Kenworthy, who earned 96.0 points, is joined on the podium by Indiana native Nick Goepper, last year’s winner who took second place this year with 94.0 points, and Joss Christensen of Park City, Utah, who took third place with 90.7 points.

Kenworthy walks away with $12,000 in cash, second place wins $5,250, and third place, $3,500.

Newry, ME (March 5, 2012)—Sunday River, Sugarloaf, and Loon Mountain announced pricing today for the popular New England Pass and the College New England Pass, good for skiing and riding at all three resorts during the 2012/2013 season. This sales period offers skiers and snowboarders the chance to purchase next year’s passes at their absolute lowest rates.

Next year’s season pass products, which will be available for purchase online and at each resort on March 15, includes a payment plan for guests who purchase their passes by the April 30 deadline.

With the payment plan, guests can pay just $50 at the time of purchase to lock in the spring sale pricing, and then complete the purchase in four equal, automatic installments on June 1, July 1, August, 1, and September 1. The payment plan option is available for phone, mail, or in-person purchases only, through April 30.

With prices starting at $379 for access to a combined total of 346 trails; 2,168 acres; 14 terrain parks; and 6 halfpipes; all served by 42 lifts, the New England Pass is the best value in the Northeast for skiers and snowboarders.

The Dumont Cup has quickly gained a reputation for being one of the World’s most prestigious slopestyle contests.  It will be featured in the nationally televised Red Bull Signature Series on the NBC Sports Network on April 10, 2012 from 12:30-1:30AM EST as well as internationally through Dumont Cup event sponsor, Red Bull.  http://www.redbullsignatureseries.com

This year, the Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) officially recognized the Dumont Cup’s importance by elevating it from a gold status event to a platinum status event. This is the AFP’s first strictly slopestyle contest to receive such a promotion and will allow amateur and professional freeskiers the ability to compete at the highest level possible. 

Created to highlight New England’s best skiers, the Dumont Cup has drawn competitors from as far away as Europe and all throughout Canada. In the last two years alone, former amateurs Alex Schlopy and Nick Goepper took home the coveted Dumont Cup using it as a launching pad for their current high profile professional careers. 

Past professional freeskiers who have competed in the Dumont Cup alongside Simon Dumont include: Tom Wallisch, Gus Kenworthy, Peter Olenick, and Jossi Wells.

 “The Dumont Cup has exceeded all of my expectations,” says Dumont. “It’s incredible that in the last four years this went from a contest we started to help skiers from New England get noticed to becoming the first slopestyle contest to get elevated to platinum by the AFP.  I’m honored that the ski community would embrace this event so much.”

During the semi-finals and finals, professional and amateur skiers compete side-by-side. Judges determine the top three overall winners as well as a stand-out amateur from the two-day competition.

Newry, ME (January 11, 2012)—Sunday River and Sugarloaf resorts will host their 4th annual Downtown Showdown rail jam event in Portland, Maine’s Monument Square on Friday, February 3, 2012 from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m.

One of the few urban rail jams in the country, the resorts partner with the City of Portland to bring the mountains of Maine to the metropolitan streets in the form of a five-story, snow-covered rail and staircase feature.

For this invitation-only event, 30 of the region’s best skiers and snowboarders will be invited by Sunday River and Sugarloaf to compete and showcase their skills.

Free to watch, last year’s rail jam drew in thousands of spectators who gathered around the manmade mountain to watch as athletes competed for more than $4k in cash and prizes. This year’s prize purse will be valued the same.

Winners in last year’s ski category included first place finisher Dan Jones, followed by second place finisher Jeremie Vielleux from Carrabassett Valley Academy (also the 2010 ski champion), and Andy Blanchard from Sunday River in third place.

In the snowboard category, Michael Ravelson from Loon Mountain took first place, followed by second place finisher Jack Alosa from Gould Academy, and third place finisher Sean Kaulbach.

Newry, Maine (December 8, 2011)—Sunday River Resort is gearing up to celebrate its second annual Winterfest Weekend on December 17 and 18 with fireworks, fire dancers, live music, Santa Claus, Zipline Tours, special rates on snowboard rentals, a winter-themed dinner, and lodging packages with low rates starting at $79 per person. Winterfest Weekend also marks the beginning of 12-Hour Skiing and Riding at the resort.

Newry, Maine (November 28, 2011)—For the 12th year in a row, Sunday River Resort is inviting 250 pre-registered skiers and snowboarders to hit the slopes in full Santa attire to celebrate Santa Sunday on December 4, 2011. This annual event raises money for the Bethel Rotary Club’s Annual Holiday Toy Drive.

Registration began  at noon today on Sunday River’s website and the 250 available spaces filled within 8 minutes.

“This is a hugely popular event,” Dana Bullen, Resort President for Sunday River, says. “It’s visually stunning to watch all those Santas skiing and snowboarding down the mountain and it puts everyone in the holiday spirit.”

Santa Sunday participants will check in between 7:30 - 10:30 a.m. in the South Ridge Base Lodge and then participate in the 11 a.m. photo shoot. Participants will receive one free lift ticket to use for the rest of the day, in addition to another free lift ticket to use anytime through Friday, December 16, 2011.

Santa Sunday participants must arrive to the event wearing all of the following items: one red Santa hat including a white pompom, one red Santa jacket, one pair of red Santa pants, a Santa beard, and a $10 (or more) cash donation for the Bethel Rotary Club's Annual Holiday Toy Drive.

Newry, Maine (November 14, 2011)—Sunday River Ski Resort is hosting its annual Tin Mountain Round Up this weekend, November 19–20, 2011. Skiers and snowboarders who arrive with three or more items of nonperishable food to benefit the local Andover Food Bank annual drive will receive $10 off of a lift ticket.

Tin Mountain Roundup is part of the resort’s corporate initiative to give back to the community through in-kind giving, food drives, and events that raise money for such programs as the Bethel Rotary Club’s Toy for Tots, Maine Handicapped Skiing, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation as well as Sunday River’s Regional Charitable Fund.

Newry, Maine (November 8, 2011)—In celebration of Veterans Day, Sunday River will offer a free adult lift ticket to all military personnel and their dependents, active and retired, with proper identification.

Resort President and General Manager Dana Bullen made the announcement today saying, "Sunday River is honored to offer this free lift ticket as a token of appreciation to our nation's service men and women.”

Forms of accepted identification include a U.S. Uniform Services Identification Card, U.S. Uniform Services Retired Identification Card, Current Leave and Earnings Statement (LES), a photograph in uniform, arrival to lift ticket window wearing an authentic uniform, a Veterans Organization Card (American Legion and VFW), or a DD Form 214.

Military personnel are defined for this program as active members of the U.S. Navy, Air Force, Army, Marines, Coast Guard, and National Guard

Sunday River plans to reopen its T2 and Upper Sunday Punch trails and Locke Mountain Triple chairlift Thursday, November 10, and will remain open seven days a week.

For non-military personnel, special early season rates are available at just $29, Thursday through Sunday, for a lift ticket. All skier and rider services are out of Barker Base Lodge except for season pass purchases and pickup, which are out of South Ridge Base Lodge.

Newry, Maine (August 17, 2011)—Registration for the 12^th Annual North American Wife Carrying Championship held at the Sunday River Ski Resort in Newry, Maine will open at noon on Thursday, September 1, 2011. Registration is $49 per couple and available online through the event page at www.sundayriver.com.

Registration is almost as competitive as the actual event. Open to only 50 couples, race day is set for Saturday, October 8, 2011 and draws in competitors from all around the United States and Canada and as many as 3,000 spectators.

Winners of the North American Wife Carrying Championship take home the wife’s weight in beer plus five times her weight in cash. As a result, both team members must be 21 years of age or older.

Wife-carrying teams must also be comprised of a male and female competitor. The female does not need to be the legal wife of the male nor does she need to be the one carried.

The wife-carrying course is a regulation 278-yard long sprint built on the lower slopes of Sunday River. The course begins with an uphill run and continues through a field of obstacles including the always crowd-pleasing 10-meter-long waist-deep water hazard fondly referred to as the ‘widow maker’ and a series of 39-inch high log hurdles.

The origin of the North American Wife Carrying Championship stems from Finnish history where men carried women for training and sport. While this concept comes across as slightly uncivilized today, this modernized event is a fun, family-friendly race and a true test of physical strength, agility and teamwork between man and woman.

Registration is limited to 50 teams. Pre-registration is encouraged but on-site registration will be offered if space allows on the day of the event.

Free and open to the public, this 20th anniversary event is expected to draw thousands of spectator fans to its various race points over the course of the two-day race.

As the final round of the RallyCar National Championship Series and prelude to the Summer X Games, the New England Forest Rally attracts the sport’s top competitors including last year’s champion Antoine L’Estage and local 2WD star Chris Duplessis.

Friday morning kicks off with a park expose in front of Sunday River’s South Ridge Lodge providing guests with the opportunity to see each car up close and personal as well as meet the drivers. Shortly after the park expose, the first stage of this off-road race begins at Sunday River before moving to Mexico, Maine for the afternoon. 

For the close of the race, the event comes back to Sunday River on Saturday evening for the awards ceremony in front of South Ridge Lodge and the official race after-party in the Foggy Goggle featuring live entertainment, food and drink.

Newry, Maine (July 5, 2011)—Last year, there was mud, blood and beer. This year, with nearly twice as many obstacles to maneuver through, racers partaking in Sunday River’s second annual Tough Mountain Challenge race can expect even more of a good thing.

Taking place Saturday, July 23, 2011, the Tough Mountain Challenge is an alpine foot race and obstacle course open to the first 1,000 competitors ages 18 and older who sign up. From crawling through mud to running through a battering ram of active snowguns, this five-kilometer race takes participants across the summer slopes of Sunday River while pinning against them 16 of the resort’s best natural and man-made obstacles along the way.

Last year, the course included 12 obstacles. This year, there are 16 obstacles—three of which have two or three surprise features stacked on top of one another for added effect.

Some of the new obstacles being added to this year’s course include the Hornets Nest—a B-Net thigh burner, Burning Man—an area where racers will run over fire, and Gravity Plunge—an obstacle that combines and slip ‘n slide with a man-made pond and a dirt pile exit, all while being soaked with a Boyne Low-Energy Fan Gun.

Registration for the Tough Mountain Challenge is $49 and available through ToughMountain.com. The event is open to racers ages 18 and older. Registration includes entry into the race, a Tough Mountain t-shirt and commemorative mug filled with a celebratory beverage of the competitor’s choice.

Also new this year, Sunday River invites little ones to take on a mini kid-friendly version of the adult course. Duly named the Mini Mountain Challenge, the race is designed for kids ages 4-12 years old and is completely free to participate in.

Newry, Maine (June 30, 2011)—You’ll fly through the air with the greatest of ease, not needing any wings or a single trapeze. And at the end of your tour you’re certain to say, “My, oh, my, what a wonderful day!”

Now open for the summer, Sunday River invites guests to fly through the air on one of its Zipline Tours or Twin Zips.

Installed last summer, Sunday River’s Zipline Tour consists of six lines ranging from 100 to 300 feet in length. New this summer, Twin Zips – also know as parallel zip lines – have been added to the end of each Zipline Tour and allow for participants to zip 750 feet back to the base of the resort side-by-side.

Sunday River’s Zipline Tours are available Thursdays through Sundays, as well as the Fourth of July, Labor Day and Columbus Day holidays, at 9 a.m., 12, p.m., and 3 p.m.

Zipline Tours take approximately two hours to complete and are lead by certified guides who help participants on and off of each line. Zipline Tours cost $49 per person and each ‘zipper’ must be at least three feet tall and weigh between 70 and 270 pounds.

Twin Zips are available to try separate from the tour and are open to the general public Fridays through Sundays from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Cost is $15 for two zips or $20 for two zips and one roundtrip scenic Chondola ride. Twin Zip participants must meet the same Zipline Tour height and weight requirements; reservations are not required.

Reservations for Zipline Tours are also not required but are highly recommended. Additionally, a parental signature is required on Zipline Tour and Twin Zip releases for minors 18 years or younger.

Newry, Maine (March 31, 2011) – Sunday River announced today that, weather permitting, the resort will plan to close for the winter season following the last day of skiing and riding scheduled for Sunday, April 24, 2011.

Boasting New England’s most powerful snowmaking system, Sunday River was the first ski area in the country to open for the 2010/2011 winter season back on October 24, 2010. This April 24, 2011 closing date will mark the resort’s second year in a row of a six-month long operating milestone and the longest ski season on the East Coast.

In addition to nearly 100 days of snowmaking, Sunday River has also received significant natural snowfall. Combined with tomorrow’s expected snowstorm, which is forecasting over a foot of new snow, Sunday River is confident in the announcement of its late April closing date.  

“We’re just as passionate about snow as our guests are, and given how fortunate we’ve been with snowfall and snowmaking weather this season we absolutely want to stay open through late April,” says Dana Bullen, Resort President for Sunday River.

Sunday River is currently open across all eight mountain peaks with 130 trails.

Newry, Maine(March 29, 2011)—Sunday River Resort is gathering all the lost shakers of salt and forming cheeseburgers in paradise in preparation for its annual spring event: Parrot Head Festival! Join thousands of skiers and riders as they descend upon the resort April 1–3, 2011, for Jimmy Buffett-inspired parties, costume contests, a pond-skimming competition, the Bust ’n’ Burn moguls challenge, and more—all thanks to the Parrot Head Club of The Northern Tropics’ efforts to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The 2011 Parrot Head Festival promises to deliver this year with over 20 individual events scheduled all weekend long in and around the White Cap Base Lodge area, the Tempest and White Heat trails, and at the Foggy Goggle in the South Ridge Base Lodge.

The weekend kicks off Friday night with live music by Rog & Ray from 2–5pm at the Foggy Goggle before the official Parrot Head Prime-Up Party at White Cap Base Lodge where Parrot Head favorites Pirate Dreams and the Boat Drunks will play tunes to remind people of life in the tropics. 

Saturday, the action starts with Corona Brothers playing slopeside at White Cap Lodge from 11:30am until 2pm, the Boat Drunks again from 2–4:30pm, and Pirate Dreams from 4:30–7pm. Also, there will be awards for the best costumes at 2pm and the annual Margarita Mix-Off at 3pm.

What’s more, Parrot Heads can party well into Saturday evening with the Calypso Cowboys and Changes in Latitudes at the Foggy Goggle in the South Ridge Base Lodge.

The fun continues Sunday at 11am when Sunday River hosts its annual pond-skimming competition where skiers and riders do their best to make it across a custom-created pond at the bottom of Tempest. At 1pm, more contestants try their luck devouring Key Lime pies from local piemaker Valley View Orchard Pies at the resort’s annual pie-eating contest. Finally, the day’s slopeside entertainment from Changes in Latitude carries on slopeside from noon to 3:30pm.

Saturday and Sunday, the White Heat Trail will be home to the Bust ’n’ Burn moguls challenge where locals and visitors, amateurs and professionals all vie to become Bust ’n’ Burn Champion 2011! It’s a great event for both competitors and spectators alike.

Newry, Maine (March 26, 2011) –Amateur freeskier, Ohio Dreams Coach, and Lawrenceburg, Indiana-born Nick Goepper, beat out 81 participants this afternoon to win professional freeskier and X Games gold medalist, Simon Dumont’s, third annual Dumont Cup held at Sunday River Ski Resort. This is the second year in a row that an amateur has out-shined the professionals during the event’s three-year history and Goepper’s second big win since taking third at this year’s Dew Tour.

To win today’s event, Goepper executed a flawless switch double rodeo 900 to a double cork 1080 during the slopestyle finals held on Sunday River’s Rocking Chair Terrain Park.  

Goepper, who earned 92.4 points, is joined on the podium with Gus Kenworthy from Telluride, Colorado who took second place with 90 points, and Jacob Wester from Stockholm, Sweden, who took third place with 87.6 points.

Goepper walks away with $12,000 in cash, second place wins $5,000 and third place, $3,000.

Last year’s Dumont Cup was won by Park City-based Alex Schlopy. An amateur at the time, Schlopy has since won a gold medal at this year’s X Games.

Newry, Maine (March 8, 2011)—A middle school student from Ipswich, Massachusetts, submitted an original song to win Sunday River Ski Resort’s first-ever Get Schooled Giveaway. This past January, Sunday River, located in Newry, Maine, invited students from middle schools and high schools throughout the country to compete in the contest to win a weekend stay at the resort’s ski dorm with 49 of their closest friends from March 25 to 27, 2011.

To enter, students were asked to submit the reason they deserve a field trip to Sunday River. Thirteen-year-old Sofia Gadbois emailed an MP3 file on which she is accompanied by her father on guitar as she sings “Fly Away.” The song includes such lyrics as “up on the mountain/underneath the sun/feeling though I have been here before” and “these old trails are like my best friends/trail to trail it’s like they never end.” Very appropriately, she ends the song with “Just find your happy place,” an echo of the resort’s ongoing marketing campaign Find Your Happy Place.

“The response to this contest was fascinating,” Nick Lambert, VP of Sales and Marketing for Sunday River, says. “Students from all over New England submitted songs, poems, and letters. It was a tough decision, but Sofia won the hearts of the judges with her original song.”

The Dumont Cup returns to Sunday River for its 3^rd year expanding the number of entrants to showcase some of the best amateur athletes freeskiing has to offer   

Newry, Maine (February 18, 2011) –It took a mountain to build X Games gold medalist and world record holder, Simon Dumont, and now that mountain – Sunday River – and Dumont are working together on the 3^rd  Annual Dumont Cup scheduled for March 25-26, 2011, where a new freeskier will reign supreme.

“The Dumont Cup was created to showcase skiers from the East Coast. There’s so much talent there, and sometimes they get overlooked.” said Dumont. “The positive response we’ve gotten from the ski community has far exceeded my expectations.  Not only are we continuing to showcase the best the East has to offer, but we’re drawing skiers from all over Canada and as far away as Europe.”

Dumont, along with professional freeskiers: Tom Wallisch, Gus Kenworthy, Peter Olenick and Jossi Wells, will mentor, compete and judge skiers on a slopestyle course located in Rocking Chair Terrain Park designed by Dumont himself.

$20,000 in cash and prizes are up for grabs for first, second and third place finishers. Amateur skiers will also have the opportunity to ski with the pros and score some great prizes from Dumont Cup Sponsors.

Qualifiers are held in two sessions on Friday, March 25^th from 10a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and determine the top 40 amateurs sent to semi-finals on Saturday, March 26^th.

During the semi-finals and finals, professional and amateurs skiers compete side-by-side. Judges determine the top three overall winners as well as a stand-out amateur from the two-day competition.

Finishing in first place in the ski field was Dan Jones followed by second place finisher Jeremie Vielleux from Carrabassett Valley Academy who was also last year’s ski champion, and Andy Blanchard from Sunday River in third place.

In the snowboard category, Michael Ravelson from Loon Mountain took first place, followed by second place finisher Jack Alosa from Gould Academy, and third place finisher Sean Kaulbach.

The Downtown Showdown, which kicks off the city’s WinteRush 2011 celebration, included a 20 foot by 24 foot man-made mountain which featured two 30 foot rails as well as a wall ride.

Athletes were scored on their creativity and use of technical tricks.

Athletes from all over New England including Gould Academy, Carrabassett Valley Academy, Sunday River, Sugarloaf, Loon Mountain, and Mount Snow Academy competed.

Over $5,000 in cash and prizes were awarded to tonight’s podium placers including $400 and an Oakley Minute Machine watch to both first place finishers, $200 and Oakley goggles to both second place finishers, and $100 and Oakley goggle to both third place finishers.

Tonight’s Downtown Showdown kicked off at 5:30 p.m. and consisted of an open rail jam before moving into finals between 6-7 p.m.  Finals included the best six skiers and snowboarders as deemed by judges from both Sunday River and Sugarloaf.

Thanks to sponsorship help from Red Bull and Oakley, this year’s Downtown Showdown also featured a DJ, MC, lights, and music.

Newry, ME (December 30, 2010)—From January 3 to January 7, 2011, Sunday River opens its doors to college students for a week of nonstop partying and deals. From eight mountain peaks filled with 18 inches of newly fallen powder, to headliners including Jah Cutta and Rahzel, it’d be wise for any student to put off their New Year resolutions until January 8.

Schedule of Events:
Starting Monday, January 3, Sunday River’s hottest après scene, the Foggy Goggle, hosts a different party every night of the week starting with an ’80s Dance Party featuring DJ Revolution and John Lee. Doors open at 8 p.m. and the cover charge is $10 for guests ages 18 years or older.  

On Tuesday, show your love for Caribbean-inspired culture with Jah Cutta and Royal Hammer during Reggae Night, and on Wednesday, get ready for Hip Hop Night featuring DJ-JS1 and Rahzel. Doors open both nights at 8 p.m., cover charge is $15 on Tuesday and $20 on Wednesday for guests ages 18 years and older.

Newry, Maine (November 17, 2010)—New this winter, Sunday River is harnessing the power of geo-location and social media with a new Facebook application called Sunday River Patches.

Built on the nostalgia of embroidered patches often seen sewn onto jackets and backpacks, Sunday River Patches includes a total of 25 patches earned by checking in to key places located throughout the resort’s eight interconnected peaks.  The idea behind this mobile game of exploration stems from Sunday River’s new marketing campaign titled “Find Your Happy Place.”

“Patches serves multiple purposes,” Nick Lambert, VP of Sales and Marketing, says. “Firstly, it encourages our Facebook fans to interact with one another while exploring the resort, and it’s a great vehicle for word of mouth marketing. Secondly, as Facebook continues to evolve, our ability to use this social medium to provide relevance to our guests only continues to improve.”

Designed by Boston-based social media agency Brand Networks, Sunday River Patches can be added to anyone’s Facebook profile by first visiting the Patches tab on the official Sunday River Facebook Page. Once Patches is activated, guests can use their mobile phone to check in at various locations around the mountain to earn virtual patches including an ‘Explorer’ patch, ‘Buddy’ patch, or ‘Powder Day’ patch.

This past weekend during the Boston Ski and Snowboard Expo, Sunday River created an official check-in at the resort’s sales booth designed to test the Patches application. Though Sunday River has not worked any deals into this location-based adventure game yet, it intends to.

“Our plan down the road is to combine Patches with Facebook Deals and provide incentives for skiers and riders interested in exploring our resort further. For some skiers, their Happy Place might be a patch unlocked on a powder day. For others, it will be unlocking a deal on a half-priced appetizer at the Foggy Goggle,” Lambert adds.

Newry, Maine (October 22, 2010, 3:35 p.m.) – Checkmate, Mother Nature. Sunday River wins.

Thanks to 19 hours of nonstop snowmaking, Sunday River Ski Resort, located in Newry, Maine, became the first resort in the country to open as of 3:30 p.m., with skiable terrain including its T2 trail accessed by the Locke Mountain triple, skiing from the top of the mountain to its midstation. 

This marks the fourth year in a row that Sunday River can boast being the first resort on the East Coast to open and the first time ever the resort can claim to do so on a country-wide scale. 

“It goes to show the magnitude of our snowmaking system and level of commitment towards making this happen,” Brent Larson, VP of Mountain Operations for Sunday River, says. “We started snowmaking last night, worked nonstop and we’re skiing today, which is pretty incredible.”

Starting at 9 last night, Sunday River turned on 74 snowguns and kept them blazing throughout this afternoon. At sunrise, a handful of skiers and riders waited patiently at the base of the Locke Mountain triple chairlift until the resort officially announced it would open.

Sunday River first tested its snowmaking system with a top-to-bottom quality control check back on Sunday, October 10, 2010. The resort used 80 guns to test for water pressure consistencies across Locke Mountain. Since then, a series of unfavorable weather events kept the resort from making snow up until last night.

“We hope to keep going with as much snowmaking as possible over the next couple of days,” says Larson. “We still have a ways to go before we’re top to bottom, but given how quickly we were able to pull together the top portion of T2, it won’t be long now.”

Sunday River will remain open until 4:45 this evening.

Skiers and riders unable to make it up this afternoon will also have this weekend to take in conditions. Sunday River will continue to make snow as weather permits.

Lift tickets are $25 and can be purchased out of the Barker Base Lodge adjacent to the Locke Mountain triple chairlift.  The Locke Mountain triple chairlift will open at 8 a.m. with last chair at 3:30 p.m.

Newry, Maine (October 10, 2010)—Early this morning Sunday River started on day two of its pre-season snowmaking test, firing off 40 Boyne Low-Energy Fan Guns across the slopes located near the South Ridge Base Lodge. Yesterday, the resort used another 40 tower guns for a test that took place on the highest elevation points of Locke Mountain.

This morning’s effort completes the resort’s pre-season top to bottom quality-control test.

“When you’ve been the first resort to open year after year, you’re automatically held to higher standards,” VP of Mountain Operations Brent Larson says. “Each year we have everything in order by September 15, which may seem early to most, but that’s because most resort’s don’t operate at our level of snowmaking or have the ability to make snow on days like this.”

The past three years, Sunday River has been the first resort on the East Coast to open, thanks to a series of quality-control tests similar to the ones conducted this weekend.

Prior to this weekend, Sunday River checked for water pressure efficiencies across three mountain peaks. All hoses and hydrants have also been observed to ensure effectiveness so that once colder temperatures set in for the duration of winter Sunday River can begin to make snow on Locke Mountain, the resort’s first peak to open the past three years, and push to open for the 2010/2011 season.

Sunday River opened last winter on October 14, 2010—its earliest opening in over a decade. Thanks to last year’s early-season snowmaking efforts, the resort also celebrated the longest season in the east and its longest season ever, staying open six months and six days.

This weekend’s snowmaking test falls during resort’s annual Fall Festival Weekend and serves as a reminder to guests that winter is approaching. This timely display also serves to remind skiers and riders of the resort’s pre-season pass sale deadline taking place Monday, October 11, 2010.

Sunday River’s opening day for the 2010/2011 season is weather dependant and slated at this time for mid-November.

Larson adds, “Of course, if we can start the winter off any earlier we will. We’re just waiting on Mother Nature for a helping hand.”
