"Do you have a library card?" opens most of Marvey Harris' conversations with the people she meets. Marvey, a librarian, and her cat, Phoenix, have recently moved from Brooklyn, NY to the small town of Peach Coast, Georgia.

Ms. Olivia Matthews brings forward a refreshing take on the cozy genre. She combines all the good parts of a cozy; mystery, amateur sleuth, friends, a cat, and a budding romance all the while wrapping this small town of Peach Coast around me like a blanket. Her characters are brought to life through well-developed characters who are smart, sassy, cerebral, and realistic.

Janina Edwards' (narrator) did a fantastic job bringing voices to each character through her narrating. I enjoyed her Southern accent and treatment of colloquialisms. Each character had their unique qualities that didn't leave any doubt who was talking. Ms. Edwards beautifully brought the words of Ms. Matthews writing 3-dimensional in audio format. It reminded me of the radio shows years ago.

Some of my best times have been spent at the library. Through books, I have been able to; travel anywhere - even across time, solve mysteries, and expand my mind through learning. All that, while in the library! It's hard to top a day or evening spent with a good book in hand or listening to an audiobook with my kitties.

I will definitely read more by this author and look forward to catching up with Marvey and her friends as this series progresses.

September - A Beginning or an Ending

Have you ever looked at September as an ending? After all, school starts in many locations in the northern hemisphere, the fall solstice begins on September 21st. This is right around the time we say goodbye to summer and start seeing changes in the weather or the turning of the leaves. I think of September as sort of a beginning and ending in the same breath. Yes, those things I've mentioned do happen but it's also a time for gathering. We harvest our gardens and prepare them for the next year. That's my ending. The beginning is my birthday, which I celebrate the entire month. This is also when I evaluate or reflect on the year and set my intensions for the next year instead of using January 1st. It seems that I remain faithful to my goals. My new year's resolutions used to be quite lofty - workout every day, get organized, stop eating junk food, etc. By January 2nd I felt like a failure.

September is also the time I feel closest to my family. This is also when my excitement begins for the holiday festivities.

Besides all the walks through leaf-fallen paths, reflection, pumpkins showing up, re-connecting with oneself, the solstice is another reason to hold hands, sit around a fire pit and enjoy the wonders of this time of year.

Do you remember having to do homework before going outside to visit friends, pop quizzes, and school lunches? School may have been the best of times ("the good ol' days"), or a time that is best left behind. For me, it's a little of both. So let's have some fun, without having to walk the halls, and get us into the spirit of the month with these fun questions and scrambles:

Did you know that hairspray does more than keep your hair in place?

You can keep the exterior of pumpkins shiny by spraying them with hairspray.
Spraying your holiday wreath will keep it looking fresh longer.
One more thing hairspray can do is remove hair dye from a shirt or towel. Spray the fresh stain really well, allow to sit, then launder. Please test this in an inconspicuous area. I have not actually tried this one.

Spells and Spiced Latte: A Coffee Witch Cozy Mystery (Maddie Goodwell Book 1)

Book 1 of this series had me at coffee. So glad I took advantage of downloading this free (as of May 28, 2021) book from Amazon. The title and adorable cat on the cover were sure to entertain me - and it did. Yes, I am one of those people that chooses their books by the cover.

This is a good, clean storyline that includes: Maddie Goodwell, a witch; Trixie, her Persian cat and "familiar"; Maddie's best friend and business partner, Suzanne Taylor; and coffee.

Maddie was seven years old when she found an ancient book titled "Wytchdraft for the Chosen" and learned one spell. To this day, she is only able to do one spell - the coffee vision spell. When Maddie reads Joan's (one of her regular customers) coffee grounds, she sees Joan lying dead in the kitchen. Within 24 hours the vision comes true compelling Maddie to solve the murder with the help of her best friend, Suzanne and Trixie, her faithful cat.

Who wanted Joan dead and is Maddie next on the murder list?

This cozy has suspense, intrigue, mystery, and magic with some red herrings. One of those red herrings is Ramon.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Cozies, in general, are a favorite go-to when wanting to lose myself in something light and fun to read. Highly recommend this fun book to anyone including young adults. Thank you Jinty James for not keeping this story to yourself!

Unfaithful - Audio Book Review

STOP what you’re doing!

This is a page turner. In my case, every excuse was made to listen and I finished in less than three days.

Ms. Natalie Barelli’s story was brought to life by the narrator, Emily Rankin. This is one of those books where the author, storyline, and narrator were in sync to maximize the listening experience.

Without giving away the details: Anna Sanchez, our lead character, has the perfect career, perfect marriage, and two perfect children. Then one of her students dies and her life begins to spiral. All the while Anna tries to control the situation.

Ms. Barelli doesn’t give anything away. Lots of red herrings. Ms. Rankin brings us into the story allowing us to feel every emotion, hear the stress, and the see each scene. Every character had a distinct voice and manner of speaking.

This is more than 5 stars. I will read (listen) more of Natalie Barelli’s books. In fact, I’m already listening to “The Accident.”

Does it sound like I enjoyed this book? Yep.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?

Exactly like the front picture.

Were the instructions easy to follow?

Yes, from the print instructions all the way through. The sewing instructions were easy to follow especially for an intermediate/advanced sewer. I call myself an “adventurous beginner with tendencies towards intermediate”, so a little more thought had to go into each step. Thankfully, there were pictures with the instructions. (Tuesday Stitches has a sew-along for additional pictures).

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?

Particularly like the wide range of sizes and the attractive overall body coverage. The peek-a-boo top adds playfulness with a flair of sophistication.

The instructions include sizes, fabric & lining along with the elastic requirements. There is also a fabric stretch visual. At some points the exact length of elastic to cut is provided.

The pattern options flowchart as well as the sizing and fit visual explanations helped with knowing how the suit was to fit properly.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:

No alterations or design changes.

Chose view A (one-piece)

My measurements in inches
Size 0 = 33 high hip, 28 crotch length
Size 2 = 33 high bust
Size 6 = 28 Waist

Made a straight size 0 with an AA cup.

Sewed in cup inserts.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?

Yes!

I really enjoyed the journey from start to finish even though this swimsuit took a bit longer to make than anticipated. So glad to have made this because it stretched my abilities and further built my confidence.

This was made using the sewing machine and ball-point needles. Settings used were the lightning stitch for overall construction, zigzag for the elastic, and finished with a twin needle (personal preference).

Stay calm and become one with the seam ripper. My education is furthered with every stitch undone.

Recommendations for others is to go slow, make a couple t-shirts to practice working with knits or other stretchy fabrics.

Conclusion:

Go for it! You can do this!

This was my first attempt sewing swimwear and love the result. The Nautilus Swimsuit (View A) is stylish and comfortable with full coverage.

Each view enhances the figure and helps those of us with smaller cup sizes appear fuller due to the detail in the center.

Boning will be added on the next make.

I made this swimsuit for my upcoming vacation (YAY!!!) and adding this to my summer capsule wardrobe. YAY!

I stitched the neckband seam in the center of the back rather than matching it with a shoulder seam. This helped me in two ways: 1. less bulk at the shoulder seam; 2 helps me know the back from the front.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Yes and Yes. I will certainly sew it again and recommend to others.

Conclusion:
Items I used to make the Ultraviolet Tee:

Ballpoint needles
Serger
Sewing machine for hems
Scissors
Seam ripper

Wonderfully comfortable and perfect for warm weather. This can also add warmth by layering over a long-sleeve shirt during the cooler evenings or winter months.

This Ultraviolet tee can be a nice evening top using lace with a lining.

A new TNT (tried and true) pattern for me.

In addition to the instructions provided, I used a video by Threads Magazine for the neckband and Tuesday Stitches Sewalong.

Note: Pre-wash fabric, iron, go slow, and press each seam. Use a light touch for knit and woven fabrics.

Pattern Description:

This is described as a purse. For me, it’s more of a classy tote bag.

Featuring:

A zip top closure keeps the bag's contents secure.
An exterior zippered pocket. Inside this pocket is a smaller one.
Fully lined. The simpler version can be unlined or flat lined (the front, interfacing, and lining are all stitched as one – kind of like a quilt sandwich). Flatlining will give the look of a lined bag but easier to sew, although the raw edges will be visible like the unlined version.
Front of the bag has an inset panel.

Finished Measurements:
18” (46cm) wide x 18” (46cm) tall x 6” (15cm) tall

Were the Instructions Easy to Follow?

I consider myself an intermediate, adventurous beginner. The directions and pictures made the construction of this purse enjoyable. I also watched the videos on Tuesday Stitches.

What did you Particularly Like or Dislike about the Pattern?

After printing, the PDF pages matched making a nice floral design aligning the pattern pieces to fit perfectly.
Notches matched allowing the fabric pieces to come together nicely.
Meditative after completing a rather tasking project. It restored my confidence, and I had a nice purse in practically no time.

Fabric Used:

Cotton fabric (from stash) for the outer and lining fabrics. Machine prewash and dry without fabric softener, and iron.
Stitch’nSew non-woven firm interfacing. Machine prewash and dry without fabric softener, and iron. This was used on the sides and bottoms for some more stability.
Pellon 805R - Wonder Under (paper backed fusible web) for pockets.
Cotton blend batting.

Pattern Alterations or Design Changes You Made:

I made several changes. Some due to my not following directions (daydreaming) and others because of personal preference.

I made the sewn-on handle double lined with the stiff interfacing (listed above).The outside became the lining fabric.

I wasn’t happy with my using batting for the inserts but not the entire front.
Inside small pocket sewn with the dividers and stitch vertically to better fit my cell phone.
Made the larger zipper pocket into a pouch.
Added additional fabric to the sides of the zipper. This gave me more width at the top allowing the zipper to be out of sight.
Quilted the outside fabric which became the lining.
Printed an additional front/back pattern to cut out the insert placements on the front. This isn’t really necessary; however, this will make it quicker for future makes.

Would You Sew It Again?

YES! Again, and again.

- Denim, faux leather, faux fur, oil cloth, canvas, piping, canvas, oil cloth, more pockets, the choices are endless.

Would You Recommend to Others?

Absolutely! It’s a great size, stands up nicely, looks great, and holds just about anything.

If you’re new to sewing; remember to read all the way through the directions prior to starting, use a light touch when handling the fabric so it doesn’t stretch much, go slow, lots of pins, press (not iron) seams each step of the way. If you’re adventurous, try the zipper pocket and perhaps use a decorative button closure for the top.

Conclusion:

This is a great pattern! And a good way to use up scrap fabric. I use this bag as a carry-on when traveling, overnight stays, trekking my workout gear (including my yoga mat), trips to the pool, and so many other ways. Already thinking about ways to make one for each activity.

I will certainly make these as gifts. Some with embroidery, fashion fabric, and even some applique. Who knows! One thing is known, each bag will be unique and bespoke.

This will also make for a nice diaper bag (add a couple more pockets or inserts).

Of course, there are other hobo purse or tote bag patterns, but why add them to your stash when (1) this one is created by an indie pattern designer, and (2) so many variations that allows your creativity to shine.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?

Absolutely! This is a perfect pattern to add personalization. Each make will be unique.

Magnetic (false) Eyelashes - Review

You read that right! Magnetic Eyelashes

If you're a bride, part of the wedding party, or someone who becomes teary at weddings, then I think you're going to like wearing magnetic eyelashes. They stay on, smudge free, and most of all there will be no mascara streaks down your cheeks.

Cosyway Magnetic Eyelashes and Eye Liner have officially replaced mascara in my daily morning routine. No more messy glue, or inadvertent removal of my own eye lashes with other false eyelashes.

Reasons I'm so happy to have found these:

Super light - don't even know they're there

Blends naturally with my eyelashes

Shake the eyeliner tube, apply two layers of eyeliner, once it's dry use the tweezers provided or apply by hand. They're smudge proof and last all day; through working out, sweating, and even a shower. I haven't worn these swimming.

To remove the lashes, gently pull from outside in towards the inner eye. Apply an oil based makeup remover for the liner. The magnetic part of the lashes can be wiped with the same oil free makeup remover using a cotton swab. Properly cared for, lashes will last up to 20 uses.

Another reason to purchase these for momentous occasions is that they come in multiple pairs and sizes.

Valentine's Day When You're Single

If you find yourself single for whatever reason on this Valentine's Day, send out thoughts of love and let the self-pampering begin. Treat yourself special. After all, aren't you the best person to be around?

Whether February the 14th falls on a work day or not, enjoy some quality time throughout this month. Here are some ways to luxuriate in your independence:

Have fun!
Make a Cuddle Basket the day before to enjoy during tonight's movie marathon or some good ol' binge watching of your favorite series. Include items like a new throw blanket, hot chocolate (here or here), gourmet popcorn, and some semi-homemade cookies.
Swaddle in your blanket and journal or read.
Linger in your lounging wear.
Dress up and go to a museum.
Treat yourself to something at a spa.
Try going tech-free; set your phone for emergency or to receive calls only from your favorites list.
Go sightseeing in your own city or visit somewhere that's within a day's drive.

Cook yourself a favorite dinner or try out a new recipe. If the recipe seems like it makes too much then simply scale back on the ingredients. If baking, check on the doneness as the time gets close - the smaller the item may take less time.

Zesty Paws Cat Calming Bites - Review

Thank you goes out to Zesty Paws for allowing me to try this product free for an honest review.

A little background. Ordered this product early December 2020. It hadn’t arrived two weeks later, so I checked the order status and there was some kind of mix-up with the shipping. Contacted Zesty Paws, sent an email explaining the situation through their “contact us”.

GUESS WHAT – the response came from a real person! Not instantaneous, but close enough. They maintained communication with a follow up on the day the Calming Bites arrived.

Now for the review. I have four cats and getting worried about two of them. One is a lady of a certain age; the other is a picky eater. Since trying these, the older cat seems to keep her food down. My picky eater is now being as picky and can eat with the other cats. I’m not really sure if these side effects are expected, but Zesty Paws Cat Calming Bites seem to be working. The other two cats don’t have any issues but are enjoying their “treats”. Thank you, Zesty Paws!

Salt Dough Ornaments

Do you remember playing with homemade dough when you were little? Oh my gosh, my middle sister and I would sit at the kitchen table for hours playing with our dough. Mom would put a few drops of food coloring so we would have colored dough - like the kind that was available in the stores. We would use cookie cutters, make our own shapes, blend the colors together to make another color. We sometimes even saved our creations.

Searching (falling down the rabbit hole) Pinterest one day, I came across this recipe

By Oleander and Palm. Aren't her ornaments gorgeous in their simplicity?She puts her designs in the oven to dry. I read in another blog that you can also air dry them. So I did; and I used this recipe that uses cinnamon! Oh, they smell heavenly!

I used cookie cutters on hand. Here's the kicker.... patience was my friend. It took about a week for the dough to thoroughly dry. I started them out overnight in the oven with a damp paper towel. I did this so they wouldn't crack. However, we needed the oven - go figure. The tray and all sat on the counter to dry. I flipped the ornaments daily.

These will be gift tags. Some of the ornaments will be simple, like the grapes.

A toothpick was used to make the holes while the dough was still wet. Wish I'd used a straw. Next time.

The natural color of the ornaments is so pretty. I'm amazed at how light they turned out air drying. The paint used is acrylic and marker. All the ornaments are sealed with Mod Podge.

I'm teaching myself to paint and allowing myself to bring out the inner child and PLAY! These aren't perfect, but they are from my heart. 😊

Fan Stitch - Crochet Runner

I have begun challenging myself to make things that I see on the internet. This project is a crochet baby blanket video by Jayda in Stitches. I'm a beginner at crochet and have been following Jayda for awhile. Her videos are so clear and easy to follow that I thought I'd give this a try.

My "baby blanket" is more of a table cover - think a great big placemat. The reason for this is because my yarn and needle was different from hers.

Unfortunately, I threw away the yarn label. I do remember that it was baby weight and it had a picture of a baby in a sweater. The color is an off-white, maybe ecru.

Instant Peppermint Hot Chocolate - Product Review

There are times that we just don't feel like messing with the stove to make homemade hot cocoa but still want something hot and tasty. Today's hot chocolate solves that problem and more.

Pour milk (dairy or any non-dairy) into a microwavable cup, heat for about 1 1/2 minutes on high, open your favorite hot chocolate package, pour in cup, stir, and now add a 1/2 to 1 full shot of your favorite peppermint liqueur.

You're done and the sensational sipping begins within two minutes!

When you're hosting a gathering on a cold evening, try setting up a hot chocolate bar with instant as well as homemade. Have hot milk, hot water, sprinkles, marshmallows, whipped cream, and of course alcoholic and non-alcoholic flavorings to add.

Notes:

We used non-dairy milk and of our favorites are almond milk or coconut milk. Soy and rice would also be nice.
We like dark chocolate and have found Swiss Miss Dark Chocolate to have a rich flavor.
There are other varieties of peppermint liqueur out there but we like Arrow for the price range and have found the intensity of the flavor to be right on target with higher priced schnapps.
This recipe is just as nice with non-alcoholic Simply Organic Peppermint Flavor or Torani Peppermint (or try one of each in this Variety Pack) Syrup added.
I would really like to say that this is vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free, wheat-free, and sugar-free but I cannot with full confidence. However, you might like to try Café Escapes Hot Cocoa, Dark Chocolate, K-Cup Portion Pack for Keurig Brewers (gluten-free), Ghirardelli Hot Chocolate Mix, Chocolate Mocha (vegan), and Swiss Miss Hot Cocoa Mix, Milk Chocolate (sugar-free).

Please be responsible when drinking alcohol and not drive. Keep your friends and family safe by not allowing them to drive after drinking. It goes (at least it should) without saying that if you aren't of the legal drinking age in your area to please refrain from alcohol and enjoy the non-alcoholic version which happens to be quite good.

Apothecary TeaTree Oil - Product Review

I remember years ago, and I'm talking almost 20 years now, a co-worker friend of mine introduced me to Tea Tree Oil. It's been so long that I don't remember which brand she used, and suppose that doesn't really matter. What does matter is that she had been using it for a long time. She used it to treat all kinds of skin problems including acne. She also used it as a cleanser around her house.

To my uneducated thought process, I couldn't fathom using an oil to clean anything in my house except maybe to condition my wood.

Fast forward to 2014 and here I am ordering Tea Tree Oil from Amazon and loving it. Besides the pureness of this product, it was really quite gentle on my skin. It is recommended that another oil, such as coconut oil, be used if trying on your skin for the first time.

Upon ordering my Apothecary Tea Tree Oil, they also sent me a recipe / use type booklet via email in PDF format.

Besides fighting acne, this non-diluted/pure Tea Tree Oil also naturally fights "Toenail Fungus, Lice, Yeast Infections, Skin Tags, Cold Sores, Dandruff, Ringworm, Fleas, Warts, Psoriasis, and More.  "

Think of all the money you'll save with one 4 ounce bottle that lasts a little over a year with regular use. Did you know that you can also make your own shampoo, lotion, deodorant, toothpaste, body wash, face cleanser, and more? Substance of Living Hair Thickening and Conditioning Shampoo

I combined a couple recipes together and came up with my own Hair Thickening and Conditioning Shampoo.

Thickening and Conditioning Shampoo

Recipe:

5 Drops Tea Tree Oil
1 Tablespoon Honey
2 Tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar
2 Tablespoons liquid Castile Soap
1/2 Cup Distilled Water
Plastic Jar

Directions

Combine all the ingredients and shake well. It will be fairly liquidy so when you use it, try about two single-hand amounts. What I mean is cup one hand, palm up, and pour as much shampoo as will fit in your palm without spilling over. You can make your shampoo a little thicker by reducing the amount of water you add to the mixture.

Another way to use this shampoo that might actually work a little easier is to use a spray bottle.

I have naturally fine hair but a lot of it but after the first application, my hair felt and looked so much thicker. I've used this shampoo for three days in a row. I'm not used to having such thick hair that used my store-bought shampoo for a few days. I'd like to get where I can use this new shampoo and try some more recipes in the book and completely get away from store-bought shampoos and conditioners.

I also made my own version of a shower cleaner.

Shower Cleaner

Recipe:

1/8 cup White Vinegar
1 1/2 teaspoons Tea Tree Oil
1/2 cup Baking Soda
1/2 cup Water
1/4 cup Liquid Castile Soap

Directions

Add the white vinegar, water, liquid Castile soap and tea tree oil. Then EVER-SO-SLOOOOWLY add the baking soda. The combination of the baking soda and vinegar will be extremely bubbly. I tried using a spray bottle for this but it didn't work very well, so next time I will try a squirt bottle. Something like a honey or squeeze mustard type bottle. You know me, I'm into reusing and recycling whenever possible.

Castello Burger Blue Cheese - Product Review

This is a super exciting day for me. Not only do I get to share with you the newest addition to Castello family - Burger Blue Cheese, but we are celebrating my fabulous husband's birthday and 4th of July! (Although you've seen bits and pieces of him from time to time, he really does not like being in the limelight and yet he did an amazing job as Nathan Detroit in "Guys and Dolls" musical.

I can go on and on and on about how adorable and wonderful my husband is, but you really want to know about this new cheese that people are talking about.

Although Castello designed their sliced Burger Blue cheese to accompany a burger, we chose to top our grilled Mahi.

First, we soaked two cedar planks in a mixture of water and Merlot wine. As you can see, we had to weigh the boards down with a couple glasses.

The steam from the soaked planks flavored the fish and kept it moist without having to cover them. The oven was set at 400 F, and each side baked for 9 minutes.

Aww, look at all that marbling in the cheese slices. The cheese came nicely packaged and was fairly thinly sliced with a rich and creamy texture.

Our cheese was fresh from the refrigerator so it was a bit crumbly, but with delicate handling, we were able to break the cheese slice in half and place on each piece of fish.

The cheese melted beautifully and each bite had the rich flavors enhancing the Mahi. I don't know if other fish would pair as nicely but Tuna steaks or maybe Shark might be nice. Salmon might be a little too delicate for the boldness of the cheese - unless the cheese was thinned out a little more and made into a sauce.

After we were chosen to be a part of the Castello Burger Blue campaign, we had some difficulty finding the slices in our area. So, you can imagine our excitement when we finally found it at our local Harris Teeter Grocery Store and it came at a perfect time. The cheese can be found in the specialty cheese section.

What we loved about Castello Burger Blue:

Conveniently sliced
No artificial ingredients
Bold flavor
Melts beautifully
Great presentation (both packaged and served on food)

Whole Latte Love (Contemporary Romance EBook) Review

You might remember the name Rachelle Ayala from a previous book review Taming Romeo where we met the Sanchez family and heart throb Romeo Garcia. This time we meet Carina Chen, fresh out of an ivy league school and interning through the summer for an investment bank in Berkley, California. At the same time we are introduced to Carina, we have the pleasure of meeting the free-spirit Dylan Jewell who is the oh-so-yummy barista. Did I mention that Dylan is also the lead singer and guitar player in a band?

Don't worry, I won't spoil the story for you, but want to tease you a little so you rush over to Amazon and purchase yourself a copy of Whole Latte Love (New Adult Romance).

Ms. Ayala has a way with words that truly pulls the reader into the story. At first, I liked Carina Chen but as the story progressed, I found myself wishing she would grow up. Guess I was frustrated with Carina because I didn't want to see her lose out on happiness. See, Carina is all business. When she moves in with Dylan (oops, there I go giving some of the story away) for the summer she comes up with a list of rules for their living arrangement. Like I said, Carina is all business and doesn't need any distractions while she's competing for her career making position in banking.

Dylan, on the other hand, will melt your heart with his sultry voice, heart-laden lattes, warmth and caring, and let's not forget his smoking chiseled looks. Can you imagine coffee in bed delivered by this guy?! Hold on, there's a lot more to Dylan than meets the eye. I'm not going to ruin it for you but he's got some major brains that make him a true catch. He's also "damaged goods".

Okay, let's get to the meat of the story (I mean, a good story line and come-to-life characters is nice but we ~~want good~~ -make that- demand fricking fantastic love scenes). The sex scenes do not disappoint. They are explicit and continue in Ms. Ayala's tradition of satisfying our daydreams.

Carina and Dylan, despite all their smarts, other people and obstacles, find happiness through inner strength. This book is certainly about opposites attracting and learning to open our hearts and minds to how others live. There's a Whole Latte Love with frothy hearts and steamy scenes to make your summer reading a little bit hotter!

In my own words, though, the mud has a pleasant scent, is non drying or cracking, and left my face feeling soft and moist. Moist, not greasy. One might say, "She has a dewy complexion." Seriously though, the mud was easy to apply, left my skin feeling soft and not dried out. I felt so pampered.

The first time I tried the mud, it was very clinical. I had the lights on bright, noted how the mud felt as it was on my face, wondering if my face would be red afterwards, and questioned how easy it was to remove. Jane Green's "Tempting Fate" Tea Party

If you've been tasked with hosting a party, consider an afternoon tea for your next birthday party, bridal shower, baby shower, Mother’s Day, or a girls get-together. An afternoon tea consists of tea and a light meal between the hours of 3 and 5pm and is perfect for a group of 6 to 10 ladies.

Did you know there is a difference between an afternoon tea and a high tea? An afternoon tea offers tea and light food to stave off hunger between lunch and dinner. A high tea is usually served around dinner time and is considered a working person's meal with meat or a heavier main dish.

In the United States we often think of an afternoon tea as a pretty big deal. In fact, if we were to go to a tea house or out for an afternoon tea, we would usually be looking at around $30 or more. You don't need to spend that kind of money if you host your own. Bring out your china or use a mix and match setting of china to add to the charm. If you don't have a china set, ask each lady if they would please provide their own tea cup and saucer.

For your menu, serve sandwiches sliced as little soldiers or in triangular shapes with the crust removed, quick breads or muffins, pastries, and a selection of teas is all you need for the perfect tea party.

Notes:

Tea is served with milk and never cream. If a guest takes milk in her tea be sure to not offer her lemon - that is, unless she likes a curdled tea.
The preserves, clotted cream, and lemon curd is served with the scones or quick breads.
I used two tea pots of hot water and offered a variety of herbal teas in bags.
You can purchase everything for a tea but with a little preparation it's quite easy to make.
A simple presentation is all that is needed because the food and china will take center stage.
If you're going to make your food, prepare the sandwich fillings the day before and assemble just before the party. The lemon curd, clotted cream and sugar cubes can also be made the day before.
Creating a menu that will work with various diets is quite easy with a tea party. This party offered eggless, vegan, dairy-free, and gluten-free foods.

A Heartfelt Poem about a Parent's Love

I believe in angels and that once a parent, always a parent.

A drunk man in an Oldsmobile

They said had run the light

That caused the six-car pileup.

When broken bodies lay about

And blood was everywhere,

The sirens screamed out eulogies,

For death was in the air.

A mother, trapped inside her car,

Was heard above the noise;

Her plaintive plea near split the air:

Oh, God, please spare my boys!

She fought to loose her pinned hands;

She struggled to get free,

But mangled metal held her fast

In grim captivity.

Her frightened eyes then focused

On where the back seat once had been,

But all she saw was broken glass and

Two children's seats crushed in.

Her twins were nowhere to be seen;

She did not hear them cry,

And then she prayed they'd been thrown free,

Oh, God, don't let them die!

Then firemen came and cut her loose,

But when they searched the back,

They found therein no little boys,

But the seat belts were intact.

They thought the woman had gone mad

And was traveling alone,

But when they turned to question her,

They discovered she was gone.

Policemen saw her running wild

And screaming above the noise

In beseeching supplication,

Please help me find my boys!

They're four years old and wear blue shirts;

Their jeans are blue to match.

One cop spoke up, They're in my car,

And they don't have a scratch.

They said their daddy put them there

And gave them each a cone,

Then told them both to wait for Mom

To come and take them home.

I've searched the area high and low,

But I can't find their dad.

He must have fled the scene,

I guess, and that is very bad.

The mother hugged the twins and said,

While wiping at a tear,

He could not flee the scene, you see,

For he's been dead a year.

The cop just looked confused and asked,

Now, how can that be true?

The boys said, Mommy, Daddy came

And left a kiss for you.

He told us not to worry

And that you would be all right,

And then he put us in this car with

The pretty, flashing light.

We wanted him to stay with us,

Because we miss him so,

But Mommy, he just hugged us tight

And said he had to go.

He said someday we'd understand

And told us not to fuss,

And he said to tell you, Mommy,

He's watching over us.

The mother knew without a doubt

That what they spoke was true,

For she recalled their dad's last words,

I will watch over you.

The fireman's notes could not explain

The twisted, mangled car,

And how the three of them escaped

Without a single scar.

But on the cop's report was scribe,

In print so very fine,

An angel walked the beat tonight on Highway 109.

This morning when the Lord opened a window to Heaven, He saw me, and He asked: 'My child, what is your greatest wish for today?'

I responded: 'Lord please, take care of the person who is reading this message, their family and their special friends. They deserve it and I love them very much.'

Book Club Reading Selection for May 2014

May seems to be one of those in-between months. It doesn't really have the freshness of spring and it isn't the month of brides but it is a magical month nonetheless. Looking at the book selections for this month's reading, and I noticed they all have a couple things in common. Each book has strong female characters, talks of food, and has a death. Can you find other similarities?
To begin our reading it only seems fair that a cat or in this case cats lead the way. Tatania and Zeus, the magical cats, allow humans Grace and Jack to join them in solving mysteries throughout the 1920s.
