Episode Twenty - Flywheel

Notes to follow...

I should make a note about the sound quality. I uploaded two versions of this show, one of lesser quality at around 20some MBs, and another at the highest possible quality at 70some MBs... The major difference is in he intro and outro music... it obviously sounds much better in the 70MB version. BUT uploading the 70MB version takes much much longer, as I have to use a different uploading technique. So, basically, I would love to provide the highest quality sound to our listeners, but you're going to hear me whisper and mumble either way, so I just don't think it's worth it to deal with the high quality feed. I'll put the music up on imeem, and make it available for download, so you can get it at CD quality if you want it.

We used a new mic this time around, and in some aspects, I was overconfident with it. I sat fairly far back from the mic, and as such, my voice doesn't shine through. So, sorry Ted, you're going to have to turn it up. I'm going to do some study on garageband and see if I can get rid of a bit of the hiss, and make the vocal track EVEN LOUDER, without buying a mixer. If someone would like to buy a mixer for us, I'll take the time to make sure it sounds even better... but as it is with no budget... yeah.

Episode Nineteen - Evan Almighty

With
Jon in the Middle East, we here at the SuperCandid Podcast were left to
our own devices. As such, I recorded a show with Justin, then crashed
my computer before saving it. So what you're getting here is myself and
my wife sharing our vastly different opinions of Evan Almighty, the most expensive comedy ever made, and one of 2007's great box office flops.

'Evan
Almighty' is the spiritual sequel to the Jim Carrey vehicle 'Bruce
Almighty'. Both films were written by Steve Odenkirk and directed by
Tom Shadyac. 'Evan' follows congressman Evan Baxter in his first few
days in office, while at the same time being hassled by God to build a
modern day Noah's Ark. He's got the big boat, the two of every animal,
crazy bible beard, old robes, everyone thinking he's a nut, etc.
Everything that made the original story a classic, with one glaring
ommission... having a POINT AT ALL.

You didn't see it. You don't care. After seeing the film, I don't either.

***

Notes!

'The Christmas Card' DVD that I mentioned has a page detailing the use of AnySoldier.com to send a card or note to a soldier overseas, serving our country.

Demon
Hunter's 'Storm the Gates of Hell' IS COMING OUT NOV. 6th! In three
editions at that... Limited w/ bonus songs and a DVD, Deluxe w/ bonus
songs, DVD, postcard, extended liner notes, super big box, pendant,
etc., and a vanilla version.

***

Check out that Outro! 'Back to Dust' by Sev Statik and DJ Dust... man... GREAT song.

Notes to follow soon...

Episode Eighteen - Beyond the Gates

This week we're reviewing Beyond the Gates(aka Shooting Dogs), the 2005 movie from director Michael Canton-Jones(Memphis Belle, Rob Roy, Doc Hollywood, Basic Instinct 2(WTF?) and starring John Hurt(The Elephant Man, I, Claudius, V for Vendetta) and Hugh Dancy(The Jane Austen Book Club).
It tells the story of a veteran Catholic priest and an inexperienced
young teacher who find themselves caught up in the Rwandan genocide of
1994. You might already know the basics of the story if you saw Hotel Rwanda,
but you might not(as my co-host didn't). This film also takes some
interesting turns exploring the role of religion and the presence(or

Episode Seventeen - Gospel Road

This week we're reviewing a movie I've been looking forward to for a while, Gospel Road: A Story of Jesus. Directed by Robert Elfstrom, and starring Elfstrom
as Jesus and Johnny Cash as the narrator who guides you through the
life of Jesus, this film is one of the most unusual films about Jesus
I've ever seen. It also features the incomparable music of Johnny Cash,
with help from June Carter Cash and Kris Kristofferson.
Tune in to see how it measured up to our (high) expectations, and to
hear a bit about what's coming up for the Super Candid Podcast!

Show Notes:

The San Antionio Christian Independant Film Festival(which we mentioned once before, here)

Across The Universe Official Website -Best Film I (Jon) have seen this year!

Episode Sixteen - Flood

My world is a flood. That's what it felt like last week, what with work and all. But at least my house wasn't starting to float away, which is what literally happens in the movie we review this week.

That's right, God's own house floats away. In a storm. Kind of ironic, you might say. Take that, Jerry Falwell!

Anyway, this is Flood, a documentary by filmmaker Tom Swift. Tom is a former TV producer and a filmmaker so independant that he doesn't even have an IMDB page. The real news is that Tom is a fan of the SuperCandid podcast! Or at least he listened long enough to find our webpage and email us, asking us to review the film. Wish granted! For our next trick, we'll try to keep to our vow not to review any more documentaries for a while! This is about the third since we promised not to review any more.

NOTES:

Awaken Pictures homepage, where you can watch and buy Flood. You can also read about the sci-fi film Don mentions, called Illusions.

Tom Swift's blog, which I just checked out at Don's suggestion. It's a pretty good resource for filmmakers, but he doesn't update too often.

And you can read about the program to train home-schooled Christian filmmakers here at the Christian Post. I'm really not sure about this. It sounds like a good idea and all, and I'm all for more Christians being filmmakers(just to improve the odds for good Christian films), but this seems like it might result in a whole generation of Michael Landon Jr. types. I guess Love Comes Softly 5-20 will have a need for directors.

The intro music for this episode was Water of the Gods by The Changes from Today is Tonight.

The outro is Become Who You Are by Mainstay from Become Who You Are.

You can download the podcast directly here, and as always, you can subscribe through iTunes, or whatever other program is your favorite podcatcher.

Episode Eleven - Why Should the Devil Have All the Good Music?

Why should the devil have all the good music? - Martin Luther

Well said... five hundred years later and people are still down on Christian music. This week we watched 'Why Should the Devil Have All the Good Music?' by Heather Whinna and Vickie Hunter. It's a documentary on Christian indie music and was filmed by two non-Christians. They ask fans and artists about hot topics like faith in art, art in a stereotypical stale genre, secular music, homosexuality, abortion, mainstream reception and crossover into the mainstream view.

Jon's input:

Probably the most independent Chrisitan movie we've reviewed on this
show is 'Facing the Giants', from way back in episode one.
But that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment release pales in comparison
to this one, which got no theatrical release or major home video.
Despite that, Why Should the Devil have all the Good Music? has
received excellent reviews from the likes of Entertainment Weekly and Christianity Today. It is our first documentary film, exploring
the world of independent Christian Music. With interviews and
performances from Steve Taylor(director of The Second Chance), Pedro
the Lion, Danielson Familie, (insert more bands here) this film by two
first time, non-Christian directors challenges everything that you
think you know about Christian pop music.

I forgot to mention them on the show, but the disc has excellent bonus
features. A director's commentary and several deleted scenes round out
the disc. Not too shabby considering that the megacorporation that
runs Fox Faith can't be bothered to even include the film's trailer.

Also, enjoy this Chick track. Jack Chick, in case you've just
returned from exile on the moons of Uranus, is famous for comic strips
that extol the dangers of various "popular" things. Most famously,
Chick wrote a strip that posited a direct link between Dungeons and
Dragons gaming and Satanic Cult Worship, including human sacrifice. In
this classic, Chick subtly critiques Christian musicians who are
tempted by success over faith.

Music, news and more...

Notes:

God I Hate 'Em!
ie. the backmasked version of 'Burning Down the House' that I mentioned in the show.

WSTDHATGM Website

Axl Rose 'preaching' from the stage.
Episode Ten - The Second Chance

Join us this week for our big tenth episode spectacular! (which we in no way reference at all during the actual 'cast)

We review my favorite Christian movie of all-time! THE SECOND CHANCE! It not only attacks mega-churches (of which I've been burned, but who hasn't?), it also brings to light the excellent acting chops of Jeff Obafemi Carr, the incredible direction of Christian music icon Steve Taylor, the ok acting of Michael W. Smith in a riveting story of bigotry, redemption and God's true message of love and ministry. Watch as Pastor Jake spits some street science and practices the sweet science!

Listen as Jon calls out Sony and Nintendo with an open letter against censorship.

Marvel as Don says almost nothing and has no meds to blame this time!

Show Notes:

- I was not likening AIDS victims to homosexuals. I remembered talk of a homosexual character on Sesame Street. Not that theres anything wrong with that...

- Steve Taylor started Squint Records. Get educated (via wiki... naturally).

- Cher received an Academy Award for Best Actress in Moonstruck.

- A better name for a sequel would have been 'The Third Chance' and would involve the Riddle Killer (see Episode Six - Thr3e).

Intro: "Everyone's a Little Bit Racist" from Avenue Q

Outro: "Put Your Lips to the TV" by Project 86

Email: SuperCandid@gmail.com, Don@SuperCandid.net, Jon@SuperCandid.net

Episode Nine - One Night with the King

This week we spend 'one episode with 'the King'... ZING! NO, we review the 2006 film adaptation of the biblical story of Esther, 'One Night with the King'. Based on the fictional Tommy Tenney/Mark Olsen novel 'Hadassah', this film follows a young Jewish woman as she first competes for the Queen's throne, then goes to bat for her people after a genocide decree is placed on their heads. Tiffany DuPont, Luke Goss, James Callis, 'Zeus' Tiny Lister, John Rhys-Davies and John Noble star... with TINY CAMEOS from Peter O'Toole and Omar Sherif (although the promotional materials will tell you otherwise). Described as "pornography for Christian women", so take that as you will...

Intro: 'One Night in Bangkok' by Murray Head
Outro: 'Der Kommissar' by After the Fire

You can find full versions of the intro and outro music on our LiveJournal.

Also, we now have an official domain! SuperCandid.net, and our own email addresses:

Jon@supercandid.net
Don@supercandid.net

This show went up a little early... because it could, and Jon is in Europe still, so the next show might be a bit late anyway.

Show Notes:

I'm going to start adding an addendum to our show, as we always get some fact wrong, and I'm a stickler for truth!

- 'Hadassah' was co-authored by Mark Olsen and Tommy Tenney.
Tenney wanted to write a fictional novel, but had never written fiction, so Mark
Olsen helped out.

- '006' was actually played by Sean Bean in 'GoldenEye'.

- When I said 'that bath scene was pretty nice!', I was referring to the large bath covered in flower petals LOOKING nice... literally. It wasn't an allusion to anyone bathing... My wife ribbed me for it.

Thanks!
- Don

I just read an interesting blog entry from ChristianCinema.com and I thought I'd share it. It's reguarding something Jon and I do weekly, try to love ugly movies. Take a look...

- Don

Skype! GAH!

Ugh... I'm hearing the new mix of Episode Seven and the vocal range is much closer, but Skype still butchered the whole thing! Haha... all the pops and glitches. Alright Jon, I apologize... I'm placing my blame on Skype for the poor quality.

Listeners! In the future we will try our best NEVER TO USE SKYPE AGAIN, however... This weeks episode was also recorded on Skype. Haha... BUT! We recorded it with a different method than last time... Jon and I were in the same room, recording with our regular old mic, but this time using Mrs. Jon's laptop. How is Skype involved if we're in the same room? We have a guest! Stay tuned for a very special episode of The SuperCandid Podcast, where Jon and Don learn how to trust, how to love, and how to grow alongside one another... *sniff sniff*

We'll be back with a regular old movie review in Episode Nine. Jon is going to France for a few weeks, so we're having to shuffle things around a bit. No big deal.

Here's hoping for better sound quality!

- Don

Episode Seven - The Last Sin Eater

A mysterious person lives in the hills above a peaceful community of Welsh immigrants in the Appalachians Mountains of the 1850s. Cadi Forbes(Liana Liberato) is intrigued by the person who arrives at her grandmother's funeral to offer forgiveness from sin. With the help of Miz Elda(Louise Fletcher, One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), she investigates the ostracized "sin eater," hoping to find absolution for her own sins. Along the way she meets a itinerant preacher(Henry Thomas, E.T., Cloak & Dagger, Suicide Kings) who tells her about another way to find forgiveness. Peter Wingfield(X2, Highlander: The Series[Methos!]) also stars. Michael Landon Jr.(Love's Abiding Joy) directs. Based upon the novel by Francine Rivers(Mark of the Lion).

I just wanted to say that I read Mark of the Lion years and years ago, and it was actually all right. Although the plot was basically a women's romance version of Sign of the Cross(Cecil B. DeMille's 1932 epic), it was fairly entertaining. Why isn't that a movie yet? Its basically Gladiator meets The Passion(as opposed to the in development movie about Peter that has the same description).

I promised a link to the IMDB forum on this film, so here it is. You can see my reply to someone who says this film is the "anti Pan's Labyrinth." For what it's worth, Pan's Labyrinth comes out on DVD this week and is awesome. See it.

Music this week:
Intro- Mouth like a Magazine by Showbread.
Outro- Cuckoo! by Neon Horse.

Edit: My cohost didn't like the original mix, so I tweaked it and re-encoded the whole thing. Let me know if you had problems, or if you think this is better.

Episode Six - Thr3e

This week we tackle the big screen adaptation of Ted Dekker's bestselling novel 'Thr3e'. A serial killer is loose and is targeting young seminary student Kevin Parson. Watch as Kevin and his childhood friend, Samantha, elude the killer with the help of a forensic psychologist who has personal ties to the killer. The ending offers a HUGE twist.

Also... Music, Movie, DVD and related Christian media news from a completely unbiased standpoint.

Notes: I forget if we mentioned this during the 'cast. I had surgery on Thursday and that's why the episode was recorded late... and I was half hopped up on pills... yeah, that's the ticket...

Intro: "Three is the Magic Number" by Blind Melon from 'School House Rock! Rocks!'

Outro: "Nintendo Thumb" by Heath McNease from 'The Heath McNease Fanclub meets Tonight'
http://www.myspace.com/heathmcnease

Episode Five - End of the Spear

A SuperCandid first! This week we actually review a *spoiler*GOOD*spoiler* Christian movie! Join Jon and Don as we tackle the true life story of a group of missionaries in Ecuador and their deadly encounter with the tribe they have come to save. Starring Chad Allen (Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman) as Nate and Steve Saint (not a Parent Trap gimmick, he plays father and son in different time periods) and Louie Leonardo (Law & Order) as Mincayani. Departing from the questionable practice of romanticizing mid-20th century missionary work by focusing upon the native perspective, the film depicts not only the tragedy made famous in Life magazine but the intriguing aftermath.

Now with 10% less rambling!

EDIT: I screwed up and posted the 'cast without any music! I don't know what happened, but I think it's all fixed now. Also, it's got a supersexy r-rated easter egg attached. Although, I guess if I point it out, it's no longer an easter egg... it's definitely eggy though.

Intro Music:
Light Headed - 'Pure Thoughts' from the album 'Pure Thoughts'
http://www.myspace.com/lightheaded

Outro Music:
Flatfoot 56 - 'Ollie Ollie' from the album 'Jungle of the Midwest Sea'
http://www.flatfoot56.com

Episode Four - Time Changer

Notes: Hal Linden was a TV star in the 70's, and is a Tony award winner. He was born in the 30's.

ALSO! I forgot to edit the end of the podcast, so there's some extra Wedding for you. This one was a BEAR to get up... and I still can't even get iTunes to download it.

Sharp Skills... this is the only track I could download so far. It's a little more 'street' than I usually enjoy, but it's not bad. http://www.myspace.com/sharpskills

The Wedding - 'Say Your Prayers' from "Polarity"
http://www.theweddingrock.com
