Newry, ME (June 10, 2013)—In less than two weeks, Sunday River Resort will reopen its Adventure Park for the summer for guests interested in Zipline Tours, Scenic Lift Rides, Hiking Trails, Geocache Adventures, and Mountain Biking. 

New this summer, the resort is also boasting the addition of a Climbing Wall and bike park enhancements including a new pump track, cross-country loop, and mountain bike school. 

Sunday River is open June 21 through Labor Day Weekend (including holidays), Fridays through Sundays, from 10am until 4pm. 

Activities and Passes
Purchase adventures separately or buy an Adventure Pass for full-day access to Scenic Lift Rides, Twin Zips, the new Climbing Wall, Bungee Trampoline, and the Disc Golf Course for $25 (ages 13 and older) or $22 (ages 12 and younger).  

New! Climbing Wall—This 25-foot wall allows up to four climbers at a time test out their strength while safely harnessed to automatic belay devices. Special holds shaped as sea creatures make climbing fun for even the little ones. Tickets are $9 (all ages).

Scenic Lift Rides—Surround yourself with views of the Mahoosuc Mountains on New England’s only Chondola lift, or book a reservation for one of the resort’s Full Moon Dinners where a roundtrip lift ride is included.  Roundtrip tickets are $12 (ages 13 and older), $8 (ages 6 through 12), and free for kids ages 5 and younger. 

Twin Zips—Fill your “need for speed” on Sunday River’s 750-foot Twin Zips. Parallel lines allow you to race your friends and family to the base of South Ridge. Tickets are $15 (all ages) for two zips. 

Zipline Tours—This all thrills, no skills activity takes participants through a wooded area boasting a bubbling brook, waterfall, and a deep ravine. Guides lead participants across six lines ranging from 100 to 300 feet in length and end the tour at the resort’s 750-foot Twin Zips. Tours are available Thursdays through Sundays and cost is $49 (all ages). Height and weight restrictions apply. Reservations are recommended. 

Bungee Trampoline—Try to defy gravity while harnessed safely to an oversized trampoline made with aerial tricks in mind. Height and weight restrictions apply. Tickets are $9 (all ages). 

Disc Golf—Bring your discs or rent from Sunday River and try to net a “hole-in-one” while traipsing across the resort’s grass-covered, beginner nine-hole course.  Experience isn’t necessary and great views come standard with each hole.  Course access is $5 (all ages) or $10 with disc rentals.

Geocache Adventure—Test your technological expertise while exercising your legs! Eleven hidden caches complete with prizes make the challenge fun for all ages. Geocaching can be done using simple smart phone apps or GPS devices available for rent for $15. 

Bike Park—Home to over 20 miles of beginner, intermediate, and advanced lift-serviced terrain, improvements to the Sunday River Bike Park include a new cross-country loop, pump track, and mountain bike school. Lift passes are $29 (ages 13 and older) and $18 (ages 12 and younger). Prices for rentals and lessons vary and season passes are also available to purchase. Sundayriver.com for more information.

Newry, Maine (June 3, 2013)—Thanks to new events and activities, there is no shortage of things to do this summer at Sunday River Resort. Additions include a climbing wall to supplement existing activities like Zipline Tours and Disc Golf; enhancements to the Sunday River Bike Park in the form of a new pump track, 1.5k cross-country loop, and a mountain bike school; plus three Eastern States Cup mountain bike race events. 

Sunday River is also touting a new golf camp, two new music festivals, as well as two motorcycle events in addition to past favorites like the resort’s Tough Mountain Challenge (July 20) and North American Wife Carrying Championship (October 12). 
 

Sunday River opens for the summer on Friday, June 21 and is open through Labor Day Weekend on Fridays through Sundays (as well as select holidays) from 10am until 4pm. 

Climbing Wall

Sunday River’s new climbing wall will be located at the base of its South Ridge Lodge and will allow safe “on belay” and “off belay” action for climbers interested in testing their strength. Guests can take advantage of the climbing wall as a separate activity or as one of many activities offered by the resort’s Adventure Pass which also includes unlimited day use of Scenic Lift Rides, Twin Zips, its Bungee Trampoline, and the Disc Golf course for $25 (adults) and $22 (juniors). 

Sunday River Bike Park

The Sunday River Bike Park’s new pump track, located in the South Ridge base area on the Sundance trail, includes a closed circuit training area full of man-made dirt rollers and berms. The cross-country loop, also near the South Ridge base area, will provide a perfect outdoor classroom for the resort’s new mountain bike school, not to mention ideal training ground for riders interested in racing in one of the three new Eastern States Cup bike events taking place August 4 and September 21–22. 

For those not quite ready to race but willing to learn, the resort’s new mountain bike school offers one-and two-hour clinics designed to help. Both formats include bike rental, protective gear, and professional instruction; two-hour clinics also come with a single guided lift ride. Music Festivals

For music lovers, Sunday River is excited to announce two new music festivals—The RiverRock Music Festival taking place on Friday, August 23, and The Crossroads International Celtic Festival taking place September 11-15.

The RiverRock Music Festival is Christian music event produced by The Lighthouse Events and will feature performances by Dove award-winner, Chris August, as well as 33Miles and new artist, Love & The Outcome. Tickets are $20 or $30 to include a Twin Zips pass during the night of the event.

The Crossroads International Celtic Festival is a five-day event that will include artists from all over Canada, Europe, and the United States including Sprag Session, Boréal Tordu, Buddy Macdonald, Gawler Family Band, and Don Roy. 

Daily performances will take place at various venues throughout Western Maine with nightly after hours “Festival Club” events scheduled to take place out of Sunday River’s White Cap base area.   

New Events

Kids ages 12 through 17 are invited to swing into summer at the first ever New England Golf Camp hosted by camp director and owner, Bob Siff, Sunday River Resort, and the Sunday River Golf Club. Week-long sessions are available from mid-June through late-August and will focus on skills development and game etiquette with instruction from Golf Tips Magazine’s “Top 25 Golf Pros in American” Barry Goldstein. Motorcycle enthusiasts might choose to drive into summer instead thanks to two new events dedicated to two-wheeled fun. 

The 14th Annual Maine European Motorcycle Meet is scheduled for July 26-28 and will include vintage tours, adventure tours, and scheduled rides through the Western Mountains of Maine and the MotoGiro USA taking place September 20-23 is a skills event for small displacement classic motorcycles, scooters, and sidecar rigs, and is an event promoted by the United States Classic Racing Association. 
 

Both events will be based out of Sunday River and include scenic rides and group events as well as opportunities to see motorcycles of various makes and models.

Newry, Maine (April 9, 2013)—Sunday River Resort announced today that it will benefit from $5.7 million in capital investments for the coming 2013/14 season. Resort enhancements will include increased snowmaking; a new 15-acre terrain park trail; a renovated and enlarged hotel restaurant; roadwork into The Glades at Ridge Run; an outdoor wedding venue; and lodging upgrades to both Grand Hotels and resort condominiums.   

“These enhancements are steps in turning our resort vision into a reality and are projects that would not be possible without the commitment and support of our parent company, Boyne Resorts; CNL, and our homeowners,” Dana Bullen, Resort President and General Manager at Sunday River, says. 

Snowmaking Upgrades
This summer, Sunday River will install 200 new energy efficient snowguns manufactured by HKD Snowmakers. Part of the resort’s commitment to improved snowmaking, Sunday River began converting its older snowmaking equipment to HKD SV10 Impulse snowguns back in 2010. Last year the resort installed 300 SV10s which allowed it to pump nearly five times the amount of water in November than it did in the same time period in 2011, all while using 50 percent less energy.   

Trails being considered for the new SV10s include: Lollapalooza, Excalibur, Rogue Angel, Airglow, Black Hole, Vortex, Risky Business, American Express and the resort’s new terrain park trail.   

Terrain Park Trail
This summer, Sunday River will begin the earthwork required to build a 15-acre terrain park trail that includes the earthen sub-base for an 18-foot Superpipe. This trail, to be named at a later date, will be designed in partnership with X Games medalist and 2014 Olympic hopeful, Simon Dumont.   

Sunday River’s new terrain park trail will be located on North Peak between the Dream Maker and 3D trails – a site recommended to the resort by Snow Park Technologies – and serviced directly by the North Peak Express and Chondola high-speed lifts.   

Based on an ideal pitch for freestyle terrain and a straight fall line the trail will encompass 15 acres and measure 200 feet wide and 2,300 feet in length. The upper elevation of the trail will be 1,970 feet and the lower elevation will be 1,260 feet for a vertical drop of 710 feet.   

Once completed, this new terrain park trail will replace the current Rocking Chair Terrain Park and Superpipe located on Barker and Locke  Mountains, and will become the new site of Simon Dumont’s signature event—the Dumont Cup.    

Hotel Restaurant Renovation
This spring, Sunday River will begin to renovate its Legends Restaurant and reconfigure it to meet the resort’s growing demands for additional event space. This project will create 300 plus restaurant seats in a single space by combining the existing Legends Restaurant with conference space located within the same area of the Grand Summit Hotel.  

Upon completion, the new restaurant will utilize approximately 5,500 square feet and will be able to transition from an intimate restaurant to a larger event space as needed. To accompany the look of the new space, the resort will also revisit the name, menu, and overall brand of the restaurant, announcing any changes later this fall upon site completion.   

New Wedding Ceremony Site
During the summer and fall months, Sunday River hosts multiple wedding parties each weekend. To meet the growing demand for outdoor space, the resort is committing part of its capital towards the creation of a new outdoor wedding venue to be located slopeside adjacent to the Jordan Grand Hotel.   

This new venue will feature a gazebo and landscaping, and allow couples to take advantage of the resort’s alpine setting with views of the Jordan Bowl.  Project completion is set for this fall.  

Road to The Glades at Ridge Run
Also this summer, Sunday River will begin construction on a road leading to its newest real estate development, The Glades at Ridge Run, which came on the market last summer. 

The road will run approximately 1,000 feet in length and will start off of the Broadway entrance to the South Ridge Townhomes.   

Two of the five single family home lots are already under contract with construction of both slated to begin this summer. Road completion is set for later this summer.   

History at a Glance
To date, Sunday River has benefited from over $35 million in capital enhancements since joining the Boyne Resorts family back in 2007, including a Chondola lift, night skiing, snowmaking upgrades, hotel enhancements, and resort activities including geocaching, Zipline Tours, Twin Zips, and last summer’s additions of a Bungee Trampoline and Nine-Hole Disc Golf course.

 Newry, Maine (March 30, 2013)—Lawrenceburg, Indiana, native Nick Goepper took home the Dumont Cup in 2011 as an amateur and today takes home the 2013 Dumont Cup as one of the most recognized professional freeskiers in the world. 

Goepper’s winning slopestyle run earned him 95 points while second place finisher, Gus Kenworthy (Telluride, Colorado), earned 92.7 points, and third place finisher Joss Christensen (Park City, Utah) earned 91.7 points. 

Goepper takes home $10,000 in cash, Kenworthy $5,000, and Christensen $2,000. The three winners are also invited to the Team O’Neil Rally School in New Hampshire for off-road driving instruction with Dumont Cup founder Simon Dumont.

Goepper, Kenworthy, and Christensen were part of a group of a dozen professional skiers and nearly 80 amateur skiers who came to the slopes of Sunday River Resort to compete in the two-day fifth annual Dumont Cup—the largest freeskiing event on the East Coast and the only platinum-level slopestyle event recognized by the Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP).  

The Dumont Cup was founded by X Games gold medalist and 2014 Olympic hopeful Simon Dumont, in a partnership between event organizers Aura360 and host Sunday River Resort. The event takes place in the resort’s Rocking Chair terrain park.

Newry, Maine (March 24, 2013) – The Newry Fire Department edged out 13 other teams from around New England to take first place in the 23rd Annual Firefighters’ Race at Sunday River today. Meanwhile, proceeds from this afternoon’s race, as well as the 21st Annual Eat the Heat Chili Cookoff and the 28th Annual Ski-A-Thon, helped raise more than $330,000 for Maine Adaptive Sports & Recreation.

Newry’s winning time was 38.71 seconds. The margin of victory over second place finishers from the Jay (Maine) was only 1.16 seconds; the margin between the second and third place team from Bethel (Maine) was 1.19 seconds.
Other fire departments who raced today include teams from Livermore Falls, Farmington, Rumford, Rochester, Gorham, Hopkington, Jay, Falmouth, Lewiston and two teams from Auburn.

For the event, teams of five firefighters in full gear raced down a giant slalom course on the Tempest trail toting 50 feet of fire hose. Teams were composed of skiers and snowboarders.

Following the race was the Eat the Heat Chili Cookoff. This event included chef teams from Sunday River Resort and surrounding Newry and Bethel area and was judged by a panel of media celebrities including Jeff Peterson of WGME, Steve Minich of WMTW, Robert Witkowski of Portland magazine, Lori Voornas of WJBQ, outdoor writer Tim Jones, and special guest and Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation ambassador, Herb Gross.

Judge’s scores combined to award first place to the Shipyard team from Newry, Maine. The runner up awards went to the Grid Iron (Hot) team from Lewiston and third place was awarded to Roosters Roadhouse located in Bethel, Maine.

NEWRY, ME (March 15, 2013) – As many eastern resorts begin to wind down operations, the three New England ski areas managed by Boyne Resorts are ramping up for the spring skiing season with a late-season round of snowmaking.

With temperatures dipping down into the single digits last night, Sugarloaf, Sunday River, and Loon Mountain each fired up their snowmaking systems to ensure substantial snow coverage well into April and beyond.

All three resorts are already sporting deep base depths thanks to heavy natural snowfall throughout February and early March, and used last night’s window of cold temperatures to build them further and ensure ample snow deep into the spring.

This marks the second consecutive year that the three resorts have made snow in March, and coincides with the launch of the 2013–2014 New England Pass, an inclusive season pass that offers access to Sunday River, Sugarloaf, and Loon – a combined trail count of 345 trails and over 2,200 acres of skiable terrain. Anyone who purchases his or her pass in full can use it for the remainder of the current season beginning on March 18. Passes officially go on sale Friday, March 15.

This late-season snowmaking is made possible by heavy investments in new, energy-efficient snowmaking technology over the past three years. The three resorts have invested more than $3.6 million in state-of-the-art, low-energy snow guns, allowing them to produce more snow than ever before, while simultaneously using less energy.

“As we’ve shown in the past, our resorts are committed to a long spring skiing season, and the investments we’ve made in the new snowmaking technology allow us to make that happen,” said John McGregor, Senior Vice-President of Ski Operations at Boyne Resorts.

NEWRY, ME (March 11, 2013) — With access to three of New England’s premier resorts—Sunday River, Sugarloaf and Loon Mountain—the New England Pass is the season pass of choice for skiers and snowboarders. Now, when you purchase a 2013/14 New England Pass in full, you also get to use it to ski for the rest of this season.

For these three resorts, which have invested millions into perfecting slope conditions through snowmaking and grooming, the end of the season is historically any time between late April and early May. All three New England Pass resorts were also ranked Top 10 Eastern Resorts by readers of SKI Magazine in 2012.

Pricing for next year’s New England Pass products start at $389, providing access to a combined total of 347 trails, 2274 acres, 14 terrain parks, and 6 halfpipes during peak season, all served by 41 lifts. Passes go on sale starting Friday, March 15.

Each New England Pass also includes free or discounted skiing/riding at Boyne Resorts’ Western mountains, including Big Sky, MT; Brighton, UT; Crystal Mountain, WA; Cypress Mountain, British Columbia; Boyne Mountain, MI; Boyne Highlands, MI; and The Summit at Snoqualmie, WA.

The three levels of the New England Pass available for purchase include:
 
• The Bronze New England Pass, available for $389, is an all-ages season pass that includes midweek, non-holiday access to all three resorts.

• The Silver New England Pass, available for $665 for adults (ages 19–64), offers access every day of the season excluding 13 blackout dates.

• The Gold New England Pass, available for $999 for adults (ages 19–64), offers unrestricted access to all three resorts for the 2013/14 season.

Senior (65 and older), teen (ages 13–18), and junior (ages 6–12) versions of the Gold and Silver pass are also available for purchase. Gold passes are available for children ages 5 and under and seniors ages 80 years and older.

For full-time college students, the College New England Pass is available for $349 and includes unlimited skiing/riding at all three resorts. The College New England Pass will remain on sale at this low price until November 30, 2013.

For post-graduates who purchased a 2012/13 College New England Pass, next year’s Graduate New England Pass is available to them for $665 and also includes unlimited skiing and riding at all three resorts. Deadline to purchase the Graduate New England Pass at this low rate is April 30, 2013.

3/16/2013—Black Diamond Entertainment Series Presents: Wildlife Encounter

Join Sunday River and the W.I.L.D Center of New Hampshire for a Wild American Encounter. Kids and adults will meet and learn about some of American’s wild animals who call New England, the Great Plains, the Everglades, the Sonoran Desert of the South Western US, and Northern Canada home. Show starts at 7 p.m. in the Grand Summit Hotel Ballroom. Tickets are as follows: Ages 5 and under are free; ages 6 through 12 are $6 at the door or $4 in advance; and ages 13 and older $8 at the door or $6 in advance. 

3/23-3/24/2013—Maine Maple Sunday at Sunday River

Sample Sunday River’s very own resort-made Maine maple syrup during this state-wide event. The resort’s Sugaring House will be open to guests interested in learning more about the process of making maple sugar from the resort’s 950 taps and 3 miles of tubing.  

3/23/2013—28th Annual Maine Adaptive Sports & Recreation Ski-A-Thon

In addition to raising the more than half of MASR’s annual operating budget, the Ski-A-Thon is a ton of fun. It’s the only time during the year when a majority of the program’s participants, volunteers, and supporters are all together, celebrating as a whole community. A fun race, an obstacle course and other great activities are planned. 
 

3/24/2013—23rd Annual Eat The Heat Chili Cookoff & Firefighter’s Race

Watch firefighters compete in teams of five in full turnout and carrying a fire hose as they race down the mountain to raise month for the Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation organization. Then, sample chili from the best cooks in the area as they vie for the “Best Chili Cook” prize, and enjoy live entertainment. 
 

3/29-3/30/2012—The 5th Annual Dumont Cup

Formed by 9-time X Games medalist, Simon Dumont, the Dumont Cup draws pros from around the world to compete with 200 of the best amateur freeskiers in the country. Headed into its fifth year, the Dumont Cup is now the largest freeskiing event in the East and delivers two days of world-class competition to thousands of spectators that line the Rocking Chair terrain park on lower Barker Mountain. 

3/31/2013—Easter Celebration

The day starts with a sunrise service at the mid-mountain Peak Lodge and includes a special Easter egg hunt in the South Ridge base area. Families can expect appearances by the Easter Bunny and resort mascots, Eddy and Betty yetis, throughout the day in addition to great spring skiing.  

4/5-4/7/2013—Parrothead Festival

Birds of a feather party together during this annual Jimmy Buffet inspired festival complete with live music, a margarita mix-off, a Spam carving competition, pond-skimming and more. This weekend-long event also helps raise money for the Parrot Head Club of the Northern Tropics charity.

Newry, Maine (February 25, 2013)—On March 29 and 30, 2013 the World’s top amateur ski athletes will converge on the slopes of Sunday River Resort in what is the East Coast’s largest—and only major—freeskiing event of the year: the 5th Annual Dumont Cup.
 

Created by professional freeskier and 9-time X Games Medalist Simon Dumont, the Dumont Cup is a New England based slopestyle event that takes place in Sunday River’s Rocking Chair terrain park.  For two days, ski hopefuls will compete side-by-side with the professionals they idolize in hopes of earning points, prizes, and serious bragging rights.  In addition to Dumont himself, past professional competitors include Tom Wallisch, Gus Kenworthy, Peter Olenick, and Jossi Wells.

In five years’ time, the Dumont Cup has seen its share of milestones.  Though initially intended to be a regional event, competitors from all over the United States, throughout Canada and even Europe, regularly compete for a chance at the coveted Cup.  Former amateur athletes like Nick Goeper and Ken Gusworthy, now regulars on the pro circuit, took home the Dumont Cup in 2011 and 2012 respectively, providing them with a launching pad for their current high-profile professional careers. To date, the Dumont Cup is the only slopestyle event to be awarded platinum status by the Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP), putting it on par with the biggest slopestyle contests in the World.

“I’m really proud of what we’ve achieved with this event,” says Dumont. “When we started out, it was our goal to give New England amateur skiers a chance to get noticed and to help expand the audience for slopestyle skiing.  Since that time, the Dumont Cup has received support from contestants around the World, been formally recognized by the AFP, and we’ve seen several winners go pro.  I’m proud of what this contest has achieved in such a short time.”  

Cash and prizes are up for grabs for first, second, and third place finishers. Amateur skiers will also have the opportunity to score some great prizes from Dumont Cup sponsors.

Qualifiers will be held in two sessions on Friday, March 29, from 10:00 AM until 4:30 PM / EST.  The top 20 amateurs will advance to the semi-finals on Saturday, March 30.

During the semi-finals and final rounds, professional and amateur skiers compete head-to-head. Judges will determine the top three overall winners as well as a standout amateur from the two-day competition.  The athlete with the highest point total will be awarded the Dumont Cup.

Resort responds to “groundhog-effect” with half-priced lodging during Presidents’ Week

 Newry, Maine (February 4, 2013)—Today, Sunday River Resort launches a new online promotion, Six Weeks of Savings, with its first deal of the week—half-priced lodging at its Snow Cap Inn during Presidents’ Week, February 15–21, 2013. 

If reserved this week for Presidents’ Week, rooms at the resort’s Snow Cap Inn—normally selling at $210—will sell for $105 per night for two night stays and include breakfast. For this promotion, only 10 rooms are available to book each day and must be reserved by calling 800-543-2754 before this week’s deal ends on Monday, February 11, 2013. 

Sunday River’s Six Weeks of Savings was prompted after the nation’s foremost groundhog authority on weather did not see his shadow on Saturday, February 2, which indicates there will be an early spring. Sunday River, however, was quick to point out that under sunny skies its resort mascot, Eddy the Yeti, did in fact see his shadow the same time the groundhog did not. 

“We suspect the groundhog is not a skier,” Nick Lambert, VP of Sales and Marketing for Sunday River, says. “Eddy is [a skier] and knows that Sunday River’s snowmaking system and natural snowfall will keep us open until at least mid-April as has been the case historically.”

To ease the pain of the so-called groundhog effect, Sunday River has responded by kicking off its Six Weeks of Savings with its first deal posted today to sundayriver.com. For the next six weeks, the resort will post a new deal to its website every Monday by noon.

Newry, Maine (January 29, 2013)—Sunday River Resort has launched a new program inviting season passholders to bring a friend or family member to learn to ski or snowboard for free. “Introduce a Friend” allows 2012–13 Teen, Adult, and Senior New England Passholders and Sunday River Season Passholders to reserve one free First Experience Learn to Ski or Snowboard package, which includes rental equipment, a half-day learn to ski or snowboard clinic, and a limited-access lift ticket.

“We wanted to take the concept of introducing a friend or loved one to skiing or snowboarding, and design a program that provides the opportunity for our season passholders to pay it forward,” Nick Lambert, VP of Sales and Marketing, says.

To participate, passholders should call the resort’s Perfect Turn Ski & Snowboard School at 207-824-5080 to make a reservation for a First Experience package then stop by the season pass desk in the South Ridge Lodge to pick up a voucher. The recipient can then present that voucher when they check in for their clinic.

For non-season passholders also interested in introducing someone to skiing or snowboarding, Sunday River offers “Bring a Friend.” With Bring a Friend one person registers for an $80 First Experience package and their friend scores a lift ticket for free to use that same day.

200 acres and 44 trails currently open with more expected for the weekend
 

Newry, Maine (December 10, 2012)—For the second year in a row leading into the holidays, Sunday River Resort has the most open early-season terrain in New England. Based on current slope conditions and a weather forecast calling for continued snowmaking temperatures throughout this week, Sunday River Resort also expects to be open across all eight mountain peaks in time for the Christmas holiday.

“It’s a very big deal,” Nick Lambert, VP of Sales and Marketing for Sunday River, says. “Guests want to know what to expect before they book their holiday vacations, and we’re taking these questions out of the equation. As of this morning, we have 200 acres of skiable terrain open and almost twice as many trails as most other resorts in New England.”

Last winter, Sunday River went into Christmas vacation week with the most open terrain in New England, as well, thanks to its ability to make snow in marginal temperatures and the wherewithal to turn on its guns.  

“Other resorts may tout having the best or most extensive snowmaking,” Lambert says. “But, when you get down to it, you have the flip the switch and actually use it.” 

This year, the resort has made even more snow, on more days, since opening back on November 6, 2012, thanks to favorable temperatures and the recent purchase of 300 new low-energy snowguns. 

Just today, the resort opened its Lights Out, Aludra, and Sirius trails, which extend onto its Aurora Peak.  By the weekend, the resort expects to open more terrain on Aurora and offer ski-out access from the Jordan Grand Hotel. The resort’s other flagship hotel, the Grand Summit Hotel, is already ski-in/ski-out.

 Newry, Maine (November 29, 2012)—On Sunday, December 2, 2012, hundreds of pre-registered Santas will hit the slopes of Sunday River Resort in an effort to raise money for the local Bethel Rotary Club’s annual holiday toy drive.

“This is a hugely popular event and this year's online registration filled in less than two minutes time,” Dana Bullen, Resort President and General Manager for Sunday River, says. “It’s visually stunning to watch all those Santas skiing and snowboarding down the mountain and it puts everyone in the holiday spirit—all for a great cause.”

For Sunday's event, pre-registered Santas will check in with resort elves in the Welcome Center of the South Ridge Lodge between 7:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. These elves are in place to ensure that each participant is wearing a complete Santa outfit including the hat, beard, and belt, as well as collect the $10 participation donation for the toy drive.

From there, Santas then pose for a quick photo shoot outside of the South Ridge Lodge at 11 a.m. Following the shoot they will board the South Ridge Express chairlift before schussing down the beginner trails of Mixing Bowl and Broadway all at once.

For their participation, Santas receive one free lift ticket to use for the rest of the day, in addition to another free lift ticket to use anytime through December 14, 2012.

Guests not participating are invited to watch this annual "running of the Santas" from the South Ridge base area or from the sides of the trails. Please note that only Santas will be allowed to board the South Ridge Express chairlift following the photo shoot. Guests will be allowed to load the chairlift once the last of the Santas reach the top of the lift.

This new online storefront rewards skiers and snowboarders who pre-purchase their lift tickets at least 24 hours in advance. The sooner a guest purchases their lift ticket for any day of the winter season, the more they’ll save.

Total savings are based on a tiered pricing structure with a set quantity of lift tickets per tier. As tiers sell out each day, online lift ticket prices increase. Percentage savings per tier range between 35 percent and 10 percent off of window rates.

For example, adult one-day lift tickets for the majority of the season start at $55—$30 less than the current $85 window rate.

The annual SKI Magazine Resort Guide is widely recognized as the most prestigious resort ranking in the industry. The magazine’s rankings are determined purely by reader surveys, and a high ranking is coveted by resorts.

Sunday River, Sugarloaf, and Loon Mountain were the only resorts from their respective states to make this year’s Top 10 list—Sunday River and Sugarloaf were the only two from Maine, and Loon Mountain the only resort from New Hampshire. Newry, Maine (Oct. 6, 2012)—The Finnish couple, Taisto Miettinen and Kristiina Haapanen, from Helsinki, Finland, showed the North Americans how wife-carrying is done by winning today’s 13th Annual North American Wife Carrying Championship (NAWCC), which took place at Sunday River Resort this morning.

Miettinen and Haapanen have won the Wife Carrying World Championship title the past four years in a row as well as placed first in wife-carrying at the 2012 World Alternative Games. This is the couple’s first time competing in the North American Wife Carrying Championship at Sunday River.

Miettinen and Haapanen won today’s event with a time of 52.58 seconds against second place finishers, Jesse Wall and Christine Aresenault from South Paris, Maine who finished with a time of 53.22 seconds.

Miettinen and Haapanen win the 2012 North American Wife Carrying Championship title and prizes including cash equal to five times Haapanen’s weight plus her weight in beer.

Sunday River’s 13th Annual North American Wife Carrying Championship drew in 50 competing couples from all over North America including the 2009 North American Wife Carrying Champions and 2012 Nova Scotia Wife Carrying Champions.  

Wife carrying is a sport in which male competitors race while each carrying a female teammate. The objective is for the male to carry the female through a special obstacle track in the fastest time. The sport was first introduced at Sonkajärvi, Finland.

For today’s event at Sunday River, couples had to navigate a 278-yard course, which included such obstacles as a three-foot high log hurdle, a small pond, and a sand trap.  

Teams did not have to be legally married, but did need to be comprised of a man and a woman; both had to be over the age of 21.
The carry is the competitors’ choice, though most use the Estonian carry where the wife holds her husband around his waist and tightens her legs around his neck, thereby freeing the husband’s hands.

In the 13 years that Sunday River has held the North American Championship, all first place finishers have used the Estonian carry including today’s winners, Miettinen and Haapanen.

Newry, ME—Joining the ranks of the Indianapolis 500, Mardi Gras, and the Rose Parade, Sunday River’s annual North American Wife Carrying Championship (NAWCC) has been listed on the 2013 Top 100 Events in North America by the American Bus Association (ABA). This year’s North American Wife Carrying Festival will take place on October 6 during the resort’s annual Fall Festival Weekend.

In what has grown to be one of the most sought-after lists by travel professionals, motorcoach operators, and the general public, the ABA list highlights top bus-friendly fairs, festivals, parades, exhibits, theater, and shows across the U.S. and Canada. The 2013 Top 100 Events in North America was published in the September/October issue of Destinations magazine.

“We expect thousands of people at Fall Festival every year,” Dana Bullen, General Manager and President, says. “We received this award for the competition’s popularity and because we are a bus-friendly venue. Being considered on par with something like the Kentucky Derby [which also received the honors on the 2013 list] is very exciting.”

The NAWCC draws competitors from around the United States and Canada and as many as 3,000 spectators. This year, Sunday River will host its most competitive North American Wife Carrying Championship to date with a playing field of 50 couples that includes the 2009 North American champions, the 2012 Nova Scotia champions, and the four-time Wife Carrying World Champions, Taisto Miettinen and Kristiina Haapanen.

Inspired by Finnish wife-carrying folklore, the wife-carrying course is a regulation 278-yard long sprint built on the lower slopes of Sunday River. The course begins with an uphill run and continues through a field of obstacles including the always crowd-pleasing 10-meter-long waist-deep water hazard fondly referred to as the “widow maker” and a series of 39-inch high log hurdles. Winners take home the wife’s weight in beer plus five times her weight in cash.

Newry, Maine (September 26, 2012)—On Saturday, October 6, 2012, Sunday River will host its most competitive North American Wife Carrying Championship (NAWCC) to date with a playing field of 50 couples that includes the 2009 North American champions, the 2012 Nova Scotia champions, and the four-time Wife Carrying World champions.

Inspired by Finnish wife-carrying folklore, the winners of the NAWCC take home the wife’s weight in beer plus five times her weight in cash.

Former champions competing in this year’s event include the 2009 NAWCC champions, Dave and Lacey Castro from Saco, Maine; the 2012 Hants County Exhibition champions, Josh Mulholland and Nicole Vanzutphen; and the four-time Wife Carrying World champions, Taisto Miettinen and Kristiina Haapanen.

Located in the Western Mountains of Maine, Sunday River’s North American Wife Carrying Championship is part of the resort’s Fall Festival Weekend. This annual event draws thousands of spectators to the resort each year.

The event itself takes place on the snowless slopes of Sunday River, on a custom-built 278-yard alpine course complete with wooden hurdles, sand traps, and the always-popular “widow maker” water hazard.

Competing couples do not need to be married, but must comprise of a man and a woman, and both must be 21 years or older. Either partner can be carried and method of carry is up to the competing couple.  

Couples compete two at a time, for time, until the top two fastest times have been determined. Those two couples with the fastest times then go head-to-head for the North American Wife Carrying Championship title and prizes, which include the wife’s weight in beer as well as five times her weight in cash.  

Winners of this year’s event also secure a spot in Sunday River’s 2013 North American Wife Carrying Championship.

Newry, Maine (July 17, 2012)—There will be mud, there will likely be some blood, and there will most definitely be some beer at this Saturday’s third annual Tough Mountain Challenge taking place at Sunday River Resort in Newry, Maine.

2,500 racers have pre-registered to run Sunday River’s five kilometer obstacle course which is sprinkled with such challenges as running snowguns, barbed wire, mud pits, and fire.

This year’s event is up from 1,000 racers last summer and up from 200 competitors in 2010.

Taking place out of the resort’s South Ridge base area, the first wave of athletes will leave the start area at 10 a.m. Waves of 100 racers will leave every 15 minutes until the last group is released at 3:30p.m. Awards will take place at 4:30 p.m.

Spectators and racers are invited to watch other competitors tackle the Tough Mountain Challenge course from two major viewing locations—the South Ridge base area and the Barker base area.

Throughout the day guests are also invited to take advantage of the event festival planned complete with a live DJ, an outdoor barbeque and beer garden, which opens at noon, as well as live music by the Pete Kilpatrick Band starting at 1 p.m.

A kids version of the Tough Mountain Challenge, duly named the Mini Mountain Challenge, is also part of the festivities and will start at 3 p.m. Parents are required to sign a release form prior to the start.

The Mini Mountain Challenge is a free event with categories for ages 4 to 6 and 7 to 12. Kids can expect a short course that includes some uphill running, dirt, mud, obstacles, snowguns and more.

Finally, the coming weekend also marks the annual Mollyockett Days in Bethel—a two-day family festival featuring food, an arts and crafts fair and fireworks, plus a five kilometer road race on Sunday.

Newry, Maine (July 10, 2012)—Summer speeds into Sunday River Resort this Friday, July 13, with the addition of a bungee trampoline, 9-hole disc golf course, and mountain bike skills park, not to mention the start of two days’ worth of fast and furious racing when the New England Forest Rally rolls into town for the weekend.

Headquartered just outside of Sunday River’s South Ridge Base Lodge, guests can learn more about the world of rally racing at this year’s new event Rally Village. Rally competitors, including 2011 Champion, Antoine L’Estage, and 2011 Rally America Overall Champion, David Higgins, will start and end each day at Sunday River including for a short race at the resort on Friday morning.

Friday and Saturday evening, after the competitors return to the resort, award ceremonies and celebrations will take place and are open to the public. Each evening will also include a barbecue, and on Saturday there will also be live music and plenty of opportunities to meet some of the event’s racers.

Sunday River’s many mountain activities, including its new bungee trampoline and disc golf course, will be available from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Tickets can be purchased inside of the South Ridge Base Lodge. Bungee trampoline tickets are $9 for all ages, disc golf access with discs is $10 or $5 for just course access. Newry, ME (May 23, 2012)—As part of its summer opening weekend, Sunday River Resort will be hosting Western Maine’s Largest Yard Sale in the South Ridge Base Area on Saturday, June 30, 2012, the day after the resort officially opens its doors for summer activities.

“All skiers love a good yard sale,” Caroline Ochtera, Marketing & Events Manager at Sunday River, says, referring to the good-natured term used when skiers fall and spread their equipment along the trail. “It only makes sense that we would take that literally and open our doors to people selling their wares and create Western Maine’s Largest Yard Sale.”

The all-day yard sale will include 50 spots—approximately 10 feet by 20 feet—in the parking lot adjacent to South Ridge, Sunday River’s main base lodge. Anyone interested in participating in the yard sale can register for a space for $10. Everyone is invited to wander the yard sale free of charge to locate treasures, antiques, or simply interesting trinkets.

Friday, June 29, marks opening day for Sunday River’s summer activities and the opening day for the mountain bike park. This sales period offers skiers and snowboarders the chance to purchase next year’s passes at their absolute lowest rates.

Next year’s season pass products, which will be available for purchase online and at each resort on March 15, includes a payment plan for guests who purchase their passes by the April 30 deadline.

With the payment plan, guests can pay just $50 at the time of purchase to lock in the spring sale pricing, and then complete the purchase in four equal, automatic installments on June 1, July 1, August, 1, and September 1. The payment plan option is available for phone, mail, or in-person purchases only, through April 30.

This year, the Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) officially recognized the Dumont Cup’s importance by elevating it from a gold status event to a platinum status event. Created to highlight New England’s best skiers, the Dumont Cup has drawn competitors from as far away as Europe and all throughout Canada. Newry, Maine (January 23, 2012)—In collaboration with OutRyders and DownEast Pride Alliance, Sunday River Ski Resort will host White Out Weekend (WOW), February 9–12, 2012—three days dedicated to the gay and lesbian community.

WOW weekend features “drag” races where skiers and riders can showcase their divine skiing selves, après get-togethers, spa treatments with complimentary wine, a Studio 54 soiree, and a White Out (blacklight) Party at the Peak Lodge with Provincetown’s DJ MaryAlice.

Other activities over the weekend include First Tracks, an early-morning corduroy run before lifts open to the public for those who reserve a spot in advance; 12-Hour Skiing/Riding on Friday and Saturday; Zipline Tours; and fireworks.

Special lodging rates at the Grand Summit Resort Hotel and the Jordan Grand Resort Hotel start at $167 and include slopeside lodging, lift tickets, free daily adult ski or snowboard clinics, and free breakfast, daily. Newry, ME (January 11, 2012)—Sunday River and Sugarloaf resorts will host their 4th annual Downtown Showdown rail jam event in Portland, Maine’s Monument Square on Friday, February 3, 2012 from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m.

One of the few urban rail jams in the country, the resorts partner with the City of Portland to bring the mountains of Maine to the metropolitan streets in the form of a five-story, snow-covered rail and staircase feature.

For this invitation-only event, 30 of the region’s best skiers and snowboarders will be invited by Sunday River and Sugarloaf to compete and showcase their skills.

Free to watch, last year’s rail jam drew in thousands of spectators who gathered around the manmade mountain to watch as athletes competed for more than $4k in cash and prizes. This year’s prize purse will be valued the same.

Winners in last year’s ski category included first place finisher Dan Jones, followed by second place finisher Jeremie Vielleux from Carrabassett Valley Academy (also the 2010 ski champion), and Andy Blanchard from Sunday River in third place.

In the snowboard category, Michael Ravelson from Loon Mountain took first place, followed by second place finisher Jack Alosa from Gould Academy, and third place finisher Sean Kaulbach.

A list of competitors for this year’s event will be released later this month.

In addition to the show of skills put on by the athletes, Monument Square will be lit and a DJ will be onsite mixing music. Partner guests Red Bull and Oakley will also be onsite passing out free drinks and gear.

Newry, ME (January 5, 2012)—From specialty wine dinners to evenings that feature guest chefs from two highly acclaimed Portland, Maine-based Italian restaurants—Vignola and Cinque Terre—Sunday River Resort is pairing new culinary adventures with its Dining at The Peak experience in time for the New Year.

“Working with brands like Goslings Rum, Shipyard, Vignola, and Cinque Terre is our way of evolving the Dining at The Peak experience,” Jim Largess, VP of Food and Beverage for Sunday River, says.

Open on Saturday evenings through mid-March, Sunday River’s Dining at The Peak first opened in 2008 with the addition of the resort’s hybrid Chondola lift. The experience combines an intimate gondola cabin ride to the Peak Lodge where guests are then treated to complimentary glasses of champagne, passed hors d'oeuvres, a four-course meal, and live music.

Newry, Maine (December 8, 2011)—Sunday River Resort is gearing up to celebrate its second annual Winterfest Weekend on December 17 and 18 with fireworks, fire dancers, live music, Santa Claus, Zipline Tours, special rates on snowboard rentals, a winter-themed dinner, and lodging packages with low rates starting at $79 per person. Winterfest Weekend also marks the beginning of 12-Hour Skiing and Riding at the resort.

Newry, Maine (November 28, 2011)—For the 12th year in a row, Sunday River Resort is inviting 250 pre-registered skiers and snowboarders to hit the slopes in full Santa attire to celebrate Santa Sunday on December 4, 2011. This annual event raises money for the Bethel Rotary Club’s Annual Holiday Toy Drive.

Registration began  at noon today on Sunday River’s website and the 250 available spaces filled within 8 minutes.

“This is a hugely popular event,” Dana Bullen, Resort President for Sunday River, says. “It’s visually stunning to watch all those Santas skiing and snowboarding down the mountain and it puts everyone in the holiday spirit.”

Santa Sunday participants will check in between 7:30 - 10:30 a.m. in the South Ridge Base Lodge and then participate in the 11 a.m. photo shoot. Participants will receive one free lift ticket to use for the rest of the day, in addition to another free lift ticket to use anytime through Friday, December 16, 2011.

Santa Sunday participants must arrive to the event wearing all of the following items: one red Santa hat including a white pompom, one red Santa jacket, one pair of red Santa pants, a Santa beard, and a $10 (or more) cash donation for the Bethel Rotary Club's Annual Holiday Toy Drive.

Guests not participating are invited to watch this annual running of the Santas from the South Ridge base area.

Newry, Maine (November 14, 2011)—Sunday River Ski Resort is hosting its annual Tin Mountain Round Up this weekend, November 19–20, 2011. Skiers and snowboarders who arrive with three or more items of nonperishable food to benefit the local Andover Food Bank annual drive will receive $10 off of a lift ticket.

Tin Mountain Roundup is part of the resort’s corporate initiative to give back to the community through in-kind giving, food drives, and events that raise money for such programs as the Bethel Rotary Club’s Toy for Tots, Maine Handicapped Skiing, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation as well as Sunday River’s Regional Charitable Fund.
 
“As the holidays approach, we are reminded of those who may not be as fortunate,” Dana Bullen, Resort President and General Manager for Sunday River, states. “The Tin Mountain Round Up has become a tradition for us, like any other Thanksgiving tradition, but also these types of annual events add to the overall guest experience, create lasting memories for those who participate, and are beneficial to the community.”

The Andover Food Bank was established to provide emergency food to those who find themselves in short-term crisis situations and without the means to buy food. Newry, Maine (November 8, 2011)—In celebration of Veterans Day, Sunday River will offer a free adult lift ticket to all military personnel and their dependents, active and retired, with proper identification.

Resort President and General Manager Dana Bullen made the announcement today saying, "Sunday River is honored to offer this free lift ticket as a token of appreciation to our nation's service men and women.”

Forms of accepted identification include a U.S. Uniform Services Identification Card, U.S. Uniform Services Retired Identification Card, Current Leave and Earnings Statement (LES), a photograph in uniform, arrival to lift ticket window wearing an authentic uniform, a Veterans Organization Card (American Legion and VFW), or a DD Form 214.

Military personnel are defined for this program as active members of the U.S. Navy, Air Force, Army, Marines, Coast Guard, and National Guard

Sunday River plans to reopen its T2 and Upper Sunday Punch trails and Locke Mountain Triple chairlift Thursday, November 10, and will remain open seven days a week.

For non-military personnel, special early season rates are available at just $29, Thursday through Sunday, for a lift ticket. All skier and rider services are out of Barker Base Lodge except for season pass purchases and pickup, which are out of South Ridge Base Lodge.

Newry, Maine (September 29, 2011) – The deadline for the best rates on a 2011-2012 New England Pass is Monday, October 10, leaving skiers and riders just over one week to purchase one of the most popular season pass products in the East.

The New England Pass provides access to Sugarloaf and Sunday River in Maine and Loon Mountain in New Hampshire, making it one of the most versatile season pass products available to skiers and riders.

New for the 2011-12 season, the three resorts are offering a “Graduate Pass” for college graduates. Any recent college graduate who purchased a 2010-11 New England College Pass is eligible to purchase the Graduate Pass, which offers unlimited skiing and riding at all three mountains at a lower rate than the standard adult Gold New England Pass. 

With prices starting at $439 for access to a combined total of 348 trails; 2,169 acres; 17 terrain parks; and 6 halfpipes; all served by 41 lifts, the New England Pass is the best value in the Northeast.

Newry, Maine (September 6, 2011)—8 time X Games medalist, 2014 Winter Olympic hopeful, world record holder, and Sunday River Resort sponsored professional skier, Simon Dumont, will get his chance to test his baseball skills as ceremonial pitcher before the Red Sox vs. Tampa Bay Rays in Boston on Friday, September 16, 2011.

“I’m really looking forward to throwing the first pitch at Fenway,” says Dumont. “Growing up in Maine, I’ve been a New England sports fan since I was born. I’d like to thank Sunday River and the Boston Red Sox for making this possible.”

Dumont is scheduled to throw the ceremonial first pitch at 7:10 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on NESN, WEEI-AM, WWZN-AM and MLB.TV.

Newry, Maine (August 17, 2011)—Registration for the 12^th Annual North American Wife Carrying Championship held at the Sunday River Ski Resort in Newry, Maine will open at noon on Thursday, September 1, 2011. Registration is $49 per couple and available online through the event page at www.sundayriver.com.

Registration is almost as competitive as the actual event. Open to only 50 couples, race day is set for Saturday, October 8, 2011 and draws in competitors from all around the United States and Canada and as many as 3,000 spectators.

Winners of the North American Wife Carrying Championship take home the wife’s weight in beer plus five times her weight in cash. As a result, both team members must be 21 years of age or older.

Wife-carrying teams must also be comprised of a male and female competitor. The female does not need to be the legal wife of the male nor does she need to be the one carried.

The wife-carrying course is a regulation 278-yard long sprint built on the lower slopes of Sunday River. The course begins with an uphill run and continues through a field of obstacles including the always crowd-pleasing 10-meter-long waist-deep water hazard fondly referred to as the ‘widow maker’ and a series of 39-inch high log hurdles.

The origin of the North American Wife Carrying Championship stems from Finnish history where men carried women for training and sport. While this concept comes across as slightly uncivilized today, this modernized event is a fun, family-friendly race and a true test of physical strength, agility and teamwork between man and woman.

Registration is limited to 50 teams. Pre-registration is encouraged but on-site registration will be offered if space allows on the day of the event.
