Man rows with all his might, but the sea beneath the boat is no longer water — it’s a tangle of measuring tapes, each with different numbers, with no logic between them.

Maybe this is what our lives look like today: we give our all, we shrug, we grit our teeth — but we float above a chaos of numbers that should weigh our value, our time, our success. Kilograms, age, salary, appreciation, performance. The wrinkles of the same tape, only with different numbers on it.

And yet, he didn’t stop rowing.

Maybe this is the only philosophy that matters: you can’t stop the sea of numbers around you, but you can choose to row anyway — not to beat the numbers, but because the movement itself, the effort itself, is what keeps you human.

This fascinating work by Berlin artist Vito Gaarin is an extremely powerful visual metaphor for the modern human condition. A brutally honest sculpture that forces us to look in the mirror and ask ourselves uncomfortable questions.

Artistic perspective: Contrast of forms

Visually, the piece is based on a brilliant contrast. On the one hand, we have the classical, masculine and athletic silhouette of the rower cast in bronze, an image that suggests strength, direction and raw determination. On the other hand, the environment in which he moves is not fluid water, but a chaotic yellow sea made of tailor’s tape (carpentry/tailoring tape). Gaarin manages to transform a banal object to be measured into a symbol of limitation and blockage.

Philosophical reflection: The illusion of control

Philosophically, the sculpture captures the „illusion of control”. We imagine that if we can measure the world, we can master it and navigate it. In reality, the more we try to fit existence into fixed patterns, rigid standards and centimeters, the more we block our own fluidity. Oars cannot catch the shine of water; they only hit cold numbers. It is a modern reinvention of the myth of Sisyphus: a huge effort carried out in a completely sterile environment.

A remarkable work that reminds us that life is meant to be lived and felt, not just measured and compared.

Viewed through the lens of psychoanalysis, the sculpture shows us how our defense mechanisms can turn our lives into a mental trap.

The Conflict between the Superego and the Se (Impulse)

The rower represents the Ego (I) caught in the middle. His athletic, tense body suggests a strong vital drive, the raw desire to advance and explore (specific to the Unconscious/Self). However, he is not sailing on smooth water, but is stuck in an ocean of measuring tapes. These tapes represent the rigid Super-Ego: social norms, imposed standards, perpetual judgment, and the obsessive need to measure our worth according to external expectations.

Measurement as a defense and repression mechanism

In psychoanalysis, the obsession with numbers, figures, and metrics is often a mechanism of affective isolation and intellectualization. When inner or outer reality becomes too anxious or difficult to control, the psyche tends to “quantify” it in order to reduce anxiety. The yellow tailor’s tapes are the rational mind’s desperate attempt to measure and introduce logic where there should be only flow and emotion. The result? A modern neurosis in which the instrument of control becomes the prison cell.

The illusion of movement and self-sabotage (Anchoring in the Symbolic)

Although the man makes a titanic effort, he is rowing in vain. Psychoanalytically, we witness a compulsive repetition: the character consumes immense psychic energy (libido) performing a useless action, because he is completely disconnected from his fluid Unconscious (water). He has replaced the direct experience of life with a symbolic substitute – a sea of rigid numbers that block his real progress. It is the perfect image of functional depression or contemporary burnout, where action masks inner stagnation.

A psychological masterpiece that challenges us to descend below the surface of our own minds. Are we truly moving forward or are we just wasting our energy within the safe but suffocating limits of our own obsessions?

Filosofic, sculptura surprinde „iluzia controlului”.

Moldavian Chronicles, (Almost) Weird

by Adi G. Secară

A Titan of Primordial Colour, an Australian in Galați

We should all know who the Titans were—or were not! To any rational person, they did not exist in reality; but in that “most interesting reality, if not the most beautiful one” (an allusion to Elena Grigoriu’s philosophical book The Most Beautiful Reality), they are an unattainable symbol!

Of course, Neluș Oană never set out to storm Heaven and dethrone Zeus! Perhaps only the Heaven of his inner art, which cries out, with the justification of Arghezi’s psalmist, to be made manifest in the fragile realm of outward form!

In his seventh solo exhibition in Galați, the visual artist born in Pechea but now a citizen of the world finds the right Measure of tone and tames the Matter of colour—with relish, but without greed. He is also Van Gogh, honoured in Flower Torn from the Sun, a Van Gogh of Red; he could even be a Houellebecqian character—an allusion to the visual artist in The Map and the Territory, Jed Martin, who bluntly and austerely emphasises the erotic power of flowers. After all, in the visual arts, Nature can be many things: a pretext, a setting, an extension of the human soul, a muse or source of inspiration, a mirror of the human spirit, a model, a symbol, and so on, depending on the historical age…

Schopenhauerian or not, Nature is not necessarily seen as a romantic or idyllic place. In fact, that hardly matters: form and suggestion are more important, the artist says in conversations at exhibition openings, if I remember correctly. So is work—unceasing work. Both Nature and Herculean labour can sometimes be almost raw manifestations of the “will to live” and of the pure instinct of reproduction, reproduction itself becoming, if we may stretch the point, a desire of the work of art.

It is as though some of Oană’s works want to have their own abstract, hermetic love story, to have their own children—indeed, their own children—flowers giving rise to other flowers… A will to colour, a will to paint!

In a brief conversation with another Titan of the history of the visual arts, Corneliu Stoica, in 2003, he said that he did not paint but rather… struck. We, having witnessed only his last two or three exhibitions, may now say that, at the age of full artistic maturity, Neluș Oană… is blossoming—and not in any ordinary way.

Even the landscapes on display seem, whether or not they actually contain flowers, to be… in bloom: the haystacks of Transylvania look like flowers, the waves of Sydney look like flowers; had he dared to paint a self-portrait, we would probably have seen flowers there too; his memories of Pechea are flowers as well…

His Paradise seems to be a Paradise of flowers, which may also be books, in the manner of Borges or Umberto Eco. Perhaps this is one of the revelations of Neluș Oană’s work: in Paradise, books are flowers; they have their shape, or some floral shape that we could not imagine, only intuit!

Cinematically, this might bring to mind What Dreams May Come, starring Robin Williams and based on Richard Matheson’s novel, where Paradise takes the form of three-dimensional paintings, in which colour is so important—even to a certain kind of salvation!

Actually, I am mistaken: there are self-portraits as well, such as the painting entitled In Love! Or the one called Happiness!

Yes, Neluș Oană has overcome the limitations about which Noica wrote, with the Romanian particularity of Lower Moldavia seducing the universal. His armies of flowers are ready to conquer what is, most often, unconquerable…

Australia is to Oană what Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands were to Gauguin: his retreat into the biblical desert, or into the desert of the Ocean, or into the desert and vanity of Red—dreamlike or not, but always controlled. Among the works are My Dream, Oceanic Dream, and Dream Landscape, the latter somewhat recalling the technique and certain “pieces” of Aurel Manole.

With considerable courage, he enters into dialogue—and perhaps even into competition—with giants such as Ștefan Luchian, Arthur Verona, Ion Țuculescu, Claude Monet, Édouard Manet, Georgia O’Keeffe, Gustav Klimt, Henri Matisse, Ambrosius Bosschaert, Maria van Oosterwijck, Kamatsu Shiro, and the Australian John Perceval; or, if you prefer not to venture quite so boldly, with Teodor Vișan, Sterică Bădălan, Gheorghe Andreescu, Lola Schmierer Roth, Nicolae Mantu, and Cornel Corcăcel, whenever these artists have set—or set—their minds (their thoughts; another work is entitled Three Thoughts!) against Her Majesty Nature and her flowers…

All of this… because he has rediscovered what may be called “Home”! The spiritual space of Primordial Colour, from which all the rainbows of the world are born.

Perhaps Neluș Oană should become the first artist obsessed with the Rainbow, dedicating a series of works to it, perhaps an exhibition—or several exhibitions. He has earned the right to measure himself against the power of the Rainbow, itself a sign of divine peace!

Because, perhaps unnoticed by many, Neluș Oană is also a poet of the Sacred (and of the sacredness of Nature, but of Divinity as well!)… Several titles whisper this discreetly, humbly: Dedication to the Creator, The Lord’s Intensity, The Burning Bush…

So this is also about Faith—and about a faith in Love. Intensity is another key word; there is even another work entitled Intensity, the second after the one I shall mention in the following paragraph… Another work is Fulfilled Love, and indeed the artist may consider himself fulfilled, with a passion for which words are, as usual, far too powerless!

Without a doubt, Neluș Oană demonstrates that prayers can also be made through Colour: games of colour—let them be joy, praise, gratitude, thanksgiving, happiness! A mixture of colour and total surrender, through sacrifice, through The Fire That Does Not Burn, the work somehow chosen as exemplary—the one with which the visit begins, the one reproduced on the poster and in the miniature catalogue—where poppies that are not poppies enter into dialogue with the world of Platonic Ideas!

*************************

It is useful, almost unnecessary, to say that the lines above were inspired by my presence at an unforgettable exhibition opening. Admittedly, I arrived physically some several dozen minutes before the opening itself, but I was there for Neluș Oană’s exhibition home, curated by the painter Gheorghe Miron, manager of the Museum of Visual Art.

The exhibition took place on 18 August 2026 at the Nicolae Mantu Galleries, at 7 p.m.—not 6 p.m., as I had understood it, sic! A trivial detail, perhaps, but an important one for historians of every kind. Gigi Miron had taken care of every detail concerning the display of the 34 works brought all the way from Australia. And one can imagine how interesting the analysis of the colours used will be for art historians: were they Chinese, Australian, Japanese, Korean colours?

The curator mentioned above, Cornel Corcăcel, president of the Galați branch of the Union of Visual Artists of Romania, also spoke, as did the actor Lică Dănilă, another legend of Galați’s cultural life, whom few people know to be, or to have been, a poet; he gave a lyrical recital.

The large audience, among whom was the writer Stan M. Andrei, confirms that Galați is deeply proud of the work and the man who gave birth to it: Neluș Oană! An artist who brings honour to Galați in Sydney, indeed across an entire continent, alongside a poet who remains far too little known, Dorian Stoilescu.

AI Mode Conversation: What Does Houellebecq’s Character Say About Flowers as Sexual Organs?

In Michel Houellebecq’s novel The Map and the Territory (La Carte et le Territoire), published in 2010 and awarded the prestigious Prix Goncourt, the protagonist, Jed Martin, reflects deeply and cynically on flowers.

The narrator, while describing Jed’s childhood drawings, expresses the following striking idea:

“…flowers are nothing other than sexual organs, variegated vaginas adorning the surface of the world, left at the mercy of the insects’ debauchery.”

Context and Meaning

A Schopenhauerian vision: This observation reflects the strong influence of the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer on Michel Houellebecq. Nature is not presented as a romantic or idyllic realm, but as a raw manifestation of the “will to live” and of the pure instinct of reproduction.

The demystification of beauty: Through this comparison, the author demystifies the traditional symbol of purity and beauty—the flower—reducing it to its purely biological, anatomical and sexual function.

In this perspective, the flower ceases to be merely an emblem of beauty, innocence or transcendence. It becomes an image of the biological machinery underlying life itself: reproduction, desire and the relentless continuation of the species.

This Houellebecqian perspective provides an intriguing counterpoint to Neluș Oană’s painting. In Oană’s work, flowers seem to transcend their biological function and become colour, memory, desire, prayer, thought and even a possible form of Paradise. Where Houellebecq exposes the sexual anatomy concealed beneath the beauty of the flower, Oană appears to transform that same biological impulse into an aesthetic and spiritual one.

Thus, the flower can be read in two opposite yet strangely complementary ways: as the raw organ of Nature’s reproductive will, and as a vehicle through which the artist attempts to transform Nature into beauty, meaning and, ultimately, a form of prayer.

Cronici moldovenești, (aproape într-o) Ureche

by Adi G.Secară

In the photography of Joseph-Philippe Bévillard, the world of the Mincéirs – officially known as Irish Travellers – appears not as an exotic spectacle, but as a space of intimacy gained over time, through trust and presence. It is not about an external gaze that consumes the difference, but about a slow, human approach, from which images of great emotional and visual power are born.
The jury of The Edge Street Photography Awards, through the voice of the Streetlight ambassador, noted precisely this rare quality of his work: gentleness. Bévillard’s photographs impress with the way they capture raw and beautiful moments of everyday life without a trace of theatricality imposed from the outside. There is no performance for the camera, but dignity, humor, domestic chaos, pride and a form of community naturalness that is only visible when the photographer has been truly accepted.
Weddings, funerals, Catholic ceremonies, children, animals, moments of play or waiting – all come together in an almost neo-baroque visual universe, saturated with color, ornaments, shiny outfits, adornments and theatrical gestures. But beyond the aesthetic charm of the images, what emerges is the deep structure of a world organized around the extended family, the clan, traditional hierarchies and a strong culture of belonging. In Bévillard, the self-image is not only observed, but affirmed: each portrait seems to claim the right to be seen on its own terms. Each photographed subject carries within itself a personal history, and each frame becomes a form of testimony. In this sense, Bévillard’s photography does not only document a way of life, but also the relationship between identity, memory and representation. The preservation of traditions coexists with adaptation to the pressures of the contemporary world, and this tension produces some of the most vivid images in the series.
On his website, the artist summarizes his simple approach: he has been documenting the culture and lifestyle of Irish nomads and Roma communities since 2009. The beginning of this journey has almost an initiatory dimension. Shortly after moving from the United States to Ireland at the beginning of the new millennium, Bévillard took a taxi from Shannon Airport. On that trip, he first glimpsed the world of Irish nomads. Their effervescent spirit and nomadic lifestyle immediately fascinated him. From that moment on, a personal curiosity transformed, in the years that followed, into a lasting relationship and a project that would define his work. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Joseph-Philippe Bévillard began drawing and painting after losing his hearing at the age of three. His interest in photography emerged in high school, and in 1985 he began his studies at the Rochester Institute of Technology. In 1990, he continued his training at the Art Institute of Boston, where he refined his style by creating square-format black-and-white portraits of people he met in nightclubs and on the street. After working for several major photo labs in Massachusetts, he moved to Ireland in the early 2000s. He returned to photography in 2007, and in 2010 he began working intensively on a series dedicated to Irish nomadic communities – the project that brought him international recognition and which is the basis for Mincéirs, his first book. In the tradition of the great documentary photographers he admires, Bévillard has the ability to transform seemingly chaotic situations into compositions of great visual precision. At other times, in his direct portraits, the lens meets the subject’s gaze head-on, and the image takes on an almost confessional intensity. The saturated, vibrant colors often contrast with the gray Irish skies or the drab backdrops of halting sites and social housing estates. From this chromatic and social tension arises a photograph that is both seductive and lucid.
More than an aesthetic project, Mincéirs is also a gesture of visibility. The volume’s 90 images shed light on a distinct component of Irish heritage and offer a respectful look at a community that continues to struggle for recognition. Bévillard documents everyday life, but at the same time touches on universal themes: childhood and its vulnerability, play, coming of age, gender roles, family, the relationship between humans and animals, but also how traditional communities resist social imbalances through ritual, solidarity and memory. The Mincéirs are an indigenous, traditionally nomadic ethnic minority in Ireland, officially designated by the Irish state as Irish Travellers. Mincéir is the community’s self-designation in their own language, known as Cant or Gammon. Although they speak English, members of the community use this distinct idiom among themselves. The term Traveller refers to their nomadic history and identity. In the past, they were also called whitesmiths, due to their traditions of tinsmithing, but also by pejorative labels such as tinkers, knackers or gypsies – terms felt to be offensive and racializing. Precisely for this reason, the question of the name is not a secondary one: it directly concerns the dignity of representation.
Nomadism, in the case of this community, cannot be reduced to a romantic stereotype or to a supposed archaic permanence. It must also be understood as a historical effect of marginalization, exclusion and social prohibitions on stabilization. As a cultural and psychological legacy, travel thus becomes an existential alternative, not a simple relic of the past. In this light, Bévillard’s images avoid both sentimentality and exoticization: they propose a form of attentive proximity, in which culture, precariousness and pride coexist without simplification.
In a text published on his website in September 2020, Bévillard quoted Bridgid Quilligan, former director of the Irish Traveller Movement, who said that every Traveller in Ireland should be proud of their own identity and not internalize exclusively the negative projections of the majority society. The idea is also essential for understanding these photographs: they do not “give voice” to a community in its place, but visually record an identity that is already alive, already affirmed, already present.
The artist himself writes modestly that he is not an author, but simply someone who has noted down a few facts and a brief summary of the lives of Irish Travellers, hoping that his images say what words cannot fully say. This is precisely where the strength of this project lies. The photographs do not illustrate a discourse; they transcend it. They gather the celebration and the weight, the exuberance and the precariousness, the beauty and the tension of a world that refuses to be reduced to cliché.
Joseph-Philippe Bévillard’s series, spanning a decade, reveals not „secret lives” but rather the depths of a community too often viewed from the outside, through prejudice or sensationalism. Looked at closely, these images speak to something broader than the Traveller identity theme: the universal need for belonging, the power of community forms to endure, and the right of every world to be seen in its full complexity.

Începutul acestui parcurs are aproape o dimensiune inițiatică.

David Hockney belonged, above all, to light. It pulsates in his Californian swimming pools, enters through the wide-open windows of his interiors, glides through the trees of Yorkshire and returns, surprisingly naturally, on the screen of an iPad held by an artist who has never lost his curiosity. Few painters of the modern era have known how to transform the banal into revelation so convincingly. Hockney painted not only the world as he saw it, but the very joy of seeing.
Born on July 9, 1937, in Bradford, Yorkshire, David Hockney was to become one of the essential figures of art in the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. Trained at the Bradford School of Art, then at the Royal College of Art in London, he quickly established himself in the fertile atmosphere of British pop art. And yet, from the beginning, it was clear that he could not be reduced to a single label. Over the course of an extraordinary career, Hockney was, in turn, simultaneously a painter, printmaker, set designer, photographer, image theorist, and pioneer of digital art.
Although his name is often associated with Pop Art, his work far transcends the boundaries of a movement. Hockney challenged traditional perspective, experimented with photomontage, created monumental multi-panel landscapes, and embraced digital technology with a naturalness rare among artists of his generation. He worked with acrylic, etching, Polaroid, fax, photocopier, and tablet, never treating the new tools as mere technical curiosities. For him, each medium was another possibility of seeing.
The decisive moment of his artistic biography remains the encounter with California. In 1964 he arrived for the first time in Los Angeles and was seduced by the harsh light, modern architecture, sharp shadows and domestic geography of a world built around the pool, transparency and solar comfort. From this landscape were born some of the most recognizable images of modern art. In works such as A Bigger Splash, Hockney condensed an entire visual culture into compositions of only apparent simplicity, where radiant color and the tranquility of surfaces hide subtle reflections on time, space and perception. Equally important remain his portraits, among the most refined achievements of contemporary painting. Friends, collectors, writers, artists or family members appear in Hockney’s paintings with a discreet, understated psychological intensity. The artist does not judge his models, but observes them with tenderness and precision, letting posture, color, gesture and space tell the story. Each portrait retains something of the intimacy of a conversation.
In the 1970s and 1980s, Hockney turned his attention to photography, exploring what the still image can and, especially, what it cannot capture. This is how his famous joiners emerged, collages composed of multiple photographs taken from different angles and at different times, intended to contradict the illusion of a single stable perspective. In these works, the influence of Cubism and his fascination with alternative modes of representation become evident. Hockney constantly argued that human vision is fluid, mobile, temporal – and art should reflect this complexity, not simplify it.

David Hockney (1937-2026)

In Szilveszter Makó‘s photographs, the portrait is never just a portrait. It is a setting, a ritual, a stage, a mental construction. The famous faces he photographs – Willem Dafoe, Cate Blanchett, Monica Bellucci, Elle Fanning, Bad Bunny or Michelle Yeoh – are taken out of the usual circuit of celebrity and placed in a universe where fashion, painting, theater and handmade objects meet in a formula that is difficult to classify.

His images seem, at first glance, to have come from a surrealist salon or a family album of an imaginary aristocracy rather than from the pages of a fashion magazine. They have something painterly, absurd, ceremonial. A face can appear framed in a dollhouse, a body can be wrapped like a precious object, a figure can be transformed into a domestic still life. In all these cases, photography becomes less a capture of reality and more a staging of a state.

Makó carefully guards his technical secrets. He talks about a method discovered long ago, a laborious and unorthodox process, but he refuses to explain it in detail. He does so not out of a desire to mystify, but out of an instinct for protection against his own visual language. The texture of his images – the grain, the halos of light, the slightly eroded air of the surface – suggests an analog memory, even when the process includes digital interventions. The result is a photograph that seems touched by time and by hand.

For the Hungarian-born, Milan-based artist, materiality is essential. He is interested in real objects, imperfect surfaces, hand-built props, recycled materials and sets that bear the traces of visible intervention. In his studio, nothing has the air of sterile production. Clothes, costumes, objects, tape, backgrounds, and geometric shapes are brought together before the image is decided. From this controlled collision, the photograph is born.

Natural light is central to this equation. Makó has confessed that without it, he becomes restless. He prefers to bring his photo shoots to Milan precisely because there he can control his working environment, except for one element: the weather. Clouds inevitably remain outside his control. Flash, on the other hand, is almost excluded from his vocabulary. For Makó, controlling light does not mean artificialization, but the ability to keep the image alive, tangible, organic.

This relationship with material and visual discipline has its roots in the artist’s biography. Makó grew up in northeastern Hungary, in an environment marked by proximity to nature, but also by the industrial memory of Eastern Europe. Factories, coal dust, brick walls and the austerity of an education formed by severe generations have contributed to his visual vocabulary. Structure, in this context, is not just an aesthetic choice. It is a form of orientation.

His school years provided him with an early contact with the arts, crafts, and classical languages. He was initially drawn to the fine arts, but painting proved too slow for his temperament. Photography, on the other hand, offered him a different speed: the possibility of immediately fixing an idea, of organizing an appearance, of imposing a rule on a fleeting moment. As a teenager, he photographed hairstyles that he created himself, obsessively documenting ephemeral forms. The image was already becoming an instrument of control.

Makó sometimes shied away from the label of photographer. For him, the image exists before the camera. Photography is the mechanism by which an idea takes shape, not the starting point of the work. Hence the feeling that his portraits are not instantaneous, but stage constructions. The subjects are not captured, but integrated into a system of signs: boxes, pictorial backgrounds, sculptural costumes, monochrome surfaces, ambiguous objects, volumes that simultaneously restrict and amplify.

One of his recurring motifs is the box. Sometimes it appears as an enclosed space in which the model is placed, other times as a repeating geometric shape, as a decoration, an accessory, a checkered floor or a two-dimensional composition. For Makó, the box is simultaneously restriction and liberation. It concentrates the energy of the subject, prevents the dispersion of the gaze and transforms the frame into a place of intensity. In a visual culture dominated by expansion and flow, Makó’s box imposes limit, density and attention.

This need for order does not, however, negate the randomness. On the contrary, the artist insists that a photo shoot must breathe, evolve and even surprise those who produce it. Absolute control risks cooling the image, transforming it into a calculated object, devoid of tension. In his works, interest arises precisely from the negotiation between precision and accident, between meticulous composition and small deviations that leave the image open.

References to art history are visible without becoming literal. In Makó’s photographs, echoes of surrealism, the grotesque, chiaroscuro and classical sculpture can be felt. His figures are idealized, but not perfect. Reality is deformed, not copied. The models do not appear as simple aspirational surfaces, but as characters encountered in an opaque story, of which the viewer receives only a fragment.

This opacity is one of the most powerful qualities of his work. The photographs do not explain, they do not immediately deliver meaning. They propose an atmosphere. A banal object becomes solemn, a garment acquires the status of a sculpture, a modest setting seems like the scene of a ritual. Even celebrities lose their function as recognizable icons and become compositional materials, equal to the light, texture and space around them.

In an industry where the fashion image is often linked to speed, visibility and consumption, Makó practices a form of slowing down. His collaborations with houses and brands such as Schiaparelli, Maison Margiela, Prada, Bottega Veneta, Zara or Adidas do not dilute this vision, but put it in tension with commercial logic. His photography remains recognizable precisely because it refuses the conventional smoothness of the advertising image.

Szilveszter Makó constructs images that seem old and new at the same time: archaic in texture, contemporary in montage, theatrical in gesture and intimate in effect. His portraits do not seek to reveal the psychology of the subject in the classical sense. Rather, he creates a space in which the subject becomes an enigma. And this enigma, carefully lit, framed and kept under control, is the true substance of his photography.

Makó a mărturisit că, fără ea, devine neliniștit.

Born in China and based in London, Hongxi Li is an artist who works at the intersection of performance, installation, sculpture and moving image. Her rigorously conceptualized practice investigates how social, economic and ideological systems shape behaviour, affect and the body, with a particular interest in the tensions between post-communist legacies and the Sino-capitalist logic of the present.

Her artistic universe is constructed from familiar objects, architectural forms and symbols of functional design, reconfigured into immersive environments that become stages for performative actions. With a finesse that combines humour, repetition and a sharp critical lucidity, her works trace the way in which power structures – economic, urban, cultural – insinuate themselves into our gestures, emotions and the way we occupy space.

At the center of this practice is Jolene, a recurring fictional personae, recognizable by her impeccable corporate attire and almost mechanical control of her presence. Jolene embodies the systemic pressures, aspirations, and emotional discomfort associated with the corporate imaginary of contemporary East Asia. More than a character, she functions as a critical medium through which the artist distorts social roles and illuminates the fragile balance between individual will and the mechanisms that structure contemporary life.

In the performance Sandcastle, Jolene steps into a garden installation loaded with a ton of soil. Reenacting the gestures of childhood play, she uses forms to mass-produce small tall buildings, like miniature skyscrapers. As these towers rise and fall incessantly, the work reveals the exhausting and absurd rhythms of relentless urban development, transforming play into a choreography of wear, repetition, and alienation.

The same concern for the relationships between control, authority and spatial imagination is also found in QUANTA, a project built around a monumental outdoor sculpture, accompanied by a silent performance. Evoking both a surveillance tower and an ambiguous monument, the work explores power dynamics through spatial tension and gestural economy. The title – derived from the term „quantum”, the smallest unit of energy – refers to those invisible forces that structure control, resistance and collective behavior. Overall, Hongxi Li’s work is notable for its ability to transform common objects and design languages into tools of social analysis. Through multimedia installations that can include sculpture, sound, smell, video and live performance, the artist constructs situations in which the viewer does not just witness a representation, but is absorbed in a scenography of contemporary pressure. In this space, irony becomes a critical method, and repetition – a symptom of a world in which development, productivity and conformity are repeated until exhaustion.

O artistă a iluziilor contemporane

In the enigmatic universe of 20th-century art, the paintings of Balthus (1908–2001) fascinated and provoked, raising questions about the boundaries between innocence and eroticism, sacred and profane. Between 2009 and 2011, Japanese photographer Hisaji Hara made a remarkable contribution with his series “A Photographic Portrait of Balthus’ Paintings”, which iconically and delicately transcribes these themes into photographic language, avoiding the pitfalls of digital manipulation and inviting a deep reflection on the relationship between image, time and perception.

Melancholy and double perspective: from brush to camera

Hara is not content to copy the reproductions of the French-Polish painter. He transcends painting, preserving the melancholic poses and expressions of teenagers with that ambiguous aura between purity and provocation, but integrates them into sets and costumes with an unmistakable Japanese aesthetic. Japanese school uniforms, vintage interiors and the cinematic lighting of the photodrama create a subtle bridge between the West and the East, between analog and digital, between past and present. Thus, his photography becomes a cultural and temporal bridge that invites a reassessment of the perspective on adolescence and the fragile boundaries between subject and viewer.

A vintage technique in the service of a timeless aesthetic

Using medium film photography, albumen prints and multiple exposures, Hara leaves behind the saturated colors of Balthusian painting for a monochrome, mystical and atmospheric aesthetic. This technical choice is not just a stylistic exercise, but a profound stratagem that highlights the forms and suggests a tension between innocence and eroticism – a tension that crosses both the interwar period and a subtle commentary on the present.

Photography as ritual and theatrical staging

Working meticulously in camera, without digital interventions, Hara captures the pictorial essence through carefully calibrated poses and expressions. This practice is reminiscent of theatrical rituals and emphasizes the presence and posture of the subjects, rendering the psychological complexity of the characters and the atmosphere charged with subtleties of the images.

Adolescence – a territory of purity and wonder

Both Balthus and Hara explore adolescence as a mythical territory, charged with purity and contradictions, but also with social prejudices. In this sense, Hara’s photographic series becomes a critical meditation that reveals how fragile and complex this stage of life is, put to the test in the face of often harsh personal and cultural histories. He avoids transforming the characters into simple erotic objects, preferring instead to envelop them in a quiet emptiness, where depth and ambiguity persist.

An invitation to reinterpretation and sensitivity

Hisaji Hara thus constructs a body of work that challenges us to rethink not only the relationship between subject and viewer, but also our notions of innocence, decency, desire, and taboo. His photographs become a terrain for exploring the tension between the pure and the profane, a refined and sensitive reinterpretation of a body of work that has already questioned the artistic and moral conventions of its time.

Through this series, Hara manages to bring a modern voice to a classic theme, explore cultural metamorphoses, and create a bridge between Western imagination and East Asian aesthetics, between painting and photography. It is an obsessive work, yet full of respect and reverence, a photographic ode that invites us to look more closely, to understand, and to feel in a timeless and universal register.

For the first time, the Russian protest art collective Pussy Riot and the Ukrainian group FEMEN have collaborated in a joint action at the Venice Biennale, one of the most important international events dedicated to contemporary art.

The protest took place in front of the Russian Pavilion, in the context of this country’s return to the Biennale for the first time since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine. More than fifty activists, dressed in black and wearing distinctive pink balaclavas, set off colored smoke rockets and performed the song Disobey. The action, carried out under slogans such as “Blood is the art of Russia” and “Art for the spectacle, graves under the ground”, temporarily interrupted the activity of the pavilion and attracted a large audience.

Members of the two groups described their gesture as an artistic intervention intended to highlight the tensions between cultural creation and the current geopolitical context. Both Pussy Riot and FEMEN are known for using performance art as a form of social protest. Their performances combine punk aesthetics, political symbolism and direct action, transforming public or institutional spaces into protest scenes.

The intervention in Venice took place against the backdrop of extensive debates regarding Russia’s participation in the Biennale. Representatives of the European Commission expressed reservations about the inclusion of the Russian pavilion, considering it incompatible with the ethical principles of cultural funding, while Italian authorities gave divergent responses. Tensions also increased after the resignation of the international jury, which raised concerns about the presence of countries whose leaders are under investigation by the International Criminal Court.

Russia’s participation, but also the parallel protests related to the Israeli pavilion, transformed the 61st edition of the Biennale into a space of confrontation between artistic freedom, moral responsibility and political commitment. In this context, the joint action of Pussy Riot and FEMEN is part of the evolution of contemporary artivism, which combines aesthetic expression with civic message, reclaiming art as a legitimate means of dialogue and contestation.
