Here's what's in store this month:

"Train Train" (live, unreleased)
the subdudes, recorded live at Stephen Talkhouse on Long Island, N.Y., on June 5, 2003. This is a song that, to date, has never been recorded by the band in the studio. This may, in fact, be the only live performance of the song. It was under consideration for the "Miracle Mule" CD.

"Big River" (live, unreleased)
the subdudes and Pat McLaughlin knock out this cool cover of the Johnny Cash classic during a show in Columbia, Mo., on April 20, 1994. McLaughlin, who opened for the subdudes, joins them on stage, playing mandolin and singing lead on one verse.

"Don't Let 'Em" (live, unreleased)
Tiny Town, recorded live in San Francisco on New Year's eve as 1997 turned to 1998. Tiny Town, who were opening for the Radiators, nail this subdudes classic.

"Sarita" (live, unreleased)
The Subdudes, recorded last year (May 19) at Gruene Hall in New Braunfels, Texas.

"Move Too Fast" (studio demo, unreleased)
Steve Strickland and the Big O, recorded at a Kansas studio last year. Strickland, the co-writer of Sarita with Tim Cook, also wrote this one with Cook around 1985.

"Everybody" (live, unreleased)
the subdudes performed this song on their first West Coast tour in 1990. This recording is from Slim's in San Francisco, April 7th. "Everybody" has never been released, though we've featured studio recordings previously on the podcasts.

"When the Show is Through" (rehearsal, unreleased)
Continental Drifters, from a rehearsal in New Orleans around 1986. This song, featuring John Magnie on lead vocals, is otherwise unreleased. The band at the time included Magnie, Tommy Malone on lead guitar and harmony vocals, Johnny Ray Allen on rhythm guitar and harmony vocals, probably Jimmy Messa on bass, possibly Gary Hirstius on rhythm guitar, and probably either Carlo Nuccio or Barry Flippen on drums.

"Cry No More" (live, unreleased)
L'il Queenie and the Percolators, featuring Tommy Malone on lead vocals. We're not sure of the actual title of this song. It was recorded during a show on May 1, 1981, at the Dream Palace in New Orleans, about five months after Tommy Malone joined the band. Leigh Harris and John Magnie help out on vocals. Pardon the mediocre sound quality, it's from a fan recording.

"Bye Bye" (unreleased alternate version)
the subdudes, from an early cassette tape of studio recordings, recorded probably in late 1987 or early 1988. One side of the tape featured the "subdudes mix" of the songs, while the second side featured the "Continental Drifters mix" of the exact same set of songs. This version is from the Drifters side. (As a side note, the version of "Got You on His Mind" from the Musician Magazine "Best of the BUBS (Best Unsigned Bands)" CD may be from this session.) This features the original lineup of the subdudes: Tommy Malone, John Magnie, Steve Amedee and Johnny Ray Allen.

"Freedom for the Stallion" (live, unreleased)
The Trio, featuring guests Tommy Malone and Dave Malone. The Trio, which is a misnomer since this is actually a quartet, is anchored by drummer Johnny Vidacovich and bassist George Porter Jr. This recording of the Allen Toussaint tune (recorded by everyone from Lee Dorsey to the Hues Corporation to Three Dog Night) is from a Dec. 4, 2004, show at the Maple Leaf in New Orleans.

"I Believe to my Soul" (live, unreleased)
The Subdudes and The Radiators recorded this Ray Charles classic at Tipitina's in New Orleans on Oct. 22, 2004. The third set of this live show indeed featured all members of both the subdudes and the Radiators on stage together - listen for all the different guitars (Tommy Malone, Dave Malone and Camille Baudoin) plus both John Magnie and Ed Volker on keyboards (organ as well as electric piano). It was quite the rock 'n' roll orchestra!

"You Got Me Hummin'" (live, unreleased)
The Subdudes, Leigh "L'il Queenie" Harris plus many if not all the members of The Radiators. This is from a much earlier show than the last song -- a tribute on Nov. 25, 1992, also at Tipitina's, to former Rhapsodizers and Cartoons vocalist Becky Kury, who had died about 10 years earlier. During the final set of the show, the subdudes called on stage a number of friends who performed songs associated with Kury. Other guests present during the show who may be performing on this song were Clark Vreeland (guitar), Carlo Nuccio (drums) and Jim Scheurich (drums). This Sam & Dave song features brothers Tommy & Dave Malone plus L'il Queenie on vocals.

"The Happy Song" (live, unreleased)
The Subdudes, recorded way back on Oct. 28, 1989 -- yet another recording from Tipitina's. This cool tune was originally recorded by Otis Redding in 1968. This one had been part of Magnie & Malone's repertoire for years -- they used to do a killer version of it with a horn section in the Percolators in the early '80s.

"If You Want me to Stay" (live, unreleased)
Johnny Vidacovich Trio featuring George Porter Jr. (later known as simply The Trio) and guest Tommy Malone. Another Tipitina's recording, from July 22, 2004. Tommy Malone nails this Sly & the Family Stone song, first recorded in 1973. And check out George Porter's bass solo. Wow!

"Who's Been Talking" (live, unreleased)
Magpie, later known as the 3 Twins, featuring subdudes John Magnie, Steve Amedee and Tim Cook, plus guest Anders Osborne. Recorded at Carrollton Station in New Orleans, Dec. 30, 1999. John Magnie started his career playing in blues bands, and it's not uncommon for him to pull out blues chestnuts. This Chester Burnett, aka Howlin' Wolf, classic was first recorded in 1960.

"Tired of Being Alone" (live, unreleased)
The Subdudes, recorded at the Sports Page in late 1988 in Fort Collins, Colo. This is one of the earliest live recordings of the subdudes, and it features a nice saxophone solo from "Teddy" -- whose last name is lost to the haze for now. Thanks to the fan in the Far East for this recording. This song was originally recorded by Al Green, of course, and was featured on the subdudes' second studio CD, "Lucky."

"Each and Every Day" (live, unreleased)
John Magnie, recorded solo, opening up for the Radiators at the Starlight Theatre in Fort Collins, Feb. 8, 1998. This song was originally released on his 1998 CD titled simply "Magnie."

"The Tattler" (live, unreleased)
Tommy Malone with Peter Holsapple. This is a song generally associated with Ry Cooder, featuring Tommy on vocals, guitar and I think dobro. Peter Holsapple of the DB's joins Tommy on mandolin. This was recorded during a very intimate gig at the Old Point Bar in Algiers Point, in New Orleans, on Oct. 10, 2001.

"Do as I Do" (tentative title, unreleased)
the subdudes, from a rehearsal in John Magnie's basement studio, recorded July 1992. Like the song Going Up the Mountain featured a few months ago from the same session, this is likely the first (and possibly only) rendition of this song (the actual title is unknown), as the band was trying out new material for possible inclusion on the then-upcoming Annunciation CD. Another fly-on-the-wall experience.

"The Rock" (live, unreleased)
Magpie, later known as the 3 Twins, featuring Tim Cook on lead vocals and John Magnie on harmony vocals. This song, which the band had heard performed by Etta James, also features Anders Osborne on lead guitar. Recorded live at Carrollton Station, New Orleans, Dec. 30, 1999.

"South of I-10"
Sonny Landreth, from his CD of the same title. Listen closely and you can hear Tommy Malone on harmony vocals. Be sure to visit Sonny's web site at www.sonnylandreth.com.

"Hell at Home" (live, unreleased)
Sonny Landreth with The Dudes. This is from a show by The Dudes shortly before they resumed calling themselves "the subdudes." They were joined at the end of the show by Sonny Landreth, who performed several songs with them. Recorded live at Tipitina's, New Orleans, Jan. 22, 2003. The studio version of this song can be found on Sonny Landreth's CD, "The Road We're On."

"Carnival Time" (live, unreleased)
the subdudes, featuring Jimmy Messa on lead vocals. This Mardi Gras classic (originally recorded by Al "Carnival Time" Johnson) was performed during a show last year at Southport Hall, just across the Orleans-Jefferson Parish line, in the community of Jefferson. This is the perhaps the first and so far only time that bassman Jimmy Messa has sung lead at a subdudes show! Recorded Feb. 16, 2007.

We're digging way back, focusing on two pre-subdudes bands: the Jazz Poetry Group and the Oolites! Here's what's in store this month:

"Waterfall Me"
Ron Cuccia & The Jazz Poetry Group, from the group's second album, "Music from the Big Tomato," released in 1981 and featuring John Magnie on lead vocals on some songs. This song features music written by Magnie with lyrics by poet Ron Cuccia. Joining Magnie on the recording are members of Astral Project and the Youth Inspirational Choir.

"Waterfall Me" (unreleased)
"Woman" (unreleased)
The Oolites. These were recorded circa 1983-1984 at Tommy Malone's home studio. The Oolites were John Magnie (keyboards and vocals), Tommy Malone (guitar and vocals), Butch McDade (drums) and Ricky Cortes (bass). McDade had been a member of the Amazing Rhythm Aces, while Cortes had played with Magnie and Malone during their Percolators days. Tommy sings lead on "Waterfall Me," while John sings lead on "Woman," a song by Clark Vreeland that Magnie often performed in the early '80s.

"Lose Again"
Clark Vreeland, from his "Sportsman's Paradise" CD released in 2006. Vreeland wrote this song (and one or two others on the CD) with former subdude Johnny Ray Allen, who also plays bass on the recording. Joining them are Carlo Nuccio on drums, David Torkanowsky on keyboards and Theresa Andersson on vocals. Vreeland, a member of the Rhapsodizers back in the mid-70s, produced the subdudes' Primitive Streak CD. Be sure to visit his web site at clarkvreeland.com.

"On the Lam" (unreleased)

The Oolites, demos from circa 1983-1984. See above. Magnie sings lead on "On the Lam," Malone sings "Never See Me Crying," and they both sing "Need Somebody," which they would later revisit on the first subdudes album.

"My Darlin' New Orleans"
Ron Cuccia & The Jazz Poetry Group, featuring Leigh "L'il Queenie" Harris on lead vocals and recorded live at the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans, July 13-14, 1979, and released on the group's first self-titled LP. A few years later, L'il Queenie and the Percolators would re-record the song, which became something of a hit around New Orleans. But this is the original version, which also features John Magnie on keyboards and background vocals, Ron Cuccia on background vocals, Charles Neville on sax, Ramsey McLean on bass and Ricky Sebastian on drums.

John Magnie and the Prodigal Sons, featuring Steve Amedee and Tim Cook. This is an unreleased studio recording by the 3 Twins, performing here under the name they often used when they performed gospel songs. We had a request for some "gospel 'dudes," so here you go.

"Absolutely"
the subdudes, from the new CD, Street Symphony. Another beautiful love song from Tommy and the boys.

"It's Like This" (unreleased, rehearsal and live)
Continental Drifters (excerpt), followed by the subdudes. The Drifters' recording is from a rehearsal circa 1985-1986 and features Johnny Ray Allen on lead vocals. The subdudes' version is from a live recording at Tipitina's in New Orleans in June 1987 and features John Magnie on lead vocals.

"Eleezah"
Mollie O'Brien, from her "Big Red Sun" CD. This recording features John Magnie on accordion, harmonica (!) and Hammond B-3 organ. This Magnie composition is unavailable elsewhere. Be sure to check out Mollie's web site at www.mollieobrien.com.

"Had to Get Away" (live, unreleased)
the subdudes, recorded live at Tipitina's on Oct. 28, 1989. This song was demo'ed for possible inclusion on the first album, but has never been released.

"Fair Weather Friend" (unreleased live version)
"Poverty" (unreleased live version)
the subdudes, with two songs recorded live at The Ark in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Sept. 10, 2007. The studio recording of "Fair Weather Friend" can be found on the new CD, Street Symphony, and "Poverty" can be found on Annunciation. Special thanks to Fred Ellert for the timely live recording.

"Going up on the Mountain" (unreleased rehearsal)
the subdudes, from a band rehearsal held in John Magnie's basement studio, July 1992. This is likely the first (and possibly only) rendition of this song (the actual title is unknown), as the band was trying out new material for possible inclusion on the then-upcoming Annunciation CD. The lyrics are still in flux, and the band is feeling its way around the song. The song was apparently abandoned - another example of how the subdudes would try out then put aside songs that other musicians would give their left legs for. Consider this a fly-on-the-wall experience.

John Magnie and friends, from the cassette-only Kiva Records release "The Parlor Sessions," recorded in Fort Collins, Colo., in early 1994. The subdudes' version of this song was released on the Primitive Streak CD, but only in Europe and Japan.

"Agent Double-O Soul" (live)
The Works, recorded live at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, April 29, 1983. The Works was a pre-subdudes band formed by John Magnie and Tommy Malone. Also features Roger Martin (drums) and Marc Hoffman (bass).

"New Wine"

* This song, "Hold It," fell at the end of a cassette tape -- the first part of the song on one side and the second part on the other side of the tape. It has been spliced together but is missing the guitar solo and the final verse.
