Summer is over

Ok… the Summer of Rails has been over for a while, but I’ve been so busy with other projects and the craziness that was RubyConf, I haven’t had a chance to officially acknowledge summer’s end.

On a personal level, it was a great summer. I went to RailsConf, finally learned Rails, shipped my first app (which turned out to be pretty popular), and gave a talk at sd.rb on my experiences.

For everyone else, thanks for participating in this project. The quality and scope of the SoR projects continues to amaze me.

My personal list of favorites goes like this:

Juggernaut — push server for Flash apps
Brew Journal — web app for brewing beer (still unlaunched though)
Myth of Miroha — Rails-based RPG
Stu.dicio.us — Tools for students
Ask the Guys — Normal guys go “Dear Abby”
Street Edibles — Database of ‘urban food sources’ in Portland. (Please add other cities soon!)
BeloofdisBeloofd — Promise tracker for Dutch politicians

The Summer of Rails will probably be back soon (in one form or another), but until then, I hope everyone continues to be inspired by the potential of Rails.

When does the Summer of Rails end?

Many people have asked… when does the Summer of Rails end? End of August? Labor Day?

Well, according to the Wikipedia entry on summer, the official end of summer in North America is on September 23.

That works for me. If SoR ends on September 23, that gives everybody six more weeks to participate in the Summer of Rails.

So, if you haven’t started a project yet, get going!

Summer of Rails update

Hope everyone’s summer is going well. Here’s a quick update on the Summer of Rails front:

I launched Graffletopia, my first SoR app, last week.
There are currently about 15 SoR projects in various stages of development. I’ve listed the public ones on the projects page.
Some projects are pretty impressive — Juggernaut, an xmlsocket server for Rails, and the Myth of Miroha, a Rails-based RPG, just to name a few.
I’ve started development on a Rails app which will keep track of all SoR projects.

From here on out, I’ll be blogging about the Summer of Rails daily. If you’ve got something you want to share (cool links, Rails tips, etc.), drop me a line.

Welcome to the Summer of Rails

Hi, I’m Patrick Crowley and I’ve been writing Rails apps for exactly one week. So I guess that qualifies me as a newbie.

I’ve actually been drinking the Rails kool-aid since I crashed RubyConf last year, but until a week ago, I hadn’t done any real Rails development. And I had lots of excuses. Busy with other projects. A lot to learn. Living on the streets. (Ok, I made that up.)

But I bet I’m not the only slacker out there. If you’re like me, you’re going to learn Rails. And you’re going to make some cool stuff.

So why not get started now?
