Are you ready for this? You are rich. I know it doesn’t it feel like it. It seems like finances wouldn’t be so stressful if that were true. But it is (true) and they still are (stressful)—why? For a lot of us, it comes down to this: the affluence we’ve been entrusted with has mastered us. We’re slaves when we should be stewards.

This series walks us through these issues and more, knowing that freedom never comes from perfecting the craft of slavery… it comes from knowing the Deliverer who loves us and loves to see us “get it”.

In our quest to understand God we often find ourselves asking: Who is the Holy Spirit?

The lesser talked about person of the God-head can sometimes seem like a straggler in the trinity or some kind of mythical figure relegated to the ancients.

But scripture is clear, from the second verse right on through to the last chapter of Revelation— the Spirit is present and active in the pages of the Bible. He grants power without pride, gifts without competition, conviction without condemnation, abundant life and transcendent peace. The Spirit of God was there.

And He is here. He is eternal and therefore, He is now. The Holy Spirit is moving, speaking, loving, and equipping — shaping you and impacting this world through His presence. The Spirit of God is
working in ways that are critical to recognize if we are to love God and serve Him well in our everyday lives.

In this 6-week series we seek to open our eyes to what the Spirit of God is doing and what He’s willing to do in our relationships, our work, and our worship.

True or false *Your boss is an idiot.*
True or False *You have to fight for your right to party.*
True or False The man is keeping you down.

Authority. Just hearing the word leads to cringing, rolling eyes and some choice words (under your breath, of course). After all, the idea of submitting to anyone other than yourself can seem ridiculous. What if they don’t have your best interest at heart? What if their way of doing things is different than your own? And even when you’re certain someone does have your best interests at heart – that doesn’t guarantee those interests are what you actually want.

But, maybe our idea of “authority” needs a little redefining…a little redeeming.

Rightly understood, it’s not some unfair, cosmic power struggle between the human and the divine. It’s not some celestial game of chess in which we play a pawn. It’s something deeper, more mysterious, and even beautiful. “Biblical authority” is designed to protect us, to guide us, to bring to completion the good works that God has started – within us, our family, our friends.

In this 3-week series we explore why we have authority issues and why authority is such a crucial issue in our lives.

Having stuff is stressful. And having more stuff isn’t necessarily less stressful. For a lot of us, it comes down to this: the affluence we’ve been entrusted with has mastered us. We’re slaves when we should be stewards.

When our desire to serve Jesus collides with our wealth, the issues that arise aren’t always what you think. We feel guilty about what we have when we shouldn’t. We think debt is as ordinary as it is common. We think God is great as long as he doesn’t ask for more than He’s “supposed to.” Etcetera, etcetera. This series examines these issues and more, knowing that freedom never comes from perfecting the craft of slavery… it comes from knowing the Deliverer who loves us and loves to see us “get it.”

We are image-bearers, vehicles of grace through which God chooses to bring about newness to Earth, as is his good pleasure. We do not bear an image of One who hides. We bear an image of One who wins. What if the only insurmountable obstacle we face is our fear of letting God fight, through us, the battle for which he has already claimed victory?

Living by faith makes it hard to act on what we do understand because of all the things we don’t understand. But what if living by faith is the only way for us to learn what we can really be sure of? What if all our stumbling and getting back up is what testifies to others the depth of our certainty?
What if our joy in our dubious circumstances is an evangelism more potent than measurable data? What if following Jesus means you won’t always know where you’re going, but you’ll know it’s more beautiful than any place you’ve set out for on your own?

While preparing for the upcoming “Of Whales and Worms” series, based on the story of Jonah, we came across a letter written during the Assyrian Empire. And, as luck would have it, it was written by the prophet Hosea to none other than Jonah, himself.

Here’s what it said:

Dear Jonah,

I hope this letter finds you well, my friend. I understand your frustration about going to Nineveh—rotten luck! But, to get straight to the point, let me give you some tips I’ve learned about dealing with instructions from our father Yahweh…

Don’t bother running! Even if you do run from God, you can’t outrun Him. (If He doesn’t catch you himself, He’ll send something to do the job!)

Best to just listen closely, and pay attention from the get-go. Remember that God will slow things down—or even stop them—to get your attention! (Like stick you someplace where you can’t leave, and all there’s left to do is pray.)

Whatever you do, don’t try to fight Him! There’s no use fighting God—He will redeem others through us if He wants to. Even others we don’t like. (It’s just more painful when we’re unwilling!)

Getting bitter will only make things worse for you, so don’t go fishing for sympathy there. (Our bitterness can’t thwart God’s love or his plans—only how we experience these things.)

Pay close attention to what’s got your belly in such a knot! (The things you don’t like about God’s character probably indicate best the things in you that need to be transformed in you—even if the truth is hard to swallow.)

Good luck, Jonah—I’m sure you’ll have a whale of a tale to tell me when you get back from Nineveh!

We believe that God is calling us again to risk, sacrifice, and pray—to do what He’s called us to do and bring Jesus near to those who are far from Him.

It’s what you become when the wisdom in your head finally makes it’s way to your hands and feet.

We know that our words have the power to build up or tear down, and yet we fail to be intentional with what we say. We know that trials produce character, but everybody wants character and nobody wants trials. We know that accomplishing any lofty goal requires single minded focus, but we rarely commit to anything to the point of personal sacrifice. We want the sum of our days to show us faithful, but we fill our hours with a faithless series of small decisions.

Have we over-spiritualized the tangible calls and commands of scripture for so long, that we don’t know what faith in action looks like? Maybe our understanding of faith lived out could be dramatically different—if we can just get that wisdom to sink down into our fingers and toes.

In a world where prudence and self-restraint are roughly as popular as chastity and ice dancing, thrift is a lost art. It has been reduced (when considered at all) to a tragic necessity for dullards who cannot keep up with life in the fast lane. It should not be so…

Thrift is not stinginess, nor is it greed. Practiced rightly, it destroys both. Thrift creates margin in a world that squeezes it. It guards against means becoming ends. It affords greater opportunity to honor God and love people. It is biblical, it is wise, it is good. Thrift is believing that “contentment with Godliness is great gain.”

A well ordered heart and an increasingly well ordered life are gifts and blessings God offers— He is the cause and effect, thrift is a means. For the next four weeks we will walk through what scripture says about more of less and less of more… and it just might be the beginning of something beautiful.

Our lives are not a waiting room for eternity… granted they are brief and not always altogether pleasant, but they are not meaningless, nor is the way we ought to live them up for grabs. If we are in Christ, then we have been raised up to and for new life.

So then, how ought we to live and why? This is the rub… there is not only confusion over some of the things we should and shouldn’t be about. For example, how much should a Christian give? What does it mean to forgive like Jesus did? Is it okay to _________?

We’ve got more questions than we do answer. And, there is also the question of why? Why does it matter? If God will be the One setting us and the world around us to rights through His grace and power and our “ticket is punched,” then what good are rules about how to live anyway? And, isn’t grace opposed to the law? Who needs laws when grace leads the way?

What does it mean to live Christianly, and why does it matter?

In ancient Judah, many kings rose to power. Some reigned as long as 55 years – others, as short as three months. Each king chose his own path. Some chose to follow God closely; others did not. Join us for the next four weeks as we embark on a journey through the lives of three of these kings – Reheboam, Asa, and Mannesah.

The paths of three kings lie before us. Their legacy has shaped the history of God’s people, for better or worse. As we walk down the dusty roads of Judah alongside them, we have the chance to learn from their successes and failures, their triumphs and mistakes, their obedience and disobedience.

Four week. . . three Kings. . . From their stories, wisdom can be gleaned for us all.

Have you ever uttered these phrases in moments of frustration?

Maybe you are exactly where you thought you would be at the start of this year. If so, kudos from us (seriously, well played). But, maybe not… Maybe you thought by this time you would be finished with school, married, or financially secure. Maybe you think you should be retired by now, or free of the habit, or a better person all around. Maybe you are right, but “would have and should have” never push forward—they only pull back. And, you can’t go back.

The only place Jesus can meet you is where you are. The only place you can meet Him is in reality. It’s now. Not because that’s the only place He is, it’s just the only place you are. Jesus isn’t near as concerned with your yesterdays as He is your today. You are here. So is Jesus.

When we give our lives to Jesus, we trust Him to begin a good work in us. He plants within us seeds and cultivates their growth. The fruits He wants us to bear are traits such as patience, joy, hope, humility, contentment, and charity.

All of our own attempts at growing these fruits are futile without the transforming power of God. And yet, we do have a part to play in the process. What does that look like? What level of effort is required from us?

As God begins to work in us, we uncover a great mystery. The mystery of complete transformation through God’s grace alone, yet not opposed to our own efforts. Jesus is the Finisher and Perfector of your faith, and you can trust that “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."

In today’s fast-paced world, busyness has been equated with productivity. When a spare moment is found in our day, isn’t it easy to immediately look for a new task to fill it with? But in our efforts to meet the demands of life, we can forget that God Himself, the Creator and Sustainer of the universe, worked six days and rested on the seventh.

It is often in our stillness, not our busyness, that we discover the most about God. The Sabbath is more than a day off from work. It’s a gift from God that allows us to reflect on His holiness, restore our souls, spend time with our Father, and engage in the joy of community.

Join us for the next 4 weeks as we learn how to rest well.

Abraham had many interactions with God. In each one, God revealed something unique about Himself, and Abraham responded accordingly. Because God is Provider, Abraham could have faith. Because God is Everlasting, Abraham could have hope. And because God is Love, Abraham was free to love.

There are moments when God reveals Himself to us. Like Abraham, our response matters. The clearer the window through which we see God, the clearer the mirror by which we can reflect His character. God is always offering opportunities to see Him more clearly. How we respond to those opportunities has much to do with how clearly other people can see God through us.

In this series, we will walk alongside Abraham and see God through the light of His revelation.

God is in the details, but the devil can play there, too. Without perspective, or with the wrong perspective, details can be misleading. With the right perspective, those same details can be exceedingly helpful. A broad vision is required to be focused without growing myopic in matters of faith and practice. If we don’t have a clear understanding of who Jesus is, we risk twisting His message to suit our taste.

So if there are times “you can’t see the forest for the trees…”, or if you are often on the wrong side of the thin line between paying attention to detail and getting mired in it, then this series will be helpful to you.

We’re going to step back and look at the forest from the trees. Jesus is the Redeemer. He is our Lord. He is the One who loves the whole world well. These three characteristics paint a picture that frames the rest of the story.

Meet Peter, a coward turned warrior for Christ: willing to die for his Lord. Meet John, an everyday fisherman who dropped a stable career to follow Jesus to the ends of the earth. Meet Paul, a bitter skeptic turned passionate believer who shared the Gospel with everyone he met. In times of uncertainty, fear, and persecution, they gave themselves to an eternal vision and leaned into it with uncommon resolve.

The apostles of the past carried on God’s vision to apostles of the present. Their story is one we are still writing. Two thousand years later, our calling remains the same – to share the hope and grace of Jesus with others.

Apostles are ordinary people who perform extraordinary acts for the kingdom of God.

Look around, they are everywhere. The college student who is trying to share the Gospel with his dorm mates. The stay at home mom who becomes the hands and feet of Jesus as she cares for her kids. The blue-collar worker who is working hard to provide for his family while earnestly seeking to live a God-honoring life. The CEO who is trying to be a person of faith in a culture of the bottom line. They’re normal people, but the outcome of their lives is anything but normal.

Who are apostles? We are.

Christmas did not begin on the night when God broke into time and wrapped Himself in flesh. The plan to redeem humanity began long before, when a bite from some forbidden fruit severed the perfect relationship between Creator and creation. But darkness did not get the final word that day.

God’s desire to be with us overcame our instinct to run and hide. He has never been one to leave us fumbling around in total darkness. So the light that was the light of men came into the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it.

Just as God illuminated the world when He said, “Let there be light,” he also illuminated the darkness in our lives when He sent Jesus. Because of Him, comfort and peace now replace anxiety. Hope replaces despair. Light replaces darkness. Christmas is God’s personal invitation to all of humanity to come to Him and embrace His Light…

Bread from Heaven. A serpent of bronze. Water from the rock.

What do they have in common? They were God’s provisions to an ungrateful people during their journey in the desert. Even when the Israelites were ready to give up on their commitment to God, the Lord never wavered in His commitment to His chosen ones. God met the people’s needs even when those same people were longing for the “good old days” when they had been slaves in Egypt.

What about you? As we enter this new year, do you find yourself reminiscing about the way things used to be – even if those things weren’t God’s best for you? Like the Israelites, God has freed us from slavery. We were a people enslaved to our sins. Because of this, we are to be committed to the people God has given us to love, to God’s kingdom, and, ultimately, to God Himself. What makes this all possible, even in hard times, is God’s real and true commitment to us. As a people, we are called to take the good with the bad. Or, as in the story about to unfold over the next three weeks, The Good with the Badlands.

Throughout history, God has called His people to do three things: Surrender. Pray. Obey. From Abraham to Moses, to Jesus Himself, God’s kingdom has been ushered in through people who are willing to sacrifice their own comfort for the sake of others. Our obedience matters more than we may think it does.

Second Stories is all about increasing Summit’s capacity to reach, serve, and love people by creating space in our community. Over the last nine years God has done amazing things through this community, but there are still more stories to be written. Stories of redemption. Stories of grace. Stories of love.

At the end of the day—at the end of all our days—what we do for Jesus and others matters more than anything else. We can trust God to be faithful. He is not done writing our story.

Jesus wasn’t an innocent bystander during His trial. He was innocent of sin, to be sure, but He chose to embrace the cross rather than prove that innocence.

The greatest scandal of all time isn’t just that one innocent man died a brutal death so that we could be forgiven of our sins. It’s that He did so willingly, because He knew that doing so was the only way to save us. The guilty get set free. The innocent One takes on their sentence.

The trial of Jesus Christ is the most important trial in all of human history. No one can afford to sit it out. We must all look at the evidence and weigh in. It’s time to begin Retrying Jesus.

Service isn’t meant to make us feel good, though it often does. It is not a way to make God love us more. It is a humble offering in recognition of our mutual need for Jesus. We serve because Jesus served first. Deeds of service are acts of worship, active worship—mirroring Christ, who donned a towel to wash even the feet that would run to betray him.

What would it look like to imitate Jesus? What if our deeds were not done out of obligation, but out of love and gratitude? What would it look like to serve others, not just to feel good, but to cultivate goodness within?

Love is the mirror that reflects the image of God, and this must be love in deed.

Jesus once told the story of a farmer who planted seeds. Some seeds fell along the path, some fell on shallow soil, and others fell among the thorns and weeds. None of these seeds could take root and grow, and they withered away long before they reached their full potential. Some seeds, however, found their way to rich and fertile soil and not only grew, but thrived.

It is the simplest of stories. Jesus was not talking about ordinary seeds or soil. We all receive an invitation to live our lives in the light of God’s goodness and mercy. But what we choose to do with that invitation—with that seed—is up to us. We can plant it deep within our hearts and let it produce an abundant harvest. Or we can let it wither away, neglected and uncared for.

On the surface, it’s the tale of a man with a dream. When we dig a little deeper into the narrative of Nehemiah, we find there’s so much more to it than just a story of a man trying to build a wall (though it is a really good story). It’s God speaking to us through history, offering valuable instruction on how to prevail over the obstacles that will inevitably attempt to block our paths and deter us from achieving the goals set before us.

How do we overcome the walls that keep us from getting to where we should be? How do we find the strength to persevere through life’s most formidable challenges? It all begins with a prayer.

The problem originated in the Garden, and it started with the most destructive of lies: God doesn’t really love you. You’re not good enough. You’re not worth knowing. The lie crept into minds and hearts.

When we believe the lie, the effect is crippling. In our best efforts to conceal the worst parts of ourselves, we hide. We hide from ourselves, from others, and from God. The trouble with hiding, though, is that it doesn’t work. God, in His infinite love and grace, is not so willing to let us go. In fact, He never stops seeking us, even in the darkest of places.

What if we were to step into the light and discover the freedom that comes from knowing God, being known by God, knowing yourself, and being known by others?

Most remarkable about these gatherings wasn’t the food, or the entertainment, or the lighting. It was whom Jesus chose to keep company with: Crooks. Prostitutes. Riffraff. The broken as well as the prideful.

Why these people? Because they mattered to Him. They were not lost causes. Their lives had purpose and meaning. And Jesus knew that before He could invite them to God’s table, He needed to first sit at theirs.

Because relationships are born at the table.

Jonah & the Big Fish. It’s one of the most famous tales of all time. It’s not simply a book about a man who ran from God and the fish who swallowed him whole. At the heart of the story is a lesson about God’s never-ending grace and the lengths He’ll go to show it. As Jonah sat in the belly of that great fish—finally realizing how low he’d sunk—God chose to rescue him. But along with that rescue came a call: a call for Jonah to rediscover who God is and to turn his heart toward those far from Him. God used Jonah to save a city. And God used a city to save Jonah.

Through Jonah’s story, we learn that when God calls us, it is always for the sake of others. We’ve been invited to play a role in the redemption of those far from God. And through that journey, God continually redeems us as well.

Over the next four weeks, we’ll embark on an adventure with Jonah, a big fish, and an even bigger God who fights for the redemption of all His people.

Why is it so hard for us to trust God with everything we have—when all we have comes from Him to begin with? Maybe we’re not content with the status quo, or maybe we’re afraid that He won’t really meet our needs. The truth is, the way we handle our finances and possessions says a lot about our hearts and the way we view God.

Money and possessions are the second-most referenced topic in the Bible, and for good reason. In this uncertain world, money—what it can do, or what we wish it could do—is God’s number one competition for the affection of our hearts. God certainly doesn’t need our money, but He does want our hearts. And when we learn to care about what God cares about, giving of ourselves for the sake of others, our hearts can’t help but draw near to His.

How do we become people who reflect the generosity of our magnanimous God? How do we ensure that our money, our possessions, our hearts, and our time are Well Spent?

Peace. Why is it so hard to come by? Or is the problem that we tend to look for it in the wrong places?

In his letter to the Philippians, Paul writes of peace that surpasses all understanding—a peace that covers deep and wide, putting our hearts at ease and replacing worry with confidence.

Perhaps this peace isn’t as mysterious as we think it is. As we learn through God’s Word how to live, put that knowledge into practice, and work together to share His love with a world in need, we can rejoice in the truth that real contentment—the deep-down peace God promises to those who follow Him—comes from relying on His strength alone.

Could it really be that simple?

Thinking and doing. Most of us tend more toward one of these things. In week 3 of Keeping the Peace, Jim Keller encouraged us to engage in both. He said we must think before doing, but we also must not do without thinking. As we continue this week through Philippians 4, we learn that adopting this attitude actually helps in our pursuit of God’s peace. Paul in this passage tells us how to focus our minds and direct our actions so that the peace of God may be with us wherever we go.

In the final week of Keeping the Peace, Jim explored Paul’s words about contentment in Philippians 4:10-13. We learned that contentment is not something we superficially impose upon our current circumstances, but rather something that comes over time. First, we must learn contentment. It takes time. Then, we must choose contentment independent of our circumstances. Paul used what he had learned and chose to be content both in times of plenty and in times of want. Finally—and thankfully—we see that we are not intended to do this with our own power. As verse 13 famously declares, “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” The peace of God is found in the strength of God.

This week, Zach Van Dyke began a new series, The Answer in Question. What we think about something affects the way we interact with it. This is also true of our interactions with people, including Jesus. Throughout the New Testament, a variety of people ask things of Jesus, and each interaction reflects the questioner’s background, experiences, and wonderings. In Jesus’ responses, He implies, “Who am I to you?” For many of us, whether we consider ourselves Christ-followers or not, this is a difficult question to answer. In this passage from the Gospel of John, Pilate’s questions mask his cynicism and disinterest, but Jesus is not content to give the answer he wants to hear. Instead, each of Jesus’ responses aim at Pilate’s heart. Listen in as Zach reminds us that when Jesus answers, He is asking something of those who question Him.

In week 2 of The Answer in Question, Zach Van Dyke examines another story from Scripture in which a man comes to Jesus with a question. This man was young, rich, and powerful, and everything we know about him implies that he was giving his life to a pursuit of goodness. He wanted to know, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” In effect, he was asking, “Am I good enough to earn that reward?” Jesus’ answer was not what the young man expected to hear. Our salvation is not deserved because we are good—it is gifted to us because of God’s great love. Unless we see our salvation as beating impossible odds, we have not truly seen our salvation.

We all have a proclivity toward sin, and simply wanting to be better won’t help us. We often try to guilt ourselves and one another into not sinning, but that is not how Jesus operates. In the third week of The Answer in Question series, Zach Van Dyke discusses the account from John 8, when the religious leaders of the time brought a woman before Jesus. She had been caught in the act of adultery, and they wanted to trap Jesus in a spiritual debate. They presented Him with the facts and asked, “So what do you say?” Jesus responded with grace, refusing to shame the woman or her accusers, and He responds to us the same way. Grace meets us where we are, but it does not leave us where it found us.

Everywhere we look, we see pain and suffering. We see it clearly in our world, our communities, our families, and in ourselves. That pain is both unpleasant and overwhelming, and as followers of Christ, we sometimes try to distance ourselves from it by asking theological questions. In week 4 of The Answer in Question, Zach Van Dyke talks about this very reaction from the disciples in the account of Jesus’ interaction with the blind man. Jesus was not afraid to get messy in order to redeem this blind man’s pain. In the process of healing the man’s sight, He also healed the disciples’ judgmental and disengaged hearts. The problem of pain cannot be solved from a distance.

He asked Jesus, “Are you the One who is to come, or shall we look for another?” In this moment, we saw John going back to the question we’ve been asking Jesus throughout this series: “Are You really who You say You are?" All the other questions ultimately lead us back to this one, and the answer can change your life.

Even after His resurrection, the scars still appear on Jesus’ hands and feet. As we celebrate the risen Christ this Easter, the significance of what Jesus did for us on the cross is revealed through the story of Thomas seeing and touching Jesus’ scars. These scars are powerful for us because they show that Jesus defeated death through the resurrection. Without the resurrection, the scars wouldn’t bear the same weight. Each one of us has scars, physical and emotional, and each scar tells a story. Whether we are like Thomas, disappointed, uncertain, lacking faith, or praising Jesus, we are invited to worship the resurrected Christ, our Lord. By his scars, we are healed.

Prayer is a privilege because it brings us into the presence of God. In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus taught the disciples (and us) how to pray more so than what to pray. Through prayer we learn about the character and nature of God, even as we are addressing Him. We have a Father who is holy, who has authority over everything, and whose will is good and just. In this time spent with our Father, we receive the rich understanding that, in Christ, all is well. This week, allow yourself to move a little closer to God the Father, and rest in the comfort of His presence.

We are all sinners. We are in debt to God and God alone. In order to fully appreciate the gift of God’s grace, as we pray we are encouraged to take a moral inventory and name the sins that we are bringing to God. This step can be painful, but in doing so we feel the weight of our debts and can more fully experience the freedom that God grants us in canceling them. Our salvation doesn’t depend on forgiving others. But the willingness to forgive others is a telltale sign that we have truly received grace and mercy—and forgiveness—from our loving Father.

Most of us would agree that we want an exciting adventure for our lives. We often fail to see that the story of God’s salvation of humanity is the greatest adventure of our lives. In order to fully live this adventure, we often encounter trials and tests that teach and shape us. Our response is often to attempt to bypass or take shortcuts around these trials. By praying, “Do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil,” we are asking God not to lead us into a situation that will overwhelm us. Avoiding the trials of life means we miss the opportunity to be delivered from them by our Father who provides for us, forgives us, and loves us.

Throughout our lives, especially in times of suffering, pain, or confusion, each of us will ask the question, “Is it worth it?” During those times, we are tempted to focus on our circumstances, and to let those circumstances inform our opinion of God. However, circumstantial faith is fragile. Our perception is often incorrect, we don’t always know what God is up to, and our timeline is often different than His. On the other hand, we are filled with hope when we view our circumstances in light of God’s character, and we can then be part of God’s redemptive work by sharing that hope with others.

Have you ever wondered why the Holy Spirit seems to fly right out the window when someone cuts you off in traffic, and you spill hot coffee all over your lap? Then, after a few choice expletives have erupted, the guilt creeps in—and we find ourselves trying extra hard the rest of the day to invite Him back into the car.

We sometimes forget that the Spirit that indwells us is actually a free gift of God—we were never good enough to trick him into our passenger seat. We expend a lot of effort trying to make true in our lives what really already is true. Because of God’s grace, we never have to wonder if we’re doing enough to keep the Spirit with us. We never did enough to get Him there to begin with.

But that’s not the end of the story. What if the Spirit (we’ve done nothing for) makes it possible for us to do more than we ever imagined we could? Not to earn our place in God’s kingdom, but to invite other’s into that place which is already our home? Join us for a 2-week series starting May 29th, as Guest Teacher Steve Brown explores what it means to live life with the Spirit.

In this week’s sermon, guest teacher Steve Brown taught us to recognize the good work the Holy Spirit is doing in our lives. The Holy Spirit can be a challenging subject to discuss, because the Sprit’s role is in the background. We know from Scripture, however, that the Spirit is a Person, not an “it”. The Spirit is in fact the 3rd Person of the Holy Trinity. Maybe most significantly of all, we know the Spirit is living and active – He does stuff.

David was a man after God’s own heart. He was also a man who performed treacherous acts that shattered his life to pieces. When David was confronted with his own brokenness—his own humanness—he did the only thing he knew to do: He poured out his heart to God in repentance.

In Psalm 51, we get an inside look at David’s confession to God. As David strips away pretense and gets real with his Creator, we begin to see repentance in a whole new light. From David, we learn that repentance is not a duty to be done begrudgingly, but rather a joyful privilege that can transform us more into the image of Christ.

What if confessing our brokenness led us to a better understanding of God’s steadfast love and abundant mercy? What if recognizing our neediness moved us toward a deeper appreciation of the Gospel? What if we became a community of “repenters”?

In this new sermon series, we will examine David’s song of repentance in Psalm 51. We begin by examining the sin in David’s heart that led to disaster, as recounted in 2 Samuel 11-12. When we, like David, lose sight of God’s vision for our lives, we are more likely to succumb to sin, and over time we become numb to it’s presence in our lives. In those circumstances, the context for change is often Christ-centered relationships. For David, God provided the prophet Nathan. Who might He have provided for you? Lasting change in our lives cannot happen with continual repentance, and repentance reminds us of the hope Christ offers. When we remember God’s grace, like David did, we can’t help but sing.
