Neo, my sister's sweet puppy, contemplating his future.

After last year's 3-day I suspect my sister and I needed a short break. We had a great time and it was a great sister-bonding experience for each of us, but WOW, was it exhausting! I'm just now, three months later, able to start getting back into a routine.

Actually, I shouldn't say that. It's not all entirely true. Every year, for the last three years, I've been applying themes to the year. 2009 was the Year of Chill, 2010 was the Year of Happiness, and this year is the Year of Simplicity. So the first few months of the year, I took a break and re-evaluated my life.

This all began when I realized for a woman in my early 30's I was far too stressed, unhealthy, angry, and just plain too unhappy. I had lost my ability to cope and enjoy life and I desperately needed to relearn those skills again.

Rather than try and tackle it all at once, I decided to start small. It began with the Year of Chill. I told myself, this year it's time to just "chill the heck out." I figured that would be a good place to start. I really needed to learn to how to properly evaluate what deserved an elevated heart rate, dilated blood vessels, migraine, backache, and weight gain and what didn't. When put into that perspective, I learned pretty quick to chill. What took forever to learn was remembering to evaluate the situation in those terms. And in case you're wondering...it took me a whole year to retrain my thinking; to remember to stop and think before feeling and reacting.

2010 was the Year of Happiness. Now that I had learned to chill, the next step was to start paying attention and stop judging. I decided I was done looking for the next best thing. I think in our society now, with the constant parade of stuff and information, our brains have been retrained to be in a constant state of expectation. The problem is, when we're constantly expecting we can't enjoy what's going on right now and we miss out. So I adopted the Stop, Drop, and Roll mantra I learned in elementary school in the off chance I should catch fire. "Stop" what you're thinking, "Drop" what you're doing, and "Roll" around in the moment. Corny I know, but man did it work. Once again, the hard part was remembering to remember. But once I did, my life was brand new to me. Even my cats started liking me more, not cuddle up on a cold night more, but at least they don't run away when I walk into the room any more.

So this brings me to 2011. Now that I had tackled chilling out and recognizing happiness, the next logical step to me was a good cleaning out of my brain. I wanted to sift through my habits and needs and figure out what was useful and what was taking up space. I needed to figure out if it was life that was stressing me out, or my approach to life that was stressing me out.

I live a relatively blessed life. I have a good job, we own a business, a house, cars, have healthy food on the table, and family and friends that love us and we love back. When you really think about it, what the heck else does one need? This ties directly back to the expectations I was talking about in the last paragraph. The world, as it's been shaped today, makes a person feel as if what they have isn't enough and so we again spend our hard earned money buying stuff we really don't need to feed a learned need that doesn't have to be.

So to tackle this I dubbed this year the Year of Simplicity. I sat down New Year's Eve and wrote down a game plan for uncluttering my mind and life, breaking it down into steps as I figured that in order to tackle this year's task I needed to be much more organized. It wasn't a matter of retraining my mind, this task required physical work.

January I decided to work on my health. I started keeping a log of daily stressors, chronicling everything! I did this for about a week. It started being obvious real quick how ridiculous I could be. Fortunately, it also became really obvious that most of the things I was stressing about I could decide to not stress out about (as they had nothing to do with me; I'm nosy), or I could actually do something to prevent the stress. This led to me evaluating the everyday actions of my life. Meaning I decided to clean out my house!

I learned that my house and how it was organized was a huge cause of my stress. We have too much stuff and I honestly didn't think we did. Moreover, the stuff we have that we do need isn't organized in such as way as to be useful. So my husband and I are going room by room, cleaning out everything we don't need or use, having a garage sale, and donating everything we can't sell. Just doing this and having my mind geared towards this makes me feel so much more in control.

Who knows if any of this will work. However applying a theme to each year, having something to work towards and look forward to, is healing in itself. My life isn't perfect but I'm the type of person who finds more in the pursuit rather than the attainment.

Walking 60 Miles for Boobies this Weekend :)

Tonight, I ran around downtown picking up last minute things for my trip. My sister and I are road tripping to San Diego so we can spend 3 days walking 60 miles for breast cancer. I am super excited and a little nervous because I do not know what to expect. I got a new pair of shoes because everyone keeps telling me, I am going to want a second pair for the second day, so it took me awhile but I found a pair equally as cool as my beloved Brooks. I then ran to target and raided the isle with all the sample bottles for mini travel product & got me a cute pink drinking bottle. I also got me a twin blow up mattress, It was only $11.00... SCORE, my sister wanted to get those self inflatable mats, but I read those are so uncomfortable and being still sick from the deficiency and 9 weeks away from any symptom relief, I am not risking it.

I think I am going to pack my stuff in my big Samsonite, that way my sleeping bag, fits inside. The clothing & The colorful tops that I am packing for this event makes me smile, bright blue, bright pink, bright purple, my favorites, the tops make up for the plain black pants I have. Chris bought me a light pink hoodie it's very appropriate & a bit rocker girly'ish & I LOVE IT!

I am looking forward to meeting people, hearing stories, and spending time to help raise awareness for the cause. I hope to take lots of pictures and share them with you all, I think I will set up my flicker on my iphone or something, I will have to figure it out tomorrow. I am also planning on bringing a journal so I can write everything down so I do not forget a thing, I want to remember it all!

Well I am off to bed, it is late and I have to finish up some orders tomorrow and prepare for my trip.

A Day to Remember

I am taking time to remember that day

In early 2001, Downtown Sacramento the assembly had adjourned and my sister was heading home. She was on her way to her car with her boss, I believe they were getting ready to cross the street when a gentleman in a semi truck allowed them to cross, they crossed the street safely, and he then proceeded to ram his truck into the south side of the Capitol building he died instantly no one else was hurt & I don't think they ever found out why he did what he did.

8 Months later ....

I am working at a curriculum architecture firm in downtown Naperville, IL, it was early in the morning we had just settled in, drinking our coffee & hot coco one of my good friends called me over to her computer she was streaming the BBC live (yes BBC streamed live back then, only 1 channel not the million they have now) she didn't say a word I think she was in shock the live feed was streaming the World Trade Center, at this point were getting a faster feed than the news reports on the radios so several co-workers had ditched their radios and walked over to watch, pretty soon the whole office is behind us watching the live stream, when more reports started to come in, I just freaked out remembering what happened early in the year with the semi-truck I tried to get a hold of my sister, but I could not, the lines out were tied up due to people trying to call out, I don't know how many times I tried a call her but I remember a co-worker knew someone who worked in one of the towers she was trying to call but she then gave up and walked around gathering people, standing in the middle of the room hand in hand, people of all religions, and even those that did not believe held hands and prayed.

I never felt so sad, so scared, so far away from home and yet so connected with so many people at once, we eventually got through it, I got a hold of my sister I told her "get out of that government building, were being attacked", (hey I had no idea what the heck was going on) and my co-worker got a hold of her friend the following day and found out he was very late to work due to an appointment and when he got to the building it had already been hit and he never entered the building.

The next day a few of my friends and I took time off work and went to the city hall for a ceremony it was right across the river from our work, we held hands with strangers and prayed. We put flags in the grass to honor the lives of those that had passed, I remember walking across the bridge and looking back at the flags, and just this horrible feeling of loss, and knowing that so many people were out there not knowing where a loved one might be, that there were those alive and trapped, heart breaking.

We stood here & prayed, later in 2003 this memorial was placed, it was one of the first memorials in America to be placed. The memorial takes its theme from an article written by Commander Shanower entitled "Freedom Isn't Free." In it, he wrote: "Those of us in the military are expected to make the ultimate sacrifice when called. The military loses scores of personnel each year. Each one risked and lost his or her life in something they believed in, leaving behind friends, family and shipmates to bear the burden and celebrate their devotion to our country...Freedom isn't free."

I will never forget September 11th and the days following. So many loved people were lost that day, and so many in the war proceeding the events of 9-11 have been lost. Please take time today to remember that day and honor those lost.

Sunday, Aimee and I drove over to the American River Bikeway to pound out those 10 miles. Thankfully the weather wasn't too hot (although plenty warm) and we were able to enjoy ourselves. We found several little critters greeting us along the way. Usually they're pretty skiddish, but this little one just hung out and watched us and all the other people on the trail. There were also several baby rabbits, but I couldn't get any pictures of them.

I have been so very busy with the business! I have been working long hours to get back on track, bed time lately is 3am, and two nights I didn't even sleep just worked through until the next day. The good news is I am getting caught up, yay!

So that shin thing from last week ended-up being a pulled muscle. I nearly couldn't walk Saturday. So I took Saturday and Sunday off to heal. A week delay in training, but it's better to get better.

Hard to believe we'll be doing nearly that much in ONE DAY!!!

I participated in a training walk this week on Thursday. It was nice to meet some new people. But they were both taller than me. And while our pace was the same, my little legs had to take almost two steps to their one. I pride myself on the fact that I can walk a 15 minute mile, sometimes under, but man I had a hard time keeping up. Maybe that's something I should write about; how shorties and tall folk can train together.

My husband and I had the inside of our house painted this week and it ended up being a great time to weed through some of my stuff, especially my books. I donated three bags full of paperbacks to the library, but I have almost eight bags of hardbacks, some signed first editions, that I thought I'd try and sell as a fundraiser. Ahhh... Nature

Walking has always been my preferred method of exercise, even before I decided to participate in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure. The folks who planned my neighborhood did an excellent job of making it walker, biker, and jogger friendly.

There are trails, bike paths, plenty of shaded walkways, and a nice open space preserve that is fantastic to meander through.

This time of year the little creatures are out in full force. Little brown field mice, jack rabbits, birds, snakes, lizards, etc... I couldn't get any pictures, those guys are fast. But through the dried grass you can see and hear movement.

So the reason for my choice of walking as exercise isn't because it's good for you physically, but because in my neighborhood, it's the best destresser imaginable.

I'm taking to this 3-day training rather well. While my previous walks lasted at most 3-miles, now I'm trekking 5-10+ miles and I'm enjoying finding new places to explore right in my own backyard. And I'm not only doing something good for my body and soul, I'm doing something good for other people. That, more than anything the good Lord provides for me to see, is the most therapeutic of all.

13 Down and 13 To Go!

Neva here-

It's just a short 13 weeks until the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure in San Fransisco! I can't believe how the time has flown. I started training and fundraising nearly 26 weeks ago and I can tell you that I had no idea how life consuming it would be, especially now since the big 10+ mile walks on Saturdays and Sundays have begun....EEK!

I have learned a few things these past weeks...about myself and about walking. Try spending a few hours each day with nothing but your thoughts...it's enlightening.

First, music: I thought for certain my ipod would keep me occupied, but after about 4-5 miles I can't stand those things in my ears any more (one side is broken which just makes things worse). And in those 4-5 miles my music needs change, too. I'm good with about 2 and a half miles of AC/DC at the beginning, just to get me moving. Then I switch to some country around mile 3 and by mile 5 the contemporary Hawaiian channel on my Pandora app is just perfect. After that, those earbuds come out and it's the beautiful sound of the birds that keeps me going.

Second, of course that's when the thinking begins and I start concentrating on stupid things. Like my backpack isn't fitting and I really need to go shopping for a new one. Which is so not true. I LOVE my backpack. I got it in Hawaii and it's just one big sack. It's comfortable and holds everything. But during this point in the walk I can find fault with just about everything I own in my walking life, from my brand new shoes to which kleenex I have in my bag to blow my nose. This is really just me looking for an excuse to go shopping. I try to march through this thought pattern quickly.

But I could go on for ages about what goes through my mind during the long walks, but it's boring really. So I'll just list a few things I've learned:

1. I split up the long walks. Last week on Sunday I did 9 miles...4 in the morning and 5 in the evening. This probably won't work so well when I get to those really long 15+ mile walks, but for the 8-15 miles it's a good strategy for me. And in this heat (it was roughly 100 last Sunday) it's probably the only way to do it. Today I'm walking 10 miles so I'll do 5 this morning and 5 this evening. It keeps me out of the sun and it's easier on my feet.

2. After my little trip to the hospital two months ago, I bring nothing but Propel or Gatorade on my walks. The heat here can be weighing and water just doesn't cut it. I also carry walnuts. For some reason those little guys give me a good amount of energy.

3. Tight clothes, nothing loose. Seriously, loose clothes are crap. They rub in all the wrong spots. I never, in all my life thought I could get chaffing on my calves from my little cropped walking pants. The legs of those things are loose and the bottom brushes-up against my legs when I'm walking. Talk about obnoxious.

4. Ice, even if you don't think you need to. When doing several long walks back-to back, my muscles and especially my tendons ache something awful. I've found that icing my calves and Achilles tendons helps A LOT! Much more than popping ibuprofen. I even ice my feet, which in the heat and after a long walk feels fantastic!

5. I have had more people ask me if it was me they saw walking while they were driving. I really need to take advantage of this. A flag or a sign to wear during each walk with my fundraising info. I just have to figure a good way to do it.

So these are just a few things I've learned in my 13 weeks of training. With 13 more to go and then the big weekend in October, I'm bound to learn more. This has been honestly a wonderful experience. True, it's just walking, but it's also so much more than that.

After almost a month of having an infection, being on antibiotics that gave me a crazy allergic reaction, hives, clogged ear and swollen glads, along with being super freaking tired, at 1:00pm I am going in to the doctors. Hopefully it will be quick and I will be back to work asap, as I have several orders to fill!!

Shiny Sparkily Things -- My FAVORITE

I am feeling a bit better today, so I forced Chris to take me out, even though I am still on antibiotic and have 18 days left. We had some really great Indian food for dinner, I couldn't eat much 1/2 of it went home with us. At dinner, I couldn't stop staring at these beautiful Indian ladies feet... wait... No I don't have a foot fetish SICK but I DO have a really cute flip flop fetish.....this group of ladies next to us, ALL had beautiful sparkly flip flops on! I totally wanted to steal their shoes! They had beautiful designs and crystals galore, ohhh the light when it hit them just right, they were just shooting off reflections like a disco ball, I was in heaven! I should have asked them where they got them, where do you find such cute flip flops? I have no idea, I didn't ask I was too embarrassed what if they looked at my feet and saw my cheap Target flips, I couldn't live down the embarrassment <-- that was me being dramatic, I didn't ask them because they didn't speak English at all, and I couldn't figure out a hand gesture for "where did you buy your cute flip flops" I will work on that!

Sooo...speaking of sparkles, I have an artist I would like to add to our Sweet Treats Treasury. This artist has been advertising on our page through Project Wonderful, and I have to admit because of her ad, I have spent some time browsing through her shiny sparkly selection, I love her designs and I know you will love what she has to offer as well.

I love this necklace, the beautiful crystal has wire wrapping around the top to hold it to the chain (I love the wire wrap look, my sister can do it, I can't it blows my mind and mystifies me because I cannot wrap a wire for crap) this would look beautiful with a red dress, I am sure it would go well with any color, but I choose red!!

Chalcedony Earrings

I love these earrings, I think these will be loved by all. I love the color of the stone, they remind me of this ring my friend told me was on that movie Twilight, I never watched Twilight past the 1st movie, because I am only into really lame TV.... not movies, (sorry Twilight fans I don't get it, mom gave me the books, maybe I should try?) when she mentioned the ring, I had no idea what she was talking about, when she showed me it, I just smiled, nodded and said Ohhh..COOL I love that stone, and here is a similar beautiful milky stone this time with hues of blue, and a lovely cut. I love it, you can only change names of things in your blog, I hope the artist does not mind, but THESE ARE MY FAVORITE OK!! If anyone were to browse this shop and pick me out a gift these would be it, they would see them and they would know immediately that they belonged to me. Really honestly how BEAUTIFUL are these? In closing, this artist is great, I love her work, it is absolutely beautiful and stunning. I think that the artist really has a great grasp for what us ladies like and it shows in all her work, right down to her beautifully detailed wire wrapping. Project Wonderful is so Wonderful

I have been playing around with Project Wonderful for about a month now, and I think they have a lot to offer to help new bloggers and crafters get the word out on their art.

Project Wonderful offers two services, the first is the ability for you to advertise your products on blogs and other website the second is for you to have advertisements on your own site or blog and the potential to make some money. I personally love to see all the artist that advertise on our page and they give me ideas for Artist features so I think its useful for content on my blog, we have our bidding set at $0.00 to start so a lot of the advertisers on our page do not pay a dime and we will always keep it that way.

Advertising your Product
What I like about their advertising service is that you can put your ad's on auto, you just pick a few categories and have them bid on ads for you, you can also pick a budget that you set or you can bid manually. I prefer to bid manually because I have control over where my ad's go. Project Wonderful is special in the fact that it allows you to target your audience and it also allows you to bid on ad's and if your the only bidder you don't pay, so you could start to play around with it and not have a cent to go towards advertising, as long as you bid $0.00 you get free advertising and how great is that?
