Things don't always go to plan. 2 songs into this set, my USB drive died, and it wouldn't load 90% songs that I tried. My sets aren't pre-planned, but this one still veered off in a different direction than I had expected while I fought to keep the music going. Huge thanks to the ACFI A/V crew for retrieving my backup drive just as I fully lost the ability to load anything.

This month, I was in a wild mood to just record a long mix that included all the kinds of music I like to play, from downtempo to progressive house to various styles of trance. I didn't have a target length in mind, I just gathered songs that went well together and went for it. It was a fun challenge trying to juggle the crazy BPM swings without breaking up the flow, and to that end, I think it was a success. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it.

Frontiers #49 - July 2024

The initial premise behind Frontiers was to make DJ mixes that were more than just a weekly/monthly showcase of the latest music - I wanted to make something people (including myself) could enjoy listening to again and again. While the formula for that has undergone revisions and iterations over the last 49 episodes, the underlying principle hasn't.

For this month's episode, I wanted to experiment a little. Rather than have one downtempo track, why not have...four? Instead of starting at 120bpm, why not start around 100? Variety keeps things interesting, and this was a REALLY fun challenge for me to put together that I think serves as a pleasant deviation to listen to from my norm as well.

2023 continues being chaotic for me into April...which is why I'm once again a week late on this Frontiers episode. That said, the extra time gave me a chance to try out some new techniques in the mix, so there are more cuts, more effects, and an even smoother intro and outro than normal. Happy new year! We've made it to 2022, and with the new year comes a new episode of Frontiers. I have some big plans for the year, and first and foremost is...this mix! My aim going forward is to make a new, original downtempo intro song for every future Frontiers episode, starting with this one. Time will tell if I can succeed with this ambitious goal, but it'll be a fun challenge regardless.

This is one of my smoothest and most flowing mixes yet, with some sublime melodic music for the first half and some great driving rhythms for the second half. As usual, there's a few choice new tracks, and a couple selections from years prior too.

I love when a mix comes together like this. Sometimes putting together these Frontier mixes is a real struggle in finding tracks that mesh well together. Every now and then, though, I get really lucky, and it feels like it flows right out with hardly any effort required. This episode is one of the latter.

The November 2021 edition of Frontiers is a lovely trek that starts with some deep progressive music and gradually builds into solid trance. There's plenty of great new tunes and a few choice older ones as well.

There's some absolutely sublime progressive tracks in this mix, and in my opinion some of the best transitions I've pulled off. The mix itself seems to be split pretty evenly into 3 sections: more traditional progressive house, darker stuff, then finally some light, airy, pleasant music to tie things off.

This one's a bit more traditional progressive house all the way through. The first half is relaxing and melodic as usual, while the second half gets some nice, rhythmic grooves going. It's a treat all the way through (not that I'm biased or anything).

The first half of this August mix is again one of my favorite runs. Every transition is perfectly seamless and the songs all go together perfectly, as if they were made for each other.

This one in particular features some intense progressive house and techno in parts of it, even if it never breaks past 128bpm. It's a pretty fun exercise getting the more relaxed side of "progressive" music to coexist and interweave with the more energetic stuff, and I really feel that I'm starting to refine and nail down the sort of "sound" that I'm going for.

Frontiers #1 - December 2019

It's been a while since I've uploaded anything to this podcast, eh?

The truth of the matter is that I ended up getting pretty burned out with music by the end of things. What I had initially planned on being a break of a month or two turned into a hiatus of a few years - not just from a podcast/mix standpoint, but with my original music as well. Quite honestly, I'm still trying to recover in the latter area.

Around the end of 2019, I started experimenting with recording "progressive" mixes along the lines of what you might hear from record labels like Anjunadeep and Colorize, and I discovered that I had a great love for this kind of music. As the COVID-19 pandemic progressed, I recorded them more regularly, and though they haven't always been perfect, I've refined their sound enough to the point that I'm comfortable sharing them.

Over the coming weeks, I'll be uploading some of my favorites from the past few months onto this podcast, and I'll be sure to keep it updated with the new releases beyond that.

Instead of starting out at both a high energy level and high BPM, this episode starts at just a high BPM but lower energy, with a progressive build until the predictably-crazy ending. I was reminiscing last night about the road trip I made to the Canadian arctic last summer. There is nothing in my life thus far which compares to the sheer amount of awe I felt on my journey for this planet on which we live. I spoke last week about the raw brutality hidden behind the beauty, and I think that plays a big part in the wonder of it all - some of the most amazing places I saw were also some of the most inhospitable places on the planet. In all seriousness, this episode of Summit Sessions features some pretty intense techno and tech trance, even if it doesn't hit the "138" range of music. It turns out there's plenty of mental songs down in the high 120s and low 130s.

What's this? It's a new mix! But it's not Summit Sessions? Nope! Why?

"Panorama" is my weekly radio show on KCSU Fort Collins (a radio station in northern Colorado). The hardware that I use to record Summit Sessions is currently out of commission - and has been since January, unfortunately - and what I use for Panorama is far too unwieldy and large to use in my apartment, which is why Summit Sessions has been on hiatus. However, now that Panorama has started up, I figured that I'd record it and share it with all of you. Don't worry, this isn't replacing Summit Sessions! It's just a temporary thing that will last until December.

Panorama differs from Summit Sessions in a couple very distinct ways - every episode is two hours long, and every episode starts out slow before ending up nice and fast. It's where I show off my ability to DJ more than just trance music. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it!

This particular mix - number 60 - displays this quite well. Like most of my two-hour mixes, this one starts off reasonably slow and relaxed, though finishes quite the opposite. Of course, there's a smooth progression along the way.

As I'm sure you know by now, Summit Sessions is my weekly mixtape podcast through iTunes, YouTube, and Mixcloud. It's usually an hour of trance music, reaching insane levels of energy by the end. However, I also have a two-hour weekly radio show on a Fort Collins radio station called Panorama. This week, I had my set recorded - without all the voiceovers and other stuff the radio station requires - and decided to give it to you.

Panorama is different from Summit Sessions in that it is predominantly a house mix; trance doesn't come in until the very end, and this week I didn't get up to 138bpm until the very last song. The show is more meant to be as a warm-up to parties - after all, it is at 9-11pm on a Saturday - rather than the climax of one. I hope you all enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it!

Summit Sessions #48 - Go Your Own Way

We're back! After a month of not having a place to call home, I'm set up in a new apartment, which means I can return to making this every week.

However, this is not your usual Summit Sessions episode. For instance, it's more of a house mix than a trance mix - the first trance song doesn't even play until nearly an hour and a half in. The BPM never rises above 133. Instead of just uplifting, tech, and progressive trance, we have deep house, tech house, techno, progressive house, breaks, progressive trance, and slower tech trance. Sound fun?

Why have I done this? Summit Sessions was never designed to be a traditional DJ radio show. The point from the very beginning was that it would be a place for me to experiment and develop as a DJ. That's why, instead of being pieced together by hand in Ableton Live or some other DAW like most radio shows, it's recorded as a live DJ set through Traktor. The only processing it gets is a limiter to bring the volume up.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this diversion from trance music just as much as I enjoyed recording it.

Nostalgia is a powerful force. While I predominantly DJ trance now (aside from the occasional techno/deep house/progressive house set), I originally started out with progressive house along the lines of "In My Mind" by Ivan Gough & Feenixpawl. Occasionally, I like going back to my roots, so to speak. As a result, this week's episode starts out with some of that more energetic progressive house - albeit more modern examples of it than the aforementioned song - before moving onto that high-energy uplifting- and tech-trance sound that you've all come to know and love from me.

Summit Sessions #46 - Stay Up All Night

When it came to recording this episode, number 46, I couldn't help but make it extended length. This was partly because I felt like I had to make up for missing last week due to a much-needed vacation, and also partly just because I particularly enjoy doing two hour episodes. As a result, this week is a lovely two-hour mix, staying nice and dark the whole time and getting quite energetic towards the end. Of course, you should expect nothing less by now.

Today is a very special day for all of you regular listeners of Summit Sessions.

My (much-needed) vacation is over, and my way of apologizing for not delivering an episode to you while I was gone is to give you two at once, one soothing and melodic while the other is...quite the opposite of that, really. This one, episode 42, is the latter. It's a full hour of raging tech trance designed for the sole purpose of going nuts. The BPM never once goes lower than 138, and the mix even makes it up to 142bpm at one point. How's that for fun?

Summit Sessions #40 - Breathe Me In

40 is one of those numbers that is divisible by 10, which means it's time for another two-hour set! Granted, the last ten have featured episodes varying in length from one-to-three hours, but that doesn't mean we can't have fun with this one. There's a ton of dark and scary music in here, which I think makes it shape up into a rather powerful mix, one that I hope has the same effect on you as it has on myself - that is, makes you get lost in it. It may even be a prime example of a subtle change in style through which I am going, a more darker sound which seems to pervade everything I touch with dance music now.

When I sat down to record this episode of Summit Sessions, I decided to start with some nice, relaxing progressive trance. However, the mix quickly evolved into some rather hard sounds, moving through electro trance and eventually onto tech trance. There's a ridiculous amount of energy in this one, something I'm sure those of you who like fist-pumping will certainly enjoy.

Summit Sessions #34 - I See You

When it came time to record this episode, I approached it differently than the others. Rather than limiting it to one minute with a linear energy progression, I instead decided to go completely where the music took me. As a result, it's one hour and 34 minutes long, and features several energy buildups before dropping down again, each one reaching higher than the last, until finally it reaches its peak at the end. It's a unique mix among the Summit Sessions podcasts, and I'm quite satisfied with it.

Unfortunately, no voiceovers in this one - time was a limited commodity this past week. However, that just means you can focus more on the music.
