Not long ago the UK was bemoaning the introduction of a hose pipe ban. Plans were being looked at about moving water down from Scotland to the South East at considerable cost to look at long term solutions to the problem. The age old questions of why does a country that does not have a massive heat problem have so little water. Countries like Spain (currently going through a heat wave) have introduced no hose pipe bans. Cracked and old pipes are often sited but I have been hearing this for over 20 years.

How quick a situation can turn around, with flash floods hitting the country over the last few weeks from one end to the other. people facing the misery of what to do with their houses that are now full of mud ruining many of their possessions.

Again I have to go back to Spain (I had a recent holiday there) and in many towns they have massive storm drains to cover their huge rain storms that only hit for about 2 weeks a year.

What is really ironic is that in some areas of the UK the hose pipe bans are sill there as underground supplies have not been replenished. We certainly live in a strange world.

David Beckham has not been picked to play in the GB football squad for the olympics and I am sure he will receive a huge amount of sympathy about this.

But I ask the question why should he. Do not get me wrong I thing David Beckham is a great guy and I have been one of his biggest fans for quite some time and I know he was a strong member of the bid to get the Olympics to London in the first place, but we do not pic national teams based on sentiment and lets face it there are better and younger players out there than the 37 year old Beckham.

Stuart Pearce, who is managing the team, will come under a huge amount of criticism for this decision but at the end of the day I can not blame the man.

Good luck to the whole team and to anyone competing in the Olympics. We just can not wait for it to start now.

Rumors are abound that Apple is planning a major revamp of their iTunes product to make more use of their iCloud service. This is probably the biggest shake up of the iTunes product since it was developed and if true would be to make more use of the sharing of music videos etc overt the ever popular mobile devises in Apple´s arsenal.

However how does it leave those of you in a position where your internet comments 3G etc are not that great. If you live in a major city in the US all would seem great but the other day while on Holiday in Spain I was traveling on a train across country and had almost no internet service at all.

In a time of cut backs you have to wonder how soon countries will have a good 3G network running let alone the coming 4G

This is part of a larger debate and I have heard commentators talking about the need for investment in this type of infrastructure to actually bring countries out of the financial crisis.

What is the connection like in your country?

In the world of technology that we live in being able to identify information about visitors to websites has been available for many years. What browsers they use, their screen resolution, operating system and so on but this information historically has only been used by web designers or in the case of geographical information by marketing managers to see the success of their products.

However now information is coming to light that some website are using this information to decide the targeting of searches and one hotel booking travel website has openly admitted that it will direct a Mac user to more expensive hotels as statistics show that they are more likely to spend more.

So does this mean that us mac users, yes I am one, are more used to the finer things in life. What does this say about the mac itself. Does this mean that mac users perceive they have a better product which they have been happy to pay more for.

There certainly are many differing messages here and I am not sure if I am flattered or insulted.

Mac: I´m a Mac

PC: I´m a PC

Mac: What´s it like in those cheaper hotels PC?

Wimbledon has started and we thought it would be interesting to take a quick look at this tournament and to ask why is it the most famous tennis competition in the world.

Mention the world Wimbledon and it is conjures up a number of thought, grass, strawberries and cream and english players crashing out. Oh yes lets not forget rain. Up until a few years ago the tournament was plagued with delays while “rain stopped play” but recently the investment has been made in that ever so simple device on the centre court, a roof. Ok not so simple as this one retracts, but you would have thought that this would have been a good investment some years ago.

So does the UK have any potential winners this year. Well probably not. Andy Murray is still playing for that top spot and has beed seeded 4th but it is hard to seem him getting past at least the top two who are really on form at the moment. However Murray is working hard to get there and in my humble opinion it is only a matter of time.

So sit back, with your barley water and take in the games. Love 30 to SupaSwap.

It you are Spanish this weekend it is meant to be lucky to be called Juan this last weekend as it is The Festival of Saint Juan however I think it is more evident to be lucky if you are called Alonso.

We start with the football. Xabi Alonso was playing for his county Spain in Euro 2012. Xabi is a player well known to the English fans as he played for many years at Liverpool. This was Xabi’s 100th game for his country and over those games he has been one of the most reliable elements, not always at the end of a move but usually playing an instrumental part of it. Well last Saturday playing against France Xabi not only scored but scored twice which were the only goals during the match sending his team into the semi finals.

Then we go to F1, which was held in the Spanish city of Valencia this weekend and for this it was Fernando Alonso that showed that special moment. He had started 11th on the grid at the beginning of the race, but by the end of what he personally has called his greatest race he was first at the checkered flag.

So those of you called Juan (John to you and me) happy Saint Juan and for those of you called Alonso, did you have a good weekend too?

At a weekend when europe holds it breath you have to wonder what the future will hold. We await the results of the Greek elections to know to a certain amount what direction Europe will go in.

Some commentators have flagged that this could signal Greece coming out of the Euro however most opinion poles state that the voters are not keen to leave the euro. What they are more interested in are renegotiating the deal that gave them financial help, the so call austerity measures.

I can not help in thinking that there are times that those that report the news mould it by the spin they put on it. However they also hold an important role in giving us the voters the ability to hold those in power responsible for they actions.

I would not be brave enough to predict the outcome of any forthcoming elections in europe, we at SupaSwap just wish all those facing difficulties in Greece and Europe as whole, the best for the immediate future.

Addendum: Since writing this and before posting this the Greek result has now come in. It looks like the polls are right, they have chosen to keep the status quo.

A thought struck me the other day just after the French election results, is it possible for any leader in the western leader to win an election at the moment.

To be a leader at the moment is a little bit of a poisoned chalice. Difficult decisions have to be made and to please the majority is almost impossible. You might agree with what they are doing or you might not but in this current financial climate nothing that needs to be done can be popular. Austerity, cut backs, budget cuts, project cancellations, price rises, nothing is a popular move.

Think about it who has survived an election recently. Elections in France, UK, Spain and Greece have all resulted in a change of leader.

The big test comes at the end of this year with the USA presidential elections. Can President Obama survive.

So you know me, I get an idea and then I am fixated on it. The last blog was about May 1st, so now I am picking another date Star Wars Day. “When is it” I hear all you budding Jedis cry, so you can go and worship in the temple of Lucas.

Star Wars day is on May 4th. Why May 4th, well its quite simple: may the 4th be with you.

Ok when you have stopped groaning, I do have a serious point. Well a semi serious one. The Star Wars films sparked a huge change in what we expect to see on the big screen. I was 7 when the first movie came out and I can still remember to this day watching that Star Destroyer coming over head (well it seemed like that) in that first scene. We could not wait to get back to the cinema to see the sequel and the threequel (is that a word). All three movies were pretty spectacular.

George Lucas´Vision

Because of the work George Lucas did we now have some amazing films hitting our screens. the latest Star Trek movie, The Avengers (catch the review in our latest film blog) and even the Mission Impossible movie, who knew blowing up the Kremlin would be that easy.

It has been good for us here at SupaSwap with all of the merchandising that is available there has been a wealth of toys, action figures, computer gamers etc hitting the market.

So when you are next watching the latest block buster, think about 1977, when a young farm boy met his mentor Ben Obi-Wan Kenobi and the face of film changed for years to come.

No I am not in distress. Today is May 1st. Well ok you might not be reading this on the day I wrote this blog so take my word for it when I wrote it it was May1st. May 1st is quite an important day depending on who you are.

Traditionally it is known as workers day, rather ironic that in many countries in the world it is a day you do not work, but it is rather more poignant with the current economic situation across the world.

Originally known as May day this public holiday did not always fall on the first and conjures up the though of Morris Dancers and May poles, welcoming in the summer.

International Workers Day

However today it is more known as International Workers day and as such it is celebrated in over 80 countries world wide. International Workers Day is a celebration of the international labour movement and the left wing movement, which has led to right wing governments trying to remove it as a public holiday. Because of this fact it has also been linked to the Communism and many of you will remember the large shows of strength that would be paraded through Red Square in Russia on this day during the Communist era.

This year we will see many taking advantage of this day to protest at austerity measures across europe and the large cut backs really start to hit hard. The future however will be an interesting one. With the economic situation in Europe far from improving, the threat to the single currency still looming and the possibility of a new President in France who does not support such hard cuts, who knows what might happen.

However here at SupaSwap we just get a holiday like most people. Well apart from me who is here writing this blog. Please take note boss!
