Surreal Street Art at Dulwich Festival in London

The Dulwich Festival, an event that brought together the biggest names in street art to create huge murals inspired by classic works found in England's oldest art gallery, the Dulwich Picture Gallery. Old Masters like Rembrandt van Rijn, Nicholas Poussin and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo were given a special homage as the current leaders in street art remixed their esteemed predecessors' works. For nine days, visitors flocked to south London to see how contemporary street art and classical art could combine to create something groundbreaking.
A group of world famous street artists were given free rein to, not only take over one building's outdoor walls, they were also invited to paint all of the rooms inside the house. The Art House on Lordship Lane, which was set to be demolished in April, was left standing a little while longer, or just for this event.

I was a kid growing up in the 80's so there is something about the 80's fashion, movies and music that puts me in such a good mood. Remember the Goonies? Vanilla Ice? I remember I went to see Vanilla Ice when I was 7 years old and it was amazing! Also I remember dancing to can't touch this by MC Hammer with my cousins, some of you probably were even younger!

Stop dreaming. 6 Tips to make it happen.

Dreaming is good, it takes us to different places where all seems to look pretty good, it takes us to the lifestyle that perhaps we want to achieve...
Now, this won't happen just by thinking about it, you have to take action too.
I don't want to sound like a twat or like I'm preaching in here but what I've learnt is all about baby steps, that you can add to your routine.

1. Define your dream job or goal.

It's pretty hard to get to somewhere if you don't know where you want to go to begin with.
What is your dream job? You want to be a fashion journalist, illustrator, photographer, you want to set up your own business...If you aren't sure yet, it's ok. Some people find it straight away for others takes us a bit more time (I will write another post about it)
If you are doing already your dream job, what is your next goal? Define it and write it down.

2. Do what you dream of doing as often as you can.

Like everything, the more you do something the better you get. If you want to get notice and really stand out , you need to spend time learning new skills.Start with committing a few hours a day building experience or perhaps making your portfolio.

3. Do some research.

It’s worth taking the time to check the work of others. This is useful not only as an opportunity to check out the competition but also to see where your field is heading. See who’s new and what’s popular and what you can take from that to boost your own work.

4. Daily Networking and social media.

You don't have to be all day in facebook or twitter (in fact this is a big reason for not getting things done) but chatting or commenting to 3-5 people everyday makes a big difference without overwhelming your routine. Sometimes is just as simple as asking people how they did it. Most people are very helpful and like to share their own experinces. Talk to people that are doing what you woud like to be doing, show them your work and get some feedback plus it is always nice to meet like minded people anyway!

5. Daily Self- Promotion.

This is the most important it is almost as important as doing things and this is the one I personally struggle the most.I'm self- employed so if would not send emails or phone people. I would not get any work at all. Clients, magazine editors, publishers, etc.. aren't going to come knocking at your door to ask if you want to work for them. YOU have to let people know about you.

6. Be creative.

Be creative in the way you present yourself. Whether it is with your business card, CV, portafolio or email. How many CVs you think fashion magazines, agencies, galleries receive daily? And most CVs look pretty boring so make yours stand out with different format, shape, paper, medium, colour...

I believe this daily extra effort is what makes the difference between dreaming and making it happen.

Along history we've seen people being successful doing what they love or believe, this is not something impossible to achieve, so what is the exact formula to do what you love and be successful? The answers is simple: just keep trying, don't give up. Why? Seems quite exhausting to keep trying sometimes... but what we don't see is that most people that have achieve something amazing in their fields is because they never stop trying, they didn't become successful overnight.

Here are 20 examples of amazing people that didn't give up, there is more but these are my favourites:

1- Elvis Presley
In 1954, Elvis was still a nobody, and Jimmy Denny, manager of the Grand Ole Opry, fired Elvis Presley after just one performance telling him, "You ain't goin' nowhere, son. You ought to go back to drivin' a truck."
But he became one of the most popular musicians of the 20th century, he is often referred to as the "King of Rock and Roll" or "the King"

2- Albert Einstein

He didn't speak until age four and didn't read until age seven. His teachers labeled him "slow" and "mentally handicapped. He failed to reach the required standard in several subjects for the Swiss Federal Polytechnic, but obtained exceptional grades in physics and mathematics.
He later won the Nobel prize in physics.
His great intellectual achievements and originality have made the word "Einstein" synonymous with genius.

3-Winston Churchill
He failed the sixth grade. He was defeated in every public office role he ran for.
Then he became the British prime minister at the age of 62.

4- Marilyn Monroe
Her first contract with Columbia Pictures expired because they told her she wasn't pretty or talented enough to be an actress. She kept plugging away and is one of the most iconic actresses and sex symbols of all time.

5- Abraham Lincoln
He started numerous failed business and was defeated in numerous runs he made for public office. 6- The Beatles

7-Beethoven

He was incredibly awkward on the violin and was often so busy working on his own compositions that he neglected to practise. Despite his love of composing, his teachers felt he was hopeless at it and would never succeed with the violin or in composing. Beethoven kept plugging along, however, and composed some of the best-loved symphonies of all time–five of them while he was completely deft.

8- Bill Gates

He drop out of Harvard to start a business with Paul Allen but this early business didn't work, while this early idea didn't work, Gate's later work did , creating the global empire that is Microsoft.

9- Socrates

In his own time he was called "an immoral corrupter of youth" and was sentenced to death. Socrates didn't let this stop him and kept right on, teaching up until he was forced to poison himself. Socrates now reminds as one of the greatest philosophers of the Classical era.

10- Charlie Chaplin

His act was rejected by executives because they thought it was too obscure for people to understand. Eventually he became a worldwide icon through his screen persona "the Tramp" and is considered one of the most important figures of the film industry.

11- David Bowie
He might be a massive music icon now but it took him 10 years of several failed albums until he created Ziggy Stardust. What Lady Gaga is doing now, he did it 40 years ago, in those days it took a lot of guts for a man to come out wearing make up, women clothes and bright red hair. He is consider a major figure in the world of popular music for over four decades, and is renowned as an innovator, particularly for his work in the 1970s.

Perhaps you already know about this project, because it's everywhere! This project started 2011 when the the artist JR was announced as the winner of the 2011 TED Prize with his talk: 'Use art to turn the world inside out'. After that he made a massive impact encouraging people to take part. JR wanted to include the public in the artistic process and ”transform messages of personal identity into pieces of artistic work.” As he told the New Yorker magazine, “Now I am just the printer.”

INSIDE OUT gives everyone the opportunity to share their portrait and make a statement for what they stand for. It is a global platform for people to share their untold stories and transform messages of personal identity into works of public art.

I wanted to try the wheat- paste technique in my house with this poster I did ages ago of David Bowie. I did the mixture which is only flour and water! and pasted the poster in my patio and in one of my kitchen chairs. The one in the patio I don't know how long will last, but at the moment is pretty much well pasted to the concrete. The chair wasn't as successful because the chair has varnish, but if the wood is rough will defiantly work.

In the first paragraph of this post I added the link to the project and the TED TALK he did, if you have time watch it is really fun and inspiring!

News| Good bye Style Marmalade

The 'style' name in the blog was something I no longer felt was part of what I wanted to share in this blog. I enjoy sharing my personal style but style isn't the only route I want for this blog, so I made the decision to give it a twist and change the concept and name even though the url and facebook page stays the same, I can't change that! :P

My aim with this twist is to promote other creatives and creativity, showcasing all kinds of projects, ideas, stories, tips. I'm not an expert and I'm still trying to figure it out but I hope my process and inspiration helps people to feel inspired and motivated.

Our own creative work is part of a much larger cultural conversation, sometimes we're inspired by people working in the same field, sometimes in other fields entirely, the important thing is to never stop learning from one another.

I will show a bit of my personal style still but certainly this won't be the main subject of this blog.

Thank you for your support until now, I hope you will follow this new journey with me.

One of the things I love about blogging is to find talented people worldwide just at mi fingertips, yes that is the beauty of Internet.

This is how I meet Meriem Rawlings the creator of Hanout.

Hanout was born after Meriem spent several years with her British husband in London helping to enrich her world, blending and mixing genres.

Now located in Marrakech, Meriem is surrounded by a team of talented artisans making arabic beautiful finishes and hand-made ornaments for the brand.

A lot of the items are made with embroidery, beading, flowing cuts, color overlay and materials, Hanout revisits the ancient techniques that are an integral part of Moroccan culture.

She kindly sent me some items, one of them was this gorgeous jacket, love the bohemian feel with the plaid and fringe details combined with the high fashion silver sleeves.

7 easy daily habits that will make you feel better

This list is about small and simple changes everybody can do and can help to make you feel better inside and out.
Sometimes we tend to have this black or white way of thinking and whenever we want to change something in our lives we want immediate big changes that never seem to happen because we want drastic results the next day but we don't realise that making simple daily changes in the long run are extremely beneficial.

1.- Wake up 10-15 min. earlier.

This might sounds a bit rubbish, I mean surely sleeping more is better but having this extra time for yourself is very important. Often we rush out of bed get dress, leave the house to go to work with our mind still in our pillow.
Having that extra time on your own enjoying your coffee or just organizing your mind a bit will really set you for the rest of the day.

2.- Make up your bed.

If you are really organized you unconsciously understand this principle, but if you are like a me, I sometimes make my bed and sometimes don't depending on how late I am. Now, I try to do my bed no matter what, whether I'm late or not, whether I'm working from home or not because only takes to me less than a minute to do it anyway and gives me this small sense of achivement early in day.

3.- Drink more water!

Ha! I bet your saw that one coming! But yep! Drink more water. If you find plain water a bit boring squeeze some lemon or mint. Pick a nice crystal bottle to have next to you all the time so you won't forget to drink it. I guarantee that by increasing your intake of water your skin will look better and you'll lose some extra pounds too.

4.- Eat more omega 3!

Yes! Eat more of this magic fish juice or “brain food”, eating oily fish or taking Omega 3 oil or capsules is extremely beneficial. I personaly buy the oil bottle and take 2 tablesppons a day.
Being a “good fat”, Omega 3 will be instrumental in ensuring a high enough absorption level of fat soluble vitamins A, D, E and K, needed for resistance against infection, healthy skin, eyes, heart, circulation, blood clotting, strong bones and helps you burn the "bad fat" :)

5.- Sleep More!

This is a bit contradictory from point 1 but going to bed half an hour earlier will make you feel more relax and focus the next day.

6.- Have flowers around.

Flowers are a beautiful thing to have around your house or in your desk. Flowers will put you in a good mood every time you see them. I try to buy a small bunch of flowers every week to have around the house and honestly they bring so much positive energy.

7.- Do something nice for someone.

This is the most import of all. Create the habit of helping someone everyday, from giving up your sit on the train to phoning your grandma and asking how she is doing etc.. It could be the smallest thing but helping others is derived from the sense of continuity humans feel as parts of a whole. I believe helping others is self healing too.

One of the most timeless pieces has to be the black dress. For the smart occasion you can't go wrong, is elegant, sophisticated and is an instant slimming.
My only tips to wear a black dress would be to find the right shape for your body and style. I personally prefer a minimal style with a nice cut or with a contrast fabric like in the middle dress. I love the contrast shiny fabric in the collar.
Also finding the right accessories is very important, if the dress is minimal you can wear a nice statement necklace or clutch bag.
The heels have to be delicate but make sure that you can walk and dance on them, there is nothing worst than seeing a woman walking badly in high heels you have to walk confident in your heels and last but no least do not forget to shave your legs!

Art| Hands project in Barcelona

Art for me should not be only about aesthetics. Art should be a medium to express what is around affecting us, injustice, prejudices, violence etc.. a strong voice that make us reflect.

Artists Octavi Serra & Mateu Targa, with help from Daniel Llugany & Pau Garcia, are behind the project Hands, a manifestation against the current economic crisis in Spain that, along with Greece, are the most affected countries in the European Union with record-high levels of unemployment.

This street art installation with socioeconomic commentary through the placement of white cast hands doing a variety of things in conspicuous places throughout the streets of Barcelona including: making a finger-gun by an ATM toward its user; prying into a payphone coin slot; or dangling a noose.

Big hugs to all the people is having a difficult times with unemployment.

DIY| Quirky print

This DIY is similar to this one and this one.
Since I did the chatty jumper gif a few weeks ago I wanted to have this quirky print in something so I went on ebay and looked for fabrics and I found this one for only £2.50 a piece. The sweatshirt is an old one I bought ages ago in a charity shop for £1.

It is like making a collage in clothes or sticking stickers the only tip is to buy fray stop glue this as the name says will stop the fabric from fraying and you can glue it to the top with fabric glue and you can wash it but with cold water only otherwise it can come off.

Why I believe creativity improves confidence

I couldn't agree more. Creativity is the best tool that we all have to express who we are just remember when you were a kid must kids love drawing, dancing, singing, cooking, building, etc..They enjoy these activities because they can express themselves and generally feel happy whenever they do these.
So why we stop? Somewhere along the line we seem to stop because we are too busy with our 'proper job' and why we should invest time in something that will not provide enough money to pay the bills?

Art isn't only in galleries and museums, art is everywhere. Art connects your inner self with the exterior, not only the things that make you earn money are important, I believe we feed our spirit when we do all those things that we used to love when we were kids.

Everybody is creative but like Matisse said: "Creativity takes courage"
Write, paint, sing, cook, dance etc.. making things will make you feel great you don't have to be 'perfect' and do everything in the 'correct' way, must of the greatest artist didn't follow the rules and certainly didn't care what people thought. The most important thing is to make things you love and often.
Confidence isn't in a new pair of shoes. Confidence is in what you make of your life everyday not by working in a job you hate or procrastinating everything. Your confidence grows when you make things you love, when you are creative, when you take action.
P.S= I tend to procrastinate so basically I wrote this for myself!

STYLE| CRES. E DIM. JACKET

Perhaps not the best idea to make an outfit post alongside models! But I guess is nice to see how a designer item looks in normal people! A couple of weeks ago I was contacted by CRES. E DIM. a korean brand made by Kim Hongbum that is making a lot of fuss out there, I was so pleased they did because opened my eyes to this great brand!

CRES. E DIM. process and aesthetic, with its various and continuous silhouettes overlapping the human body with fabrics of varying texture, color, and shapes. Kim is inspired by architecture and general street life and fashion, and this is apparent in his layered looks. CRES. E DIM. has appeared on the runways for the New York Collections, when he was chosen as one or five designers to represent Korea for S/S and F/W 2013.

The jacket I'm wearing from CRES. E DIM. is cleverly designed, half cape half jacket with a detachable layer the jacket can be transformed into a waistcoat too, pretty clever right?
Minimal, futuristic with an 80's touch, what do you think of this brand?

Yayoi Kusama is perhaps Japan's best-known living artist. Kusmaa's art has an almost hallicinatory intensity that reflects her unique visiob of the world, wheter through a teeming accumulation of detail or dense patterns of polka dots.

My son did a brilliant easter card for me this morning, the inspiration for this animation came out of his card. I love how kids draw it's very interesting the way they see things, they are not worry about making mistakes they just draw what they 'see' with freedoom and joy.

I want to wish you a great weekend full of joy whatever that is whether is spending time with your family, overeating chocolate, praying, getting wasted or being plain lazy... Enjoy!

Styling the monochrome trousers

Hello beautiful people! I took these photos indoors with my portable studio, as you can see the quality of the photos isn't great I need to get better lighting, my studio is in the basement so it is very dark indeed!
As you might notice the weather has been sooo unkind lately and is starting to piss me off a bit, still I wanted to create 3 spring outfits and I guess I will save these outfit ideas when the weather gets better because at the moment is to cool to even think what to wear!
The 3 outfits involve the same monochrome trousers as the base, then I add a bit of print and a bit of pop colour with some accessories and shoes. I hope you like them and let me know your thoughts! Laters!

Back in February, when I went to Scoop International Fashion Show at the Saatchi Gallery in London, I saw these pieces and immediately they caught my attention because they looked great and I realised that they were made out of bottle tops, the pieces were so well made that you almost can believe they are made basically out of rubbish. These handmade pieces aren't only beautiful, they look fashionable and there is an amazing cause behind them. The Bottletop Foundation supports young people through education projects, which empower them to take control of their lives. Bottletop trains females from developing countries with new skills to provide more young people with education trough the Bottletop foundation. Through a design collaboration with Mulberry they became international best sellers.

David Bowie is coming to town.

It is very official that David Bowie is back with his awesomeness and new single plus exhibition at the Victorian & Albert museum in London.
Bowie has not performed live since 2006, and has not released a new record for the past nine years

The exhibition, at the Victoria & Albert museum will run from March 23th to July 28th 2013, with and insight of the ways in which Bowie influenced the music industry, as well as how his sound and style changed over the duration of his career.
