The German manufacturer BMW is coming back to the Isle of Man TT, with the S1000RR being their machine of choice. BMW used to enter the R90S at the TT decades ago in the Production class.
UK racer Maria Costello, one of the fastest woman riders seen at the TT, will compete in the Superstock, Superbike and Senior TT races on a bike supplied by Wollaston BMW in Northampton and purchased by her personal sponsor and good friend Tony Morris. Richard Higgs, Motorcycle Manager at Wollaston BMW, said: “We are always keen to support local racers and we were all very exited at the prospect of Maria challenging at the IoM TT races on our flagship sports bike.”
Steve Wong, Sports Bike Specialist at Wollaston BMW, said: “I know how determined Maria is to grab the lap record back at the TT this year, so when we launched the all new S1000RR I knew this would be a perfect bike for her return to the TT.”
BMW only entered the World Superbike Championship for the first time last year, but Costello, the first woman to claim a podium place in a race on the Isle of Man TT course, is confident of doing well on their new sports bike.
Costello roared back to form at the Manx Grand Prix last summer after two injury-plagued years and is determined to make 2010 a year to remember. She said: “It’s a magnificent gesture by Tony to buy the bike for me and I fully intend to repay his faith in me. “The BMW S1000RR has had fantastic reviews and Troy Corser and Ruben Xaus have proved in World Superbikes that the bike is competitive. I think it will make a great TT bike.”
To follow Maria’s progress this season go to: www.costelloracing.com. The BMW factory will be entering Rico Penzkofer on a WSB-spec S1000RR. Rico has posted a 119mph lap at the Island, so should go well this year.

The theory behind running the MotoGP season opener in Qatar at night is simple: Because the daytime temperatures in the desert state are so high, causing problems for riders, bikes and tires, taking advantage of the cooler nighttime ensures the race is easier on man and machine. The evening start also timeshifts the race to a more favorable broadcast time, right into the middle of the evening primetime in key Spanish and Italian TV markets.
But night races have problems of their own: For a start, there's the monstrous amount of energy required to provide sufficient light for the riders to race in. Then there's the fact that if it rains - extremely rare in the desert, but as we saw last year, extremely rare is not the same as never - the racing has to be stopped, as water on the surface reflects the overhead lighting, making it impossible to see properly to race.

Two unrelated themes dominated the 2009 MotoGP season: Cost-cutting and the Rise of the Aliens. Drastic reductions in testing, a limited number of engines and the dropping of Friday morning practice were all aimed at turning the Niagara Falls of cash the series consumes into a more manageable torrent. Meanwhile Jorge Lorenzo, Dani Pedrosa, Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner took a near whitewash of podiums, cleaning up 44 of the 51 rostrum spots available during the year.
2010 is likely to continue where 2009 left off, but these two different aspects are on a collision course, due for impact around midsummer this year. For though the manufacturers and teams continue to meet in the Grand Prix Commission, to discuss further ways of trimming the costs of racing, the fact that the contracts of the four finest riders of their generation all expire at the end of the season will unleash a bidding war unlike anything ever seen in MotoGP.
The Aliens, as Loris Capirossi has dubbed them, already command the lion's share of rider salaries in the series. Numbers are hard - if not impossible - to come by, but Valentino Rossi alone probably earns more than all of the riders except the Aliens combined, and Pedrosa, Lorenzo and Stoner will each earn many times the salary of any of the other Mortals. It may not be fair, but given that the Aliens won every race but one and hogged 86% of podiums this year, it is the only guarantee of getting your bike and your sponsors onto TV. Success sells, and without an Alien on your bike, success is a very scarce commodity indeed.

MAXXIS will title sponsor the ACU British Motocross Championship for three more years, giving security, stability and a strong financial and promotional footing to the best national series in the World. It means the innovative series organised by ACU Events which has brought in a new Superpole and three race per day format for 2010 will have a stable base for growth and expansion until at least 2013, giving the sport a major boost. Maxxis is one of the leading suppliers of competition off-road, on-road, car, van, truck, agricultural and bicycle tyres in the world, with 40-years of manufacturing experience allowing it to offer unequalled performance and quality at cost effective prices. It has been title sponsor of the British Motocross Championship since 2002 and is a stalwart of the sport in the UK. Maxxis International UK’s Managing Director Derek McMartin said: “Since we originally signed up as title sponsor back in 2002 the Maxxis ACU British Motocross Championship has developed into one of the strongest and most exciting series anywhere in the world. “Our ongoing investment is enabling the series to attract bigger and better fields and provide opportunities for talented young riders to break through into the professional ranks while its higher profile and professional organisation has prompted sponsors from outside the motorcycle industry to get involved. “In renewing our support for the British motocross championship for a further three years, and sponsoring two factory teams this season, we aim to help the ACUE reach a bigger and broader audience. This will be achieved not only through primetime TV coverage, but also via digital media initiatives.” The Maxxis British Motocross Championship is an eight round series in 2010, stretching from Little Silver in Devon to Duns in Scotland and also taking in the Grand Prix track at Mallory Park and a new track at Silverstone. Other top class venues include Lyng in Norfolk and established and historic Farleigh Castle, Foxhills and Hawkstone Park. ACU Events Series Manager Brian Higgins said: “We have developed a long and productive relationship with Maxxis and are absolutely delighted to have its support for a further three years. “It is testament to the proactive and professional approach that ACU Events takes to the series that it can retain such a large well-known brand as Maxxis as a title sponsor and other major sponsors. We will be looking to grow, improve and expand with Maxxis support and riders plus spectators in the UK can look forward to three years of top competition and events.” For more information on the Maxxis British Motocross Championship, visit www.mxgb.co.uk.
THE Maxxis ACU British Motocross Championship Privateers Cup will start this weekend at Mallory Park and as well as winning the title at the end of the season there will be plenty of round by round prizes to compete for.
At the end of the season the top scoring privateer in 2010 will win the Maxxis ACU British Motocross Championship Privateers Cup. Before then though, one MX1 and one MX2 winner per round will win a box of fantastic goodies that will include products from: • DP Brakes • Putoline Oils • Arai Helmets • Ekselsior Body Armour • Renthal • Muc Off • NGK • Maxxis Tyres Maxxis Series Manager Brian Higgins said: “The Privateers are real heroes in the ranks and the heart and soul of motocross; they love the sport and put everything into it. This Privateers Cup gives the MX1 and MX2 privateers something else to race for and recognises their efforts alongside the Factory teams, they will be fascinating Championships and the winners will be rightly some of the top riders in the country and hopefully use the titles to progress their careers.” ACU Business Development Manager Dave Luscombe said: “This is another step forward for the best national motocross series in the world and gives the non-Factory racers something tangible to race for, these are valuable products and the title will mean a lot to the winner. “However, this new award would mean nothing without the stunning support of the companies who have chosen to assist us. It is truly wonderful to see so many companies willing to back the sport, even in these tough financial times. The ACU calls upon all of its riders to support those who support the sport, starting with these wonderful partners” For more information on the Maxxis ACU British Motocross Championship visit www.mxgb.co.uk.

The bosses at Metzeler were celebrating this week as their new Interact tyres proved their worth, beating the Brands Hatch short circuit lap record by half a second.
Steve Plater took his HM Plant Honda Fireblade to an impressive unofficial time of 47.2 seconds, half a second below the lap record of 47.83. He also ran consistent mid 47’s during a long, race simulation test, one which left him extremely encouraged by the potential of the new Superstock tyre.
“Very encouraging times today especially with the race duration test but it’s also very easy to get carried away by times, especially around the Brands short circuit,” he claimed. “Other tracks may fare differently for me.
“I didn’t race Superstock last year so I have no reference point but the tyres were spot on today, no worries. I can’t wait to get back down here for the racing proper in a couple of weeks.”
Steve will line-up against a strong list of ex-British Champions for the super competitive Metzeler National Superstock Championship in 2010, which will once again run alongside the British Superbike series. The class includes three ex-British Supersport Champions; Plater, Glen Richards (Padgetts Honda) and three-time champ Karl Harris (GR Aprilia). Other top riders include Isle of Man hero John McGuinness (Padgetts Honda) and Richard Cooper debuting the high-powered Jentin Racing BMW S1000RR.
Reigning Metzeler Superstock Champion Alastair Seeley has moved up to the British Superbike Championship leaving his Relentless by TAS Suzuki ride to Dennis Hobbs. Scott Smart returns on the Moto Rapido Ducati whilst Howie Mainwaring (MSS Colchester Kawasaki) lines up with a chasing pack showing strength in depth.
The Metzeler National Superstock Championship will also have two high profile races at the Silverstone MotoGP giving an exciting showcase for the series, tyres and riders.
