keep up from trying new styles the same way a bad grade shouldn't make us give up in the class (and I speak from personal experience on this one). We are more than our mistakes.

No Matter How Great, You Are Not a God
Maybe it was her dark past but Xena was very humble about all the lives she saved. In life, a little ego can be good for you but don't take it overboard or you'll annoy people. And just because you get accolades for some things you did right, it doesn't mean that you are incredible at everything. Normally, when we get a big head we miss our own shortcomings and fail.

When Taking on a Big Task, It's Better to Have a Plan
Some of my favorite Xena fight scenes are when she's taking on a small army but she wins because she pre-rigs her environment. She lays out traps and funnels the fight so she can stay in control. In real life, it's not that easy to stay in control of a big project or situation but it's good to go into it with some kind of plan and a catalog of your on-hand resources.

It's All In the Company You Keep
Finding people who compliment you is just as important as finding a style that compliments you. Xena had Gabrielle, whose naivete and open heart was the perfect balance to her jadedness. She also inspired Xena to keep her dark side in check. In a similar way, we should try to keep those who inspire us close.

Don't Judge Too Quickly
This isn't anything new - I just wanted to reiterate something we'd all heard before. In the show, people judged Gabrielle as small and weak although she could defend herself quite well. Xena, on the other hand, looked tough and angry but episode after episode showed her softer side.

Why Can't Manly Men Wear Skirts?

Image via Elle.com

I've watched plenty of fashion seasons come and go that feature "borrow-from-the-boys" trends in women's wear - everything from small, tailored details to full on gender-bending. And while I'm a complete fan of gender-bending, lately I've been wondering why it doesn't go the other way around. Why isn't menswear cited as inspired by women's wear?

"Girls can wear jeans
And cut their hair short
Wear shirts and boots
'Cause it's OK to be a boy
But for a boy to look like a girl is degrading
'Cause you think that being
a girl is degrading..."
~ What It Feels Like for a Girl, Madonna

When guys have "feminine details" on their clothing, the overwhelming mainstream response is "gay" - as in these guys are weak, submissive, feminine and, overall, bad. But when women wear ties, blazers and men's button-up shirts, they are aggressive, dominant and sexy. It feels like an imbalance in gender power. If a girl wants to look like a guy, it's only natural but if a guy wants to look like a girl, there's something wrong with him.

Dressing in "girly" clothing, a guy can be perceived as silly, not to be taken seriously, like in the cases of Halloween costumes and drag queens. Years go, women, however, had to don power suits and wear loafers to be taken seriously in the business world (which is often referred to as a Boy's Club). Does that mean then that clothing typically reserved for the female gender is frivolous?

Image via HotTopic.com

A few years ago, Hot Topic started carrying Tripp's "One-Legged Pants". Anyone could see that it was a maxi skirt - with chains - for men. But why not call it a skirt? Mainly because their target market for these "pants" are men and men would never wear a skirt. I teased my boyfriend in high school about his one-legged pants - not because he was wearing a skirt but because he would not admit to it. He told me skirts weren't manly.

Is it really so wrong for a man to be wearing a "skirt" while women walk around everyday in pants? Makes you wonder if there is something dirty about femininity that must be kept away from men.
So today I bring you a quick street style snap I took Friday night at the discount theater in Plano, TX.

For $4, Alex and I saw Shark Night not in 3D. Confession: we enjoy bad, indie B-movies. What made this a "bad" movie? Apart from the overly aggressive sharks, the antagonists were motivated by the high ratings on Shark Week. It was cheesy suspense and worth it (LOL).

I saw these two ladies walking in right before us but forgot to ask what they were watching. I didn't see them in our theater so I doubt sharks were part of their night. I really liked all the layers and the oversized knit sweaters.
I feel like I started this blog to share these parts of my life and thoughts to anyone who would listen but I've been doing a shitty job at it.

The only good thing about the lack of posts is the increase in design work I've had. I think I should add a whole section in my portfolio dedicated to tattoo artists. Because there are still a lot of people who look down on tattoos, I think their creativity is under appreciated.

Despite all the great artists whose I've been designing cards, I miss working with the fashion industry. It's been a while since I added a designer, stylist or mua(h) to my client list. That's why I was excited when Karen, a local event producer, contracted me for some fashion show flyers (design below). I want to do more of these but I'm trying to figure out how to position myself as a fashion/style graphic and web designer.
I've always liked gift shops because they're normally full of random, pretty things. T-Hee was no different, and the fun spirit behind these random, pretty things was the philosophy for the store.

1: Halloween OwlsThese glitter owl critters caught my attention as I walked into the door. Their Halloween display table was full little decorations but the owls really stood out with those cute purple eyes.

2: Locker WallpaperI would have killed for a roll of this in high school. I had the random magnets, magazine clippings and drawings but the wallpaper really would have made it feel like home.

3: Lifesize Cardboard CutoutsThis is probably the closest I will ever get to Jack Sparrow but I'm okay with it. If neither Jack nor Elvira are your cup of tea, they also have Justin Beiber.

4: Festive Sunglasses

5: Attitude Button EarringsIn case you're like me and have run out of place to pin a button that supports/confuses/insults people, they now come as earrings.

6: Scented CandleMy new favorite thing now that we have our own apartment. Candles give a room a certain ambiance that you can't get with most lighting. Alex and I both agreed to come back for the Mint Mojito and Rosemary Sage candles.

7: Paper Fashion WorkbookIs this what paper dolls evolved to? I don't know who the paper fashions are for (no doll in book) but I love the idea of designing my own witchy outfit.

8: Good Witch BagI like the the display overall - it takes a crafty-looking bag and makes it more than just a costume accessory.

9: Fuzzy Ball KeychainsThe imagery of them is a lot dirtier than what they are. My sister first turned me on to them as phone charms in Japanese street style photos.

10: Rainbow ChandelierI don't think it's for sale but it looks awesome over the register. My apartment has low ceilings but I think we can still make one fit LOL.

This past Monday, the Dallas Weekly newspaper sent out a press release announcing Fashion Week Dallas. That's right - the holy grail of local fashion, which has been whispered and wished, which was happening then not, finally got a date: January 16-22, 2012.

The man spearheading this project is Dallas Weekly's newest fashion editor Mahiri Takai. Takai founded his own production company in 2007 - Mklinks Models/Fashion Shows and Fashion Syndicate Press - and has produced shows in London, Florida, Atlanta, and California.

"The wait is over," says Takai, "We have fashion week in our grasp and we are going to make this one of the biggest and best.“

This event will provide a core focus for the local fashion industry centered around a schedule of major fashion events and activities. Fashion Week Dallas (FWD) will be about celebrating and showcasing our extraordinary talent in the world of Fashion. In turn, Takai hopes FWD will leave a legacy that will support and nurture our fashion stars of tomorrow.

"The concept of this exciting series of shows is to create opportunity for local designers, stylist, make up artist, and talent to truly showcase their skills," continues Takai, "In this glamorous environment, fashionistas, men, women and children alike will enjoy top-of-the-line runway shows and have the opportunity to place orders and interact with the designers."

Among the planned activities, FWD will bring in the world’s most exciting emerging fashion designers to Dallas for the Fashion 2012 International Fashion Showcase. There will also be a major push for Dallas Menswear and an educational project in collaboration with Designing Dreams and FIT.

Takai adds, "Fashion lovers will be in fashion heaven as they spend a stylish week in Dallas soaking up the latest in fashion design."

Designers or their representatives will be available to take orders on the spot. Boutique and specialty fashion buyers, fashion representatives, socialites and corporate sponsors are also sure to enjoy these events. Different designers will be featured at each Fashion Preview, ensuring a new presentation for every audience. And at the end of FWD, attendees will vote for the Top Emerging Designer.

According to James Washington, Publisher of Dallas Weekly newspaper, “In 2012 the eyes of the world will be upon us - we want to show the world that Dallas is the leading force in the global creative sphere. Our fashion reputation is second to none and we will ensure that reputation is showcased and celebrated to the broadest possible global audience and that there are opportunities for the whole of the industry to get involved and participate.”

FWD will officially start on Monday, January 16 2012 at South Side on Lamar with a word from FWD Chair Mahiri Takai. While the bulk of FWD is planned to take place at South Side on Lamar, shows and activities will be scattered around Dallas, including a Wednesday luncheon for buyers and boutique owners.

If you are a local designer who would like to be a part of FWD, please read the <a target=_"blank" href="http://www.mklinksmodel.com/#!designer-info">Requirements Page and contact Takai as soon as possible.

The FWD website is still under construction but we will keep you posted when it goes live. Meanwhile you can contact Mahiri Takai at mklinks@yahoo.com.

Though sometimes it feels pointless and cluttered with information, I actually like the nexus of quick opinions and observations. Hashtags are also a genius result of Twitter #justsaying. My account, however, doesn't really reflect my fondness for Twitter. Even my live-tweeting of Project Runway has fallen to wayside.

Today I was inspired by DKNY PR Girl's tumblr quote: "Pick one thing, just one - and do it better today than you ever have..." because it's about progress, not perfection. Any social media marketer worth his/her salt will tell you the same applies for Twitter.

As I mentioned yesterday, there is no giant, overall goal when it comes to social media. It doesn't matter if you're wanting 100 more followers or $1,000 more for this quarter, these are both small goals which will later be replaced by other small (but no less important) goals. Working with this theory, I wanted to give myself 10 small goals to complete daily on Twitter in hopes of becoming a better tweeter. Hands down better tweeting equals better content - and I'm sure that my 10 tweets per day minimum will accomplish that if I follow a plan.

1: Tweet a Media/Marketing LinkBecause marketing is such a big part of what I do (at least that's what my resume says), I like to read about how new communication tech and how people are recycling old marketing ideologies for a new generation. If I like it, somebody else probably will.
2: Tweet a Fashion Blog LinkMy Google Reader is 60% fashion blogs so it's obvious to see where my passions lie. I don't think this will be a hard "to-do".

3: Recommendation TweetI've seen a lot of these tweets start off as "I'm currently loving..." Human nature states that when something catches our eye or makes our Wish List, we have to recommend it to someone.
4: RetweetThis one is a given in becoming a better tweeter (just ask the million and one people who've written about it). I'm looking for tidbits that make me smile like inspirational quotes.
5: Reply to At Least One TweetAnd this means more than a "Yes" or "No". A good marketer will tell you that an intelligent response goes a long way

6: Tweet At Least One Instagram PictureIf you look for at least one good, interesting thing everyday day, you enrich your life. If you take a picture of it on Instagram, you enrich your Twitter feed (just make sure they're linked).
7: Tweet a Link Back to Your BlogWhat's the point of social media if you don't promote yourself just a little. My blog automatically publishes to my feed but on days I don't post, it's necessary to reference an older but relevant blog I wrote.
8: Picture of Someone's Personal or Street StyleI'm slightly obsessed with personal style. I love seeing how people translate trends, colors and event the items themselves into their own fashion language. I hope finding and tweeting one pic a day is not too much.
9: Tweet About Something Interesting You're DoingI know this sounds self-centered but so does most blogging and tweeting. There are occasions where I attend cool events or am watching or reading something interesting. I blog about most of them but a quick in-the-moment tweet shouldn't be so hard.
10: Tweet Something RandomThe last tweet is dedicated to me being me. I'm very random sometimes, I tend to yell at inanimate objects, and I was never diagnosed with attention deficit disorder but I swear I have it. This tweet will reflect that.

So what do you think of my 10-Step-Twitter-Plan?
Do you have one? Or is this one you could adopt and adjust for yourself?

There's been a lot of talk about Google+ knocking Facebook off it's pedestal so it must be something new and amazing... Right? But after logging on, it just looks like Facebook. It has prettier icons and a more modern feel but the same overall function and features.

I think the feature everyone was most excited about was Google+ Circles but Facebook has parried with Lists for your Friends. I've slowly started categorizing people but my 300+ Friends looks daunting - I can't imagine people who are past 1,000. The Lists are obvious knockoffs of Circles but social media is made up of the sharing (and stealing) of ideas.

And now Facebook is rolling out with Timeline come October. While Timeline seems to be a response to the attention Google+ is getting, it seems to also be taking from MySpace. It looks like Facebook is going back to it's social media roots and adding a bit more customization (a MySpace feature I personally missed).

Do you even remember MySpace? It was the social network that started it all - the profile page, internet fame, collecting friends and the reach of online advertising. Why wouldn't you take a few examples from it? ...Like modules. That's right Facebook, don't think I didn't notice how your design improved.

I'm still wondering if Facebook has actually reached it's peak yet. Every business and their grandmother has a page, a lot of their recent changes are pissing people off, and, just like fashion, social media goes through dreaded cycles of mass acceptance and death. But there doesn't seem to be a noticeable amount of people jumping ship - at least not regular, non-media types (i.e. the majority of the population needed to make a social network work).

I'm still fumbling through Google+, dreading having to update yet another network and watching my Klout score go up and down like a drunk in a bouncehouse. There is no light at the end of this tunnel, no ultimate goal when it comes to social media because it never stops growing and thus your spot is never guaranteed. Google+ might be what's after Facebook but what's after that?
She's prim and proper-looking with Vaseline on her teeth and glitter on her eyes. And despite years of modernization and rebranding, that image has stuck. With movies like Miss Congeniality and shows like Toddlers and Tiaras, I'm sure I'm not the only one with this image in mind. But imagine if a girl got up on that stage with a mohawk and a tux.

For years, the competitions have been trying to shake the perception of being "just beauty pageants" by selecting competitors who exemplify leadership qualities and intelligence. Jenelle Hutcherson, a 25-year-old hair stylist, would ideally be a great Miss Long Beach 2012 as she's already deeply involved as a mentor in her community. However, she's an out lesbian whose looks don't quite fit the cookie-cutter aesthetic. She's even planning to wear a tux during the formal wear portion of the competition this coming November (which has been okay'd by the Long Beach pageant boss).

While some people may wonder, "So what?" it's hard to ignore when someone challenges social preconceptions. Imagine if she won - more and more people might get the idea that beauty comes in many different packages (which we all know it does).

Janelle has admitted that it's not about the crown but rather "it’s about getting up on that stage and standing up for what I care about." If you support what Jannelle is trying to do, make sure to Like her Facebook page.
Not just online but design when it comes to branding and making sure your message come across all mediums. The most important, I believe, is the business card. Apart from you, it's usually the first impression people get of your business.

About a month ago, I finally printed some cards that matched my new branding. I'm more than a blogger now, I'm also do web design, graphics and, occasionally, some marketing consulting. A few business card how-to's all agreed, though, that your business cards should always have the logo that appears on your blog - even if it's your blog name in a certain font. Consistency is key so make sure the color scheme also lines up.

As I looked online for inspiration, I was surprised that there weren't that many examples of original lifestyle blogger cards. I found a lot - especially among fashion bloggers - using the mini-cards from MOO printing.

I liked how the cards below addressed certain issues like "What do you do when your run more than one blog?" and "Can you fit blog, social media and contact info on one side?" Also, some people have started to write mini-"Who I Am"-paragraphs which I learned was a big no-no. But with online authenticity and emerging media, business cards aren't what they use to be - check out the ones with the QR code. And what if your blog isn't really a a business? Keep it simple on both sides.

Click cards pics to enlarge and flip through them.
In Dallas, we get a few organizations, promoters and production companies that try to produce one every few months but the Dallas Weekly fashion department seems to be producing one every month in hopes of showcasing local urban designers and boutiques.

This past Saturday, Mahiri Takai - Dallas Weekly fashion editor - hosted this month's intimate fashion show for AIDS awareness featuring two local businesses: Urban Relics and My Bag Boutique. It was kind of hard finding the theater in the Dallas Convention Center but the silver pants and hearing my girlfriend say she liked a purse was worth it.

 <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ugGzRyExT1Q/TnfT-IBu_FI/AAAAAAAABko/FWUqZmZSgRA/s1600/funkaidsshow03.JPG"rel="lightbox[funkaidsshow]">

These are a few highlights from the show, including a few purses I liked. The clothes wasn't as modern or trendy due to Urban Relics being a vintage resale shop. I normally don't like bags walking in fashion shows but because the runway was low and we were close to the stage, it worked out.

I was a little disappointed in the lack of looks on the runway but we'll see what Mahiri and Dallas Weekly come up with next month. Hopefully he can get more retailers on board. I truly believe, however, that every little show adds to the Dallas fashion scene, building up what could possibly become THE fashion capital of the South (United States).

I saw this young lady and instantly knew I had to get a picture of her cheetah print shirt. The close up was a bit out of focus but the fringe and studded patterns really convey "Cowgirl Chic". I forgot to ask her where she got that furry handbag... Grrr ;)
Top Nail Polish Trends

Over the past few years, nails have become the new hot accessory. Before they were cute additions to your wardrobe, you got them done because it's kind of expected especially if you wanted a complete, polished look. The women were few and far in between who dared layer colors and designs. Some people outright thought it was juvenile.

But times have changed as they always do and tiny brushes, stickers, gems and nail polish strips have all made it easy for women (and some men) to really pay attention to what their nails say about them. For this Top 10 Tuesday, I was moved by IFB's Project #12: Nail Fun to see what everyone was doing with their nails and how many people had learned to (in comic book speak) bend nail polish to their will.

1: Yellow

It seems like this Summer was all about keeping it bright but as Fall sets in,
let's see how this trends adapts. I'm thinking accents.
PICS: SugarSpiceStyle / The Looks For Less / Modest Mademoiselle / Mommy Posh / Zeyra Pupe Doll

2: Lots of Lines

Ever since cheaper nail polish brands started coming with thin, salon-style brushes,
the single line at the top has evolved into plaids and intricate line patterns.
PICS: 365 Days of Nail Art / Loretta / The Looks For Less / Yui Lohan Pupe Doll

3: Shattered

I think the crackle nail polish trend is pretty self-explanatory -
we've seen it spread like wild fire across the blogging community.
I remember in the 90's when I was about 10, it was mainstream to paint
each nail a different color. I heard the 90's are making a comeback.
A derivative of the multi-colored nails (and an old practice really) is the accent nail
where just one nail is not like the others, be it via color or design.
As trendy as leopard print has been for the past couple of months, why would it not
become a nail trend? Haven't tried it yet? There's no shortage of tutorials.
I don't think beaucoup glitter is trend as much as a classic. It's very simple
and very pretty. I have noticed more use of rainbow glitter though.
Blogger Grinning Soul did a tutorial for galaxy nails which made me notice quite a few nails that look like starry skies. The detail and technique make these nails masterpieces. Some people use little brushes while others prefer stickers or newspaper. And check out the Missoni inspired nails - that's patience!
Polka dots is a classic print that is fairly easy to do.
Like tips and glitter, I think this style might also become a nail classic.
It adds a little fun to photos. And in the spirit of fun photos I've decided to try something new with my outfit pics. This OOTD features a look I've really grown to love accessorizing: t-shirt and (lace) skirt.

The good news is that Dallas seems to be cooling in time for Fall Fashions. I can wear boots and hats without feeling stuffy. This means that FNO will NOT be in the three-digit temperatures which probably has everyone pulling out their Fall best. The bad news is that I'm still bogged down with freelance work, school starting and the Never After website that I probably won't be able to fully enjoy the three fashion shows I hope to attend.

The worst news is that my car may not be fully functional tomorrow. My dad is going to take a look at it right after I get off work and replace the part before all my belts burn out at once. We MIGHT be done by 6pm but who knows.

Photo fun via Pixlr-o-Matic which lets you do the Instagram thing with photos on your computer with more filters.

Don't forget to have fun with your style. What's the point of fashion if it doesn't make you smile and feel sparkly on the inside. This young lady was on her way to a party when I caught her outside of Hobby Lobby in Cedar Hill. I don't think they need the extra publicity ;) though a lot of big brand pieces do find themselves on my Lust List. Kenneth Cole, for example, has always had a knack for tailored lines and his sweaters usually make said List. He recently made another one my my Lists - Fashion I Respect - by taking a stance on certain issues that are very important to me such as gay rights.

Since the mid-80's, Kenneth Cole has supported AIDS research and awareness - his brand has never been a stranger to social issues. Now, his newest campaign wants you to know that the company is more than "What You Stand In", it's "What You Stand For". "I've used my brand platform to raise awareness about important social issues," says Kenneth Cole, "It's not just what [people] look like on the outside, it's who they are on the inside."

The site - WhereDoYouStand.com - calls for open dialogue on the issues of gun control, war, pro-choice and gay rights. Being the good little lesbian I am, the first thing I clicked on was "Gay Rights". The question "IS PREJUDICE AGAINST SAME-SEX MARRIAGE A FORM OF MINORITY DISCRIMINATION?" greeted me along with a stream of comments about the issue. Some simply stated yes, others cited religion while some were completely appalled that it would be considered "minority discrimination". Personally, I've always believed marriage to be a religious institution and, legally, we should just have civil unions that grant every couple (gay or straight) the same rights. Then you could got get married at your place of worship.

Despite the comments that left me wondering if people understood that civil rights were about equality, I applaud Kenneth Cole for using his brand to create an open forum where people can share, discuss and argue their views. While not everyone agrees, you see where the other side is coming from and I think that's important when formulation your own opinion on matters that affect more than just you.

Our world has grown smaller over the years and it's hard not to be directly affected by at least one of these issues. Taking a stance might seem like the last thing on your mind but sooner or later you will be asked (and probably judged by) where you stand on certain issues. Kenneth Cole, I believe, has made a big point with this campaign: where you stand is as much a part of you as the clothes you wear.

I figured this post would be the perfect segue back into blogging. IFB started a project to help blogger create and share content. Each week there is a different theme to blog about and this week they're wanting to know what the essential items are for a blogger.

Gateway Laptop
I started blogging not long after buying Yurihime. After three years, it heats up pretty quickly and the battery only holds 20 minutes of charge but I call it my trusty sidekick for a reason. It's a little bit heavier than I would like but you build arm muscle lugging it around to class, Starbucks and client meetings everyday for three years. I even bought it a cute padded bag at Office Depot.

Fujifilm Finepix Z Digicam
I bought this camera at the same time as the laptop because I heard Fujifilm was a great brand and it was metallic red. It goes everywhere with me which means I sometimes forget to charge it.

iPhone
My girlfriend and I actually call this our baby. We've even bought 6 different outfits. Lately it's been feeling pink. The phone helps mostly with social media posts but it's a camera when my Fujifilm is dead. I'm trying use it for note taking (I want to go paperless) but still haven't gotten the hang of it.

Makeup Bag
Good for freshening up before an event or outfit shoot.

Notepad & Pen
Did I mention I'm trying to go paperless? But I still keep a tiny spiral notebook and pen on my at all times. I can't seem to type on my phone as fast as I write. My girlfriend says this is a good thing.

Thesaurus.com
Please refer to my Top 10 Overused & Hijacked Fashion Words in Lifestyle and Non-Fashion Marketing ... because sometimes finding the right words to use is hard - until you look them up.

Google Reader
I found this is the best way to keep up with my favorite bloggers and catalog my inspiration.

Photoshop
I don't this one needs an explanation but I use it to resize and edit photos, create collages and recolor my drawings. I'm sure there's other things I can't think of.

Hootsuite
Self-promotion is no longer sneered at. Rather we glorify it and create more efficient ways to do it. I've used it mostly for businesses so I'm actually re-learning to use it now as a blogger.

ANote
The first app I actually paid more than 99 cents for. It's a notebook with folders (which the iPhone Notes lacks), Google Docs sync, reminders for posting, background customization and a setting which acts as an editorial calendar. I'm still trying to perfect it as an editorial calendar but I will blog about it when I do.

Beautiful Girlfriend
In case I don't mention her enough, Alex is a big help for this blog. Apart from taking all the outfit photos (sometimes tired as hell), she also keeps me motivated and makes an awesome cup of coffee. She also holds my purse when I'm taking street snap pictures.
As I mentioned in one of my last posts, Alex has started designing chainmail jewelry that we're going be selling online under the label Never After. She's really serious about it and says it's my fashion influence. This is the part where I bat my eyelashes and smile because I think she's always been creative. It's one of the qualities I love in women.

Although I haven't quite gotten the merchandise on the website, she's already selling at another avenue. She currently has a few pieces (pictured) in a local boutique!

That's normally a big deal for small designers so I'm really proud of her. So proud that I helped coordinate a mini-trunk show for the boutique's monthly Art Meets Art event. It's where ONLi boutique takes two local artisans (and some wine) and invites people get to know their work.

The artist painted in the back while Alex hung around her little display. I think it was a great turnout for such a warm night. The Bishop Arts' much publicized First Thursday helped. We honestly weren't expecting a sale on her first night in the boutique but one of her bracelets sold! As we're both big believers in omens, we took this as a good sign.

The only thing left to do is for me to get the product pictures on the website. It's been hard with my usual web clients needing things suddenly and my camera eating photos (like the rest from the trunk show). I know it's going to take more time on my part to make the business successful.

We have one bazaar coming up in September and we're applying for a holiday-themed show in November. Alex and I hope that one day her jewelry - and Never After as a whole - will generate a good income. Even if she doesn't consider what she's doing fashion, that's one dream she shares with a lot of designers. What do you think of her designs? Would you wear one of these necklaces?

"It’s the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting."
~ The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho (Alex quotes this book a lot.)
