Although customary, a feature would’ve been in line after the dress is finished and not while it’s still in the creation process. However, in my excitement with how things turning out, let me give you folks a quick look at the dress I had let Kaye Olfindo design for me.

I love having clothes esp made for me. I probably got this from my mum who, as I was growing up, would have most of her clothes made by a local modista or seamstress/dressmaker. Of course, I got a taste of it early on as I had a number of dresses custom-made for myself (from my highschool graduation dress plus the grad ball to dresses I’d wear to debut parties) I reckon I mentioned that I had a maxi-dress made a couple of years ago (see that dress here: The Modern Filipina). And, sadly, because I had found it difficult to find a decent modista, that dress was the last one I had custom-made, er, until I realised that I actually can go to Kaye. Silly me. So, I did just that and I asked her to make my birthday dress. It’s something I do whenever my birthday comes around. LOL.

It all started when Kaye sent me an email containing images of her Holiday 2009 Collection where I saw a couple of dresses that I really liked. I had set up an appointment to have my measurements taken.

I’m quite glad that Kaye spent time talking to me about design and fabric ideas. It allowed me to tell her what I thought would work and what won’t; what I’d be comfortable with and such. And it’s the first time that I didn’t have a photo of a dress that I want with me to serve as reference, save for that one dress that’s part of her collection, that is.

Then come Saturday (my second stop that event-full day, pardon the pun), between a sandwich and a soy latte, I had come back to her studio in Rockwell to try the dress on. You ladies know what happens during dress fittings yes?

Getting a feel of the fabrics chosen — she worked with two different fabrics for one dress — gave me an idea of how comfortable it’ll be to wear the dress. It still needs a nip here and there (Kaye making sure I get the perfect hem, hehe) before I could bring the beauty home. But with all the pins holding the material in certain places (plus with Manang holding it as well!) made it easier to imagine how it will look like when finished. It made my heart skip a beat.

I was actually scheduled to come in yesterday (Saturday) for another fitting but due to previous appointments, I couldn’t squeeze it in. Though you can bet on it that I’ll be dropping by next week cuz I really can’t wait to see how the dress looks like esp after Kaye’s added her signature embellishments!

If you’re interested to work with Kaye Olfindo, visit kstyled.multiply.com.

We all have different reasons for having clothes esp made. Either because we want uniqueness, the perfect fit or control over what sort of clothes you’d keep in your wardrobe. Personally, though I’d prefer every piece customised, I have to admit that it’s not entirely practical to do so. Also, I’ve been a bit choosy since most of the folks I’ve worked with have produced mediocre results which made me think that I’ll get my money’s worth with what RTW that’s available.

I do have to note that one of the reasons why I would go have clothes made is the blandness of selection in stores, sometimes, and if you choose to go for the fancier pieces, it would mean a heftier price tag. And the latter can’t even offer you the security of the item being unique. So, I reckon if I find a designer with creations that show great workmanship coupled with a reasonable price then I’m sold.

Anyway, any of you ladies have your clothes custom-made on a regular basis? Where do you have yours made? Are you interested in starting to get more into it? What’s stopping you from getting your clothes esp made for you? Sorry if I’m asking too many questions. LOL. I’d really love to hear your thoughts, you see.

Why fortunate? Apart from hearing things first hand from folks behind Nestle Fitnesse, I got to see the wardrobe that’s up for grabs in person. Hehe.

This launch event was my first stop of three scheduled thingamajigs for the day. It was a great way to start my day — makes up for the fact that I’m actually working on a weekend, gah — since I got to see my friend Thea again (sorry you couldn’t join us Hannah!) plus one of the highlights of my day and that’s getting meet (finally!) Kate Torralba! I did mention that one of her dresses is part of Nestle Fitnesse’ ultimate wardrobe, yes?

Thea and our traditional photo op at the photo wall, my token “photographer” for the day

Twas also fantastic seeing Annalyn again. We’ve been talking about getting together for the past few months but our schedules won’t let us so bumping into each other at the event was a real treat esp since she’s got FABULOUS news!

Congratulations again, Ajay! We will have that dinner or coffee soon!

Feeling a bit peak-y and after sleeping a wee bit more than usual, I ended up looking like this for the day. I have to admit that this won’t make it to my favourite outfit photos list (Sorry Thea).

Twas half past 11pm you see and the main reason why we were in that area was because we were looking for a place to eat. I guess we got a little side-tracked. We certainly wasn’t expecting we’d be able to go on a bit of late night shopping.

Apparently, Topshop was one of the few who participated in the late night shopping of the said mall scheduled that weekend. I’m glad since I’m always open to checking out items that are on sale in Topshop. There’s that hope of finding a gem which wouldn’t cost too much. So, yea. This time I stuck with perusing the sale rack and I’m quite happy to report that I snagged a couple of things.

One is a MOTO distressed denim skirt.

It’s not exactly something I’d wear to the office but I have this thing with distressed denim add to it that it’s a skirt. Prepping for Summer? Never too early for that. LOL.

The denim skirt was originally priced at Php 1,995.00 and after enjoying the 50% off the price, I only got it for Php 997.50.

The other piece I bought is a white tank top (which AGAIN can double as a dress all cuz of the length) that had the phrase “ALL OR NOTHING” printed in black down the front. I wasn’t able to take a photo but you’ll get a good look at it when I include a photo of an outfit wherein I wore that very top.

It was originally priced at Php 1,095.00 but twas reduced to Php 547.50.

So, were you able to enjoy some late night shopping at Topshop as well? What sort of goodies were you able to get for yourself? Share!

Because I fell in love with the MAC face powder (MAC Mineralize SkinFinish Natural) which I recently bought, I decided to buy the foundation under the same Mineralize line, the MAC Mineralize SatinFinish Foundation, since I’m in the market to get a new bottle of liquid makeup anyway.

Again, I’m still not used to folks telling me that I ought to get certain makeup in shades lighter than I’m used to. I do know that MAC in 30 (shade) will work well with my skin tone and I have to admit that I was actually looking into getting the foundation in NW30. But again after careful comparison, once applied, it’s looked surprisingly better if I get it in NC30. Even the MAC in-store makeup artist said that I’m better off with NC since NW is darker.

I understand that since I am acidic, I need to get them at least a shade lighter than my skin tone. I’ve been doing that ever since (cuz being acidic isn’t something you can change, yes?). But to suggest a shade lighter than the usual shade I would get and seeing that it works real well can be a bit unhinging. I’ll never claim to have a lighter skin tone, you see. This MAC thing is turning out to be one strange trek of discovery.

**Note that the swatch on the left is a generous amount of the liquid makeup purposely applied as such to show contrast.

MAC Mineralize SatinFinish Foundation

A fluid foundation that blends the natural light-reflecting properties of micro-minerals with a smooth satin finish. Provides a low-to-medium buildable coverage with a slightly luminous look. Contains antioxidants vitamins C and E. Provides everyday SPF 15 sun protection. Long-wearing. Suitable for normal-dry skins.

Initial thoughts include:

Coverage is light but I noticed that it’s easy to build.

Consistency is a bit watery than what I’ve been used to.

In terms of finish, MAC had successfully delivered on its promise — luminous and natural-looking.

I appreciate the SPF 15 and antioxidants.

After roughly around 12 hours of having left it on, my skin started to get a little itchy a bit.

But then again I only road-tested the said foundation last Saturday and exposed it to a humid, semi-sunny atmosphere. I have yet to see fully how things will go under different circumstances. I believe that there are some factors that need to be observed like: how it reacts to present skincare used, stress levels etc (all skin-related issues) before I can truly say that there’s a problem with the said makeup.

Here’s a quick look on how the MAC Mineralize SatinFinish Foundation in NC30 and the MAC Mineralize SkinFinish Natural in Medium looked on me.

What do you folks think? If this combo still doesn’t look natural enough, I don’t know what will. LOL. Anyway, I’ll try to work on a proper FOTD for next time.

MAC Mineralize SatinFinish Foundation retails for Php 1,700.00.

There you go. I guess, this pretty much tells you that I wasn’t able to control myself, yes? Btw, have any of you ladies tried this particular MAC foundation? I’d appreciate it if you can share your thoughts.

LUNA (Php 3,500) Tie-dyed organza and poly-acetate dress with beaded neckline.

I asked Kaye about style inspiration for this year’s Holiday collection: “For this year’s capsule holiday collection, I wanted to make pieces that my clients can wear to the several parties that they’ll be attending. A couple of pieces like the red and the white dresses can be used for both day and night while the the black and midnight blue dresses can be used for night time parties where you need to be glammed up.”

If you want to see how the designs look when worn, check out their video. The video’s concept revolves around the girl changing her outfits every time she changes activities, all in a span of one day.

Early Friday, I had decided to hit a couple of beauty stores before my weekend starts esp since I know my Saturday (yesterday) schedule’s quite full. So, I found myself dragging K yet again in an under-an-hour-shopping trip held in Glorietta.

The main reason why I needed to stop by The Body Shop was the need to replenish my Tea Tree Oil Cover Stick from TBS because mine is about to run out but I spotted a couple of things that I just had to also put in my shopping cart. Gah.

I’ve been meaning to buy new makeup brushes to replace the ones I’ve been using so I thought I’d start with a Foundation brush purchase esp since I use liquid makeup a lot. I’ve been using either disposable makeup sponges or my fingers. I’d occasionally use a brush esp whenever I use the Neutrogena Mineral Sheers Liquid Makeup.

As most of you all know, TBS has this selection of seasonal lip balms and a personal favourite is the Cranberry lip balm so while I was at the counter paying, I spotted it and decided to get one as well, despite the annoying sales lady who clearly lacked comprehensive abilities (sorry but I was thoroughly irritated with her know-it-all attitude but couldn’t answer a simple yes or no question, that’s all.) Good thing I loved TBS otherwise I would’ve ditched the shopping trip just because of this encounter. Anyway, it’s a curious thing that the lip balm is now packed in this tin container. Odd size and shape but it’s a little bulkier than usual if you decide to carry it around.

Tea Tree Oil Cover Stick, Php 349.00
Foundation Brush, Php 995.00
Lip Balm in Cranberry, Php 249.00

How about you ladies? What’s on your beauty list that you know you need to buy real soon? Any of them from TBS?

This was actually my first stop during that fated Tuesday shopping spree (see Shoe binge post). I’ve been putting my trip to a MAC counter for so long that when I did find myself in Glorietta, I just knew I’m not going to deny my need any longer.

I was in the market for a face powder and I’m curious if MAC had anything good for me to try. Of course, I know that MAC is a trusted cosmetics brand but the question on whether it will suit me (in terms of shade and consistency) is still on table.

I’ve experimented on a number of eye shadows from the Fafi collection to individual pots like the Gilded Ash and then there’s me dabbling in their Mineralize set: Eye shadow duo, Blush duo and now this: my very own MAC Mineralize SkinFinish Natural in Medium.

It’s quite interesting how beauty can create a friendly atmosphere. I’m thinking about this pretty lady who struck up a conversation with me when I was perusing the MAC Mineralize selection. I reckon sharing a mutual love for a certain brand (adding to that the fact that she raved about the very product I was looking into getting) makes it easier to talk to each other, stranger or not.

I’m actually surprised that it was suggested that I get it in this particular shade, Medium. Looking at it, I found it too light for my dark skin but I was delighted to discover that it actually does work well with my skin tone. Fascinating. I had initially thought that Medium Plus would suit me better but after careful comparison, a choice had to be made between Medium and Medium Plus in the end. Well, you know which one ended up in my shopping cart.

MAC Mineralize SkinFinish Natural
Face Powder

A luxurious domed face powder with minerals, slowly baked to provide a dimensional yet natural-matte finish. Provides perfect low coverage. Use to set and fix foundation or as a touch-up throughout the day.

Retails for Php 1,600.00 (roughly around $34).

Like a little kid with a new toy, I immediately took it for a spin the next day, hence, today’s FOTD post (er, technically, the photo taken last Wednesday but only got to blog about it today). I’m positively beaming cuz, personally, I happen to think it’s a good buy! I love its finish. I reckon it’ll work even better if I use the Mineralize SatinFinish foundation. And I’m sorely tempted to get the Mineralize SkinFinish as well. It has this high-frost metallic finish which can be used to highlight cheeks or brows or like how it’s described on the MAC site “an overall ultra-deluxe polish to the face.” I like the idea that I’ll have more tools to differentiate each look I’ll create for myself. Ah, well. Let’s see if I can (not) control myself. Anyway, you’ll know either way. Heh.

Twas a Tuesday. A bad day. For the first time in my life I actually took myself to see a doctor. I’m not too keen on the matter. It’s probably due to this thing of having been hospitalised for almost two (2) months when I was 7, countless trips for check ups, medical exams and visits and then, on top of that, a semi-recent experience which involved the ICU (no, I wasn’t the one who got admitted but someone real close). So, there. Need I say more?

Going back to my story, which is a long one BTW so I’m skipping the bit about the reason why I needed to go get myself checked and simply go straight to the binge — the shoe binge.

Aside from the trip to the hospital, I had suffered a disappointment the night before (er, technically twas dawn that same day, Tuesday) so when I woke up — even before I started to prep for work — I had decided I needed retail therapy. I needed my shoes.

I then dragged K to Glorietta and esp headed towards the direction where VNC was situated. I did mention that I heart-ed two (2) other pairs when I bought Almond <s>last Friday</s> start of the month, yes? Those are the shoes I call mine. LOL. Actually, I SO wanted to get the slouchy peep-toe bootie pair back then (<s>Friday</s> Sunday) but I knew it was the least practical choice so I ended up with Almond which I also love. BUT I guess I was meant to get it on a Tuesday, to achieve maximum effect in terms of therapy. Teh slouchy bootie was meant to ease away a bigger nuisance and in this case, make it two. LOL.

I knew that it was more practical to get it in black cuz that way it’ll be easier to wear with my existing wardrobe, however, K agrees with me that the one in Light Brown bests the other. Light Brown it is then.

Claim to fame (or not?) is that it slightly resembles a Steve Madden design (a combination of this, this and this perhaps?)

Retails at Php 2,670.00.

Anyway.

Moving on to the 2nd pair. I was tempted to go for another bootie but I knew I needed to put a bit of “practical” reason in my next choice. I knew I needed something in Black.

Did practicality fly out the window? True enough, it still IS black. At least I got that bit right. As for the rest of the practical reasons, best forgotten. Hehe.

I’ve always been fascinated with this sort of shoe design (see this)— the button detail, which I believe is military-inspired. Yes, I’ve seen it on other shoe brands with modifications of course. Anyway, I was a bit skeptical with the sling-back bit of the shoe design but when I tried it on, I found out that I didn’t mind it as much as I thought I would. It makes it less of a bootie and more of a heeled sandal-type. AND I’m absolutely loving the button detail!

Retails for Php 2,430.00.

There you go. Another shopping trip done in under an hour. Bagged a couple of new VNC shoes and something from MAC. Now, that’s a different story.

As promised (I teased K about wearing it straight from purchase), I wore my new black shoes to work the next day and all I had managed to put together was this look.

I have to admit it looked good when worn with jeans and I found a reason to wear my new Warehouse Tee. I have yet to wear the former with a dress and the latter as one.

So, there ‘ya go. Another t-shirt and jeans outfit.

As promised in a previous post, we’re here to talk about the Designer Wardrobe which can be won in NESTLÉ FITNESSE’s Show off Your Shape promo.

I have to admit I had stared longingly at the pieces that form the Ultimate Wardrobe. In case you missed it, the wardrobe includes following pieces from local fashion designers and global designer brands: Rhett Eala, Religioso, Michi Calica, Kate Torralba, Jun Escario, Hermes, Chanel, and 7 for All Mankind. Personal favourites are the dresses from Kate Torralba and Chanel. Whoever wins this set should know that I’m downright filled with envy. Gah.

Let’s now move on to the fashion notes and style rationale from folks who helped pick out the prized wardrobe.

Disclaimer: The article that follows is not authored by Sasha Manuel of Style Manila.

Manila’s Most Fashionable Pick the Ultimate Wardrobe

They set the trends, penalize fashion les faux pas and basically rule Manila ’s style scene with an iron — albeit manicured — hand. Yes, they’re the undisputed headliners of fashion– but did you ever stop to think of what the country’s top fashion editors and columnists would come up with if they were to assemble one wardrobe?

Yes, you got that right. They would come up with no less than the Ultimate Wardrobe.

But the Ultimate Wardrobe can’t be bought—and no, maxed out credit cards won’t cut it either—it can only be won in NESTLÉ FITNESSE’s Show off Your Shape promo.

14 days to Fashion and Fitness

The great Chanel czar Karl Lagerfeld said it himself: “Fashion is the healthiest motivation for losing weight”. And with the NESTLÉ FITNESSE’s Show off Your Shape’s Ultimate Wardrobe, you and your friends can flaunt your health and fashion dedication to the envy of the metro’s style mavens.

With your team of 2-8 members committed to the 14-day NESTLÉ FITNESSE meal plan (coupled with a healthy exercise routine), inch your way towards winning that coveted designer wardrobe. Simply post your progress on www.fitnesse-14days.com while following the 2-week low-fat, whole-carb regimen of replacing breakfast and one other meal (either lunch or dinner) with NESTLÉ FITNESSE, and show the whole world as you successfully shed off those pounds!

Need inspiration in your quest for the perfect shape and style? Here’s a sneak peek at the Ultimate Wardrobe, as chosen by Audrey Carpio, Donna Cuna Pita, Bianca Consunji, Jenni Epperson, Joyce Fernandez, Rissa Mananquil, Pauline Juan and Isabel Roces:

High End with a Capital “H”

With its flagship Philippine store opening soon, Hermès is making a lot of buzz; given this, it’s no surprise that an Hermès belt made the cut to the Ultimate Wardrobe shortlist. “There’s no question as to what the H stands for when you see it on a belt. It’s simultaneously cheeky and brash, yet instantly adds a touch of class to your shirt-and-jeans outfit,” says Audrey Carpio. Joyce Fernandez agrees and says that an Hermès belt is ‘very versatile’ and can be used to cinch dresses or with slacks or denim. Meanwhile, Jenni Epperson sums it up nicely when she quips: “This signature accessory spells high-end with a capital H.”

Channeling an Icon

‘In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different” – or so said Coco Chanel, the legendary woman behind the iconic Chanel brand.

And all 8 editors agree that ‘different’ will be the least of what the owner of the coveted Chanel dress will be once she wears the said piece. Bianca Consunji considers Chanel to be the ultimate symbol of luxury. “Chanel’s a classy, globally known brand that just shouts ‘status symbol.’ While Audrey Carpio considers it to be a right of passage for every fashionista: “A Chanel dress is not just a dress. Owning one is a sartorial rite of passage into the history of couture and a statement that says you are serious about fashion.”

From Fashionista to Fashionalista
Would you have thought of the Philippine map as fashionable? Maybe—if you were Rhett Eala, that is.

And it is exactly this unique ingenuity which elevated a Rhett Eala creation into the Ultimate Wardrobe. “He’s one of my favorite designers,” shares Rissa Mananquil. “He’s fashion’s big innovator, thinker and provocateur. Isabel Roces, on the other hand echoes the sentiments of Rissa. “Rhett has always been my favorite local designer. His style is feminine, elegant and comfortable. His designs are always a hit, as proven by his widely popular My Pilipinas shirt.”

From Weddings to Everything

Michi Calica guarantees the best fitted wedding dresses in the country, but as our top fashion mavens affirm, Michi Calica goes beyond weddings to everything else in between. “ Michi Calica’s clothes are sure to be noticed in any party. Her vibrant prints and bold colors lighten the room as well as your spirits,” observes Isabel Roces. Meanwhile, Pauline Juan notes that Michi’s “feminine frocks and are ode to Old World glamour but always with a modern touch.”

Aside from Michi Calica, Hermès, Rhett Eala and Michi Calica, other items included in the Ultimate Wardrobe come from Kate Torralba, Jun Escario, Religioso and 7 For All Mankind.

The Nestle Fitnesse 14 Days to Show off Your Shape will kick off on November 14, Saturday, from 9am, at Greenbelt Park, Makati, with the voting period lasting from Nov. 15 to Dec. 3. And as adjudged by Manila ’s top style icons, the winners of the Ultimate Wardrobe will be announced on December 10, 2009.

Hermes Belt. “The Hermes belt itself is very covetable and versatile and can be paired used to cinch dresses or with slacks or denim,” Joyce Fernandez.

Jun Escario. His creations are a marriage of sexy and elegant. I love how his pieces are always head-turning but classy… You seduce as you breathe,”– Rissa Mananquil.

It’s a brief report on the Holiday 2009 Trends from The Ramp and here’s their list narrowed down to 10 with Teresa Herrera working it to jump start style ideas —

Embellishments

Always. At least, that’s what I believe. Makes an outfit more interesting, creates that personal touch on style, spices up an otherwise boring piece. It’s time to have fun with fashion!

Peplum

This bit has been on the style radar since mid of this year and I reckon with how some trends go, finding traction can be tricky esp in a country whose exposure to style has been relative to resources and comfort; latter being more of a hindrance than inspiration. Sadly.

Strong Shoulders

With the rising popularity of the 80s fashion era, the pads are making a major comeback, particularly in dresses. Another variation to this particular trend is the use of ruffles. Dear me, that too is SO 80s.

Bib Necklaces

Did you know that this accessory was popular back in 60s? I reckon I mentioned having inherited my mum’s bib which she wore with her formal dress when she was Hermana Mayor and when she attended her University Graduation Ball with my dad. If I get around to fixing the bib, I’ll work on getting the old photos scanned so I can blog about it.

Jackets

Because the weather’s changing? Are we talking about boyfriend blazers (but we know that’s not new) or any sort and just adding that other layer to create a look for the Holidays? Ah, well. I have to admit that this is the season to fully utilise and optimise the money you spent (or will be spending) on them jackets. That little chill is enough reason to don one.

Statement Shoes

And I’d like to call them impractical shoes. Gone are the days when you’d hear your mum’s voice when you’re out shoe shopping (er, is that just me?). Instead of making a beeline towards the ladies footwear in a nearby department store to replenish your stock of loafers and black low heeled pumps (no offense!), you’re finding yourself drawn to the more spirited and bright-hued pairs in specialty shoe racks and stores. Sometimes, it’s best to put your best foot forward. (SORRY! I just couldn’t resist! LOL)

Clutch Bags

Will these babies ever go out of style? Every fashionable lady should own at least one. I mean, would you really bring a tote to a club, let alone a formal? I shudder at the idea.

Jewel Tones

To each his own, I say. I’m not the sort that sport colourful pieces so I can’t really imagine going for these hues. I’m not closing my doors though. Since I know there are time when I would be required to wear a colour that I wouldn’t normally wear like how the shoe lady made me wear a tea-length strapless dress in Royal Blue. It was a pain to find a pair of shoes which will work perfectly with it. Loved that dress though!

Metallics

It’s more on velvet and leather now but I reckon we’re still enjoying the long tail. I’d go for satin and sequins (then again the latter’s so last year) plus the occasional glitter here and there but I’ll leave the shiny stuff to fashion accessories than seeing it on clothes. Personal opinion.

Cut-outs

Funny ow this trend started out in swimwear then crossed-over to apparel. Interesting. I wonder how far this one goes.

So, ladies, does this mean I’ll be bumping into you over at The Ramp (particularly the one in Glorietta)? Just make sure not to quote me when you find yourself in a situation wherein you need to explain to your mum, husband, or boyfriend why you’re heading to the mall okay? I kid. Cheers to a stylish holiday! Happy shopping, folks!
