More than 10,000 lawsuits were filed against the drug Prempro of Wyeth Pharmaceutical’s hormone replacement therapy, for causing health problems. This is going to be settled by Pfizer Inc. that has its research centers in Groton and New London, and will be paying a minimum of $772 million in settlements to victims of health diseases, out of which $300 and $172 million respectively have already been paid in the earlier round of settlements while the rest will be paid in future.

Pfizer bought Wyeth for $67 billon about two years ago and has been criticized for launching the hormone replacement drug in 1995 even before studying the side effects of the drug properly. Prempro, being a mixture of estrogen replacement Premarin of Wyeth and progestin hormone provera of Pfizer, was supposed to reduce menopausal symptoms.

This was used as a standard therapy by medical community until 2002. Later, a study conducted by Women’s Health Initiative discovered that heart attacks, stroke and cancer may be related to this hormone replacement therapy, which alarmed the medical community leading them to re-consider the same.

Although Pfizer is reeling under the loss of patent exclusivity for its bestseller cholesterol pill – Lipitor – its shares are continuously appreciating under the leadership of the new executive Ian Read. The stock is already up by 25 percent since his ascension.

The total market of Prempro was more than $2 billion, with about 6 million Americans on hormone therapy, which has now reduced to mere $161 million annually. Prempro’s sales are not pulled out separately by Pfizer anymore; it is clubbed with the medicines of Premarin family that has suffered 8 percent cut in sales as compared to last year, fetching only $235 million in the first quarter.
