When Solo launched its first ever Pinoy Cartoonist Memorabilia featuring Larry Alcala’s Slice of Life last year, it was a show stopper. Many people took a trip down memory lane remembering the witty and playful comic characters of Alcala’s Slice of Life. Young and old remember their Sundays looking for the iconic caricature face of Larry Alcala among his cartoon drawings at the Sunday magazine. It is refreshing to see how Alcala’s Pinoy Cartoons are being celebrated and re-introduced to today’s youth as part of Filipino pop culture.

This creative collection has got us all hooked! Due to insistent demand, SOLO is brings out another innovation, its 2^nd installment of the well-loved Pinoy Cartoonist Memorabilia series. This time it features no less than the greatest work of the Father of Philippine Cartoons, Tony Velasquez’s KENKOY.

Antonio "Tony" Velasquez, the Father of Philippine Cartoons, created Kenkoy way back in 1929. Long before the era of the movie stars and showbiz celebrities, there already was a Philippine pop icon named Francisco Harabas, more popularly known as Kenkoy. As Tony Velasquez described him, “He is always pusturyoso”. He was a debonair and his trademark fashion sense was Western influenced: decked in suspenders, charol shoes, double breasted suit, baggy pants, a sailor hat, and a slicked back hairstyle. Kenkoy is considered the most influential comic strip in the Philippines and most successful because of the wittiness and humor, as well as his antics, colonial way of thinking, and carabao-english. Kenkoy gained massive following that he was adapted into movies in 1950s-60s and musical act in early 90s.

This year, old meets new as Solo Pinoy Cartoonist Memorablia takes timeless Kenkoy comic strips and mixes it up on trendy silhouettes and fabrics with different treatments such as foil printing, embroidery, embossed printing, flocking, high density printing and washed effect. The collection consists of His&Hers graphic tees, polo shirts, woven tops and dresses, men’s long sleeves, shorts and accessories such as stainless necklaces and slingbags, gift sets like watches, vanity sets and lighters and will hit Solo stores in September. In 1886 a German watchmaker named Ottmar Mergenthaler changed the world by inventing the Linotype machine. Called “The Eighth Wonder of the World" by Thomas Edison, the Linotype revolutionized printing and society.

Suddenly, newspapers could be printed daily, books could be produced faster and cheaper, and one typesetter could do the work of six men composing type by hand. The Linotype sparked an increase in speed of communication that can only be compared to the invention of the internet. It can be said that the Linotype was the Twitter of 1886.

Although these machines were revolutionary, new technology began to supersede the Linotype in the 1960s, and over the following decades they were scrapped and melted down by the thousands. Today, very few machines are still in existence.

Advanced technology for a specially crafted hardware

VAIO S Series is preinstalled with various applications and utilities and most of them launch at one touch of a button. Just push the ‘WEB’ button for Quick Web Access and expect speedy access to the web browsing. Click the ‘VAIO’ button to view the Media Gallery that lets you enjoy and organize your photos, videos and music in a fun and easy way. There is also a dedicated ‘ASSIST’ button allowing one-touch access to VAIO Care which simplifies basic maintenance and troubleshooting tasks to keep your VAIO in good condition. Puey Quinones : A Designer Confession

More than ever, a public scandal causes a famous individual to lose everything he had worked hard for. Previous unending words of praises suddenly turn into phrases of dismay, disappointment and even denouncement of association. In the very exclusive and oftentimes unforgiving circle of the social elite, judgment is easily casted long before light is shed on the issue.

Take the case of one toast of the town designer. Puey Quinones is the top choice of celebrities, society figures and the rich crowd for wedding gowns. The testimonials of these people who were impressed by his talent catapulted him to A-list status. It was very recently that the man famous for his wrap-arounds and avant-garde designs became the subject of ridicule. It started with one photograph tagged by a lot of people on Facebook, and soon enough, everyone was pointing fingers. Suddenly, everyone has something to say.

In the August Issue of MEGA, the Philippines’ best fashion magazine, the man in question opens up to no less than the President and CEO of Mega Publishing Group, and Editor-in-Chief of MEGA Sari Yap for the first time to talk about the incident. “I agreed to do the interview only because of Sari,” Puey says. It is never easy to go public and admit your wrong deeds, but Puey chose to brave the odds and asked for an apology to those of whom he let down. In the said interview, he also shared that he didn’t like to prolong the agony anymore so he opted to say sorry than deny the allegations.

What does it take to make a scandal? Simple! But to erase the stigma of the scandal will take a lot more than the usual select all-delete-your-inbox command. Puey may have done some things wrong, but to err is human. Coming out clean by admitting his fault is the start. It is a long way indeed, but he is starting a new journey the right way.

Mid-Century Modern Design Masters

Design masters & fellow peers in their prime, beautifully captured in a time that was aesthetically crisp, uncluttered and innovative. George Nelson, Edward Wormley, Eero Saarinen, Harry Bertoia, Charles Eames and Jens Risom for Playboy Magazine, July 1961.

The Tulip chair was designed by Eero Saarinen for the Knoll company of New York City primarily as a chair to match the complementary dining table. The chair has the smooth lines of modernism and is experimental with materials, and is considered a classic of industrial design.

Introduced in 1946 the Nelson platform bench was part of George Nelson's first collection for Herman Miller and still stands as a benchmark of modern design. Like much of Nelson's work, the platform bench has clean, rectilinear lines, reflecting his architectural background and his insistence on what he calls "honest" design--that is, making an honest visual statement about an object's purpose.

Harry Bertoia’s 1950 experiment with bending metal rods into practical art produced a revered collection of seating, including the exquisite Large Diamond chair. Innovative, comfortable and strikingly handsome, the chair’s delicate filigree appearance belies its strength and durability. In Bertoia’s own words, “If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes through them.”

The Eames Lounge Chair and ottoman, correctly titled Eames Lounge (670) and Ottoman (671) were released in 1956 after years of development by designers Charles and Ray Eames for the Herman Miller furniture company. It was the first chair the Eames designed for a high-end market. These furnishings are made of molded plywood and leather. Examples of these furnishings are part of the permanent collection of New York's Museum of Modern Art.

This chair, of simple wood construction using surplus military webbing, was designed by Jens Risom for Hans Knoll, before Risom entered the Army during World War II. It was the basis for Knoll's first line of products introduced in 1942, virtually the only modern furniture available during the war in the US, and was patented in 1945.
