The Swedish House Mafia have just released their official music video for their big tune “One (Your Name)” that features Pharrell Williams. That’s all great and all, the tune is massive, but more interestingly though is that the video is essentially a 4 minute commercial for the upcoming, unreleased Teenage Engineering OP-1, a synthesizer/MIDI-controller that touts wireless syncing, a ‘tape’ feature, and more.

It’s no surprise to see the OP-1 in the House Mafia’s new video due to it’s color LCD screen with a stylish interface display (in arpeggio mode numbers flash on the screen), diminutive size, sleek iconography for the buttons, and almost toy-like colors. However, a toy is the last thing it is. Previews show it’s a strong instrument, built with USB connection, wireless sync, audio out, several audio channels, drag and drop functionality for sampling audio files, and more. Teenage Engineering showcased the little dude at NAMM recently, and have been slugging away at making it better recently announcing the ‘tape’ feature.

The Tape feature (shown above) is a recreation of recording to tape built-into the synth itself. So you have some DAW basics built in already to this bad-boy. The OP-1 has twelve minutes of recording time in normal tape speed and 4 tracks for you to showcase your genius on.

With Spain firmly holding their first World Cup title, everything in South Africa is winding down from the insanity that is one of the world’s most-beloved sporting events. But over here in Northern Hemisphere, summer is just getting started, and in the one month of the tournament (and the months preceeding it), there was a lot of fantastic World Cup inspired music released. Here’s a small list of our favorites that we’re sure you’ll hear at clubs or parties.

The New York Dutch Masters – Voodoozela

If you’re familiar with Dutch house, you’ll already know what this track roughly sounds like. The World Cup twist, if you didn’t guess from the name, is that the main melody is made up of vuvuzelas (you know, the annoying trumpets distracting everyone in the world at every damn match). “Voodoozela” is the debut single from The New York Dutch Masters, who are actually comprised of Subdrive artists Terror Dactel and Cobra Krames.

Filip Filipi feat. Neven Subotic & Tough Life – Kings of Africa

It doesn’t get more official than being the official anthem for the Serbian World Cup team. Using a sample from the opening of Disney’s The Lion King, Canadian artist Filip Filipi’s “Kings of Africa” is a fun, booty-shaking tune that’s perfect for the pitch or on the dancefloor.

Shakira – Waka Waka (David Guetta Remix)

I’m not a huge fan of Shakira’s Waka Waka (when put next to K’naan & David Bisbal’s more stadium-esque anthem “Wavin’ Flag”), however top 40 crossover darling David Guetta did do a proper club (read, big room) remix of her official World Cup anthem. Complete with air-horns, a techie melody, and massive builds, lots of DJs of this style will be playing it out.

K’naan feat David Bisbal – Wavin’ Flag (Latin Celebration Mix)

Not a club track, however this was one of the official FIFA World Cup anthems, and this version for the Latin American market is the literal football stadium anthem. “Wavin’ Flag” was already a strong single from K’naan’s new record Troubadour, however with Coca-Cola’s assistance (that chorus chant? yea that’s the Coca-Cola jingle people), over 15 bilingual versions for different international markets, and the use of over 50 drums for this version, the Celebration mix is the biggest anthem for this year’s World Cup, hands down.

While we were down at this year’s Winter Music Conference in Miami, Dutch label-mate and awesome pool jumper Mike Mago told us about this fantastic group from his homeland of Holland called Nobody Beats the Drum.

He showed us the music videos, where they fight with home-made transformer outfits, the insane stop-motion animated video with the blocks, etc. We were pretty impressed. Fast forward to June and it’s announced they’re performing at New York’s own Brooklyn Bowl, an awesome venue where you can go bowling while DJs and bands perform live in the same room. To truly appreciate NBTD, one must see them live. Check out the little snippet above of their live setup. With visuals, gear on stage (not just a laptop!), they put on a crazy show. So if you’re in NY tonight go see them at the Brooklyn Bowl performing live alongside C-mon & Kypski. You’ll love it and it’s only $5. Esteemed dj and disco selector extraordinaire Free Magic just wrapped up a mix for on-point tastemakers Voules Random. The mix is a sampling of the music you’ll hear at Free Magic and co-resident VDRK’s party DISCOVERY, every month at Santos Party House here in NYC.

With New York City breaking temperature records yesterday, peaking at 103 degrees Fahrenheit (thats 39 degrees Celsius for all you non-Americans), summer is truly, officially, here. Perfect time for outdoor events, cool sea breezes, and fun new music from overseas!

I’d like to introduce you to TUFFEM UP! RECORDS, a label from Australia affiliated with Trashbags, promoters of all things epic and bangin’ down under. They’re preparing to release their collaboration with Marc Homes, aka, DEFEAT, in the form of the label’s newest release BNDTS (out August 2nd, 2010). The sound is a mix of banger electro, Danger-esque epicness, and summer festival energy. The EP features 7 tracks: the title-tune “BNDTS”, “DIY”, “Into the groove” (a personal favorite of ours), “Masque”, and “VLVT”. There are also remixes from South African producer HAEZER and UK discoteca man Farfletched.

DEFEAT – Into the groove

Our boys Will Eastman, the man behind Blisspop, and Jesse, aka Tittsworth, alongside members of Thievery Corporation and other DC djs and nightlife luminaries, have just opened what I consider to be DC’s best and most promising dance venue in Washington DC’s history. It’s name is U Street Music Hall. Epic I know, but read on.

DC has always had a problem with it’s nightclubs. The venues have always been multi-roomed fiascos, snooty door people, absolutely ABSURD dress codes (dress shoes…seriously??), putting a barrier between the DJ and the fans who wanted to DANCE. Basically, they were commercialized top 40 venues selling table service.

U Street Music Hall is none of that. It’s the most minimally decorated nightclub I’ve been to in DC, throwing back to a warehouse vibe. There’s no absurd table BS, just one line to enter, two bars, a stage on one side, and a massive DJ booth facing out onto the massive wood and cork-layered dance floor. The sound system, is without question, the best system in Washington DC. And it’s location, a sprawling basement underneath the bank and 7-Eleven between 11th and 12th on U Street, will be the new homestead in DC to some of the world’s best underground talent and DJs in the next coming weeks, months, and I hope, years.

Two massive New York City parties are bringing their crews down to U Hall, last week was Flashing Lights with Jubilee, Nick Catchdubs, and Ayres, and tonight is Trouble & Bass. With this kind of momentum, one can only imagine what the future will bring.

As I said, tonight is a pretty big one, fans of bass in the nation’s capital will not want to miss the arrival of Brooklyn-based Trouble & Bass’ first DC Monthly. We were so excited about this, we helped out on the DC T&B flag mashup logo

U Hall will be filled with tunes selected by the Trouble & Bass crew: The Captain, Star Eyes, Udachi, UK talent TOMB CREW, and local talent Jackie O. plus others.

Fresh tunes from brand-spanking new label Grand Hotel Records. They shared this great remix of Dirty Super Car’s “Get a Grip” with us and we just had to pass it along.

The Loops of Fury have made this into a groaning creature, ever-building, with a bassline that adds a great rhythm and proper weight to the tune. The samples found in the tune are from Chaka Khan’s “Hold Her Now”, which gives the remix a nice flair in parts. This tune isn’t a straight up monster, it has some diva in it.

Oh and to celebrate this, their debut release, which drops March 22nd everywhere, Grand Hotel is doing a takeover at Matter with some pretty big heavyweights! Here’s the details from the label:

Each release will coincide with major Grand Hotel label events at either matter or Fabric, beginning with the launch of the labels residency at matter on 19th March, before expanding nationwide later on in the year. The launch night will feature an all-star line up including live performances from Vitalic (V Mirror Show Live) and The Japanese Popstars, plus with DJ support from Plump DJs and Ed Banger favourite Feadz. Room 2 will be hosted by Kiss FM’s Joe Ransom alongside very special guests Joe Goddard (Hot Chip), Duke Dumont, Riva Starr and Oliver $.

Dirty Super Car – Get a Grip (The Loops of Fury Remix)

Australian record label Sweat It Out releases some dope tunes, but this one…this is probably my favorite tune they’ve ever put out.

Yolanda Be Cool & DCUP have created a fantastic house/techno funk hybrid track with an old-school sample that just begs you to bop your head in happiness. Seriously, it’s such a funky tune that you can’t help but having fun when you hear it or play it out.

If you’re a fan of Riva Starr’s “I Was Drunk”, you will without a doubt love this tune.

Months in the making, this fantastic tune was crafted by two amazingly talented friends of ours, VDRK and OCD Automatic. Their partnership in the realm of music began when a disco mothership dropped them above Wisconsin. Fast forward to 2010 and here they are with their massive debut, the disco house anthem “Tell My Love.”

Originally to be a Subdrive retail release (and track 14 on our Summer from Below mix), we loved the tune so much we decided to give it away for free! So with that I’m proud and excited to share this with you all, one of my favorite tunes this year, and one I hope will give these guys the attention they deserve.
