Modern Day Dating - A Heartwarming Effort to Last Minute Cancelling

Today I’m taking a momentary detour from my usual suggestive fashion posts to analyze a trend in men. I am awfully confused about the dating dilemmas faced by my friends recently.

Why is there such an incredible effort in texts, e-mails, bbms and possibly a phone call (haha, no not really a phone call - a Facebook message would happen sooner) to cancel date after date?

All of this energy is going into ‘avoidance’ techniques, and it just seems so odd.

As Miranda Hobbes so wonderfully discovered on Sex and the City (my immediate go-to reference for life issues), the concept of “he’s just not that into you,” has already penetrated the souls of women everywhere. That’s old news; the message was delivered years ago.

Then why all the hype to cover up the fact that you don’t really want to go on a date?

If you're married, then you're just plain screwed for any good karma, and girls in your address book are just unlucky. If you're truly that busy, then stop making plans. If you have another girl who you'd rather hang with, then stop trying to balance multiple women; you're obviously bad at it.

The most recent last minute date cancellation happened to a close friend yesterday. This was already a second chance, as he had already cashed in on his first one last weekend.

With an extremely dramatic, apologetic text accompanied by sad faces (the modern way to express emotion), he cancelled last weekend with an immediate invitation for dinner this weekend. He concluded his text with “I can’t wait!”

So, last night rolled around and two hours before the date (she had just gotten out of the shower and we obviously had her outfit planned for hours), he cancelled again due to a work obligation (on a Sunday night....?).

Hmm.

The surprising extra effort (or the future jab in the stomach) occurred when he practically begged her to grab drinks after this so-called 'meeting.'

He then continued to state how badly he wants to take her to dinner tomorrow night (this now being tonight).

Well, after no call last night (“I didn’t want to wake you”), what did she end up with tonight?

Another cancellation text.

Today is a Big Day?

I am not a fan of football.

I love beer, can sit through a game and follow it, but to call me a “fan” would just be wrong. I’m not a real sports person in general.

At my first Dodger game, my boyfriend wanted to make sure I was taken care of with alcohol and food. It was very sweet, but I responded with, “I’m fine. I love football….I mean, baseball.” At that point in our relationship, he knew he should probably not waste his efforts in trying to create a sports fan out of me.

As most of the waking world knows, this season has been incredible for the JETS. It has been an exciting ride (so I hear) and I am always tuned in during the second half of the 4^th quarter. I make sure to be very supportive and constantly reiterate how much I love Rex Ryan.

This morning, while eating breakfast with my lifelong JETS fan boyfriend, I said with a confident smile on my face, “So wow, today is a big day!” Proud of my sports-related remark of support, I took a nice, big bite of my bagel. While I was happily chewing, I looked up to see a very disappointed face.

“A big day?.....This is much more than a big day! This is better than Christmas. The JETS haven’t won this game since 1969!”

So oops. Now I know that I need to work on providing a much more enthusiastic, creative phrase when there is a MASSIVE, COLOSSAL game on.

Oh Amsterdam, I Love You

Thank you, Amsterdam, for being so wonderful. Your museums are divine, your food is heavenly, your pastries are the reason I can no longer zip my pants, your beauty is magical and the Dutch are magnificent.

The Dutch culture absolutely intrigues me. All day long, bikes fly by with riders en route to work, or home, or actually, going anywhere. The bike lane in Amsterdam is much more saturated than the streets with cars. I mean, there is no comparison.

I have trouble riding my bike more than like two miles (and let's not even get into how ridiculously slow I am riding uphill); these amazing people ride their bikes EVERYWHERE. Not only are they pedaling with heels, skirts and suits, but they carry things too! I will never forget watching this woman in a long skirt and heels holding one hand behind her, while she balanced a suitcase on the back of her seat. I was so jealous. I can barely balance myself.

You can walk in the street and never once make eye contact with anyone. Unlike the United States and the obsession we, as a culture, have with celebrities and gossip, they live with their eyes straight ahead. Rarely was anyone looking around at anyone else.

We were lucky enough to stumble upon an awesome restaurant server who kindly took a moment to let us know of a local spot to enjoy. He gave us directions to a bar, Zoite. We made it there within 10 minutes of saying, “thank you,” and were so grateful we asked him.

Not only did this lovely, quaint bar have a full alcohol menu carrying a spectrum of Dutch beers, but the bar food included a giant block of cheese with freshly baked bread. YUM. We ordered like five.

The waitress was unbelievably kind and walked us through each beer we tried. Everywhere we went, we felt right at home and were able to speak English to just about everyone.

The beauty of the city is indescribable in words. It is not an exaggeration when Amsterdam is dubbed, “the Venice of North.” The canals take your breath away, and the charm of the architecture, and old boats and bikes will take you back in time. When you walk along the canals at night, all you hear is silent air with a faint sound of water moving in the canals. The lights from the apartments shine onto the water, and the reflection is mesmerizing. It is true bliss.

There is much to do as well. You can visit the Anne Frank house and see her famous writing. I must have stared at the journal for hours.

The flower mart will take you on a beautiful path of flower vendors and is the biggest in the world. If you want to see prostitution out in the open, take a stroll anytime down the streets with a beaming red light. The ladies will be waiting for you behind a clear, glass wall.

Vondelpark creates a peaceful presence in your mind that will remain in your memory forever. The serenity and natural beauty of the park will make your thinking stop (finally). Nothing else matters when you see the reflection of the trees on the wide, open lake.

The Heineken museum was rated the best tourist attraction many years in a row; this museum is a true experience. There is a beer tasting, a walk through the original brewery, a ride, and then being treated to two, fresh and refreshing Heineken beers in a bar setting with other tourists.

You can enjoy the Rijksmuseum which takes you on an incredible journey through Dutch history, and then take a few hours to explore the mind-blowing artistic experience the Van Gogh museum has to offer.

Although people may disagree with our choice to go in winter, I must say, it was very special. The Christmas markets wrap you in warmth and actually give you that nostalgic holiday feeling that I’m sure many of us miss as we get caught up in life. That’s the best way I can describe it. Maybe Amsterdam is my version of the North Pole.

I also visited in the summer three years ago, and it was wonderful to go outside without wearing ten layers. However, I would still recommend experiencing Amsterdam during Christmas. It was extraordinary.

If you get an opportunity to take a trip to Europe, I absolutely suggest making a stop in Amsterdam. Whether you're looking to party with friends, or relax on an extremely romantic getaway, this special city absolutely cannot disappoint any traveler.

I welcome 2011 with open arms! It feels like a breath of fresh air.

It is time to start over; the New Year is our clean slate.

Wherever we leave off (pretty much before the holidays), we can launch ourselves into full motivation mode come January 1^st each year (or maybe January 3^rd).

We can live with more audacity and passion than we had last year, work with more intensity, take risks that we half-heartedly attempted this year, continue projects that we left incomplete, recognize our faults and perfect them into our strengths….

There is no limit to what you can think about for yourself. It’s actually a fun brainstorm that can lead you somewhere you’ve always wanted to be literally,

or figuratively.

So give yourself the gift of goal-setting for 2011. Take some time to reflect on the good, bad and the ugly of 2010 and see how you can turn this new knowledge into something positive for your future.

No one is too young or old to do this, and studies have shown that the best way to go about this is to think “realistically.” We are not going to change overnight, so set goals that you know you can accomplish if you really put your mind to it.

One of my goals for 2010 (which I will continue in 2011) was to be a bargain-hunter and not buy anything at full price.

I stuck to this goal, and it is evident with the story behind my New Year’s Eve outfit. I wanted to buy something new, so I brought some clothes I haven’t worn in over 2 years into a vintage shop, ended up selling them, and was able to use that money to buy an exquisite purple, silk, Diane Von Furstenberg top (vintage) with a gorgeous sterling silver fringe necklace (vintage).

A goal can take you anywhere. Who knew that my commitment to finding a great deal would eventually get me a paying writing job (another goal I set for 2010)?

In November, I was hired as a writer/editor for a bargain-hunter online fashion magazine.

So grab a pen and a pad, and happy daydreaming!

My dog Lady died.

She loved attention, yet loved to be alone, loved to be loved, and loved to rule the house. Bug was a brilliant girl; I knew the moment I met her 9 years ago.

I visited my parents when I was a freshman in college, and came home to this wonderful, medium sized, black, scary dog named “Lady.” The nickname “Ladybug” was adopted rather quickly, and soon after was shortened further to just “Bug.”

She was the cutest thing ever, but was so nervous around people because she had been treated badly in the past. Bug was around 4 or 5 years old (we’re not exactly sure how old she was), and shuddered from being touched. It was really sad, but we were patient and soon gained her trust.

Once Ladybug figured out her “inner circle," she opened up to us and gave us this emotional connection with a dog that almost seemed impossible.

I will miss Ladybug terribly, but our family will always know that we saved her life, covered her with love, and yet, will always know that she gave us so much more.

Bug changed our lives forever and didn’t cost a dime. There are very special dogs out there trying to survive in a shelter or worse, and if you can, you should look into adopting an animal.

We all have them. They’re impossible to avoid. They can be a family member, friend, co-worker....

The Carrie Diaries is such a fantastic extension of the Sex and the City world we all know and love. You can own it, read it as often as you'd like, and the hardcover copy makes a great addition to your nightstand.

I received this book from my sister for my birthday, and burrowed away for three nights to read of the Carrie Bradshaw world prior to NYC, Manolos, cosmopolitans, Mr. Big, and the girls.

Time passed so quickly, that I did not even notice missing a night of True Blood (which is nearly impossible).

I would suggest this as a gift to any SATC fan, and absolutely recommend this book for a plane ride.

Getting a Spa Treatment in Los Angeles?

Visiting a spa in LA is definitely an experience you will never forget. Not only do you feel the warm, Zen-like feeling when you enter each sanctuary, but the weather and palm trees really do help give you the full, 360 degree experience.

You will find that most of the products are organic; Angelenos are huge on everything being ‘natural’ (which is very ironic actually).

Since this is a popular gift and a New Yorker recently asked me about this, I decided to blog about it. So for any visitors, residents, or friends looking to wrap themselves in relaxation or give an awesome present for the holidays, here are my personal recommendations.

My first spa visited: Spa 415 in Beverly Hills

A friend suggested this spa to me in December 2006, two months after I arrived in LA. When I walked in for the first time, I was courted by the lovely owner, Liza. She is warm, personable, down to earth, and unbelievably knowledgeable about the spa world.

We actually got along so great, that each time I came in we would not only discuss new products, but she gave me wonderful advice on life. I felt like Elle from Legally Blonde, who befriended her nail salon lady when she moved to Boston from LA.

So from the start, clearly I was sold.

However, I kept going back because of the undeniably perfect service. Each eyebrow wax was the best I’ve ever gotten, the massage made me relax for the entire month following, and the facial did wonders to my skin.

Their services expand beyond the typical day spa too; they offer nutrition and health, weightloss and more.

I absolutely recommend this spa to anyone who wants to clear your mind and take a mini vacation each time you walk through the door.

Second spa visited: Lulur Day Spa on Robertson

I tried Lulur this past spring when my very good friend gave me a gift certificate.

At first, I honestly could not find the location of Lulur. I was walking up and down Robertson, confused and feeling so stupid, when I finally called the spa for directions.

As it turns out, this spa is not directly on Robertson; it is tucked away in the most precious nook, in a tranquil and floral abyss. I felt so far away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, before I even stepped foot in the spa.

The serene setting continued as I walked through the doors of Lulur. It is smaller and much simpler than Spa 415, but the facial was out of this world. I was in a trance the entire time.

I pirouetted my way out, feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and loving my glowing skin.

Spa Product: Kate Somerville in West Hollywood

I have yet to visit this spa, but I recently received her Intensive Exfoliating Treatment in a gift bag from an event.

It is awesome! My skin felt amazing and my complexion looked polish. I felt like I had a facial (just minus the tranquility).

The spa received mostly 5 stars from about 30 reviews on Yelp (my saving grace since I moved), so I will definitely be trying her services soon.

Budget-friendly spa experience: Raya Spa in West Hollywood

Raya Spa definitely promotes themselves quite well and absolutely secured a niche market of followers. They offer an extensive amount of services for a much cheaper price when compared to most of the spas in LA.

I went twice, and have a mediocre feeling towards this spa.

I had an appointment and they still made me wait for over 45 minutes. It is a spa factory. There is nothing personable, warm or friendly, and I had to wait for my frustration to subside to enjoy the minimal calmness that the facial offered me. They want you in and out.

I definitely didn’t hate the facial, but the overall experience was lacking. If you’re not looking for the true spa experience and simply want a facial for under $70, then definitely try it. However, if you’re like me and are looking to leave relaxed and revitalized, then you may want to look elsewhere.

I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving!

I received a wonderful request last night to write a blog post on what shoes to wear on an airplane. I understand this is a puzzle in itself; where do you find a shoe that can easily slip on and off when you go through security, stay comfortable and warm while you fly, and not look sloppy?

A Look for the Holidays – Lesson by a Hollywood Makeup Artist

I will be taking a little blogging break, so I would like to leave you with this idea for a new look for the holiday season.

A stroke of luck hit one day when I was traveling back to LA from NYC.

I was bumped to first class and had the luxury of finding my seat next to a Hollywood makeup artist.

I immediately discovered her talent when I took one glance at her amazing eye shadow. That one compliment made the next five hours fly by.

For most of the flight she gave me makeup tips, wrote down products I should try, and then invited me to her studio for a full makeup application and lesson.

She worked with Bobbi Brown for 10 years, and two years ago, ran with her own talents and branded herself in Hollywood.

Here are some of the products she suggested with instructions below on how to apply them:

To create a fun, everyday look for the holiday season:

First begin with a clean face.
Start with your eyes, so if any shadow falls on your face, you can easily clean it up before applying your moisturizer/foundation
Begin with the inner corner of your eye towards your nose, and apply the Long Wear Cream Shadow with an eyeshadow brush. (I personally use the brushes from NARS, but there are many good brushes out there).
Once you completely cover your eyelid, take your ring finger and pat the Mica glimmering shadow lightly. Coat the eyelid with one layer of sparkle.
Apply mascara (To be honest, I’ve tried a ton of mascaras, and I find Dior, Chanel and Mac to be my favorite. However, I’ve also have tried Revlon and other CVS brands, and they have been great too. I think it just depends how much you want to spend and how much patience you have with your eyelashes).
Wash your hands well to ensure the makeup is completely off and you will not smudge any on your face.
Now we begin the application of the tinted moisturizer. During the day, I use this instead of foundation. Not only does this mask any imperfections, but it also has been good to my skin and lets it “breathe.” I put a dime sized dot on each cheek, my forehead, chin and nose, and run it in from the inside out to the neckline. Blend as much as you can.
Next I take a dime sized dot of Primer on my pointer finger, and rub it on all of my fingertips so it is as evenly distributed as possible.
I then apply it all over my face using my fingertips only. The Primer helps to keep the moisturizer tightly locked onto your face all day.
Wash your hands again and with the applicator, rub the tinted eye brightener under your eyes to lighten any darkness. Use your ring fingers to blend this in on both sides by lightly dabbing the concealer.
Now take a blush brush and cover the bristles with all of the colors on the shimmer brick (I personally use “Nude,” but you need to select whatever block looks best for your skin tone). Begin with your forehead, and lightly brush the color out and down the perimeter of your face and bring it in right above the cheekbone, and without lifting the brush, bring it back out to the perimeter and down to your chin. So you will be making a “3” on both sides of your face. The key to this product is to create color where natural sunlight would hit your face. These are the accents that usually get the most color.
To finish off this look, grab another blush brush (or wipe this one off with a tissue), and generously cover it with blush (I use “Pale Pink”). Now, smile, and dab the brush onto the apple of your cheeks (while you’re smiling).

She can't really win.

Hopefully the press will tread a little lighter than they have in the past, but so far, that outlook doesn't look promising.

Skin Secrets That Don't Break the Bank

So I just got the news that I will be attending a black tie event on Saturday night. Unlike many people who may find these events burdensome, I love them!

These nights are always an opportunity to mingle, and since I am marketing myself as a freelance writer (or marketing consultant, stylist, etc.), I really want to make sure that I am confident from the time I walk in to the time I leave. Unfortunately, sometimes my skin plays a factor in this equation.

In order to ensure smooth skin on my face and body for a strapless dress, I begin my skin preparation a couple of days before.

Since I was not blessed with naturally smooth skin, I use Proactiv religiously.

I know this may sound like an infomercial, but I swear by it. My boyfriend and old roommate can attest for my insanely long product routine; I always do it even when everyone else is passed out at 4am. You can bet that I will still end the night by washing my face....

I've tried everything for my skin: prescriptions, top NYC/LA spa treatments, tons of facials (don't get me wrong, I LOVE facials, but at the end of the day, the products sold there have not proven to make any significant impact on my skin). Thousands of dollars later, I've still come to realize that Proactiv does the best and most consistently reliable work.

So, I’ve been sticking to this plan since college (with a few detours, but I always come back), and it has been recently affirmed by my very good friend who is in her third year of med school for dermatology, that it works well. I shall go by that, and continue to pay a fraction of the price to keep my skin clear.

So each night, I have a routine with the face wash, toner, and repairing lotion.

I follow those with Avon’s PM moisturizer and eye cream. This is definitely another cost effective way to keep your skin smooth and young. Avon usually has a special every few months to buy two or three items for the price of one. (www.avon.com) And if you're skeptical, check out the reviews...

Twice a week I exfoliate with Avon’s ANEW micro-exfoliant, and then apply a Hungarian mud mask by Alexandria (http://www.studioalexandriala.com/).

This combination is awesome! I have gotten compliments on my skin, and that just has never been my thing, so it may be worth a try.

I then exfoliate my entire body in the shower two to three times a week, and apply a fragrance free moisturizer followed by a cotton ball of alcohol on any problem areas.

That's about it.

Since I've been fortunate to get skin advice along my path, I thought it was worth sharing to anyone out there looking for a new skin routine that doesn't break the bank.

It's much better to smile in pictures than to hide your face.....

Welcome the winter wardrobe….

The Art of Sleeping on an Airplane

Since I live across the country from my family and friends, I frequent LAX and EWR about every other month. Flying days are long, can be quite cumbersome, and can make anyone go crazy from the unexpected delays, loud and careless people...(the list can probably continue for awhile).

So, to make this experience as positive as possible, I have a system set in place that was clearly noticed by another frequent flyer.

As Zach and I walked off our last flight in October, a male flight attendant smiled at me as I exited. Ever so confidently I smiled back, and walked off the plane. As I turned around to see where Zach was, he was also smiling at the flight attendant and it looked like they exchanged words.

When Zach caught up to me, I asked what they spoke about. With a broad smile, he let me know that during the entire flight, I looked like this:

The flight attendant told him to have me teach people how to sleep on an airplane.

So here I am, and I happen to be very proud of my airplane sleeping skills. I also think that this can be very useful during holiday time...

On our first trip together four years ago, Zach and I took an 11 hour flight to London. I fell asleep right after dinner and awoke as breakfast was being handed to me. Literally, I removed my eye mask, adjusted momentarily to the bright lights, and put my hands out to receive eggs and a croissant. Yum. (I also happen to fit in the small category of people who like plane food).

As I was enjoying my delicious meal, I felt Zach’s sharp glare on me the entire time. He could not remotely fathom that I had slept for 8 hours straight. I was fully refreshed and ready to explore London!

So here are my secrets:

The night before you fly, try to get a little less sleep than usual. In my case, this means I get at least 5-6 hours of sleep. This is not as much as my usual 7-8, but enough that I won’t be cranky and super sensitive to annoying people on my flight.
Prepare a comfortable “Travel Outfit.” I have two of these that I will explore further in a future post; however, they consist of leggings, boots, an enormous sweater or a long (down to my knees), fitted, zip-up hoodie. They are easy to remove during the security check, comfortable to fly in for hours, yet do not look like you just got out of bed in case you see a client or something.
Pack yourself a little bag inside your carry-on with everything you need for your flight, so you can easily remove it and leave your carry-on in overhead storage (you want to maximize your legroom).
Inside this bag, I keep everything to keep me at ease throughout the flight: my Bose Noise Cancellation headphones (my saving grace), Ipod, Chapstick, hand moisturizer, book, extra socks (I always get cold) and my cloth eye mask.
My musical choice to begin my airplane snooze consists of: Barry Manilow (this seriously works for me), Led Zeppelin, James Morrison, Dave Matthews, Jack Johnson and Michael Buble. For some reason, they all help put me to sleep – and I’ve tried everything.
I try to be have at least one drink before I fly so I am already relaxed (try red wine or vodka/sprite). They have both treated me well during flights.
Once the plane starts, I usually start a movie or read for about an hour, and as soon as I feel the potential to fall asleep, I lie back, turn the head rest sides in, take the mask down to cover my eyes, and VOILA!

ZZZZZZzzzzzzz…..

And apparently these can work without the eye mask….

Why Are You Not Engaged Yet?

Last night I watched a TLC special on the “future engagement” of Prince William and Kate Middleton. It was actually an enlightening perspective for me. I get annoyed when people ask me when Zach & I are getting engaged. When I say “people,” that’s like maybe 5 people a month. Maybe.

Kate Middleton is actually attacked by the British press and nicknamed, “Waity Katie.”

Not too mention, she is “ordinary,” and they predict that she will not have a close relationship to the Queen and never live up to the expectations of the Royal family.

My goodness. And I hate it when I am tagged in a Facebook photo that I look too pale or my hair looks bad.

Snapshot of a City Sundays – Punta del Este, Uruguay

Ahhhhhhh, paradise.

Who knew that the southern tip of Uruguay would hold the serenity and calmness that most vacationers yearn for during their search for the perfect destination?

As we pulled into the bus terminal, my breath was nearly taken away at the beauty of the Punta del Este. There are over 20 miles of beaches, palm trees, delicious wine (most are imported from Argentina), mouthwatering seafood and unbelievable tranquility with a ton of charm!

Zach and I chose to go in late November due to the unbelievable flight that we managed to snag last minute to Buenos Aires, Argentina (under $600 to fly from LA! I will do a separate post on this another Sunday). This is considered "off-season" for Punta del Este. The streets were basically empty (especially when we arrived in the morning), and the air was silent. It was dream-like.

After experiencing the stillness of Punta del Este, it is tough to imagine the tourist boom that occurs only one week later.

Once the first week of December hits (their beginning of summer), the well-known club scene awakens from its slumber. Each clubbing season is different from the last; the clubs provide mass marketing each year to not leave any avid clubber questioning where to go for the party.

Aside from clubbing, vacationers enjoy yachting, shopping, eating, laying on the beach, and soaking up the relaxed pace of Punta del Este.

The beauty and style is amazing. The locals were absolutely stunning. The beach scene was not like the sunbathers in Santa Monica or the Jersey Shore. These beach goers dressed in the most exquisite beach wear I’ve ever seen, while dripping in class. Almost all women had on tunics over their designer swimwear. Jewelry, sandals, beach bags and all brilliant accessories were also not left at home. The best part was, everyone we encountered was so friendly and helpful (over 90% of the population is European).

If you’re looking for an awesome party with friends, definitely check it out during the summer (our winter). But if you’re looking to really enjoy the peaceful vibe that Punta del Este has to offer, then you may want to try it off season. Either way, I do not think it can possibly disappoint any traveler.

Unfortunately we only had a day to explore this incredible gem, so I am unable to offer tips on where to stay. On my future "Snapshot of a City Sundays," they will include details and opinions on hotels & restaurants. I just wanted to share this special spot right off the bat. I absolutely intend to visit again in the near future.
