Enjoy some live music at Music in the Park here in Lee's Summit

Oh the fun is just getting started with all of the Lee’s Summit events happening this Summer! Music in the Park is back every Friday night from Memorial Day to Labor Day weekend.The music kicks off each Friday evening at 6:30 pm at Howard Station Park. Concerts typically wind down about 10 pm. So pack a picnic and bring a blanket or some lawn chairs and chill out to the sounds of a variety of bands as the week winds down.

The FIRST Friday Music in the Park on May 25 is Kids’ Night. Enjoy the sounds of The Jack Snaps from 6:15-7pm, Rockin Rob from 7:15-8pm, and Tudon Boys from 8:30-10pm.

On June 1, join the community in kicking off a hot, fun summer at Downtown Days Streets Alive on Friday through Sunday, June 1-3, 2012.

Then it’s back to the normal Friday evening schedule on June 8 with Larry Garrett playing his folk/rock sound and Lezlie Revelle with her unique folk/Celtic music.

The spectacular Kauffman Center in Kansas City, Mo.

The spectacular Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts is the jewel of the Kansas City skyline, the schedule is filling up and the only thing missing is you. Take a tour, attend an event, but make the 25-minute drive from Summit Ridge.

Aretha Franklin
Need a good reason to visit? Aretha Franklin will entertain at 7:30 p.m., May 9 in the Muriel Kauffman Theater. Aretha Franklin’s career spans more than 40 years where she established herself as a giant of American soul.

The Building
The Kauffman Center started as a sketch on a napkin, now it is an architectural icon and home for the performing arts in Kansas City. The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts has changed Kansas City’s skyline, as well as the experiences of artists and audiences throughout the region.

You can take advantage of free, guided public  tours of The Kauffman Center. Visitors to the Center will see its architectural accomplishments and its historic overview.

Have the folks a Custard’s Last Stand mix up your concrete.

The warmer weather has the residents of Summit Ridge thinking about ice cream. Downtown Lee’s Summit is home to some great places less than three miles away.

Poppy’s Ice Cream

This isn’t some bucket from the grocery store. Poppy’s make every micro-batch in the store. The standard flavors are chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, mint chip, cookie dough, cake batter and gianduja, but the list goes on and on. If non-dairy is your thing, try the numerous sorbet flavors.

Custard’s Last Stand

Custard stands have popped up all over the Kansas City area, but one of the originals was Custard’s Last Stand, which opened its doors in 1989. The super friendly employees will mix up a gravity-defying concrete for you. What in the world is a gravity-defying concrete? You pick the incredibly thick, rich custard, mix in toppings, what your creation come together and then turn the cup upside down. Nothing comes out. It’s that thick.

Cool down and enjoy some fantastic and unique ice cream right in your neighborhood.

The Titanic exhibit is now open at Kansas City’s Union Station.

On April 15, 1912, Titanic, the world’s largest ship, sank after colliding with an iceberg, claiming more than 1,500 lives and shaking the world’s confidence in the infallibility of modern technology. Almost 100 years later, Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, which showcases more than 300 artifacts retrieved from Titanic’s debris field, arrives and it’s only about 20 minutes from your home at Summit Ridge.

This exhibition is open at Kansas City’s Union Station until September 3 and it promises real artifacts and stories of the ship’s fateful journey. This is an educational and emotional experience, but it is appropriate for all ages.

To learn more and plan your visit, go to titanic.unionstation.org. Adult tickets are $19.12, kids and seniors are available for $16.12. Kansas City’s Union Station is always a great family activity.

When your trip to Union Station is over, take advantage of some of the best shopping and dining in Kansas City right next door at Crown Center. Even if the weather is bad, enclosed walkways connect Union Station to all the surrounding shops.

Have a margarita at the Cinco de Cabot event this year to help raise money and awareness for the Cabot Westside Medical Center.

The Cinco de Cabot benefit concert in Lee’s Summit supports Cabot Westside Medical and Dental Center, a community clinic that is part of the not-for-profit Saint Luke’s Health System. The event takes place downtown at KC Live! in the Power and Light District. You can get there with a 25-minute drive from Summit Ridge Apartments.

On Friday, May 4, Sister Hazel performs at 8 p.m. But the Cinco de Cabot fun starts before that.

With the purchase of a $100 patron ticket you can enjoy an exclusive VIP pre-party beginning at 6 p.m. with complimentary hors d’oeuvres and an open bar. The Roasterie and Clear10 Vodka companies will show off their new espresso-flavored vodka, Dizzy Three, with proceeds from signature martinis also benefitting Cabot Westside Medical and Dental Center.

On Saturday, March 24^th, the Lee’s Summit Branch Library held an exciting event for teens, centered around a popular Young Adult book series and recent film. If your teen is a fan of The Hunger Games, they’ll love Hunger Games Havoc!

Structured around the plot of the popular books, teens can team up with other fans of The Hunger Games series and compete in various challenges of wits, creativity, and skill that capture the spirit of their favorite books. The Lee’s Summit Library has set up a  great atmosphere of friendly and exciting competition challenges young people to work together and think in creative and unusual ways in order to triumph, all while encouraging a passion for reading and imagination.

We are hosting our second straight Egg Hunt here at Summit Ridge and, this year, Community Life plans on bringing the same success! Join us for our Easter Eggstravaganza Saturday, April 7 from 2-4pm.  We’ll have door prizes, a bounce house, hotdogs, popcorn, and a visit from the Lee’s Summit Fire Department, and tons of eggs!

Everyone of all ages is encouraged to come out and enjoy all the things we’ve worked hard to plan! Though the egg hunt is reserved for the kids, parents and grown up have some great games that can do, to feel like their inner-child again….

Designer Diaries: Patio Inspiration

Recently, we brought you our first installment of Designer Diaries, where we spoke with Home Depot Director of Trends & Design Sarah Fishburne about her design process. Today, Sarah tells us where she found inspiration for Patio 2012:

Above all, our design team is inspired by color, but you would be surprised where some of that patio inspiration comes from!

Every fall, our team heads to Paris for the Maison&Objet trade show. We gather ideas, follow trends, and make note of new and interesting color combinations.

These fabric samples were used to create the Arden Nazir Larkspur throw pillows, fabric by the yard, and the Arden Nazir Larkspur bench cushion.

Fabrics are also an essential inspiration to our design team – some of our patio collections’ fabrics were inspired by rugs. Or perhaps a fabric inspires a glass mosaic pattern. Our design team is constantly reinterpreting inspiration for new and exciting projects.

These two fabric samples became the Poolside Casablanca Malibu Blue Geometric Pillow and the Poolside Dawson Stripe Blue Stripe Pillow.

The Maison&Objet trade show in Paris is always a huge source of inspiration, as is Paris in general. I find inspiration just walking along the Seine, maybe the color and patina of a copper pipe fitting on a beautiful old building, the color of the Seine River, or the fashion in a window display. All sorts of things will catch my eye, and I’ll use it in some way in our next collection. That’s the funny thing about inspiration, you really never know where it will come from next.

In the case of the Martha Stewart Dana Point Collection which was available from 2008 to 2010, our design team used a metallic pewter faucet finish as their inspiration – giving vendors the faucet and asking them to match it exactly.

Like I said, you really never know where inspiration will come from — in this case, a simple bath faucet inspired the finish of an entire patio collection!
