Many people take a sharp intake of breath when they realise how much home renovation can cost, which is why it is vital to plan ahead and draw up a budget.

Setting a budget can help to bring some financial discipline to a project by reining in any tendencies towards impulse spending; It is all too easy to get carried away, but a properly costed plan will help to keep the project within sensible limits. Once the initial budget has been drawn up it is time to cut costs even further and there are lots of ways to save money without cutting corners or compromising on safety.

It should go without saying, but one of the best ways to save money is to get quotes from a number of builders. And it does no harm to discreetly let the builders know that they’re not the only company being asked for a quote. When the quotes come back it’s worth looking at them in detail and questioning any areas that seem particularly expensive. Also consider the quality of finish required. For example if a wall is going to be covered in wallpaper, it may not need to be skimmed to perfection. Many builders offer a much cheaper plastering option called ‘making good’, which may suffice.

When buying the fixtures and fittings, there are plenty of money saving avenues to explore. By all means spend an enjoyable afternoon or two wandering round bathroom or kitchen showrooms to get some inspiration, but then consider making a list of everything necessary and go online to look for bargains. It is often possible to buy items for a fraction of the price by buying last year’s model or ex-display models. Online auctions can also be an excellent place to pick up second hand bargains. Being prepared to compromise a little can result in savings of hundreds, or even thousands of pounds.

Salvage yards are fantastic for picking up vintage timber and ironwork and it is worth visiting regularly and letting the owner know exactly what you’re after as the best deals tend to come and then go very quickly. It is also worth keeping an eye on local small ads and recycling forums because quite often people will give away furniture, kitchen and bathroom units and sheds to anyone willing to dismantle them and take them away.

Getting creative can be a good way of saving money on renovation whilst also putting your unique stamp onto the home. By adding new handles or perhaps some salvaged ones via the methods mentioned above, things like kitchen units can be given a new lease of life. Similarly, furniture in other rooms can be stripped or varnished to change their feel, which is very useful if they no longer match the aesthetics of a newly redecorated room.

The Loft

The apartment featured here was equipped with a bulthaup b1 in puristic Alpine white. The kitchen island, enhanced with a solid wooden ash bartop looks like a sculpture in the room. The ceiling-high units also serve as room dividers.

The Historic Former Classroom

The former classroom of an old, renovated school house has been turned into a spacious living room. Its new owner took great care to choose authentic materials. A solid floor of wooden boards was laid, while the old windows were carefully restored and the walls plastered with clay.

The well-proportioned white bulthaup b1 kitchen with stainless steel worktop blends in beautifully with the “historic” room, which is now totally “lived in” in the truest sense of the word. The shelving system with sliding glass doors makes the area above the kitchen line particularly attractive and highly functional. The bulthaup c2 table and chairs by Hans J. Wegner complement this true family kitchen in the former classroom.

The Architects House

The kitchen was designed in white to contrast the room’s dark gray stone floor. The worktops along the wall and the kitchen island were also designed in white laminate. The laminate worktop on the kitchen island has been extended to create a table complemented by the famous “Wishbone Chairs” from Hans J. Wegner. Ceiling-high tall units complete this fascinatingly simple and yet highly tasteful living space.

Bocci 38 Series Hanging Pendants

Bocci 38 is a surrealistically motivated re-exploration of a technique of making originally developed for a previous project called 28, whereby air is pushed in and out of glass that is intermittently heated and cooled.

In the case of this project, the technique is stretched to the limits of possibility. Large glass spheres are blown, and then a multitude ofwhite cavities are introduced into them haphazardly, intentionally intersecting and colliding with each other. Several of these are deep enough to contain earth and succulent and cacti plantings.

Others are used as housings for lighting elements. There are two or three lightingelements per large sphere, and one or two planters. Electricity and suspension are achieved using stiff copper tubing, which is allowed to tangle and crinkle, seemingly without regard for gravity. Once in a while, these copper tubes loop around satellite white planters, appearing to have escaped from the confines of the lit clear glass spheres.

Miles Redd Interior Designs

Raised in Atlanta, Miles Redd moved to New York to study film at New York University.

More interested in set design, he began working for antiques dealer John Rosselli after graduation, which would serve as a hands-on education in furniture and the decorative arts. Later hired by decorator Bunny Williams, Redd honed his eye as a shopper and design assistant, combing the 26th Street flea market and frequenting the great antiquarians for beautiful finds.

His tiny East Village apartment became a laboratory for his particular brand of cozy glamour: he painted the floor in an emerald green harlequin pattern, stacked books to the ceiling, and hung works of art ranging from his own figure drawings to a 19th century copy of a Velásquez Infanta. This playful mix of high and low, emboldened by color and modern gestures but grounded in practicality, would come to define Redd’s style.

After a brief stint studying painting in Lacoste, France, he returned to New York and began decorating friends’ apartments. One job led to another and in 1998 Redd opened his own office in Noho. At ease working in a variety of styles and settings, he relies on innovation and imagination to create comfortable, elegant interiors that express a client’s personality. Traditional room arrangements find their foil in juxtapositions of surface texture—lacquer and plaster, satin and linen—but without becoming precious. He believes in a pragmatic approach to living well and finds the best collaborations come from a meeting of the minds and a shared sense of humor.

Having completed many New York apartments, Redd has also worked on such diverse projects as a Miami Beach condominium, a ranch in Wyoming and a farmhouse in the South of France. He is currently decorating an Upper East Side townhouse, a couple’s country home in Millbrook, New York, and a Philip Schutze house in Atlanta for a young family. Redd also lends his time to organizations like Housing Works and the Lenox Hill Neighborhood House. His work has been featured in New York Magazine, Vogue, House Beautiful, Elle Décor, House & Garden, W, and Country Life. In 2003, Redd was named creative director of Oscar de la Renta Home.

Patricia Urquiola is the designer who best expresses Moroso’s vision; she has therefore created the main range of the new Bohemian collection.

She has taken a very original approach to classic capitonné work, giving it a revolutionary modern look. Creating emotions. Patricia’s family of products – sofa, bergère, chaise longue and armchairs – have very fluid forms, almost as if they were melting over their frame, creating soft, irregular, enveloping, almost casual lines, where the fabric or leather is fixed to the shell with press-studs.

A classically-shaped sofa appears to be “wearing” a shawl thrown over its shoulders. The capitonné fabric shawl is fixed with press-studs to emphasise the idea of “wearing” an outfit. The seat is covered with various kinds of cushions, fabric layers which alternate technical textiles and faux fur with others inspired by Mongolian rugs. The result is a sophisticated product displaying an almost maniacal research into an extraordinarily rich upholstery which layers different leathers and other materials and mixes cultures and traditions, colours and textile-working techniques.

A form of luxury patchwork for a sofa with a nomadic, global spirit. Very contemporary. A modern slant on a classic. This fresh approach was only possible thanks not least to Moroso’s manual ability and know-how. As if they were working in a fashion atelier, Moroso’s “tailors” treat the fabric with supreme nonchalance, transforming it at will, bringing it to life and giving shape to the designer’s vision.

The house plans thoughtfully set the entry well back from the street, behind a garden and pond, to create a private, welcoming transition into the home. A large vaulted space, which houses the living, dining and kitchen areas, forms the heart of this home. The space is warmed by the use of hardwood floors and naturally-finished wood beams throughout. Natural light illuminates the space through the use of continuous clerestory windows along the north and south sides. Many of these openings are motor-operable to easily access the cross-ventilation the site naturally provides.

A dramatic wood and steel open-tread staircase connects the upper and lower levels. The lower level features a multi-functional space that can be used for a wide variety of family activities and opens to both a view-side deck and a south-facing entertainment area. The entertainment area creates a natural place to gather with built-in seating, a fire pit and a waterfall fed from the pool above. The lower level also houses three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a bar and wine room. The garage is artfully hidden from view on the lower level as is the energy-efficient geothermal heating and cooling system.

On both levels of the home the views are maximized. The inside and outside spaces flow freely from one to the other through the use of oversized windows and wall-to-wall bi-parting doors – design features that together with the energy efficient heating and cooling system and previously noted architectural design features create a timeless sustainable design. Extensive decks on both levels are built of hardwood decking and stainless steel railings for both aesthetic appeal and durability.

This original antique Bérgere chair was found in a flea market in North Paris, and brought back to London to form part of this collection.

The piece was left unrestored and then adorned in turquoise neon giving it new life but without forgetting its journey. This very unique and one-off piece has been authenticated with a brass plaque. This piece is now sold, however similar pieces can be commissioned.
